  • We observed sea level variation of the long time at Kerguelen island in the South Indian Ocean with ARGOS data and meteorological data during about 1 year(May 1993~March 1994) through using filter, spectral analysis, coherency and phase, and found characteristics for the two oceanic signal levels(detided oceanic signal level, h$_{detided}$ and seasonal oceanic level, h$_{corr.ib}$). The forms of variations are very well agreed to between ARGOS data and meteorological data for atmospheric pressure in the observed periods. The seasonal difference of sea level between Summer and Winter is about 1.6cm. Both the detided oceanic signal level(h$_{detided}$) variation and the inverted barometer level(h$_{ib}$) variation have a strong correlation for T>1day period bands. Characteristics of h$_{detided}$ variation are decided not by the influence of any meteorological distributions (pressure, winds, etc), but the influence of another factors(temperature, salinity, etc.) for T>2days periods bands. h$_{corr.ib}$ plays an very important role of sea level variation of the long time term(especially T>about 180days period bands).

  • We studied the sea level variations at Kerguelen island in the South Indian Ocean with ARGOS data and meteorological data during about 1 year(May 1993~April 1994) through using filter, spectral analysis, coherency and phase, and found characteristics for the two oceanic signal levels(detided oceanic signal level, h$_{detided}$ and seasonal oceanic level, h$_{corr.ib}$). The forms of atmospheric pressure variations are good agreed to between ARGOS data and meteorological data in the observed periods. This Kerguelen area shows the inflow of an air temperature(gain of a radiant heat) into the sea water and the stagnation of high atmospheric pressure bands in summer, and the outflow of a sea water temperature(loss of sensible and latent heat) toward the atmosphere and the stagnation of low atmospheric pressure bands in winter. The seasonal difference of sea level between summer and winter is about 1.6cm. Both the detided oceanic signal level(h$_{detided}$) variation and the inverted barometer level(h$_{ib}$) variation have a strong correlation for T>1day period bands. The characteristics of h$_{detided}$ variation are not decided by the influence of any meteorological distributions (atmospheric pressure), but the influence of other factors(bottom water temperature) for T>2days periods bands. h$_{corr.ib}$ plays a very important role of sea level variation in the observed periods (especially T>about 180days period bands).

  • To overcome the difficulty of performing multi-point response spectrum analysis for engineering structures under spatially varying ground motions (SVGM) using the general finite element code such as ANSYS, an approach has been developed by improving the modelling of the input ground motions in the spectral analysis. Based on the stochastic vibration analyses, the cross-power spectral density (c-PSD) matrix is adopted to model the stationary SVGM. The design response spectra are converted into the corresponding PSD model with appropriate coherency functions and apparent wave velocities. Then elements of c-PSD matrix are summarized in the row and the PSD matrix is transformed into the response spectra for a general spectral analysis. A long-span high-pier bridge under multiple support excitations is analyzed using the proposed approach considering the incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The proposed approach is deemed to be an efficient numerical method that can be used for seismic analysis of large engineering structures under SVGM.

  • An electron probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA) is an essential tool for studying chemical composition distribution in the microstructure. Quantifying chemical composition using standard specimens is commonly used to determine the composition of individual phases. However, the local difference in chemical composition in the standard specimens brings the deviation of the quantified composition from the actual one. This study introduces how to overcome the error of quantification in EPMA in the practical aspect. The obtained results are applied to evaluate the chemical com position of retained austenite in multi-phase steel. Film-type austenite shows higher carbon content than blocky-type one. The measured carbon contents of the retained austenite show good coherency with the calculated value from the X-ray diffraction.

  • Coherent oscillations in is fluorescence dynamics of W.-t. PYP and its site-directed mutants have been observed. Two oscillatory modes coupled with the ultrafast fluorescence due to the twisting of the excited chromophore were identified, a high ftequency mode (∼135 cm$\^$-1/) with ∼550 is damping time and a low frequency overdamped mode (-45 cm$\^$-1/) with ∼250 is damping time, respectively. Both modes disappear in the fluorescence dynamics of denatured PYP emphasizing the important role of the protein nanospace as the environment for photoreaction. The qualitative picture of fluorescence dynamics in site-directed mutants was rather similar to that in W.-t. PYP, i.e., similar oscillatory modes (∼130-140 cm$\^$-1/ and ∼40-70 cm$\^$-1/) have been observed. This indicates that the vibrational modes and electron-vibration couplings do not change dramatically due to the mutation though the damping time of low frequency mode a little decreases as the protein nanospace structure becomes looser and more disordered by mutation. On the other hand, in the case of some PYP analogues, the qualitative picture of fluorescence dynamics changes, showing the familiar picture of solvation effect whereas the oscillations are almost damped. Comparative analyses of these observations are presented.

  • We present a novel GPU-based ray-casting algorithm for volume rendering of unstructured grid data. Our volume rendering system uses a ray-casting method that guarantees accurate rendering results. We also employ the per-pixel intersection list concept in the Bunyk algorithm to guarantee an accurate result for non-convex meshes. For efficient memory access for the lists on the GPU, we represent the intersection lists for all faces as an array with our novel construction algorithm. With the intersection lists, we perform ray-casting on a GPU, and a GPU thread handles each ray. To increase ray-coherency in a thread block and improve memory access efficiency, we extend a prior image-tile-based work distribution method to fit modern GPU architectures. We also show that a prior approach using a per-thread local buffer to reduce redundant computation is not appropriate for modern GPU architectures. Instead, we take an on-demand calculation strategy that achieves better performance even though it allows duplicate computations. We applied our method to three unstructured grid datasets with different characteristics. With a GPU, our method achieved up to 36.5 times higher performance for the ray-casting process and 19.7 times higher performance for the whole volume rendering process compared with the Bunyk algorithm using a CPU core. Also, our approach showed up to 8.2 times higher performance than a GPU-based cell projection method while generating more accurate rendering results. These results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of our method.

  • This study set the standard for label standardization of foreign sports apparel. Based on the theory of labels, the labels were scanned around the internal T-shirt of sports apparel brands. Based on the plan, 32 young men and women surveyed 32 tentative labels. As a result, The survey revealed that the respondents preferred the information of size, fit, washing symbol mark, and function. Based on these results, the complementary labels were designed for balance, simplicity, coherency, cognitive, and harmonization. The study interviewed 12 men and women in their 20s and 30s. As a result, the subjects indicated that they selected cognitive preference for labels because of the maximum, minimum spacing, and emphasis on information representative.

  • It is extremely important to minimize network access time in constructing a high-performance PC cluster system For an SCI based PC cluster it is possilbe to reduce the network access time by maintaining network cache in each cluster node, This paper presents a CC-NUMA card that utilizes network cache for SCI based PC clustering The CC-NUMA card is directly plugged into the PCI solot of each node, and contains shared memory network cache, and interconnection modules. The network cache is maintained for the shared memory on the PCI bus of cluster nodes. The coherency mechanism between the network cache and the shared memory is based on the IEEE SCI standard. A CC-NUMA prototype card is developed to evaluate the performance of the system. According to the experiments. the cluster system with the CC-NUMA card showed considerable improvements compared with an SCI based clustser without network cache.

  • In the earlier study, Park (2002) described the process of student' conceptual change as a successive refinement and articulation of their conceptual framework. In this study, the process of conceptual change for three university students were analyzed more in depth. As results, six types of conceptual change through successive refinement and articulation were observed: (1) original conception was elaborated in detail, (2) conception was differentiated according to the context, (3) some conceptions were re-explained theoretically after construction it based on experimental data, (4) non-coherent conceptions in the early stage get to have coherency in the later stage, (5) model of explanation gets to be complicated by excluding ideal conditions, (6) qualitative explanations were changed into quantitative ones.

  • Database sharing system (DSS) refers to a system for high performance transaction processing. In DSS, the processing nodes are locally coupled via a high speed network and share a common database at the disk level. Each node has a local memory, a separate copy of operating system, and a DB'\fS. To reduce the number of disk accesses, the node caches database pages in its local memory buffer. However, since multiple nodes may be simultaneously cached a page, cache consistency must be cnsured so that every node can always access the'latest version of pages. In this paper, we propose efficient cache consistency schemes in DSS, where the database is logically partitioned using primary copy authority to reduce locking overhead, The proposed schemes can improve performance by reducing the disk access overhead and the message overhead due to maintaining cache consistency, Furthermore, they can show good performance when database workloads are varied dynamically.
