  • Because it is easy to implement the scalar quantizer, it is used in various video coding systems. Although the scalar quantizer with a large quantization stepsize can reduce the amount of data, it has disadvantage that the reconstructed picture quality is poor. In this paper, we propose an efficient method which improves the coding performance by maintaining original quantization stepsize and increasing the number of quantization reconstruction levels. Simultaneously, for the purpose of solving the problem of transmitting the added symbol informations which is used to indicate the region of quantizer reconstruction level as the number of quantizer reconstruction level is increased, we also suggest the method to reduce the added informations. Therefore, for the intra-coded picture of H.264 video coding system, we generate the huffman codes for the symbol informations of quantization reconstruction regions by 4${\times}$4(horizontal 4 pixels, vertical pixels) block unit. Furthermore, for the inter-coded picture, we also generate the huffman codes for the symbol informations of quantization reconstruction regions by 8${\times}$8 blocks and 4${\times}$4 blocks within a macroblock. Adopting this method of reducing the added information by increasing the number of quantization reconstruction region, It is shown that the coding performance can be improved at the same bitrate.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast and dynamic Region-of-Interest coding method using the adaptive code-block discrimination algorithm in JPEG2000 images which complements the implicit ROI coding method and the modified implicit ROI coding method. For reducing the time of discriminating the code block, the proposed method estimates the characteristics of the shape of ROI and makes the shape of boundaries, and classifies the patterns of each code block. The method improves the preferred processing and loss of wavelet coefficients of background within the ROI code blocks by adaptively classifying the code blocks with the percentage of content of the wavelet coefficients using the thresholds of ROI and background. Also, the priority control of wavelet coefficients of background within ROI code block supports the rapid ROI coding by processing in batch based on patterns unlike the existing methods that process with unit of wavelet coefficients. To show the usefulness of this method, we compared this to the existing methods. There is no difference in performance, but we confirmed very speedy in processing time.

  • Multi-view video coding (MVC) based on H.264/AVC encodes multiple views efficiently by using a prediction scheme that exploits inter-view correlation among multiple views. However, with the increase of the number of views and use of inter-view prediction among views, total encoding time will be increased in multiview video coding. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision using both MB(Macroblock)-based region segmentation information corresponding to each view in multiple views and global disparity vector among views in order to reduce encoding time. The proposed method achieves on average 40% reduction of total encoding time with the objective video quality degradation of about 0.04 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by using joint multi-view video model (JMVM) 4.0 that is the reference software of the multiview video coding standard.

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264 standard uses new coding tools which are not used in previous coding standards. Among new coding tools, motion estimation using smaller block sizes leads to higher correlation between the motion vectors of neighboring blocks. This characteristic of H.264 is useful for the motion vector recovery. In this paper, we propose the motion vector recovery method based on optical flow. Since the proposed method estimates the optical flow velocity vector from more accurate initial value and optical flow region is limited to 16$\times$16 block size, we can alleviate the complexity of computation of optical flow velocity. Simulation results show that our proposed method gives higher objective and subjective video quality than previous methods.

  • The Sinusoidal Transform Coding(STC) is a vocoding scheme based on a sinusoidal model of a speech signal. The low bit-rate speech coding based on sinusoidal model is a method that models and synthesizes speech with fundamental frequency and its harmonic elements, spectral envelope and phase in the frequency region. In this paper, we propose the 2.4kbps low-rate speech coding algorithm using the sinusoidal model of a speech signal. In the proposed coder, the pitch frequency is estimated by choosing the frequency that makes least mean squared error between synthetic speech with all spectrum peaks and speech synthesized with chosen frequency and its harmonics. The spectral envelope is estimated using SEEVOC(Spectral Envelope Estimation VOCoder) algorithm and the discrete all-pole model. The phase information is obtained using the time of pitch pulse occurrence, i.e., the onset time, as well as the phase of the vocal tract system. Experimental results show that the synthetic speech preserves both the formant and phase information of the original speech very well. The performance of the coder has been evaluated in terms of the MOS test based on informal listening tests, and it achieved over the MOS score of 3.1.

  • One of the most significant characteristics of JPEG2000. the emerging still image standards. is the ROI (Region of Interest) coding. JPEG2000 provides a number of ROI coding mechanisms and ROI parameters. To apply them to an application, it must select the applicable values. In this paper, we evaluate how the ROI coding mechanisms and the ROI parameters influencing JPEG2000 qualify affect the ROI quality and the whole image quality. The ROI coding mechanisms are Maxshift and Implicit. and the parameters are tile size and ROI size, codeblock size, number of DWT decomposition levels and ROI importance. The bigger the tile size, the better the quality. The bigger the ROI size, the ROI importance and the number of DWT decomposition levels, the worse the qualify. In code block $32{\times}32$ of Maxshift and Implicit, it has the best qualify.

  • A gene (xynA) encoding the endo-xylanase (E.C.3.2.1.8) from Bacillus stearothermophilus was cloned in E. coli, and its complete nucleotide sequence was determined. The xynA gene consists of a 636 base pairs open reading frame coding for a protein of 212 amino acids with a deduced molecular weight of 23, 283 Da. A putative signal sequence of 27 amino acid residues shows the features comparable with the Bacillus signal sequences; namely, the signal contains a positively charged region close to the N-terminus followed by a long hydrophobic string. The coding sequence is preceded by a possible ribosome binding site with a free energy value of -16.6 kcal/mol and the transcription initiation signals are located further upstream. The translation termination codon (TAA) at the 3 end of the coding sequence is followed by two palindrome sequences, one of which is thought to act as a terminator. The xynA gene has a high GC content, especially in the wobble position of codons (64%). Comparison of the primary protein sequence with those of other xylanases shows a high homology to the xylanases belonging to family G.

  • A transform coding scheme for the transmission of audio data in ZigBee based wireless personal area networks (WPAN) is presented in this paper. Here, wavelet transform is exploited to encode the features of audio data included mainly in the low frequency region. As a result, it is confirmed that the presented scheme recovers the original audio signals much accurately while it transmits the binary data compressed as 37.5% of the entire data generated without coding scheme. Especially, the mean-squared error between the recovered and original audio data approaches $10^{-4}$ when the signal-to-noise power ratio is sufficiently high. Hence, the presented coding scheme which exploits the wavelet transform is possibly applied for high-quality audio data transmission services in a small-scale sensor network based on ZigBee. Such a result is considered to be applicable as a basic material to update the technical specifications and develop the applications of ZigBee in WPANs.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient coding method of remotely sensed satellite image using region classification and interband prediction. This method classifies each pixel vector considering spectral characteristics of satellite image data. Then we perform the classified intraband VQ to remove spatial (intraband) redundancy for a reference band image. To remove interband redundancy effectively, we perform the classified interband prediction for the remaining band images. Experiments on LANDSAT TM satellite image show that coding efficiency of the proposed method is better than that of the conventional Gupta's method.

  • Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a malignancy with a poor prognosis. We aimed to explore whether the expression of Long Non-Coding RNA (LncRNA) growth arrest-specific transcript 5 (GAS5) is associated with RCC genesis. Methods: We selected twelve clinical samples diagnosed for renal clear cell carcinoma and found that the LncRNA GAS5 transcript levels were significantly reduced relative to those in adjacent unaffected normal renal tissues. Results: In addition, expression of GAS5 was lower in the RCC cell line A498 than that in normal renal cell line HK-2. Furthermore, using functional expression cloning, we found that overexpression of GAS5 in A498 cells inhibited cell proliferation, induced cell apoptosis and arrested cell cycling. At the same time, the migration and invasion potential of A498 cells were inhibited compared to control groups. Conclusion: Our study provided the first evidence that a decrease in GAS5 expression is associated with RCC genesis and progression and overexpression of GAS5 can act as a tumor suppressor for RCC, providing a potential attractive therapeutic approach for this malignancy.
