Purpose: We wished to compare CT colonography with conventional colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal poiypoid lesions, and we wanted to evaluate the role of IV contrast-enhanced CT colonography for the differentiation between benign polypoid lesions and malignant polypoid lesions. Materials and Methods: Thirty-four consecutive patients underwent CT colonography prior to conventional colonoscopy, Precontrast prone-position CT images and post contrast supine position CT images were obtained and the virtual colonoscopic images were reconstructed, Axial, sagittal and presence, size and morphologic features of colorectal polypoid lesions, and thor these findings were compared with the colonoscopic findings. The degree of enhancement of colorecralpolypoid lesions was measured by subtracting the attenuation valves obtained with precontrastand postcontrast CT images for the differentiation of benignity and malignancy of the colorectal polypoid lesions. Results. Among 75 colorectal polypoid lesions identified on conventional colonoscopy, 49neoplasms were found on CT coloaographv, and the overall detection rate was 65,3%.Detection rate of lesions smaller than l0mm was 52.1%(24/46), and the detection rate for lesions equal to or larger than 10mm was 86.2%(25/29), Morphologic features of the sessile type lesions on CT colonography were well correlated with those noted on colonoscopy, but the stalks were not identified in 6 of 13 polyps on CT colonography. There was no statistical correlation between benignity and malignancy and the degree of contrast enhancement on CT colonography, Conclusion CT colonography is a useful modality for the detection of colorectal polypoid lesionsequal to or polyps. However, CT colonography cannot differentiate benignity from malignancy.

Background: Studies have shown the existence of gender- and age-related differences in the incidence and anatomic distribution of colorectal cancers. The purposes of this study were to analyze the distribution characteristics of colorectal cancer patients regarding gender, age, location and tumor size in the course of colonoscopy. Materials and Methods: All colorectal cancer patients who underwent colonoscopy in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from 2003 to 2012 were included in our retrospective study. Demographic information (age and gender) and colonoscopy report information (tumor size and location) were collected and analyzed. To compare the gender differences in tumor location and tumor size, as well as the size differences in tumor location, the chi-square test was used. Results: A total of 3, 369 colorectal cancer patients (2, 007 men vs 1, 362 women) were included in our study. Statistical analysis showed there was no gender difference in the anatomic distribution of the tumors (p>0.05). However, there was a gender difference in tumor size (p<0.05). In addition, our study found there was a significant difference in tumor size between rectal and colon tumors (p<0.001). Conclusions: There was no gender difference in the anatomic distribution of colorectal tumors. In addition, tumors observed in men were larger than in women.
This paper proposes an electronic colon cleansing method using a patient CT profile for a virtual colonoscopy. The proposed method extracts the colon using cubic seeded region growing, and removes tagged materials adjacent to the colon. Residuals produced by a partial volume effect at the boundary of air-tagged material are deleted, and the removed soft tissue pixels due to a partial volume effect at the boundary of tagged material-soft tissue are recovered using a patient CT profile. The proposed method was applied to 16 virtual colonoscopy patient data sets, and produced promising results by a subjective evaluation of a radiologist and by a quantitative evaluation of a computer-aided diagnosis system.
Background: This study aimed to research the awareness of screening colonoscopy (SC) among patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and their relatives. Methodology: A questionnaire form including information and behavior about colonoscopic screening for CRCs of patients and their first-degree relatives (FDRs) was prepared. Results: A total of 406 CRC patients were enrolled into the study, with 1534 FDRs (siblings n: 1381 and parents n: 153). Positive family history for CRC was found in 12% of the study population. Previous SC was performed in 11% of patients with CRC. Mean age of the patients whose FDRs underwent SC was lower than the patients whose FDRs did not (52 vs 57 years; p<0,001). The frequency of SC in FDRs was 64% in patients diagnosed CRC under 35 years of age. Persons having a positive family history of CRC had SC more often (51 vs 22%, p<0,001). FDRs of patients having a higher educational level and income had SC more frequently. Conclusions: When screening for CRC is planned, elderly subjects, those with family history for CRC, and those with low educational and lower income should be given esspecial attention in order that they be convinced to undergo screening for CRC.

Background: Although the incidence of colorectal cancer in Malaysia is increasing, awareness of this cancer, including its symptoms, risk factors and screening methods, remains low among Malaysian populations. This survey was conducted with the aim of (i) ascertaining the awareness level regarding colorectal cancer symptoms, risk factors and its screening among the general populations and (ii) assessing the public preference and willingness to pay for colorectal cancer screening. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire was distributed in eight major cities in West Malaysia during the World Health Digestive Day (WDHD) campaign. Two thousand four hundred and eight respondents participated in this survey. Results: Generally, awareness of colorectal cancer was found to be relatively good. Symptoms such as change in bowel habit, blood in the stool, weight loss and abdominal pain were well recognized by 86.6%, 86.9%, 83.4% and 85.6% of the respondents, respectively. However, common risk factors such as positive family history, obesity and old age were acknowledged only by less than 70% of the respondents. Almost 80% of the respondents are willing to take the screening test even without any apparent symptoms. Colonoscopy is the preferred screening method, but only 37.5% were willing to pay from their own pocket to get early colonoscopy. Conclusions: Continous cancer education should be promoted with more involvement from healthcare providers in order to make future colorectal cancer screening programs successful.
In November 2007, a 46-year-old male Thai patient presented with chronic abdominal pain for over 3 years. Colonoscopy revealed a small parasite of about $2{\times}1mm$ in size attached to the cecum mucosa. The worm was removed endoscopically, fixed, and stained for morphological observations. The specimen was identified as Anchitrema sanguineum (Digenea: Anchitrematidae), a trematode first reported in a reptile, Chamaeleo vulgaris, from Egypt, and then sporadically found in the intestines of insectivorous bats and other mammals. The patient was treated with praziquantel but no more worms were found in his stool. His symptoms improved slightly but not cured completely. It remains unclear whether the chronic abdominal pain of the patient was caused by this trematode infection. Whatever is the pathogenicity of this trematode, this is the first human case of A. sanguineum infection in the literature.
Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) are now no longer public health problems in the Republic of Korea (South Korea), but their status are unavailable in the residents of North Korea (NK) despite the expectation of large scale traffic and future reunification of the Korean Peninsula. A total of 20 female refugees from NK who had been admitted to the Division of Gastroenterology, Dankook University Hospital, were subjected in this study. Among them, 15 refugees were examined by the colonoscopy and 10 ones were examined with the stool examination (formalin-ether sedimentation). Both diagnostic methods were commonly adopted in 5 patients. Eggs of Trichuris trichiura were detected in 7 out of 10 refugees in the stool examination. In the colonoscopy, T. trichiura worms were found in 6 (40.0%) out of 15 refugees. Total 9 (45.0%) peoples were confirmed to be infected with human whipworms. Additionally, 1 case of clonorchiasis was diagnosed in the stool examination and a worm of Ascaris lumbricoides was discovered from a trichuriasis case. These findings suggested that STH is highly prevalent in NO, in which living conditions are not so good in the aspect of general hygiene and medical care.
An 8-year-old, female Pointer dog was presented with weight loss, hematochezia, and dyschezia. For the diagnosis, physical examination, complete blood counts, serum chemistry, radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, colonoscopy, cytology and histopathological examination were performed. The complete blood counts and serum biochemistry results were within the reference range. Ultrasonographic findings were presented with the thickened wall of the colon and rectum. Colonoscopy revealed irregular and ulcerated mucosal surface, mass and luminal narrowing of colorectal lesions. There were thickened wall and contrast enhancement of the lesion in colorectal region on the computed tomography. The cytologic examination suggested the adenocarcinoma. Postmortem histopathologic examination revealed adenocarcinoma. Based on these findings, the dog was diagnosed with annular colorectal adenocarcinoma.
Childhood intestinal tuberculosis is difficult to diagnose for its protean clinical manifestations, especially in cases without pulmonary involvement. Differential diagnosis with Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease and other malignancy is also important. Surgery has often been required for pathologic confirmation or therapy. Colonoscopy may be performed safely under consciousness sedation in children for bacteriologic and histopathologic confirmation of the biopsy specimen in addition to gross appearance of the lesion. We have experienced a case of intestinal tuberculosis presenting with chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss and anemia in a 9 year old girl who was diagnosed by a colonoscopic examination and culture of the biopsy specimen from the ascending colon. The patient was managed with antituberculous drugs and recovered uneventfully.
This study aims to investigate the correlation between the occurrence of colon polyps and carotid IMT by age. This study checked the correlation between the occurrence of colon polyps and carotid IMT, grouping patients who had a colonoscopy and carotid ultrasonography simultaneously by age based on cross-tabulation. As a result of the analysis, by age, the older the patients with metabolic syndrome, the higher the correlation between the occurrence of colon polyps and carotid IMT became. Also, when carotid IMT was more than 1.1mm, the incidence of polyps was high. In conclusion, there was a high correlation of the occurrence rate of colon polyps with carotid ultrasonography and colonoscopy, and the older the patient and the thicker the carotid IMT, the higher the correlation became.
