Atmospheric correction over the ocean part is more important than that over the land because the signal from the ocean is very small about one tenth of that reflected from land. In this study, the Spectral Shape Matching Method (SSMM) developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2004) is evaluated using Landsat imagery acquired over the highly turbid Saemangeum Coastal Area. The result of SSMM is compared with COST model developed by Chavez (1991 and 1997). In principle, SSMM is simple and easy to implement on any satellite imagery, relying on both field and image properties. To assess the potential use of these methods, several field campaigns were conducted in the Saemangeum coastal area corresponding with Landsat-7 satellite's overpass on 29 May 2005. In-situ data collected from the coastal waters of Saemangeum using optical instruments (ASD field spectroradiometer) consists of ChI, Ap, SS, aooM, F(d). In order to perform SSMM, we use the in-situ water-leaving radiance spectra from clear oceanic waters to estimate the the path radiance from total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), due to the reason that the shape of clear water-leaving radiance spectra is nearly stable than turbid water-leaving radiance spectra. The retrieved water-leaving radiance after subtraction of path signal from TOA signal in this way is compared with that estimated by COST model. The result shows that SSMM enabled retrieval of water-leaving radiance spectra that are consistent with in-situ data obtained from Saemangeum coastal waters. The COST model yielded significantly high errors in these areas.
Anchovy spawn from the end of May to mid-October, when the water temperature is $14.8-27.2\;^{\circ}C$ and the salinity is 26.0-33.6 psu. The main spawning season is between July to August, when the water temperature is $21.7-27.2\;^{\circ}C$ and the salinity is between 26.0-32.2 psu. The main spawning grounds of anchovy are coastal areas shallower than 50 m around the islands located in the Jeju Strait. Anchovy larvae are distributed near the fronts between Chuja-do, Jangsu-do, Yeoseo-do, and the open sea rather than in the spawning grounds. Anchovy eggs and larvae density increased in accordance with the high level of $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ during the summer season (July-August). In terms of the suspended sediment (SS) levels along the northern coast of the Jeju Strait, high densities of anchovy eggs (12.0-18.0 mg/L) were observed, mainly in the area affected by the coastal waters of the southern sea with high SS levels, while larvae (10.0-19.0 mg/L) tended to be distributed over a wide area with high SS levels, including the open sea. In terms of the dissolved oxygen (DO) content, eggs (5.4-6.8 mg/L) were observed in coastal areas with a high DO content, while larvae (4.2-6.4 mg/L) were distributed widely in areas with a relatively low DO content, from the southern coast to the open sea.
This study aims to explore a set of indicators to be used for purification management. by estimating the total quantity of depositied waste in coastal waters, Through 3 rounds of Delphi technique, this study sorts out the following 5 variables to be used as major indicators determining priorities for purification in coastal areas: the ratio of re-deposition after collection, the area where fishing gear are lost, the total quantity of depositied waste of each coastal water, the total quantity of deposited waste in the past, and the quantity of depositied waste by unit area. Although the fact that the delphi surveys were done only on 27 specialists limits its external validity, this study will serve as a base for in-depth studies with more expanded panels that will provide better indicators for purification management in coastal waters of Korea.
This study describes the realtime monitoring system for water quality conditions in coastal waters. Some issues on the data qualify control and quality analysis are examined along with examples of erroneous data. Three different cases of database produced by the realtime monitoring system are presented and analyzed, namely 1) hypoxic condition, 2) over-saturated D.O. and 3) short-term variability of temperature and D.O. In utilizing the realtime database, D.O. prediction and warning models are developed based on autoregressive stochastic process. The model is very simple, yet, users in various levels from powerful and useful with its ability to send warning messages to users in varous levels from governmental administrative staff to local fisherman, and give them some allowances to cope with the situation.
A study on the fine structure of the marine diatoms has been carried out for taxonomical purpose during the periods from September 1983 to March 1987 in Korean coastal waters. Fine structure of smallThalassiosira(Bacillariophyceae) was studied by means of light microscope and scanning electron nisroscopy. Secondarily, six species of Thalassiosira were identified and described. Of these Thalassiosia allenii, T. binata and T. conferta were new records for Korean coastal waters. Thalassiosira aestivalis, T.allenii, T.binata, T.conferta, and T. pacifica have a valve with a single labiate process and one central and one marginal ring of strutted processes, but T.rotula has many central strutted processes close together instead of one central strutted process.
The bacteria utilizing 3-chlorobenzoate as a sole carbon and energy source were isolated by Most-Probable-Number technique and identified in Korean coastal waters. Pseudomonas, Moraxella and Flavobacterium were dominant genera and comprised 70.2% of total isolates. Forty-four biochemical, cultural, morphological and physiological testa were performed and average linding cluster analysis was conducted from the test results. Total 92.7% of isolates were clustered into 17 groups under the 80% similarity level. The degradation of 3-chlorobenzoate was performed by many heterogeneous bacteria and the species diversity of these bacterial group offers informations of the stability of bacterial communities in relation to carbon compound cycling in coastal enviromnents.
Concentrations of suspended particulate matters (SPM) and their distribution patterns were monitored three times in the East China Sea during the winter season in 1998 and 1999. SPM concentrations showed significant temporal variations controlled by the atmospheric conditions and sea states. In coastal area, SPM values were about 10-20 mg/l in fair weather conditions, but exceeded 100mg/l during the storm periods. Turbid waters were distributed widespread in the continental shelf of the East China Sea and the coastal area of the Korean Peninsula, and these two areas were connected along a NE-SW direction. The distribution patterns of turbid waters were interpreted as representing the transport behavior of suspended matter. Although the primary source of inner shelf mud deposits of Korea seems to be the Korean Peninsula, contribution from the East China Sea to the coastal area of Korea increases especially during the winter season.
The temporal and spatial distribution of the coastal cold waters which was formed due to winter colling in the South Sea of Korea was analyzed by IR images from satellite and in situ data from shipboard observations. The coastal waters are known to be consisted of the Yellow Sea Coastal Waters(YSCW) and the South Korean Coastal Waters(SKCW). The former is driven around the Chuja-do and drifted into the Cheju Strait by residual currents, while the latter expands toward offsea by southward wind forcing. The expansion patterns of the SKCW were observed as sinking expansion or drifting expansion such that both were strongly dependent on the surface heat flux conditions. Under the condition of positive heat flux(warmer sea surface) or when the sea surface heat is lost to the atmosphere, the surface water started sinking and eventually expanded toward the open sea causing the cooling of the water column. For the negative heat flux the surface water was just drifted horizontally and expanded seaward and in this case only the surface layer of water was cooled.

To investigate the flow patterns and diffusions in the Taean coastal waters of the eastern Yellow Sea, hydraulic and numerical experiments of tidal currents and diffusions of dye and cooling water were performed during spring tide along with field observations. Flow patterns obtained by the hydraulic and numerical experiments approximately coincide with those of the field observations. In the fold observations of tidal current, currents flow southwestward during the ebb tide, while currents flow northeastward during the flood tide. and the maximum velocity is 2.13 ㎧ toward WSW direction. The Eulerian diffusion coefficient estimated from field measmements of current is 7.82$\times$10$^{5}$$\textrm{cm}^2$/s. Diffusion coefficients obtained from the area of dye plume in the model are given by the expression 0.18 $r^{4}$3/, and the coefficients have the range of 10$^{5}$ ~10$^{6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$/s. These values are similar to the Eulerian diffusion coefficient estimated fram field measurements. Diffusion coefficients obtained in the hydraulic model are one to two orders higher than those obtained in the Onsan Bay in the eastern waters and two to three orders higher than those obtained in the Chinhae Bay in the southern waters of the Korean Peninsula. Diffusion patterns of cooling water by numerical experiments are similar to those of dye plume by hydraulic experiments. Both hydraulic and numerical experiment results of diffusions of dye plume and cooling water in the Taean coastal waters, have shown that the diffusion during the ebb tide is more prevalent than one during the flood tide.
This study aimed to review the reorganization of fisheries and the future tasks in accordance with the establishment of new fishery order in the Northeast Asian Seas. As the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which recognized the sovereign rights of Coastal States in a 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ), entered into force in 1994, the three countries of Korea, China and Japan ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1996 and started negotiations to establish a new fishery order consistent with the EEZ system. However, a conflict of interest occurred because of differences in fisheries between countries, negotiations many times have proceeded, resulting in the signing of fishery agreement between China and Japan in 1997, Korea and Japan in 1998, and Korea and China in 2000. Each fishery arrangement consists of a dual system of EEZ and provisional waters (middle waters, provisional waters). The two countries are engaged in mutual fishing based on coastal states in EEZ, and in the fishing operation under the principle of flag state in provisional waters. There are overlapping or ambiguous jurisdictions in the intermediate waters and provisional waters that are jointly available to both fisheries. The presence of these seas is a challenge to the establishment of a reasonable international fisheries management system for the entire Northeast Asian Seas. In this context, the challenges of the reorganization of the new fisheries order are as follows: 1) conversion to a fishery order for coexistence of fisheries, 2) expansion to an international fishery management system, and 3) establishment of a multilateral fishery cooperation system. Although the jurisdiction of their own waters has been expanded through the establishment of EEZ according to new fishery order, the need for mutual cooperation grows when considering the movement and migration of fishery resources, fishery management, fish consumption and trade. In addition to the fisheries cooperation between the governments, it is also necessary to revitalize the civil cooperation focused on fishermen who exploit fishing grounds together.
