  • Automotive headlamps have been continuously developed as one of the most important devices for securing the driver's view, and the LED lamps are getting popular in recent years. However, in case of the LED lamps, because the heat generated by the LED lamps are too high, it shorten the product life and lower the LED efficiency. Therefore, this study was investigated the cooling characteristics of the LED lamp heat sink for automobile by forced convection for LED heat generation control. In order to analyze the cooling characteristics of the heat sink, the temperature distribution results were investigated through the experiment and computational analysis under the increase of the air flow velocity, and the convective heat transfer coefficient was obtained. Also, convective heat transfer coefficient was calculated by the theoretical formula under the same condition and compared with experimental and computational results. From the result of this study, as the air flow velocity around the heat sink fins increased, the convective heat transfer coefficient significantly increased, confirming the improvement in the cooling effect.

  • In the present study, natural convection over a heat sink with a horizontal circular base and rectangular fins was numerically analyzed. To calculate natural convection heat transfer, the assumptions of ideal gas and laminar flow were made for air. Flow patterns around the heat sink were chimney-like. The resultant temperature distribution on the circular base appeared almost uniform. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effects of fin length, fin height, the ideal number of fins, and heat flux on the average temperature of a heat sink and the average heat transfer coefficient from the heat sink array. Correlation to predict the average Nusselt number was presented.

  • Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, governing 2-dimensional, time-dependent, viscous, incompressible fluid flow past a square cylinde in an infinite region, are presented for Reynolds numbers $10^2$, $10^3$and $10^4$. Finite-difference scheme, based on SOLA-VOF is adopted and a discretization of the convection term for irregular grid is newly suggested by altering the original nonconservation form into conservation one. Distribution of finer grids around the body reveals fairly reasonable consistency with the experimental variables : drag coefficient, lift coefficient, Strouhal number, fluctuating pressure coefficient, etc.

  • The effects of variable viscosity, blowing or suction on mixed convection flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a semi-infinite horizontal flat plate aligned parallel to a uniform free stream in the presence of the wall temperature distribution inversely proportional to the square root of the distance from the leading edge have been investigated. The equations governing the flow are transformed into a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations by using similarity variables. The similarity equations have been solved numerically. The effect of the viscosity temperature parameter, the buoyancy parameter and the blowing or suction parameter on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the skin-friction coefficient and the Nusselt number are discussed.

  • The characteristics of flows, temperatures, concentrations of the boron are numerically studied when uniform axial magnetic fields are applied in the Czechralski crucible. The to governing factors to the flow regimes are buoyancy, thermocapillarity, centrifugal forces, magnetic forces, diffusion coefficient and segregation coefficient of the boron. Since the concentration of the boron is so low that buoyancy effects are negligible, it cannot affect the flow and temperature fields. From the fact that the flow fields are rotationally symmetric, two velocity components in the meridional plane and the circumferential velocity are calculated together with the temperature in the steady state. Based on the known velocity and temperature distributions the unsteady concentration distributions of the boron are calculated. As the strength of the magnetic is increased, the flow velocities are decreased. Circumferential velocities are large near the crucible side-wall and in the region below the rotating crystal. Steep temperatures gradient near the edge of the rotating crystal causes the Marangoni convection. It has been found out that the convection characteristics affects the unsteady transport phenomena of the boron.

  • This study presents the numerical analysis of natural convection of a micro- environments with air permeability in the clothing air-layer. As a numerical model the clothing air layer of shoulder and arm were adopted. Finite volume method for two-dimensional laminar flow was used for the analysis of flow and thermal characteristics of velocity, temperature and concentration in the air layer between body and clothing. As temperature boundary conditions, a body skin has a high temperature with $34^{\circ}C$ and the environmental temperatures are 5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$ for various permeability coefficients. The distributions of concentration, temperature and velocity are shown that two large cells form at horizontal and vertical air layer, respectively. As the temperature difference between body skin and environment decreases, the heat transfer is decreased rapidly.

  • Two-phase flow boiling experiments were conducted using FC-72 as the working fluid. The micro-channels consisted of 15 channels with a depth of 0.2 mm, width of 0.45 mm, and length of 60 mm. Tests were performed over a mass flux range of $200-400kg/m^2s$, heat flux range of $5.6-49.0kW/m^2$, and vapor quality range of 0.02-0.93. Based on the results of the experiment, the heat transfer mechanism by nucleate boiling was dominant at a lower vapor quality (x<0.2), whereas that in the region of a vapor quality greater than 0.2 was complexly influenced by nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling. The nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling could be expressed as functions of the boiling number and convection number, respectively. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient obtained by the experiment was compared with the heat transfer coefficient by the existing correlation.

  • In the present study a numerical simulation is performed on a natural convection inside a square cavity with a vibrating wall. The study has been conducted varying the heat transfer rate, wall excitation frequency and also the orientation of the cavity. The temperature and velocities inside the cavity was observed and also, the heat transfer coefficients on the heating wall was seen. From the results, it can be seen that the temperature inside the cavity decreases when excited with the proper frequency and the heat transfer coefficient increased with cavity inclination angle, ${\theta}$. It is also found from the results that flow resonance is occurred near the inclination angle ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$.

  • In this paper, natural convection around the ambient evaporator was numerically studied using commercial computational fluid dynamics software. From the simulations, temperature and velocity fields around the evaporator were found as a function of evaporator size and liquefied gas flow rate. The heat transfer coefficient at the external surface of the evaporator was also calculated from the simulation results. In order to give the heat transfer coefficient for various conditions, correlation between Rayleigh number and Nusselt number was proposed.

  • The Passive containment Air-cooling System (PAS) can effectively remove the decay heat of the modular small nuclear reactor after an accident. The details of natural convection around the dome, which is a key part of PAS, were investigated numerically in the present study. The thermal dynamics around the dome were studied through the temperature, pressure and velocity contours and the streamlines. Additionally, the formation of the buoyant plume at the top of the dome was investigated. The results show that with the increase of Ra, the lift-off point moves toward the bottom of the dome, and the eddy under the buoyant plume grows larger gradually, which enhances the heat transfer. And the heat transfer along the dome surface with different truncation angles was investigated. As the angle increases, the heat transfer coefficient becomes stronger as well. Consequently, a newly developed heat transfer correlation considering the influence of truncation angle for the dome is proposed based on the simulated results. This study could provide a better understanding of natural convection around the dome of PAS and the proposed correlation could also offer more predictive value in the improvement of nuclear safety.
