  • Collection development policies(CDP) are becoming increasingly important to libraries of all types and sizes. The paper addresses the elements to develop a collection development policy to guide the librarians for the science and technology information resources. Instead of focusing on how well a given item fits into or supports the collection, the policy gives general guidance on the selection of information resources. The general collection development guidelines for the information resources include relevance and potential use of the information, demand for the information, ease of use of the product, subject and magnitudes, stability of the coverage of the resource, longevity of the information and evaluation mechanism.

  • This study is a survey of collection development policies in the 40 university libraries among 42 in Korea as of 1984. The survey used a questionnaire with 36 questions concerning the basic elements of the collection development policy. The survey results revealed many problems demanding correction. The measures to correct the problems in the university libraries are as follows. 1. It is desirable that the libraries should have a collection development policy statement written and adopted for the systematic collection building. 2. It is advisable that the libraries should include a function of the materials selection among other various functions of the Library Committee for the purpose of informing administrators of the goals of the libraries and the validity of the budgetary allocation. 3. It is desirable that each library should organize the Collection Development Committee for minimizing the possibility of personal bias on the part of the individual selectors. 4. It is advisable that the primary responsibility for materials selection should be delegated as follows: for the materials for faculty research, to the faculty members; for the other collections, to the professional staff of each department; for the final review of whether or not to purchase, to the Collection Development Committee. 5. It is desirable for the purchase priority of materials to be set up in accordance with the order of 6 levels of collection development. 6. It is advisable that the libraries should, as top priority, purchase materials in direct su n.0, pport of the undergraduate and graduate academic programs, and in subject matter areas other than languages and literature, Korean materials should have not only the higher priority than the foreign language materials, but also maintain the comprehensive collection level. 7. It is desirable that the special collections should be purchased by special funds from the authority, and the special collections librarian should have the responsibility of the materials selection under the advice of the faculty members relating to the subject area. 8. It is advisable that duplicate copies should be bought only for high use items, but for reserve books, by the program enrollment, and textbooks should not be bought in general, except as su n.0, pplemental materials for course work in which they are necessary and heavily used. 9. It is reasonable that the material budget should be distributed as follows: by the ratio for distributing funds, about 60-70% for the library and 30-40% for departments; by the type of materials, about 50% for books, 40% for periodicals and 10% for other materials, or when not bought other materials, about 50-60% for books and 40-50% for periodicals. In addition, it is desirable that undergraduate class enrollment, graduate class enrollment, undergraduate majors, graduate majors, average book cost in the discipline, number of faculty, and use rate by subject should be considered as the factors for the allocation of funds by department, and special consideration should be given to newly-founded departments so the library holdings can be adequate to su n.0, pport them.

  • This study evaluated the fiction collection of Korean public libraries by applying use factor and suggested various measures to enhance collection development function. As a result, while the collection building and borrowing ratios of Korean literature in literature collection by language were the highest at 62.6% and 54.3% respectively, the use factor was lower than the base value(1.00). And while the collection building and borrowing ratios of Korean contemporary fiction by item category were the highest at 65.60% and 51.36% respectively, the use factor was lower than the base value and the use factor by year is decreasing in recent years. The reason is because of poor collection development. Therefore, public library need to consider active alternatives such as establishment of the collection development policy and fiction collection development guideline, composition of the fiction material selection committee, adaption of the dedicated librarian system for fiction material development, development and utilization of a selection tool for fiction materials, and periodic evaluation of fiction collection.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract the necessity and core tasks of the local records management agency, and to establish standards for transferring records and select important records for the Gyeongsangnam-do Archives. In reality, local records management institutions cannot accommodate all records for more than 30 years of preservation. In addition, in order to realize the establishment value of the local archives, it is necessary to select and transfer records that can explain the institution. Currently, the local archives do not have their own standards other than legal transfer standards, or even if they do, they are insufficient. The record management standard, which is known as a legal transfer standard, has several problems internally, but in practice, it is not a problem to transfer it to the standard. However, the more you continue to operate, the higher the demand for explanation of the records to be preserved will be, and if you cannot, the need for the institution will be challenged. Therefore, this study defined the procedures in the order of setting recording goals, selecting topics, and defining series suitable for the Gyeongsangnam-do Archives by applying the UK TNA's record collection policy and the strategic selection policy, OSP (Operational Selection Policies). Through this, by selecting the target of the transfer of records of the Gyeongsangnam-do Archives, the need for policy discussions on the preservation and selection of important records of the local archives was mentioned.

  • As information technologies are applied to the libraries in information society, the library services have been changing its feature. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore and to establish a paradigm of the library services in information society. It is hypothesized that the application of information technologies leads to the change of the library services in information society. To prove the hypothesis, the data were collected from various research results carried out in the developed countries and by observing various libraries where the information technologies are extensively applied. The findings are as follows: 1. As information technologies are applied to the library, many new library services emerge for the society. 2. As the electronic data replace the paper data, the collection of a library becomes the collection of the libraries in the world. Therefore, the accessibility to the information network is more important than to own information in the library. Librarians select various electronic data according to the library policy which distinguishes their own library collection from others. The policy also solves the various problems related to weeding and preserving library collection. And the use of CD-ROM selection tools enable library users to select their own data. Now, the censorship becomes the concems of the library users, not the library. 3. The catalogs are reorganized for the electronic data for the international use. The most important information in the catalog is the location of the data and the multi access to the data are necessary. 4. As the information technologies are applied in book selection, cataloguing, information retreival and circulation, the library users are enable to service themselves in the library. And most of the routine works related to the information service are taken over by the library staffs. Professional librarians engage in user education, information marketing and fund raising. 5. Public libraries in information society serves those who have no access to the information. They help the illiterates. patients in the hospital, prisoners, and homeless in the city. Therefore, the information technologies enhance the role of librarians in professional work in the library as well as in the information society.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the importance of responding to the increasing issues related to collection management surrounding school libraries by analyzing the status of collection management policies (CMP) at the school libraries. Accordingly, through literature research, the main contents of the composition of the CMP for children and adolescent users were analyzed. Based on this, a 50 questions questionnaire was conducted and analyzed on the status of the CMP and the composition of the contents of the CMP for 93 school library managers nationwide. As a result, first, the data used as the selecting collections priority selection criteria were curriculum-related and recommended book lists rather than CMP. Second, 31 out of 93 school libraries (33.3%) had with CMP. Third, the understanding and necessity of the CMP of the school library manager with the CMP were higher. Fourth, it was found that more than half of the components of the CMP did not include the renewal cycle, intellectual freedom, etc.

  • An intrusion can be defined as any set of actors that attempt to compromise the integrity, confidentiality and availability of computer resource and destroy the security policy of computer system. The Intrusion Detection System that detects the intrusion consists of data collection, data reduction, analysis and detection, and report and response. It is important for feature selection to detect the intrusion efficiently after collecting the large set of data of Intrusion Detection System. In this paper, the feature selection method using Genetic Algorithm and Decision Tree is proposed. Also the method is verified by the simulation with KDD data.
