The NF-l6D VISTA Simulation System

  • Called VISTA (Variable-stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft), the one-of-a-kind NF-l6D has a simulation system that can mimic several aircraft. Though housed in an F-l6 Fighting Falcon airframe, VISTA can also act like the F-15 Eagle or the Navy's F-14 Tomcat. More importantly, such flexibility allows for improved training and consolidation of some sorties. Consequently USAF Test Pilot School students will have an opportunity to learn how to test future integrated cockpits. In this paper we will use the multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) and the multiple model adaptive controller (MMAC) techniques to model the aircraft's flight control system containing the longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Single and dual actuator and sensor failures will also be included in the simulation. White Gaussian noise will be included to simulate the effects of atmospheric disturbances.

A Study on the Observer Training and Implementation for Effective Normal Operation Safety Survey (NOSS)

  • Normal Operation Safety Survey (NOSS) is a safety management tool used by air traffic control organizations to measure data related to threats and errors to proactively prevent accidents before they occur. NOSS was developed to be applied to the air traffic control field according to the concept of Line Operation Safety Audit (LOSA) conducted by airlines to reduce human errors in the cockpits. Safety management based on data is crucial for the prevention of control-related accidents, and the competency of observers for this is important for the successful implementation of NOSS. Based on LOSA implementation experiences and expert interviews, this paper introduces the international NOSS methods and discusses the key factors required for effective observation and the implementation methods and implications of NOSS observer training.

  • 인터넷 기반 분산/병렬 처리 시스템인 PDP(Parallel/Distributed Processing)는 인터넷의 유휴상태 호스트들을 이용하여 대용량 작업을 병렬로 처리해서 전체 수행 시간을 감소시킨다. 본 연구에서는 실시간 네트워크 모니터링을 활용하여 수시로 변화하는 네트워크 환경에 적응하여 병렬/분산 처리되는 방안을 제안한다. 실시간 네트워크 모니터링 정보를 PDP 주요 핵심 알고리즘들에 적용하여 네트워크 과부하 및 결함으로 발생하는 작업 지연 요소에 적응적으로 대처함으로써 전체 성능이 향상됨을 보인다.

자동화된 조종실에서의 조종사 태도에 관한 연구 (A study on Pilot's Behavior in the Automated Cockpit)

  • The objective of the study is to analyze the pilot's behavior such as preference and management technique to the automation of aircraft through Flight Management Attitude Questionnaire(FMAQ) survey. Participants in the survey are grouped in rank and nationality, and attitudes of those groups toward the automation are analyzed. Previous empirical studies have demonstrated large cross-nation differences in attitudes regarding task performance across several work domains including aviation. Analysis of the survey shows that the pilots in Asia region like the automation and its usage more than the pilots in western and Oceania regions. The trust in the automation is higher among glass cockpit pilots than among the conventional aircraft pilots. More foreign pilots than Korean pilots believe that the automation may deteriorate their flight skills. While more Korean pilots than foreign pilots agree that their flight skills can be kept by manual controls. The pilots also feel that the automated cockpits would require more verbal communications between crew members. For improving the automation management skills and the effective automation usage, the Situation Awareness training and Crew Resource Management(CRM) training are strongly suggested.

배경조건에 따른 Visual Field에서의 Stationary Field의 변화

  • Depending upon the eye and head movement, the visual field is often classified into three categories; stationary field, eye field and head field. To investigate the effect of background condition on the size of stationary field, an experiment was conducted, in which the subject was instructed to search a target with distinct orientations. In each trial, a single target was presented on the rear-view screen projected by the two-field tachistoscope, with the visual angle subtended 4.3.deg. vertically and horizontally. Density, meridian and subject showed a significant effect on stationary field at .alpha.=0.01, where density was inversely proportional to the size of stationary field. The size of the stationary field on horizontal axis was larger than that on vertical axis, and that on right and below meridian also larger than on left and lower meridian. The shape was found to be horizontally oriented oval and statistically asymmetric with respect to horizontal and vertical axes. The regression equation to predict stationary field on the given background condition was suggested. These results were expected to be used as a designing guideline when arranging displays and controls on panels such as automobile display panels, cockpits, etc. In addition, it can be inferred from the results that eye field and head field are also subjected to the influence of background condition.

제품설계와 평가를 위한 시각영역의 생성 (Generation of a practical visual field for the design and evaluation)

In each trial, a single target was presented on the perimeter modified to cover the range of 330 .deg. around the fixation point, with the visual angle subtended 1.4 .deg. vertically and horizontally. Nontarget density, meridian, size contrast and subject showed a significant effect on the visual field at .alpha. =0.01, where density was inversely proportional to the size of the visual field, and size contrast linearly proportional to the size of the visual field. The size of the visual field on horizontal axis was larger than that on vertical axis, and that on right and upper meridian was also larger than on left and lower meridian. The shape was found to be horizontally oriented oval and statistically asymmetric with respect to horizontal and vertical axes. In addition, the regression equations to predict the visual field on the given background condition were suggested. These results were expected to be used as a design guideline when arranging displays and controls on panels such as automobile display panels, cockpits, etc.

대형 비행기 조종사의 착륙 조작 시의 높이지각 (Height perception of large airplane pilots during landing flare)

  • 대형 비행기 조종사들은 지상으로부터 높은 조종실의 위치, 빠른 접근속도와 수직강하속도로 인하여 불충분한 시각정보를 바탕으로 착륙 조작을 하여야만 한다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 대형 비행기의 특징으로 인하여 비행기 착륙의 최종 조작인 당김(flare) 조작을 할 때 대형 비행기 조종사들이 정확한 높이지각을 하기 어렵다는 사실을 검증하였다. 연구 1에서는 조종석 외부로 보이는 공항에 대한 사진을 제시하고 높이 추정을 하도록 하여 정적 시각 단서만으로 정확한 높이지각이 가능한지를 살펴보았다. 85feet의 고도에서는 정확한 높이지각을 하나 당김 조작을 준비해야 하는 높이인 55feet부터 낮은 고도에서는 정확한 높이를 추정하지 못하였다. 연구 2에서는 착륙의 전 과정을 녹화한 화면을 보여주어 높이 추정을 하도록 하여 동적 시각 단서와 정적 시각 단서를 모두 제공하여 주었다. 시각단서가 연구 1보다 풍부하였으므로 50feet까지 정확한 높이지각을 하였으나 연구 1의 결과와 마찬가지로 당김 조작을 시작하는 높이인 30feet 이하의 저고도에서의 높이지각이 모두 부정확하였다. 시각 단서의 해석에 경험이 중요한 요인이므로 경험이 많은 기장과 경험이 적은 부기장 간의 높이 추정에 차이가 있는지를 연구 1과 연구 2에서 모두 비교하여 보았으나 차이는 유의하지 않았다.
