  • This paper investigates how individual speakers' speech can be distinguished using acoustic parameters such as amplitude, pitch, and formant frequencies. Word samples from fifteen male speakers in their 20's in three different regions were recorded in two different modes (i.e., casual and clear speech) in quiet settings, and were analyzed with a Praat macro scrip. In order to determine individual speakers' acoustical values, the total duration of voicing segments was measured in five different timepoints. Results showed that a high correlation coefficient between $F_1\;and\;F_2$ in formant frequency was found among the speakers although there was little correlation coefficient between amplitude and pitch. Statistical grouping shows that individual speakers' voices were not reflected in regional dialects for both casual and clear speech. In addition, the difference of maximum and minimum in amplitude was about 10 dB which indicates a perceptually audible degree. These acoustic data can give some meaningful guidelines for implementing algorithms of speaker identification and speaker verification.

  • Palm vein identification has attracted attention due to its distinct characteristics and excellent recognition accuracy. However, many contactless palm vein identification systems suffer from the issue of having low-quality palm images, resulting in degradation of recognition accuracy. This paper proposes the use of U-Net architecture to correctly segment the vascular blood vessel from palm images. Attention gate mechanism and residual block are also utilized to effectively learn the crucial features of a specific segmentation task. The experiments were conducted on CASIA dataset. Hessian-based Jerman filtering method is applied to label the palm vein patterns from the original images, then the network is trained to segment the palm vein features from the background noise. The proposed method has obtained 96.24 IoU coefficient and 98.09 dice coefficient.

  • Purpose: The standard tool for the pattern identification is used for identifying patterns in patients using a questionnaire. The purpose of this study is to reorganize the standard tool for the pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) developed in 2017 and to analyze the reliability and validity of the standard tool for pattern identification by applying it to GERD patients. Methods: To reorganize the standard tool for the pattern identification of GERD developed in the previous study, we searched the literature in the main databases, OASIS (Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System) and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure). We added the search results to the data used in the previous study and went through the reorganizing courses, such as evaluating the validity of the translation, the Delphi technique, and a small survey. After reorganization, the patients who visited the Kyunghee University Korean Medicine Center for GERD symptoms were provided the questionnaire, including the reorganized standard tool for pattern identification. We analyzed the survey results to evaluate their reliability and validity. Results: Fifty patients completed the questionnaire. Reliability analysis results showed a pattern identification match rate of 86%, Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.834, and intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.907. The Mann - Whitney U test and logistic regression were implemented to check the relations between the survey questions and pattern identification results; the Pearson correlation, compared with other scales, showed a moderate score. Conclusion: We reorganized the standard tool for the pattern identification of GERD to be updated on current issues and so that it is easily used. The analysis results of the questionnaire showed that the reorganized standard tool had high reliability and moderate validity.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare & to find out the variability of head film measurements (and marks identification) between Fuji computed radiographic cephalometry and conventional cephalometry. 28 Korean adults were selected. Lateral cephalometric FCR film and conventional cephalometric film of each subject was taken. Four investigators identified 24 cephalometric landmarks on lateral cephalometric FCR film and conventional cephalometric film. The comparable measurements between lateral cephalometric FCR film and conventional cephalometric film were statistically analysed. The results were as follows : 1. In FCR film & conventional film, coefficient of variation (C.V.) of 24 landmarks was taken horizonta1ly & vertically. There is no significant difference of rank order of landmarks in C.V. between two films. 2. In comparison of significant differences of landmarks variability between FCR film & conventional film, horizontal value of coefficient of variation, showed significant differences in four landmarks among twenty-four landmarks, but vertical value of coefficient of variation showed significant differences in sixteen landmarks among twenty-four landmarks. FCR film showed significantly less variability than conventional film in 17 subjects among 20(4+16) subjects that showed significant difference.

  • In this study, the algorithm for detection of evoked potentials is proposed. The observed evoked potentials are first preprocessed by blind identification so as to eliminate the ongoing EEG Bile noise. Then, statistic characteristics of the peak components i.e latency and amplitude are detected from prefiltered responses by latency-corrected averaging method. The performance of blind identification is compared with those of adaptive fillers as to deterministic and stochastic EPs, is assessed in terms of NMSE, distortion index, correlation coefficient with original EPs. The estimated deterministic and stochastic EPs restored with peak components are compared and assessed. The results show the superiority of this proposed algorithm using blind identification in detecting deterministic and stochastic EPs.

  • Background: Alcohol is well established as a risk factor for cancer development in many organ sites. To assess the reliability and validity of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption (AUDIT-C) for detecting alcohol use disorders or risky drinking in Japanese adults the present study was conducted. Materials and Methods: A test-retest method was applied with a 2-week interval with 113 health care employees. The k coefficient, Cronbach's coefficient alpha, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were determined and the validity of the AUDIT-C was analyzed using the data from a nationwide survey on adult alcohol use conducted in 2008 (n=4,123). Results: The reliability of the AUDIT-C score was high (${\kappa}$ coefficient=0.63, Cronbach's alpha=0.98, correlation coefficient=0.95, and ICC=0.95). According to the likelihood ratio and Youden index, appropriate cutoffs for the AUDIT-C were ${\geq}5points$ in men and ${\geq}4$ points in women. The sensitivity and specificity of these cutoffs for identifying ${\geq}8$ points on the AUDIT were 0.88 and 0.80, respectively, for men (positive likelihood ratio [LR+]=4.5) and 0.96 and 0.87, respectively, for women (LR+=7.7). The sensitivity and specificity of the cutoffs for identifying ${\geq}12$ points on the AUDIT were 0.90 and 0.84, respectively, for men (LR+=5.8) and 0.93 and 0.94, respectively, for women (LR+=15.8). The sensitivity and specificity of the cutoffs for identifying ${\geq}16$ points on the AUDIT were 0.93 and 0.80, respectively, for men (LR+=4.7) and 0.92 and 0.98, respectively, for women (LR+=55.6). With higher scores on the AUDIT, the specificity decreased and false-positives increased. The appropriate cutoffs for identifying risky drinking were the same for both genders. Conclusions: The reliability and validity of the AUDIT-C are high, indicating that it is useful for identifying alcohol use disorders or risky drinking among the general population in Japan, a group at high risk of cancer development.

  • This paper presents the development of a squeeze film damper (SFD) test rig and experimental identification of the effects of clearance, damper length, journal eccentricity ratio, excitation amplitude, oil supply pressure, and oil flow rate on the damping coefficients of a test SFD with open ends and a central groove. Test data are compared with predictions from a simple model developed for short SFDs with open ends and a central groove. The test results show a significant decrease in the damping coefficient with increasing clearance and a dramatic increase with damper length, which are in good agreement with the simple model predictions. According to the simple model, the damping coefficient is inversely proportional to the cube of the clearance and directly proportional to the cube of the length. An increase in the journal eccentricity ratio results in a dramatic increase in the damping coefficient by as much as 15 times that of the concentric case, particularly at low excitation frequencies. By contrast, the measured damping coefficient remains almost constant with changes in the excitation amplitude and supply pressure, which are not major factors in the damper design. In general, the test data agree well with the simple model predictions, excluding cases that show increases in the SFD length and journal eccentricity, which indicate significant dependency on the excitation frequency.
