  • An evaluation and comparison of seven of the world's major building codes and standards is conducted in this study, with specific discussion of their estimations of the alongwind, acrosswind, and torsional response, where applicable, for a given building. The codes and standards highlighted by this study are those of the United States, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, China and Europe. In addition, the responses predicted by using the measured power spectra of the alongwind, acrosswind and torsional responses for several building shapes tested in a wind tunnel are presented and a comparison between the response predicted by wind tunnel data and that estimated by some of the standards is conducted. This study serves not only as a comparison of the response estimates by international codes and standards, but also introduces a new set of wind tunnel data for validation of wind tunnel-based empirical expressions.

  • For the fatigue design of offshore structures, it is essential to understand and use the S-N curves specified in various industry standards and codes. This study compared the characteristics of the S-N curves for five major codes. The codes reviewed in this paper were DNV Classification Rules (DNV GL, 2016), ABS Classification Rules (ABS, 2003), British Standards (BSI, 2015), International Welding Association Standards (IIW, 2008), and European Standards (BSI, 2005). Types of stress, such as nominal stress, hot-spot stress, and effective notch stress, were analyzed according to the code. The basic shape of the S-N curve for each code was analyzed. A review of the survival probability of the basic design S-N curve for each code was performed. Finally, the impact on the conservatism of the design was analyzed by comparing the S-N curves of three grades D, E, and F by the five codes. The results presented in this paper are considered to be a good guideline for the fatigue design of offshore structures because the S-N curves of the five most-used codes were analyzed in depth.

  • The subcommittee 3 (SC3) of Technical Committee 108 (TC 108) covers the calibration of mechanical vibration and shock measuring pickups and instruments. This paper introduces what KS codes are linked to the ISO standards developed by TC108 / SC3. It is shown that the KS codes do not fulfill the full set of ISO codes approved in the field of TC 108/SC3. Series of ISO standards established by the Working Group 6 (WG6) of SC3 are introduced. Main objectives of those WG 6 efforts are shown to replace the old versions of ISO 5347 series into new ISO 16063 series. Their features are briefly summarized in this paper. Finally, challenging technical issues underlying behind ISO TC108 / SC3 are addressed,, such as MEMS typed linear and angular vibration pickups.

  • This paper presents investigation of topographic effects over isolated 3-dimensional hills through wind tunnel experiments in a boundary layer wind tunnel. Topographic models having five different slopes of $5.71^{\circ},\;11.31^{\circ},\;16.70^{\circ},\;21.80^{\circ}$, and $26.57^{\circ}$, which were based on KBC(2005), were taken into account in the study. The maximum topographic factor and the range of topographic effect from the experiment were compared with those from worldwide major codes and standards, such as ASCE-7-02, AS/NZS-1170.2:2002, ISO4354(1997), and KBC(2005). From the comparison of major codes and standards, in the vertical region of topographic effect, the gentler the slope was. the more different the topographic factors and ranges of topographic effect were, but the steeper the slope was, the more similar they were. It was found from the experimental study that the region of topographic effect in the slope in the across wind direction was greater than the regions of major codes and standard. Also, the gentler the slope was. the larger the topographic factor from the experiment was than the factors of major codes and standards.

  • Buildings with mono-sloped roofs are used for different purposes like at railway platforms, restaurants, industrial buildings, etc. Between two types of mono-slope roofs, clad and unclad, unclad canopy types are more vulnerable to wind load as wind produces pressure on both upper and lower surfaces of the roof, resulting in uplifting of the roof surface. This paper discusses the provisions of wind loads in different codes and standards for Low-rise buildings. Further, the pressure coefficients on mono-slope canopy roof available in wind code and standards are compared. Previous experimental studies for mono-slope canopy roof along with the recent wind tunnel testing carried out at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is briefly discussed and compared with the available wind codes. From the study it can further be asserted that the information available related to staging or blocking under the mono-slope canopy roofs is limited. This paper is an attempt to put together the available information in different wind codes/standards and the research works carried out by different researchers, along with shedding some light on the future scopes of research on mono-slope canopy roofs.

  • This thesis draws institutional problem about safety of architectural structure through analysis of architectural structure regulation. The law of analysis target are building codes, enforcement ordinance of building codes, enforcement regulations of building codes, regulation for structure standards of building, building structure standards. The analysis showed there are imperfections in confirmed procedural application of structure safety and suggested reformation. It's necessary to make supplementary policies for the suitability of the term use and the structure safety certificate of compliance, establishing a special structure code.

  • Current codes of practice do not exist in isolation, and rules that have been developed assume certain material properties and minimum workmanship in fabrication and erection. These are either in separate documents or different parts of the code. This paper explains the main requirements for materials and workmanship and how they can be related to design and construction in general. The use of very high strength steels is also considered and the measures that may be needed to allow their use with modern codes are also presented.

  • Food-borne illnesses remain a world-wide public heath problem, Codex food standards, codes of practice and other guidelines protect consumers from unsafe food. Codex Alimentarius helps to reach this goal by combining consumer protection with food production and trade. Codex provides reassurance to anyone anywhere that foods produced according to its codes of hygienic practice and complying with its standards are safe and nutritious and offer adequate health protection. The Codex Alimentarius Commission is a science-based, international organization. Its standards, guidelines and recommendations are recognized world-wide for their vital role in protecting the consumer and facilitation international trade. At the same time they allow food producers, processors and traders access to markets by breaking down artificial nontariff barriers to trade.

  • In this paper, the modified iterative decoding algorithm[8] by partitioning check nodes is applied to low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes in IEEE 802.16e standards, which gives us the improvement for convergence speed of decoding. Also, the new method of check node partitioning which is suitable for decoding of the LDPC codes in IEEE 802.16e system is proposed. The improvement of convergence speed in decoding reduces the number of iterations and thus the computational complexity of the decoder. The decoding method by partitioning check nodes can be applied to the LDPC codes whose decoder cannot be implemented in the fully parallel processing as an efficient sequential processing method. The modified iterative decoding method of LDPC codes using the proposed check node partitioning method can be used to implement the practical decoder in the wireless communication systems.

  • Standardization work for the ocean data produced by a variety of national oceanographic research projects was conducted in order to establish a national ocean data sharing system. For this work, we first prepared standard proposals for the national research ocean data by reviewing and analyzing of existing international and domestic ocean-data standards. The proposed standards were reviewed and revised by experts in the field of oceanography and academic societies for documentation. The 125-page technical report on the standards of 25 data items was prepared as an output of this research work, which is available free of charge for the public and interested parties. This paper explains the proposed standards of metadata and codes regarding the common properties of all the oceanographic data items. Especially, the standards for the metadata, codes and data formats of 4 physical data items were described in detail. In order to be adopted as the national standards for ocean data, however, the standards suggested here require further development and/or modification based on additional reviews of and ample feedbacks from the relevant academic and technical communities.
