A study on the influence of the China Coastal Waters nearby Jeju Island Using Satellite Data (위성 자료를 이용한 제주도 주변해역의 중국대륙연안수 영향에 관한 연구)

  • China Coastal Waters (CCW) usually appears in the seas surrounding Jeju Island annually(June to October) and is very pronounced in August. Generally, low-salinity water appears to the western seas of Jeiu Island from June through October and gradually propagates to the eastern seas, where CCW meets the Tsushima Current. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of SLAs and SSTs indicated that the valiance in SLAs and SSTs was 95.05%(the first mode to third mode) and 98.09%(the first mode), respectively The PSD of the western waters for the first mode of EOF analysis of SLAs was stronger than that of the eastern waters because of the influence of CCW. The PSD for the EOF analysis of SSTs was similar in all areas (the Yangtze Estuary and the seas to the west and east of Jeju Island), with a period of approximately 260 days.

  • Ecological and taxonomical studies on the copepods were reviewed in order to dake data bases on the species composition, abundance, distributional pattern, and seasonal variations of copepods in the South Sea of Korea. Total 179 species have been reported in this area. The dominant species in the coastal waters and embayments, such as Acartia clausi, Paracalanus parvus, Oithona similis, and Oithona nana, were different from those reported in the offshore waters around Cheju Island. Indicator species of the South Sea were also discussed in this paper. Copepod abundances were higher in the coastal waters, up to more than 390,000 individuals/$m^3$(collected with a $150{\mu}m$ mesh net), than in the offshore waters. There were two types of temporal variations in copepod abundances in the coastal waters, i.e., bimodal abundance peaks in spring and fall, md unimodal peak during summer to early fall.

A Study on Fluoride Contents in Surface and Ground Waters in Korea. (지표수 및 지하수중 불소 함량에 관한 연구)

  • A study was performed to find out the fluoride contents in surface and ground waters from June, 1973 to July, 1974. Water samples were collected from 53 surface and ground water sources. The results are as follows: 1. Out of 53 samples, the ground water of Hwaengsung had the highest fluoride contents (1.6 mg/l) and 13 samples did not. have fluoride at all. 2. The waters from Yoju (ground), Chongnung (ground) Hwaengsung (ground) and Namyang (ground) had optimum fluoride level (0.6~1.7mg/l) for the prevention of dental caries. 3. The ground waters had more fluoride contents than surface waters and the waters of coastal areas had less fluoride contents than those of inland. 4. The waters of Kangwon province had the most fluoride contents (mean 0.57mg/l) and the waters of Cheju do had the least fluoride contents (mean 0.06 mg/l)

A Study on Thecate Dinoflagellates in the Neritic Ecosystems of Korea

  • Dinoflagellates were investigated from the coastal waters of Korea. The total 100 thecate dinoflagellates taxa, comprising of 93 species five varieties and two forms were identified, which were attributed to four orders nine families, 13 genera in Korean coastal waters. 22 species, two varieties and two forms were new to Korean waters. Ceratium arcticum, C. longirostrum, C. praelongum, C. tripos var. ponticum, Gonyaulax jollifei, G. pavillardii, Protoperidinium cassum cassum, P. conicum f. asamushi, P. depressum var. parallelum, P. elegans f. granulatum, P. globifera, P. incognitum, P. majus, P. mite, P. obtusum, P. pallidum daedalum, P. parvum, P. perplexum, P. pyriforme pyriforme, P. pyrum, P. sphaeroides, P. subsphericum, P. valgus, P. venustum, Diplopsalopsis orbicularis, Gotoius abei were new record species for Korea.

  • China Coastal Water (CCW) usually appears in the seas surrounding Jeju Island annually (June?October) and is very pronounced in August. The power spectrum density (PSD), sea level anomalies (SLAs), and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were found to peak annually and semiannually. The peaks at intervals of 80-, 60-, and 43-days are considered to be influenced by CCW and the Kuroshio Current. Generally, low-salinity water appears to the west of Jeju Island from June through October and gradually propagates to the east, where CCW meets the Tsushima Current. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of SLAs and SSTs indicated that the variance in SLAs and SSTs was 55.70 and 98.09% in the first mode, respectively. The PSD for the first mode of EOF analysis of SLAs was stronger in the western than in the eastern waters because of the influence of CCW. The PSD for the EOF analysis of SSTs was similar in all areas (the Yangtze Estuary and the waters to the west and east of Jeju Island), with a period of approximately 260 days.

Two New Records of the Penaeid Shrimps(Crustacea: Decapoda) from Korean Waters

  • Fourteen species of the family Penaeidae have been previously reported from the Korean waters (Kim, 1977: Cha et al., 2001). Recent collections from the coastal waters of Korea revealed the presence of two penaeid species, Metapenaeopsis lata Kubo, 1949 and Parapenaeopsis cultrirostris Alcock, 1906. These two species have been reported from Japan, East China Sea and Sou China Sea, and the Indo-West Pacific low South China Sea. We present brief notes of these species as two new members of the Korean fauna. (omitted)

A study on underwater optical wireless communication link capability in the Bay of Bengal

  • The paper presents a numerical underwater channel model developed in MATLAB for estimating the optical link budget between a light emitting diode (LED) based optical transmitter and a photo diode (PD) receiver when operated in the harbor, coastal and deep waters locations in the Bay of Bengal. The water samples are collected at different locations in the Bay of Bengal using a water sampler during an offshore research cruise. The optical attenuation, the main inherent parameter determining the range of the optical communication link is identified for the different waters using an underwater irradiance measurement system in the laboratory. The identified parameters are applied to the numerical model and found that a 10 W LED and a photo diode based system can provide the optical budget required for a horizontal underwater communication range of about 0.5, 14 and 35 m in the harbor, coastal and deep waters locations respectively. By increasing the transmitter power to 50 W, the operating range of the communication link could be increased up to 53 m in deep water locations in the Bay of Bengal.

Fish Fauna in Coastal Waters of Ulleungdo, Korea by SCUBA Investigation in Summer (다이빙 조사에 의한 여름철 울릉도 연안의 어류상)

  • The fish fauna was investigated in the coastal waters of Ulleungdo by SCUBA diving from 27 to 28 July 2004. We observed a total of 45 species from 22 families, including 6 species in Scorpaenidae and 5 species in Labridae. A total of 33 species were recorded at Station 1, and 15 species were recorded at Station 3. As a result of this study, we newly added 23 species to fish list in the coastal waters of Ulleungdo.

A study on the fine structure of marine diatoms in Korean coastal waters: Genus Thalassiosira 5

  • Thalassiosira species were collected from October 2007 to January 2009 in an attempt to better understand species diversity of the genus Thalassiosira in Korean coastal waters. A total of 5 Thalassiosira species (T. concaviuscula, T. oceanica, T. partheneia, T. simonsenii and T. nanolineata) were identified here. Most species in this study were of small size, and 5 species were recorded for the first time in Korean coastal waters. Using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we described distinctive characteristics of fine structure that proved to be important diagnostic characteristics for the identification of each species. The most important diagnostic characteristics for Thalassiosira species identification were the marginal strutted processes, the position of labiate processes, and the areolation. The differential characteristics of the species studied were: T. concaviuscula has a double layered external tubes on the marginal strutted processes; T. oceanica shows marginal ridges that are interlinked between the marginal strutted processes; the valve face of T. partheneia is fairly convex and its labiate process is positioned midway between two strutted processes; T. simonsenii is characterized by two labiate processes and somewhat coarse areolae; and, T. nanolineata has several central strutted processes and linear areolation.

Dynamics of the Phytoplankton Community in the Coastal Waters of Chuksan Harbor, East Sea (동해 축산항 연안의 식물플랑크톤 군집 동태)

  • In order to investigate the distribution of phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Chuksan Harbor, East Sea, the abundance and biomass of phytoplankton have been evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2000 to October 2002. A total of 363 different phytoplankton species was observed and most of them were composed of diatoms. The mean abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton during the study period ranged from 56 ${\times}$ $10^3$ to 720 ${\times}$ $10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ and from 0.78 to 3.29 μg chl-a $L^{-1}$, respectively. The relative contribution of the size-fractionated phytoplankton to phytoplankton community showed difference according to seasons. The average contribution of nano-phytoplankton(<20 $\mu$m) was over 50% in the total abundance and biomass of the phytoplankton. Our results show that nano-phytoplankton play an important role in the southern coastal waters of the East Sea. And the environmental factors such as suspended substances, phosphates and silicates were positively correlated with the abundances and biomass of phytoplankton.
