Preparation of the Cobalt Oxide Powder by Hot Petroleum Drying Method (석유증발법에 의한 Cobalt Oxide의 분말제조)

  • The characteristics of cobalt oxide powders prepared by hot petroleum drying method from the cobalt acetate were evaluated by DTA/TGA, XRD, BET, SEM and density measurement. The cobalt oxide powder could be prepared by hot petroleum drying of the emulsion of cobalt acetate salt solution and the subsequent thermal decomposition of the acetate at 300$^{\circ}C$. As the concentration of the salt solution and the calcination temperature of the dried powder increased, the surface area of the synthesized powder decreased due to the particle growth, so that after sintering the density and grain size decreased. For the same concentration of the salt solution, the surface area and sinterability of the powder by hot petroleum drying increased in comparision with those by conventional drying.

  • The effect of cobalt precursor on the structure of Co supported multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). MWCNTs were treated with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids and decorated with cobalt and/or cobalt oxides via aqueous impregnation solutions of cobalt nitrate or cobalt acetate followed by reduction in hydrogen. XPS was mainly used to investigate the phase of cobalt on MWCNTs after reduction with $H_2$ flow at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Higher cobalt-nanoparticle dispersion was found in the MWCNTS prepared via cobalt nitrate decomposition. A typical XPS spectrum of Co 2p showed the peaks at binding energy (BE) values equal to 781 and 797 eV, respectively. It is found that cobalt nitrate supported MWCNTs is more dispersive and have catalytic activity than that of cobalt acetate supported MWCNTs at same preparation condition such as concentration of precursor solution and reduction environment.

Photoacoustic Spectroscopic Study on Cobalt Incorporation onto the Surface of Mesoporous Molecular Sieves

  • The incorporation of cobalt into mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and MCM-48 was carried out. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were prepared using Co(II) acetate solution adjusted to pH = 3.0 with phosphoric acid by the incipient wetness method. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) was used to study the local environments of Co(II) incorporated into mesopores. The band around 500 nm in PAS of as-prepared Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 with Co(II) acetate solution was changed to triplet bands around 600 nm. This could be assigned to the 4 A2(F)-> 4T1(P) transition of Co(II) surrounded tetrahedrally by oxygen ions after calcination. It may be attributable to that the octahedral cobalt species containing phosphate ligands in coordination sphere reacting with framework's silanol groups to be dispersed atomically onto the surface of mesoporous molecular sieves as a tetrahedral species. This is unlike that the Co in Co-Cl/MCM41 and direct-synthesized Co-MCM41 transforms to Co oxide phase upon calcination. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were stable while treated with water.

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Five- and Six-Coordinate Cobalt(Ⅱ) Complexes of Tripodal Liand. Tris-(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)amine

  • The various cobalt(Ⅱ) complexes were synthesized and characterized using tris-(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)amine (ntb) as a ligand where the ntb plays as a tripodal tetradentate ligand to form complexes with a trigonal pyramidal geometry. The complexes have 5 and 6 coordinate cobalt(Ⅱ) ions depending on the additional ligand used. In each complex the additional ligand, chloride anion, or acetate anion occupies the "open" site trans to the apical tertiary nitrogen atom of ntb ligand. Complex 1, [Co(Ⅱ)(ntb)Cl]Cl has a trigonal bipyramidal geometry. This geometry was easily constructed using ntb as a tetradentate ligand and chloride as a monodentate ligand. The complex is isostructural to the corresponding manganese(Ⅱ) complex. Crystal data are as follows: [Co(Ⅱ)(ntb)Cl]Cl·MeOH, 1. triclinic space group P1; a=13.524(2) Å, b=14.037(2) Å, c=17.275(1) Å; α=78.798(9), β=84.159(8)°, γ=65.504(9)°; V=2929.6(6) Å3; Z=4; R1=0.0715, wR2=0.1461 for reflections of I > 2σ(I). Six coordinate complex 2 [Co(ntb)(OAc)](OAc) was synthesized using ntb as a tetradentate ligand and acetate as a bidentate chelating ligand.

Gas Phase Oxidation of Toluene and Ethyl Acetate over Proton and Cobalt Exchanged ZSM-5 Nano Catalysts- Experimental Study and ANN Modeling

  • Activities of nanostructure HZSM-5 and Co-ZSM-5 catalysts (with different Co-loading) for catalytic conversion of ethyl acetate and toluene were studied. The catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation method and were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and ICP-AES techniques. Catalytic studies were carried out inside a U-shaped fixed bed reactor under atmospheric pressure and different temperatures. Toluene showed lower reactivity than ethyl acetate for conversion on Co-ZSM-5 catalysts. The effect of Co loading on conversion was prominent at temperatures below $400^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$ for ethyl acetate and toluene respectively. In a binary mixture of organic compounds, toluene and ethyl acetate showed an inhibition and promotional behaviors respectively, in which the conversion of toluene was decreased at temperatures above $350^{\circ}C$. Inhibition effect of water vapor was negligible at temperatures above $400^{\circ}C$. An artificial neural networks model was developed to predict the conversion efficiency of ethyl acetate on Co-ZSM-5 catalysts based on experimental data. Predicted results showed a good agreement with experimental results. ANN modeling predicted the order of studied variable effects on ethyl acetate conversion, which was as follows: reaction temperature (50%) > ethyl acetate inlet concentration (25.085%) > content of Co loading (24.915%).

  • $LiCoO_2$ powder was synthesized by Sol-Gel method using inorganic materials. The starting materials, $CH_3COOLi^*2H_2O\;and\;Co(CH_3COO)_2{^*}4H_2O$, were mixed in the atomic ratio Li/Co of 1 and dissolved in i-propanol with acetic acid. The solution was dried for gelation, and finally obtained the pre-powder. The pre-powder were studied by thermal analysis. Based on the TGA result, heat treatment was performed at various temperature(500 to $800^{\circ}C$) for 2h in air atmosphere. The crystal structure, morphology, electrochemical property were carried out using XRD, SEM, cyclic voltammetry(CV).

Spectrophotometric determination of Cobalt by means of Co-EDTA butyl ester Complex (Ethylenediamine Tetrabutylacetate (EDTA butyl ester)에 依한 Co의 吸光光度分析)

  • A new method of cobalt determination has been developed by employing ethylenediamine tetrabutyl acetate(EDTA-butyl ester) synthesized from EDTA and Butyl alcohol. The synthesized EDTA ester dissolved in butyl alcohol extracts various metal ions from aqueous solutions. Cobaltous ion extracted into organic phase containing EDTA ester to form Co (II)-EDTA butyl ester complex is back extracted into alkaline aqueous phase forming a stable pink colored complex of Co (III). The optimum condition for spectrophotometric determination of cobalt via the new complex has been established. The absorption peak occurs at 540$m{\mu}$ and Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range of 0∼50 ${\mu}g/ml$ of cobalt.
