반회분식 반응을 이용한 단분산 ZnO 나노 입자의 제조 및 입자의 크기와 입도 분포에 영향을 미치는 HPC의 작용 (Synthesis of Monodisperse ZnO Nanoparticles Using Semi-batch Reactor and Effects of HPC Affecting Particle Size and Particle Size Distribution)

  • 해중합 촉매인 zinc acetate ($C_{4}H_{6}O_{4}Zn{\cdot}2H_{2}O{\cdot}0.2\;mol$)와 lithuium hydroxide $H_{2}O$ ($LiOH{\cdot}H_{2}O{\cdot}0.14\;mol$)를 용매인 ethyl alcohol (99.9%)에 용해시킨 후 분산제인 hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)를 첨가하여 균일하게 분산된 ZnO (산화아연) 콜로이드 용액을 졸-겔법을 이용하여 합성하였다. ZnO 입자들의 크기와 모양은 분산제인 HPC에 의해 결정되었다. 또한 나노 크기의 ZnO 입자들은 zinc-2-ethylhexagonate를 기초로 한 침천법을 이용하여 얻었다. 이렇게 얻어진 ZnO 분말을 DLS, XRD, FE-SEM, 그리고 UV-Vis를 통하여 특성 분석을 하였다. 그 결과, 산화아연 분말은 자기조립 반응으로 균일하고 육방정계 모양의 구조를 가지는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 또 평균 입자 크기는 거의 40 nm이고 균일하게 분산되었다.

  • 보호콜로이드에 따른 입체 안정제 (steric stabilizer)작용이 폴리초산비닐 (poly(vinyl acetate), PVAc) 라텍스의 안정성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 보호콜로이드로서 중합도 1080, 검화도 78.4%인 반응성 poly(vinyl alcohol) mono thiol (PVALT)를 사용한 것이 중합도 1100, 검화도 81.6%인 poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)를 사용하는 것보다 PVAc 라텍스의 안정성이 양호하였으며, 반응성 PVALT의 첨가량이 증가할수록 PVAc 라텍스의 안정성은 향상되었다. PVAc 라텍스 입자의 표면 형태 변화는 투과전자 현미경으로 관찰하였다. 입자크기는 반응성 PVALT의 첨가량이 증가할수록 감소하였다. 결과적으로 에멀젼의 중합 시 PVA보다 반응성 PVALT를 사용하는 것이 PVAc 라텍스의 안정성이 양호함을 알 수 있었다. 이는 반응성 PVALT로 인해 PVAc 라텍스 입자계면에 PVA와의 화학 결합을 유도할 수 있는 다량의 티올 (thiol)기가 도입되어 PVAc와 반응성 PVALT간의 화학반응으로 인한 PVALT-b-PVAc 블록 공중합체가 생성됨에 기인하는 것으로 사료된다. 아울러 제타전위는 탄산나트륨의 농도가 증가할수록 감소하였다.

상업용 내오염성 저압 RO막의 표면 특성 분석 (Surface Characteristics of Fouling Resistant Low-Pressure RO Membranes)

  • In this study, five commercially available fouling resistant low-pressure RO membranes were investigated for the treatment of seasonally brackish surface water with high organic content (${\approx}24mg/L$). The membranes investigated are LFC-1 (Hydranautics), X20 (Trisep), BW30FR1 (FilmTec), SG (Osmonics), and BE-FR (Saehan). The results of surface characterization revealed that each of these membranes has one or two unique surface characteristics to minimize the adherence of the fouling materials to the membrane. Specifically, the LFC1 membrane features a neutral or low negative surface to minimize electrostatic interactions with charged foulants. The X20, on the other hand, shows a highly negatively charged surface, and thus, is expected to perform well with feed waters containing negatively charged organics and colloids. The BW30FR1 exhibits a relatively neutral and hydrophilic surface, which could be beneficial for lessening organic and/or biofouling. The SG membrane has a smooth surface that makes it quite resistant to fouling, particularly for colloidal deposition. Lastly, BE-FR membrane demonstrated a medium surface charge and a slightly higher hydrophobicity. In the pilot study, all of the four membranes experienced a gradual increase in MTC (water mass transfer coefficient or specific flux) over time, indicating no fouling occurred during the pilot study. The deterioration of permeate water quality such as TDS was also observed over time, suggesting that the integrity of the membranes was compromised by the monochloramine used for biofouling control.

Influence of EDZ on the Safety of a Potential HLW Repository

  • Construction of tunnels in a deep crystalline host rock for a potential High-Level Radioactive Waste(HLW) repository inevitably generates an excavation disturbed zone (EDZ). There have been a series of debates on whether a permeability in an EDZ increases or not and what would be the maximum depth of an EDZ. Recent studies show mixed opinions on permeability. However, there has been an international consensus on the thickness of an EDZ; 30 cm for TBM and 1 meter for controlled blast. One of the impacts of an EDZ is on determining the distance between adjacent deposition holes. The void gap by the excavation hinders relaxation of temperature profiles so that the current Korean reference designing distance between holes should be stretched out more to keep the maximum temperature in a buffer region below 100 degrees Celsius. The other impact of an EDZ is on the long-term post closure radiological safety. To estimate the impact, the reference scenario, the well scenario, is chosen. Released nuclides diffuse through a bentonite buffer region experiencing strong sorption and reach a fracture surrounded by a porous medium. Inside a fractured porous region, radionuclides migrate by advection and dispersion with matrix diffusion into a porous medium. Finally, they reach a well assumed to be a source of potable water for local residents. The annual individual dose is assessed on this well scenario to find out the significance of an EDZ. A profound sensitivity study was performed, but all results show that the impact is negligible. Even though the role of an EDZ turns out to be limited on overall safety assessment, still it is worthwhile to study the chemical role of an EDZ, such as a potential source for natural colloids, potential sealing of an open fracture by fine clay particles generated by the process of an EDZ, and alteration of a sorption mechanism by an EDZ in the future.

유체 계면에서 콜로이드 흡착에 대한 전해질 농도의 영향 (The Effect of Electrolyte Concentration for Colloid Adsorption toward a Fluid-Fluid Interface)

  • 이 논문은 콜로이드 입자가 기름-물 사이의 계면으로 흡착될 때 필수적으로 존재하는 정전기적 반발력에 대한 실험적, 이론적 연구이다. 광집게(optical laser tweezers)와 피에조(piezo controller)를 사용하여, 개별 입자를 트랩(trap)한 후, 계면으로 강제 전이시킨다. 이때 수용액이 전해질을 포함한 경우에만, 입자가 계면으로 전이되며, 포함하지 않을 경우에는 흡착이 일어나지 않는다. 이러한 현상을 근본적으로 이해하기 위해, 광학 트랩핑 힘(optical trapping force)과 입자와 계면 사이에 존재하는 정전기적 분리압력(electrostatic disjoining pressure)를 정량적으로 계산하였다. 이를 바탕으로, 입자가 계면으로 흡착될 때, 그들 사이에는 필연적으로 문턱 에너지(threshold energy)가 존재함을 밝혀냈다. 콜로이드 입자가 에멀젼(emulsions)이나 거품(foams)등 두 개 이상의 섞이지 않는 유체계면을 안정화 시키는 "콜로이드 계면 활성제(colloid surfactants)" 역할을 한다는 사실을 고려했을 때, 본 연구는 이러한 입자의 흡착 현상을 근본적으로 이해하는데 있어서 중요한 지식을 제공한다.

화장품에서 금 콜로이드 입자에 의한 사프라닌 염료의 분해 연구 (Photodegradation of Safranin-O Dye by Au Metal Colloid in Cosmetics)

  • 본 연구에서는 금 나노입자 콜로이드를 이용하여 safranin-O의 광촉매적 분해를 관찰하였다. 금 나노입자는 용액상에서 safranin-O의 분해 속도를 빠르게 하기 위해서 사용되었다. 금 나노입자 콜로이드는 수용액상에서 $Na_2CO_3$와 PVP 고분자(poly(vinyl pyrrolidone))를 이용하는 환원방법에 의하여 제조하였다. Safranin-O의 분해현상은 자외선(UV light)와 과산화수소($H_2O_2$)의 존재 하에서 금 나노입자 콜로이드와 염화금의 농도, 반응계의 산도(pH), 반응시간과 같은 실험조건들의 조절을 통해 연구되었다. 분해반응에 사용된 금 나노입자 콜로이드의 농도가 증가함에 따라서 염료가 분해되는 속도가 증가하였다. Safranin-O의 광산화 반응은 광학적으로 측정되었고, 금 나노입자의 기본적인 물성과 촉매 특성은 UV-Vis 광학계를 이용하여 측정되었다.

우라닐 가수분해물의 용해도 연구 (Solubility Studies of Uranyl Hydrolysis Precipitates)

  • 서로 다른 pH 조건에서 생성한 우라닐 가수분해물의 용해도에 미치는 지하수 성분의 영향을 측정하였다. 우라닐 가수분해 침전물 pH 6.4 및 9.7에서 제조하였다. 편마암 층에서 채취한 지하수로부터 무기 및 유기콜로이드를 제거한 분리지하수, 채취지하수의 분석성분과 동일한 조성을 가지는 합성지하수, 그리고 0.1 M NaCl 수용액에서의 용해도에 미치는 pH의 영향을 측정하였다. 또한 채취지하수에서 상대적으로 다량 존재하는 음이온 및 양이온의 영향을 측정하였다. 지하수에서의 우라닐 가수분해 침전물의 용해도는 0.1 M NaCl 용액에서보다 약 100배 정도 큰 것으로 나타났다. X-선 회절분석 결과는 높은 pH에서 제조한 우라닐 가수분해 침전물이 낮은 pH에서 제조한 것보다 낮은 결정화도와 높은 용해도를 보였다.

스테인리스강 금속 표면에 내열 저방사 산화물 코팅제 적용과 방사 특성 평가 (Heat Resistant Low Emissivity Oxide Coating on Stainless Steel Metal Surface and Characterization of Emissivity)

  • Inorganic oxide colloids dispersed in alcohol were applied to a stainless steel substrate to produce oxide coatings for the purpose of minimizing emissive thermal transfer. The microstructure, roughness, infrared emissive energy, and surface heat loss of the coated substrate were observed with a variation of the nano oxide sol and coating method. It was found that the indium tin oxide, antimony tin oxide, magnesium oxide, silica, titania sol coatings may reduce surface heat loss of the stainless steel at 300${\circ}C$. It was possible to suppress thermal oxidation of the substrate with the oxide sol coatings during an accelerated thermal durability test at 600${\circ}C$. The silica sol coating was most effective to suppress thermal oxidation at 600${\circ}C$, so that it is useful to prevent the increase of radiative surface heat loss as a heating element. Therefore, the inorganic oxide sol coatings may be applied to improve energy efficiency of the substrate as the heating element.

Initial experience with intra-articular 188Re-tin colloid as a "radiation synovectomy" agent in various joints

  • Radiation synovectomy has been proposed as a promising palliative therapy for recurrent joint effusions for the last two or three decades. Ionizing radiations emitted by intrarticularly administered radiolabelled colloids. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of radiation synovectomy (RSV) using $^{188}Re$-tin colloid in the treatment of recurrent joint effusions and chronic synovitis of knee joints. Three phase bone scan was acquired for the concerned joint prior to radiosynovectomy. $^{188}Re$-tin colloid was prepared as per the reported protocol. 9 patients, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and suffering from chronic resistant synovitis of the knee, ankle or elbow joints were administered the radiopharmaceuticals, checked for radiochemical purity >95% by intraarticular route. A whole body scan was acquired 2 h post-radiosynovectomy. In all the 9 treatments, no leakage to non-target organs was visible in the whole body scan. Static scans of the joint revealed complete retention of $^{188}Re$-tin colloid in the joints post administration of the agent. Clinically all patients exhibited a complete or partial response. RSV with $^{188}Re$-tin colloid was safe and effective in patients with chronic synovitis of rheumatoid origin.

Comparison of the rheological and diffusion properties of some gelling agents and blends and their effects on shoot multiplication

  • The rheological and diffusion properties of blends of agar/guar gum, agar/Phytagel and Phytagel/guar gum were analysed and compared to those properties of agar or Phytagel applied alone at two different gelling concentrations. Moreover, their effects on the shoot multiplication of the apple scion Galaxy and two black locust clones (SF63, SF82) were studied, and their cost benefits over agar were calculated. Elastic hydrogel formation was demonstrated for each blend by rheological measurements, but the gel strength depended on the types and concentrations of the applied gelling agents and blends. Guar gum was able to speed the diffusion in the different blends, and diffusion was independent of gel strength. The rate of shoot multiplication increased (to 8.9 shoots per explant) and the percent of hyperhydrated shoots decreased (to 12%) when the blend of agar/guar gum was used for the shoot multiplication of apple. Similarly, the highest multiplication rates of black locust clones (between 3.9 and 4.1) were obtained on media solidified by blends containing guar gum. The best shoot performance with the lowest percent of hyperhydrated shoots (11-12% in SF63 and 2-23% in SF82) was achieved using agar alone or the agar/guar gum blend. The shoot multiplication was improved of both species and the production cost was reduced by 42% by using the agar/guar gum blend.
