  • This study was carried out in order to elucidate effects of types of binder used in pre-coated layer on optical properties and printability of top-coated layer. Coated papers with four different types of SB latex were prepared. Tg, particle size and gel contents of latices were of different. Optical properties and printability of coated paper including print mottle were evaluated. It was confirmed that properties of pre-coated layer distinctively affected final properties of top-coated layer. Tg was found to be the most influencing factor on the print mottle of coated paper: the SB latex with lower Tg and higher particle size resulted in a superior print mottle. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top-coated layer can be controlled by adjusting pre-coated layer.

  • This paper was intended to find out the relationship between optical and interior properties of coated paper and printability with the variation of particle size of ground calcium carbonate(GCC) by using Mercury Porosimeter, and to find out the pore properties of coated paper as well. The viscosity and water retention of coating color was increased and smothness, sheet gloss and porosity of coated paper were improved as the particle size of GCC was decreased. However, there was no difference in opacity and brightness of coated paper. The pore volume of coated paper was decreased, but the number of pores was drastically increased according to the decrease of the particle size of GCC. The weight of ink transferred into coated paper was increased in proportion to pore volume of coated paper. However, the weight of damping water and ink induced toward coated paper was slightly increased. Ink setting was accelerated printing gloss was not changed. Therefore, optical and interior properties of coated paper seemed to be affected by the pore property of coated paper and printability was also affected by it.

  • This study was performed to identify the effect of calendering variables on the properties of coated paper such as sheet gloss, surface roughness, opacity, etc. The effect of calendering variables including the number of nips, pressure, machine speed and moisture content on the properties of coated paper was investigated. The calender was installed with two steel rolls and one cotton-made roll. With this calender, the coated sheets were passed through the calender from 1 to 4 times, applying the linear pressure on calender rolls, 5 through 100kg/cm and operating the machine speed 3 to 12m/min. Also, the moisture content of coated sheet was varied about 5 and 10%. It was found that sheet gloss and surface roughness of coated paper was increased with increasing the number of passing nips, linear roll pressure and the moisture content of coated paper. But it was shown that the opacity and brightness of coated paper were decreased under the above conditions due to the blackening. It was also suggested that the soft nip possibly increased the thermoplasticity of coating layer with the heat of steel roll, resulting in the reinforcement of surface properties positively. The sheet gloss and surface roughness of coated paper could be improved by the longer dwell time over the rolls.

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of pre-coating layer on top-coating layer. The coated paper with five different formulations were prepared. The properties of coated paper were measured and correlation between pre and top-coated layer was evaluated. Paper gloss was increased with addition of clay and GCC that has smaller particle size. Roughness was decreased with using smaller particle GCC, clay and talc. The highest thickness was obtained with talc. Brightness and whiteness of pre-coated layer were affected to top-coated layer. GCC 60 shows the highest and ununiform water adsorption during 1sec. The adsorption was higher with increasing coated weight. Talc shows the excellent water adsorption properties due to its wettability. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top coating layer can be controlled with adjusting pre-coating layer.

  • This study was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of coated weight and calender pressure on conductivity of printed RFID tags. The printed RFID tags have been manufactured with gravure printing and it has been well known that the efficiency of printed RFID tags is influenced by surface properties of substrate. In this study, coated paper was prepared with four different coated weight and three different calender pressure. After printing conductivity ink on coated paper, surface resistance was measured to evaluate the efficiency of the printed RFID tag. It was found that, with increasing of coated weight and calender pressure, the paper gloss, smoothness, brightness and gravure printability were improved while the surface resistance of the printed RFID tag was decreased.

  • The coated paper was greatly affected by the basic physical properties of the binder as well as the amount of the coating formula. High glass transition temperature (Tg) of the styrene-butadiene (SB) latex, selected as the binder in our study, gave the high stiffness to the coated paper, but lowered the binding force and print gloss. The average particle size of the SB latex also greatly affected to the coated paper so that the smaller particle size improved the rheological property of the coating formula and increased the binding force and print gloss. Another property of the SBR latex, gel content, was important because when its value was small, the latex was easily deformed at the high temperature and increased air permeability to the coated paper. Therefore, the lower gel content consequently resulted in the higher blistering resistance, especially in the web paper. The larger portion of the SB latex in the coated formula improved the binding force and print gloss, but decreased the ink set-off and ink-trapping to the coated paper. The heavier coating improved optical properties such as opacity, paper gloss and paper smoothness, to the coated paper.

  • It is essential to use base papers having proper surface characteristics in coating operation for improving coated paper quality and coater runnability. To fulfill these purposes surface sizing of coating base stock with anionic oxidized starch is commonly practiced. It is suggested that use of cationic starch for surface sizing rather than conventional oxidized starch will improve coated paper quality since cationic starch penetrates less into paper structure because of its strong electrostatic interaction with anionically charged paper surface. Strong interaction of cationic surface sizing starch with anionic coating color is expected to promote rapid immobilization of the coating color and improve coating holdout and optical property. The immediate objective of this study was to examine the influence of surface sizing starches on the properties of coated papers. Structural characteristics of the coatings formed on the substrate surface sized with cationic and anionic starches were examined. To enhance the efficiency of cationic surface sizing starch on coated paper properties, strongly charged cationic polymers were added to the surface sizing starch and its effect on coated paper properties was evaluated. Results showed that opacity and light scattering coefficient of coated paper were higher when base paper surface sized with cationic starch was used. Addition of less than 1% of cationic poly-DADMAC to the cationic surface sizing starch improved the opacity of coated paper significantly.

  • This research was intended to evaluate the effect of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) on the coating structure and surface strength of coated paper prepared with amphoteric latex based coating color. Printability and optical properties of coated papers were compared. The influence of the consolidation behavior of coating color on the coating structure and the surface strength of coated paper was investigated. Compared with the conventional anionic latex, amphoteric latex formed bulkyer, smoother and more porous coating layer, which in turn, restricted binder migration in the coating layers, and facilitated immobilization of coating colors. However, dry pick strength of coated paper was decreased. The addition of CMC to these systems had strongly influenced on. the consolidation behavior and porosity in the dry state, through forming the network structure of coating layers by the interaction with amphoteric latex particles. Thus, printability and optical properties of coated papers were improved. Results indicated that amphoteric latex could be practically applied to the paper coating to improve printability and optical properties of coated papers.

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate effects of pigment mixed with different ratio on the double coated paper. Mineral pigments such as clay and ground calcium carbonate(GCC) as well as hollow sphere plastic pigment were used to evaluate the physical, optical properties and printabilities of double coated paper. The physical properties such as gloss and smoothness, and the printability(ink gloss) of double coated paper were measured to evaluate the effects of the bottom layer on improving the properties of top layer. The data indicated that the usage of hollow sphere plastic pigment for the bottom layer coating improved the surface properties of double coated paper, and that ink gloss was significantly influenced by the structure of bottom layer even when hollow sphere plastic pigment was used for the bottom layer coating.

  • High loading of base paper is regarded as one of reasons to aggravate fold cracking of coated paper. But the relationship between the ash content of base paper and fold cracking of coated paper has not been shown yet. We investigated the effect of ash content in base paper on the fold cracking of coated paper. Handsheets with three different ash contents (19.5-23.5%) were prepared, and double layered coating were applied on the top side of the handsheets. A gravimetric water retention meter (AA-GWR) was employed to fold the paper with a uniform pressure after solid printing on the coated surface. The fold cracking was digitized by calculating the cracked area by means of an image analysis technique. Results suggested that high ash content in the base paper increased the fold cracking of the outer surface of coated papers. In the case of inner surface greater fold crack areas were obtained, and the number of cracks decreased because long and wide cracks were formed. Reduction in tensile strength and thickness appeared to give greater fold cracking for highly loaded papers.
