Treatment for water repellency on the carbon supports of GDL which composed a part of MEA has been suggested as a solution to prevent flooding. PTFE is a fluoropolymer that has hydrophobic property and a PTFE emulsion was selected as waterproof agent in this investigation. Carbon paper was coated by PTFE emulsion with different particle size of 5~500 nm and 3~$5\;{\mu}m$ as various concentration. PTFE coated carbon paper has difference in weight variation changed proportionally at PTFE concentration and coating times. Then gas permeability of the coated carbon paper with emulsion of 3~$5\;{\mu}m$ PTFE was changed vastly. Characteristics of carbon paper coated with different PTFE emulsion were analyzed by FE-SEM, FT-IR spcetroscopy and were evaluated by weight variations, gas permeability and water contact angle.

It is essential to use base papers having proper surface characteristics in coating operation for improving coated paper quality and coater runnability. To fulfill these purposes, surface sizing of coating base stock with oxidized starch is commonly practiced. Use of cationic starch for surface sizing improves coated paper quality since cationic starch penetrates less into paper structure. The immediate objective of this study was to examine the influence of surface sizing with starch solutions containing cationic polymers on the rheology of coating colors and the effect on physical properties of coated papers. Changes of rheological characteristics of coating colors placed on the plastic substrate surface sized with cationic and anionic starch were determined. Results of rheological test showed that cationic polymer surface sizing agent increased electrostatic interaction with coating colors and increased storage modulus. This new technology of using cationic polymer as surface sizing additive was considered to be advantageous for base papers at low basis weights since it would improve the coverage and optical properties of coated papers.

The local surface strength variation of coated papers were measured at various speeds on a number of coated paper samples to study the effects of speed and ink tack on coating pick. Coating pick phenomenon is observed in an ink transfer variation curve as a decrease in the slope of the curve. On the other hand, it causes an actual decrease in net ink transfer to paper with an increase in speed. The effect of speed on coating pick depends on ink tack, ink film thickness and surface properties of coating layer formation of paper. A novel device to measure the surface strength can rate the coating paper in a different order. Comparison are made between dry test of coating paper pick and wet coating pick test of printing in IGT printability tester. Coating formulation is the main key to prevent from coating pick. The binder level increases, the coating pick and the slop decrease. The piling on blanket in printing is a problem when the coating pick is occur on a local area rather than average surface strength of coated papers.

When coated paperboard is printed, pressed into a groove with a creasing rule and folded, white line cracking occurs along the crease due to intensive mechanical pressure. The cracking will deteriorates product quality and waste resources. Effects of creasing pressure and ink dosage on the foldability of coated board were investigated. It was shown that applying an optimum pressure is important during creasing. When the pressure was too low, the crease formed was not sufficiently deep enough to enable precise folding. When an excess pressure was applied, fiber bonding was destroyed, resulted in unsatisfactory cracking. When the coated board was folded in machine direction (MD), long cracks were formed along MD. When it folded in cross direction (CD), the cracks were shorter and formed perpendicular to CD. Printing promoted cracking due to the decrease in flexibility of coated board. In addition, uneven ink film layer on the coating layer caused worse cracking.
Poly(lactide) (PLA)-coated paperboards were prepared by solution coating and thermo-compression coating methods and their effect of coating on the packaging properties such as tensile, water resistance, water vapor barrier, and heat sealing properties was tested. Compared with uncoated control paperboard, tensile strength (TS) of PLA-coated paperboard increased profoundly (2.2-2.6 folds) with slight increase in elongation at break (E). Water absorptiveness (WA) of the paperboard decreased 74-170 folds and water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased 6.3-22.1 folds by coating with PLA, which indicates an increase in the hydrophobicity of the surface of paperboard. Compared with polyethylene (PE)-coated paperboard, both PLA-coated paperboard exhibited 2.3 time higher heat sealing strength. In addition, the PLA-coated paperboards showed equal or higher wet TS than PE-coated paperboard. All the test results showed that the paperboard coated by the thermo-compression coating method was similar to or better than those of coated by the solution coating method.

This paper confirms that high solid coating can increase coating speed and reduce drying cost. Low solid coating color with the synthetic thickener and high solid coating color with the rheology modifier and with higher ratio of GCC were prepared. Coated paper was then produced with an industrial coater, varying coating speed and dryer temperature in order to keep the moisture content of the coated paper constant. Coating color concentration was able to be increased from 66% to 69% and from 68% to 71% without an adverse effect on coating color rheology. With a help of the rheology modifier, the increased ratio of GCC in high solid coating did not show harmful effects on the coated paper quality.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the type of base papers containing Sw-BDP, HW-BDP and Bamboo-BKP on the properties and printabilities of coated papers. Also it was intended to evaluate the effect of coated paper prepared with anionic and amphoteric latex based coating color. The results obtained from this study were as follows. The fiber length of Bamboo-BKP was observed longer than that of the Hw-BKP and shorter than that of the Sw-BKP. This has effect on physical properties. Therfore the results of mea-suring physical properties were higher ratio of Sw-BKP physical properties tended to be slightly higher with the increase I the mixing ratio. Considering the optical properties of base papers the highest opacity was obtained in case of the Hw-BKP and the second appeared Bamboo-BKP. On the other hand smoothness roughness and air permeability of Bamboo-BKP were lower than those of wood pulp and the optical properties of coated papers tended to show the similar with those of base papers. The ink receptivity and print gloss of the coated papers for Bamboo-BKP were lower than those of wood pulp. As the mixing ratio of Sw-BKP was increased the properties and printabilities were improved slightly. Meanwhile amphoteric latex was improved the optical properties and printability of coated papers.

We studied the green synthesis and antibacterial activity of paper coated with chitosan-silver (Ag) green nanocomposites for packaging applications. Green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) was achieved by a chemical reaction involving a mixture of chitosan-silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) in an autoclave at 15 psi, $121^{\circ}C$, for 30 min. AgNPs and their formation in chitosan was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). As-prepared chitosan-AgNPs composite materials were coated on manila paper using Meyer rod. Surface morphology and Ag contents in coating layer were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation were significantly affected by coating with chitosan-AgNPs. The antibacterial test of coated paper was performed qualitatively and quantitatively against Escherichia coli (E. coli). It was shown to be effective in suppressing the growth of E. coli with increasing Ag contents on the surface of coated paper and more than 95 R (%) of antimicrobial rate was obtained at chitosan-AgNPs coated papers.

Print mottle is the spotty and cloudy appearance of the ink on the substrate. Print mottle is influenced significantly by the characteristics of the paper with regard to homogeneity of its structure and its coating. The print mottle can be counteracted, in particular by altering the absorption characteristics of the inks, by changing sequence in which the inks are printed, or by using a advanced coated paper. In this study, we investigated the effect of ink dispersion to the print mottle through trial printing test and also analyzed the correlation between properties of coated paper and subjective results by statistic method. The result of this study is expected to be applied the basic data to solve the problem of printing mottle.

Talc has been used as coating pigments for gravure printing paper and light weight coated paper (LWC) in Europe for 30 years and the use of talc has been significantly increased every year. Currently, talc is used for about 15% of pigments for paper coating. Especially more than 50% of the coating pigments for gravure printing paper and web printing paper (web off-set) is applying talc. The use of talc improves printability, smoothness, and the coverage of base paper, and showed a significant effect on reducing the coated paper basis weight. In addition, it improves compressibility of the coating layer, influencing the gravure printability.
