  • Exhaust emissions from vehicles are the main source of air pollution. Many researchers are trying to find the way of reducing vehicle emissions, especially in the cold transient period of the FTP-75 test. In this study, UEGI (Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition) technology, warming up the close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) by igniting the unburned exhaust mixture using two glow plugs installed in the upstream of the catalyst, was developed. It was applied to an exhaust system with a hydrocarbon adsorber to ensure an effective reduction of HC emission during the cold start period. Results showed that the CCC reaches the light-off temperature (LOT) in a shorter time compared with the baseline exhaust system, and HC and CO emissions are reduced significantly during the cold start.

  • The improvement of combustion stability is very important because it is closely related to the exhaust emission concentrations as well as the fuel consumption during the cold start of SI engine. In our previous studies, the spark and exhaust valve timings were retarded individually from the baseline case to increase the exhaust gas temperature far fast warmup of a close-coupled catalyst. In the study, it was found that combustion stability during cold start becomes worse when the valve timing is retarded from the baseline conditions. The spark and valve timings were simultaneously changed from the baseline conditions to find out the variation of combustion stability during cold start of an Sl engine. Through the study. retarded spark timing by $5^{\circ}$ CA helps improvement of $COV_{imep}$ by $2\%$ and $15^{\circ}C$ increase of exhaust temperature. Retarded exhaust valve timing makes the exhaust gas temperature increase by $30^{\circ}C$, but it also deteriorates the $COV_{imep}$ by $1\%$.

  • Cold stretching(CS) pressure vessels from ASS304 (austenitic stainless steel 304) are used for the transportation and storage of liquefied natural gas(LNG). CS pressure vessels are manufactured by pressurizing the finished vessels to a specific pressure to produce the required stress ${\sigma}_k$. After CS, there is some degree of plastic deformation. Therefore, CS vessels have a higher strength and lighter weight compared to conventional vessels. In this study, we investigate the tensile and fatigue behavior of ASS304 sampled by CS pressure vessels in accordance with the ASME code at cryogenic temperature. From the fatigue test results, we show S-N curves using a statistical method recommended by JSEM-S002. We carried out the fractography of fractured specimens using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • Early-type galaxies represent the end point of galaxy evolution and, despite pervasive residual star formation, are generally considered "red and dead", that is composed exclusively of old stars with no star formation. Here, their molecular gas content is constrained and discussed in relation to their evolution, supporting the continuing importance of minor mergers and/or cold gas accretion. First, as part of the Atlas3D survey, the first complete, large, volume-limited survey of CO in normal early-type galaxies is presented. At least of 23% of local early-types possess a substantial amount of molecular gas, the necessary ingredient for star formation, independent of mass and environment but dependent on the specific stellar angular momentum. Second, using CO synthesis imaging, the extent of the molecular gas is constrained and a variety of morphologies is revealed. The kinematics of the molecular gas and stars are often misaligned, implying an external gas origin in over a third of all systems, more than half in the field, while external gas accretion must be shot down in clusters. Third, many objects appear to be in the process of forming regular kpc-size decoupled disks, and a star formation sequence can be sketched by piecing together multi-wavelength information on the molecular gas, current star formation, and young stars. Fourth, early-type galaxies do not seem to systematically obey all our usual prejudices regarding star formation (e.g. Schmidt-Kennicutt law, far infrared-radio continuum correlation), suggesting a greater diversity in star formation processes than observed in disk galaxies and the possibility of "morphological quenching". Lastly, a first step toward constraining the physical properties of the molecular gas is taken, by modeling the line ratios of density- and opacity-sensitive molecules in a few objects. Taken together, these observations argue for the continuing importance of (minor) mergers and cold gas accretion in local early-types, and they provide a much greater understanding of the gas cycle in the galaxies harbouring most of the stellar mass. In the future, better dust masses and dust-to-gas mass ratios from Herschel should allow to place entirely independent constraints on the gas supply, while spatially-resolved high-density molecular gas tracers observed with ALMA will probe the interstellar medium and star formation laws locally in a regime entirely different from that normally probed in spiral galaxies.

  • In this paper, cold heat price contained in the 1 ton/h of LNG has been evaluated using PRO/II with PROVISION release 10.2 from Aveva company when LNG is used to liquefy several refrigerants instead of using vapor recompression refrigeration cycle. Normal butane, R134a, NH3, R22, propane and propylene refrigerants were selected for the modeling of refrigeration cycle. It was concluded that LNG cold heat price was inversely proportional to the refrigerant supply temperature, even though LNG supply flow rate is not varied according to the refrigerant supply temperature.

  • Formation of self-gravitating gas clouds and hence stars in galaxies is a consequence of both thermal and dynamical evolution of a gaseous medium. Using hydrodynamics simulations including cooling and heating explicitly, we follow simultaneously thermal and dynamical evolution of galactic gas disks to study dynamics and structures of galactic spiral shocks with thermal instability and regulation of the star formation rates (SFRs). We first perform one-dimensional simulations in direction perpendicular to spiral arms. The multiphase gas flows across the arm soon achieve a quasi-steady state characterized by transitions from warm to cold phases at the shock and from cold to warm phases in the postshock expansion zone, producing a substantial fraction of intermediate-temperature gas. Next, we allow a vertical degree of freedom to model vertically stratified disks. The shock front experiences unsteady flapping motions, driving a significant amount of random gas motions, and self-gravity promotes formation of bound clouds inside spiral arms. Finally, we include the star formation feedback in both mechanical (due to supernova explosion) and radiative (due to FUV heating by young stars) forms in the absence of spiral arms. At saturation, gravitationally bound clouds form via thermal and gravitational instabilities, which are compensated by disruption via supernova explosions. We find that the FUV heating regulates the SFRs when gas surface density is low, confirming the prediction of the thermal and dynamical equilibrium model of Ostriker et al. (2010) for star formation regulation.

  • An experimental study on the spray characteristics of Gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors(GCSCI) for high-performance staged combustion rocket engines has been carried out using cold flow tests. In this study, water and gaseous nitrogen are used as working fluids and a back-lit photography technique with image processing for the measurements of spray characteristics. Our study is focused on the effect of injector geometries like as gap thickness of liquid nozzle and gas nozzle and momentum flux ratio for fundamental understanding of the injectors.

  • In this study, we analyzed flow characteristics of micro-nozzles for basic research to develop micro propulsion system. Cold gas propulsion system was used, and micro-nozzles having nozzle throat diameters of 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 mm were fabricated with EDM method. Thrust was measured through the use of plate-spring and strain gage based thrust measurement system, and flow characteristics of micro-nozzles were analyzed under ambient condition and vacuum condition. We used argon and nitrogen gases as propellant, and compared experimental results with CFD analysis. From the result, we verified the flow losses of viscosity and back-pressure caused by minimization of nozzle.
