A thermoelectric module can be used for cooling or power generation. The basic requirements to achieve a significant thermoelectric performance are the same for both generators and coolers. Thermoelectric modules with $Bi_2Te_3$ materials are usually employed in the cooling applications below room temperature but it can also be used for the power generation in the similar temperature range. In the present study, the power generation with a $Bi_2Te_3$ thermoelectric module has been investigated. The temperature difference between the hot and cold sides of the module is maintained with electric heater and cold water from the circulating water bath. The result shows that the electric current generated increases with temperature difference and decreases with the load resistance. However, the voltage increases with both the temperature difference and load resistance. The electric power increases with temperature difference and it has the maximum value when the load resistance is about 4 ${\Omega}$ for a given device.
The four different polymer compounds were manufactured with the two kinds of plasticizers [(di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate(DOS), and di-2-butyl sebacate(DBS)] and two different additive amounts(18, 26 phr) of the same plasticizer for making cable sheath for ship. Ethylene-vinylacetate, ethylene-propylene-diene-copolymer as matrix polymers and ethylene-vinylacetate grafted maleic anhydride as coupling agent were selected for compounding with fire retardant, closslinking agent, filler, and other additives besides plasticizer. The compound including DOS showed the higher ${\Delta}T$ than that including DBS at the same additive amount in the rheology test. And with increasing plasticizer, the compounds resulted in lower tensile strength and higher elongation by lubricating effect of plasticizer. DOS yielded better aging resistance and cold resistance than DBS due to the good heat resistance and low solidifying point of DOS compared to DBS.

The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of simulating the mechanical properties of irradiatied austenitic stainless steels by cold-working. In this study, the tensile properties, cyclic hardening behaviors and fracture toughness of cold-worked TP316L stainless steel were compared with those of austenitic stainless steels irradiated by neutrons. It showed that cold-working can properly simulate the increase in strength and the decrease in ductility and fracture resistance of austenitic stainless steels by neutron irradiation, even though it could not perfectly simulate the microstructures of irradiated austenitic stainless steels. Also, cold-working can appropriately simulate the hardening behaviors of neutron irradiated austenitic stainless steels under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions.
In this study, we compare thermal performance between four different types of cold plates for humanoid robot cooling. Two commercially available cold plates made of copper have different dimensions and internal flow paths: One has $20{\times}20$$mm^2$ base area with micro-channels and the other has $62.5{\times}62.5$$mm^2$ base area with 85 round pin-fins. And two different types of cold plates of $20{\times}20$$mm^2$ base area with 7 mm high are made of PC (polycarbonate), which aims to reduce the weight of cooling system. All cold plates are mounted on a $20{\times}20$$mm^2$ copper block with two cartridge heaters of 30 $W/cm^2$. The overall heat transfer coefficient and thermal resistances for the liquid-cooled cold plates are obtained. The copper cold plate with micro-channels showed the best performance. Polycarbonate cold plates display fairly good thermal performance with more reduced system weight.
In the past, cold crack was commonly observed in the HAZ(heat affected zone) of high-strength steels. Applying to TMCP(thermo-mechanical controlled process) and HSLA(high strength low alloy) steels, cold crack tends to increase the occurrence in the weld metal. It is generally understood that cold crack occurs when the following factors are present simultaneously : diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal, a susceptible microstructure and residual stress. In particular, many studies investigated the microstructural effect on the cold crack in HAZ and the cold crack in weld metals starts to receive the special attendance in modern times. The purpose of the study is to review the effect of weld microstructures (grain boundary ferrite, Widm$\ddot{a}$nstatten ferrite, acicular ferrite, bainite and martensite) on cold crack in the weld metals. Among various microstructures of weld metals, acicular ferrite produced the greatest resistance to the cold crack due to the fine interlocking nature and high-angle grain boundary of the microstructure.
This study examined the cold hardiness of eight cultivars of common persimmon and six cultivars of sweet persimmon growing at the southern part of Korea, to know the most susceptible tissue part, timing of damage, and the difference in freezing resistance between the cultivars during the winter of '77-'78. The cold hardiness of winter bud, cambium and xylem parenchyma of the current year twig was measured on three collection dates; 10 / 26 / 77, 1 / 26 / 78 and 3 / 26 / 78. The results were obtained as follows, 1. The least cold hardy tissue part was winter bud during mid winter and early spring. 2. On the basis of the cold hardiness of the winter bud sweet persimmon cultivars appeared to be less cold hardy than common persimmon cultivars. In the cold hardiness of cambium and xylem parenchyma, there was no consistance differece between the two group of cultivars. 3. The late frost during early spring appeared to cause the most critical damage to the winter bud of persimmon.
This study was designed to analyze boar sperm to compare motility, acrosome morphology, viability and ATP by various preservation methods between Duroc boar A with cold shock resistance sperm and Duroc boar B with cold shock sensitivity sperm. Semen volume, sperm concentration, motility and normal acrosome between Duroc boar A and B did not show any differences within 2 h after collection. There were no differences in sperm motility and normal acrosome between boar A and B at 1 day of preservation at $17^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, sperm motility and normal acrosome from 2 day of preservation at $17^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively, were higher for boar A than boar B. The frozen-thawed sperm motility and normal acrosome were higher for boar A than boar B. The sperm viability and ATP concentration according to storage period of liquid semen at $17^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$ were higher for boar A than boar B. Also, the sperm viability and ATP concentration of frozen-thawed semen were higher for boar A than boar B. In conclusion, we found out that the original quality of boar semen with cold shock resistance sperm played an important role.
Freezing resistance of ten cultivars of Chestnut (Castanea crenata S. et Z.) collected from four different sites of Kyunggi Province, Korea on March 2, 1975, was measured to find out the differences among tissue parts, and those among cultivars. The freezing and thawing rates were controlled lower than $6^{\circ}C/hr$. which occurs in nature. The resistance to low temperature was in order from lowest to highest; winter bud, cambium, xylum ray parenchyma and bark cortex. The difference in cold hardiness among cultivars was not consistent among tissue parts of twig stem except in cultivar Dan-Taeck of which all tissue parts showed highest cold-hardiness. The importance of the study on the seasonal variation in cold hardiness of different tissue parts was discussed in terms of choosing the most cold resistant Chestnut culitivar in Korea.
Cu based amorphous ($Cu_{54}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}Ni_{6}$) powders were deposited onto Al 6061 substrates by cold spray process with different powder preheating temperatures (below glass transition temperature: $350^{\circ}C$, near glass transition temperature: $430^{\circ}C$ and near crystallization temperature: $500^{\circ}C$). The microstructure and macroscopic properties (hardness, wear and corrosion) of Cu based amorphous coating layers were also investigated. X-ray diffraction results showed that cold sprayed Cu based amorphous coating layers of $300{\sim}350{\mu}m$ thickness could be well manufactured regardless of powder preheating temperature. Porosity measurements revealed that the coating layers of $430^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ preheating temperature conditions had lower porosity contents (0.88%, 0.93%) than that of the $350^{\circ}C$ preheating condition (4.87%). Hardness was measured as 374.8 Hv ($350^{\circ}C$), 436.3 Hv ($430^{\circ}C$) and 455.4 Hv ($500^{\circ}C$) for the Cu based amorphous coating layers, respectively. The results of the suga test for the wear resistance property also corresponded well to the hardness results. The critical anodic current density ($i_{c}$) according to powder preheating temperature conditions of $430^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$ was lower than that of the sample preheated at $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. The higher hardness, wear and corrosion resistances of the preheating conditions of near $T_{g}$ and $T_{x}$, compared to the properties of below $T_{g}$, could be well explained by the lower porosity of coating layer.
This study aimed to know difference in freezing resistance among different clonal seedlings or different seed source seedlings of Cryptomeria japonica which has been selected where extreme cold prevails in Korea and Japan. The freezing resistance of three 12-50 year old trees was also measured in the experiment. The freezing resistance was measured in different tissue parts: mainly leaf, cambiam and xylem, at three different collection dates in two different collection places during the winter of 1977-1978. The following results and discussions were made: 1. The clonal difference in freezing resistance of Cryptomeria japonica was $9^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}C$ in maximum according to the collection place. However, the clonal difference in freezing resistance was not related to the difference in climatic conditions where the parent tree have been growing. This impiled that the natural selection of cold resistant genes in Cryptomeria japonica has not reached its evolutional equilibrium yet since most of the Cryptomeria forest has been established by artificial regeneration. 2. The difference in freezing resistance among leaf, cambium and xylem was not apparent except that leaf of several clones showed higher freezing resistance than cambium or xylem when they collected at mid-winter. The least freezing resistant tissue part, thought its freezing resistance was not measure in all clones and all temperatures were appeared in the apical buds. The new shoot growth was observed in the next spring with being replaced by its dormant or adventitious bud growth when the apical bud was injured dy cold during winter. 3. The freezing resistance of leaf, cambium and xylem was shown high enough so that freezing resistance Cryptomeria clones in this experiment were supposed to be able to survive in cold winter conditions at the middle part of Korea. However, it was reported that the most susceptible tissue part to winter injury was the basal stem, but of which freezing resistance was not-measured in this experiment. Several silvicultural methods for prevention of Cryptomeria seedlings from cold damage were discussed in literature.
