  • Dry ice snow jet was produced by high-pressure expansion of liquid carbon dioxide and subsequent acceleration by carrier gas flow. Removal mechanism for coating was not so different from that for contaminating particles on the surface. The removal of coating was quantitatively described by Hutchings' equation. The two parameters obtained from the plot, were used to predict the removal rate or the specific coating area removed by a unit mass of carbon dioxide. Their values also enhanced the reliability of the experimental data and enabled the experimental errors corrected. Hutchings' plots obtained with various values of either stand-off distance or nozzle length tends to meet apparently at a single unique point at which the scar-size enlargement by focusing jet plume was balanced with that by spreading it.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) provides high electrical conductivity and transparency in the visible and near IR (infrared) wavelengths. Thus, it is widely used as a transparent electrode for the fabrication of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light emitting diode displays (OLRDs), photovoltaic devices, and other optical applications. Lasers have been used for removing coating on polymer substrate for flexible display and electronic industry. In selective removal of ITO layer, laser wavelength, pulse energy, scan speed, and the repetition rate of pulses determine conditions, which are efficient for removal of ITO coating without affecting properties of the polymer substrate. ITO coating removal with a laser is more environmentally friendly than other conventional etching methods. In this paper, pattering of ITO film from polymer substrates is described. The Yb:KGW femtosecond laser processing system with a pulse duration of 250fs, a wavelength of 1030nm and a repetition rate of 100kHz was used for removing ITO coating in air. We can remove the ITO coating using a scanner system with various pulse energies and scan speeds. We observed that the amount of debris is minimal through an optical and a confocal microscope, and femtosecond laser pulses with 1030nm wavelength are effective to remove ITO coating without the polymer substrate ablation.

  • The characteristics of wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) are governed by many factors such as the power supply type, operating condition and electrode material. This work deals with the effect of wire electrode materials on the machining characteristics such as, metal removal rate, surface characteristics and surface roughness during WEDM A wire's thermal physical properties are melting point, electrical conductivity and vapor pressure. One of the desired qualities of wire is a low melting point and high vapor pressure to help expel the contaminants from the gap. They are determined by the mix of alloying elements (in the case of plain brass and coated wire) or the base core material(i.e. molybdenum). Experiments have been conducted regarding the choice of suitable wire electrode materials and influence of the properties of these materials on the machinability and surface characteristics in WEDM, the experimental results are presented and discussed from their metallurgical aspect. And the coating effect of various alloying elements(Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, Cr, Mn, etc.) to the Cu or 65-35 brass core on them was reviewed also. The removal rate of some coated wires are higher than that of 65-35 brass electrode wire because the wire is difficult to break due to the wire cooling effect of Zn evaporation latent heat and the Zn oxide on the surface is effective in preventing short circuit. The removal rate increases with increasing Zn content from 35, 40 and Zn coated wire

  • Recovery of valuable metals in the industrial wastewater and sludge has attracted an attention owing to limited metallic resources in the earth. In this study, we firstly fabricated Ti/Ir-Ru electrodes by spin coating technique for effective recovery of Cu in electrowinning process. Two different Ti/Ir-Ru electrodes were fabricated using 100 and 500 mM of precursors (i.e., Ir-Ru). SEM-EDX and AFM revealed that Ir and Ru were homogenously distributed on the surface of Ti plate by the spin coating, in particular the electrode prepared by 500 mM showed distinct boundary line between Ir-Ru layer and Ti substrate. XRD, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry also revealed that characteristics of IrO2, RuO2, and TiO2 and its electrocatalytic property increased as the concentration of coating precursor increased. Finally, we carried out Cu recovery experiments using two Ti/Ir-Ru as anodes in electrowinning process, showing that both anodes showed a complete removal of Cu (1 and 10 g/L) within 6 h reaction, but much higher kinetic rate constant was obtained by the anode prepared by 500 mM. The findings in this study can provide a fundamental knowledge for surface characteristics of Ti/Ir-Ru electrode prepared by spin coating method and its potential feasibility for effective electrowinning process.

  • Phosphorus is one of the limiting nutrients for the growth of phytoplankton and algae and is therefore one of leading causes of eutrophication. Most phosphorous in water is present in the form of phosphates. Different technologies have been applied for phosphate removal from wastewater, such as physical, chemical precipitation by using ferric, calcium or aluminum salts, biological, and adsorption. Adsorption is one of efficient method to remove phosphates in wastewater. To find the optimal media for phosphate removal, physical characteristics of media was analysed, and the phosphate removal efficiency of media (silica sand, slag, zeolite, activated carbon) was also investigated in this study. Silica sand showed highest relative density and wear rate, and phosphate removal efficiency. Silica sand removed about 36% of phosphate. To improve the phosphate removal efficiency of silica sand, Fe coating was conducted. Fe coated silica sand showed 3 times higher removal efficiency than non-coated one.

  • TiO2 membranes for microfiltration were prepared on $\alpha$-alumina support tube by slurry coating. The coating layer was obtained by flowing TiO2 slip on the inner surface of the alumina support. TiO2 membranes were heat-treated at 9$25^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The thickness of the unsupported membrane was about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The mean pore diameter of the membranes were 0.09 and 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively and the pure water flux was 900~1,200ι/m2.hr at room temperature and 1 bar. For a possible application of oily wastewater treatement an kerosene/wa-ter emulsion was separated in terms of flux and removal efficiency. In 60 min of operating time the flux of TiO2 membranes was 50~100 ι/m2.hr and removal efficiency was over 97% at 3kgf/cm2 of operating pres-sure and 600 ml/min of flow rate. TiO2 membranes could be recycled by reheat treatments at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs.

  • The study on a surface transformation hardening of a rod-shaped SM45C carbon steel is carried out by using CW Nd:YAG laser. Conventionally, $CO_2$ laser has been usually used as a laser source for a transformation hardening. however, it is needed to an additional absorbent coating like a colloidal graphite owing to a lower absorbtion rate. On the other hand, no cost and post-removal process of coating is required to Nd:YAG laser, due to a higher absorbtion rate relatively. Moreover, there is a merit which is capable of building up the more flexible processing system resulted from a beam delivery through a optical fiber. In this study, we were going to recognize characteristics of a transformation hardening using a optic head with a gaussian beam distribution.

  • Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) has become an essential step in the overall semiconductor wafer fabrication technology. In general, CMP is a surface planarization method in which a silicon wafer is rotated against a polishing pad in the presence of slurry under pressure. The polishing pad, generally a polyurethane-based material, consists of polymeric foam cell walls, which aid in removal of the reaction products at the wafer interface. It has been found that the material removal rate of any polishing pad decreases due to the so-called 'pad glazing' after several wafer lots have been processed. Therefore, the pad restoration and conditioning has become essential in CMP processes to keep the urethane polishing pad at the proper friction coefficient and to allow effective slurry transport to the wafer surface. Diamond pad conditioner employs a single layer of brazed bonded diamond crystals. Due to the corrosive nature of the polishing slurry required in low pH metal CMP such as copper, it is essential to minimize the possibility of chemical interaction between very low pH slurry (pH <2) and the bond alloy. In this paper, we report an exceptional protective coated conditioner for in-situ pad conditioning in low pH Cu CMP process. The protective Cr-coated conditioner has been tested in slurry with pH levels as low as 1.5 without bond degradation.

  • The effects of zinc coating and heat treatment on the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys including A1100 and the modified A3003, used as heat exchanger tube were investigated in this study. The grain size of the heat-treated specimen is larger than that of the specimen without heat treatment, but the grain size did not significantly affect the corrosion behavior. The concentration of zinc was noted at 11.3 ~ 31.4 at.% for the as-received Zn-coated samples and reduced to 1.2 ~ 2.4 at.% after the heat treatment, as measured by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) on the surface. The concentration of oxygen is 22 ~ 46 at.% for the zinc coated specimens while noted at 7.4 ~ 12.8 at.% for the specimens after the removal of the coating. The corrosion behavior depended largely on the concentrations of zinc, aluminum, and oxygen on the specimen surface, but not on the Mo content. The corrosion potential was high and the corrosion rate was low for a specimen with a low zinc content, a high aluminum content, and a high oxygen content.
