Vietnamese cities have a high risk of flooding under climate change due to their geographical characteristics. In this situation, the urban area is expanding with rapid growth of urban population. However, the risk of flooding is increasing due to the increase in impermeable areas and insufficient infrastructure. This study analyzed the urban expansion trend at the national level in Vietnam for the past 10 years (2007-2017) by using the Urban Expansion Intensity Index. Also, this study selected Hue City as a region with a large impact of climate change and a rapid expansion and found the possibility of flooding in the urban expansion area. The result showed that cities have been expanded around major cities in the Red River Delta, Mekong Delta, and coastal areas. In the case of Hue City, the area with fast expansion rate has a higher expected flood area. It implies that the risk of flood disasters may increase if the urabn expansion is carried out without disaster prevention measures. It is expected that Korean urban disaster prevention policies such as urban climate change disaster vulnerability analysis system will be helpful in establishing urban plans considering climate change in the fast growing regions such as Vietnam.

A small hydro-power plant operated by cooling water discharged from the power plant is under construction. In this study, the flow characteristics of the effluent channel and the outfall coastal zone in which the facilities are constructed have been measured and analysed. The flow pattern is highly dependent on the effluent discharge and clearly classified as these typical areas; the upstream and downstream areas of the weir, and the outfall coastal zone. The discharge and the width of the channel in the upstream area of the weir are increased step by step, so the water level fluctuation is small. The flow overtopping the weir is rapidly changing and has highly vertical fluctuation patterns after hydraulic jump just below the weir. The flow pattern in the outfall zone is directed toward the seaward direction and the velocity is dominated by the tidal level fluctuation. The mean tidal range in this area is about 10% greater than that of the Tongyeong tidal gauging station and the wave effects are negligible because of the sheltering effects of this area.

Landscape structure changes over the past three decades were determined with land use and land cover(LULC) maps, and their relationships with mean air temperature time series were the analyzed for the Busan metropolitan area and South Kyeongsang Province, Korea. The geometric structures of the LULC data were quantitatively represented based on FRAGSTATS, a spatial pattern analysis program for quantifying landscape structure. FRAGSTATS-derived landscape metrics confirmed that there were major changes in LULC and landscape fragmentation in the region. Meteorological observation records showed that mean air temperature had increased from $14.1^{\circ}C$ in the 1990's to $14.8^{\circ}C$ in the 2000's in Busan. For South Kyeongsang Province, they increased from $13.2^{\circ}C$ to $13.9^{\circ}C$ during the same time period. These long-term temperature changes are correlated with typical spatial pattern changes of LULC in the southeastern region of the country. Spatial metrics analysis showed that urban area expanded from 9.7% to 26.8% of Busan while forest and agricultural land decreased by 9.6% and 14.9%, respectively over the past thirty years. The significant urbanization are tightly associated with deforestation, removal of agricultural land, and fast temperature increases since the 1990's. The urban area of South Kyeongsang Province rapidly increased, and it became 12 times as large as it was. The degree of temperature increases differed among three different sub-regions. The temperature increasing rate was lowest in the coastal region while the colder mountainous region had the highest figure.
We analyzed characteristics of rainfall-runoff for the channel of Yongwon area made by a new port construction. And we conducted inundation analysis on the region of lower elevation near the coast. SWMM5 was calibrated with the storm produced by the typhoon Megi from August 19 to August 20 in 2004, and was verified with the storm from August 22 to August 22 in 2004. We performed hydraulic channel routing of Yongwon channel about typhoon Megi from August 19 to August 20 in 2004 by UNET model which is a hydraulic channel routing. The simulated runoff hydrographs were added to the new stream as lateral inflow hydrographs and a watershed runoff hydrograph was the upstream boundary condition. The downstream boundary condition data were estimated by the measured stage hydrographs. The maximum stage that was calculated by hydraulic channel routing was higher than the levee of inundated region in typhoon Megi. Thus we can suppose an inundation to have been occurred. We performed inundation analysis about typhoon Megi from August 19 to August 20 in 2004 and flood discharge of return period 10~150 years. And we estimated each inundation area. The inundation areas by return periods of storms were estimated by 3.4~5.7 ha. The causes of inundation are low heights of levee crests (D.L. 2.033~2.583 m), storm surges induced by typhoons and reverse flow through the coastal sewers (D.L. -0.217~0.783 m). A result of this study can apply to establish countermeasure of a flood disaster in Yongwon.
All kinds of environmental problems are related to each local and geographical environment. For this reason, it is necessary for schools in each region to provide environmental education which suits the geographical character of their particular region. In order to provide solutions to the environmental problems of each school's geographic region, the goal of this research is as follows: 1. We can make students realize the relationship between the human race and the environment by teaching according to the environmental conditions in each local area. 2. By teaching students about the problems in their own local environment, we can increase their concern about the state of their local surroundings. 3. When teaching about the environment, it is useful to use educational material which suits the character of each local region. 4. Students' interest in environmental preservation can be aroused through extracurricular environmental activities. The ares concerned are Chonnam and Kwangju City, which are divided into urban, industrial, rural, coastal, and mountainous areas. The conclusion about considering environmental education in environmental school social studies is as follows: 1. Kwangju and Chonnam should be divided into five sections, each with similar geographical environments. This will be an improvement over the old uniform approach to environmental studies in which all regions were treated as being the same each region will now receive special attention. 2. It is necessary to maximize the efficient use of the Environmental Education Building. When Media, environmental data and special materials for environmental education are used effectively, teachers can lead class effectively and students will be more interested in the class. 3. We can detect the cause of pollution, increase interest in the environment and easily solve environmental problems by collecting and displaying environmental educational materials. 4. An environmental education corner could boost students' interest in environmental problems and could act as a kind of bridge between theoretical and practical education. 5. Media and environmental data must be specialized according to the geographic character of each region. In this way, we can expect to improve the quality of environmental education over the simplistic environmental education of previous years. 6. Students will become interested in the problems of the region in which they live through social studies, and primarily through the environmental curriculum. 7. We can prevent learning deficiencies by making a consistent teaching plan. The teaching and learning methods will be improved and the teachers will be proud of what they teach. 8. The purpose of the Education Procedure Content Analysis is to make teaching and learning concise and easy by systematizing environmental and related subjects. This can be done by adding an environmental unit to the geographic section of social studies. 9. Citizens' interest in their own residential environment can be increased through action by sustaining environmental preservation movements to local region people.
Offshore renewable energy resources are attractive alternatives in addressing the nation's clean energy policies because of the high demand for electricity in the coastal region. As a large portion of potential resources is in deep and farther water, economically competitive floating systems have been developed. Despite the advancement of floating technologies, the high capital cost remains a primary barrier to go ahead offshore renewable energy projects. The dynamically installed piles (DIPs) have been considered one of the most economical pile concepts due to their simple installation method, resulting in cost and time-saving. Nevertheless, applications to real fields are limited because of uncertainties and underestimated load capacity. Thus, this study suggests the appropriate analytical approach to estimate the inclined load capacity of the DIPs by using the upper bound plastic limit analysis (PLA) method. The validity of the PLA under several conditions is demonstrated through comparison to the finite element (FE) method. The PLA was performed to understand how flukes, soil profiles, and load inclinations can affect the inclined load capacity and to provide reliable evaluations of the total resistance of the DIPs. The studies show that PLA can be a useful framework for evaluating the inclined load capacity of the DIPs under undrained conditions.
The scientific objectives of PACRIM (Pacific Rim) are to advance the understanding of polarimetric and interferometric radar and to promote its application in environmental research designed to detect and quantify changes found in both the physical and humanly dominated ecosystems on the earth's surface. The information derived is used to more readily identify environments at risk; improve environmental decision making and the management of resources and thereby lead to the implementation of more effective and sustainable land use practices. PACRIM is a collaborative research project was organized by NASA's Mission to Planet Earth, Airborne Sciences Program; the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; CSIRO-COSSA and the Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS at the University of New South Wales. A decade of working with AIRSAR data (1993-2003) in the Australia-Asian-Pacific region has provided the opportunity for more than 400 investigators from 20 countries to collect, analyse, interpret and apply state-of-the-art radar data to earth-science studies. This has been achieved by scientists working within seven broad research themes; o Forestry and vegetation o Geology and tectonic processes o Interferometry o Disaster management o Coastal analysis o Agriculture o Urban and regional development. This paper presents an overview of the three data acquisition missions (1993,1996 and 2000) and the science research outcomes achieved from analyzing high quality radar data.

The Waimea Basin is located on the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a highly productive area with intense water use with multi-stakeholder interest in water. Irrigation from the underground aquifers here makes up the largest portion of used water; however the same aquifers are also the key urban and industrial sources of water. The Waimea/Wairoa Rivers are the main sources of recharge to the underlying aquifers and also feed the costal springs that highly valued by the community and iwi. Due to the location of the main rivers and springs close to the urban centre the water resource system here has high community and aesthetic values. Recent enhanced hydrological modelling work has shown the water resources in this area to be over allocated by 22% for a 1:10 year drought security for maintaining a minimalistic flow of 250 l/s in the lower Waimea River. The current irrigated land area is about 3700 hectares with an additional potential for irrigation of 1500 hectares. Further pressures are also coming on-line with significant population growth in the region. Recent droughts have resulted in significant water use cutbacks and the threat of seawater intrusion in the coastal margins. The Waimea Water Augmentation Committee (WWAC) initiated a three year stage 1 feasibility study in 2004/2005 into the viability of water storage in the upper parts of the catchment for enhancing water availability and its security of supply for consumptive, environmental, community and aesthetic benefits downstream. The project also sought to future proof water supply needs for the Waimea Plains and the surrounding areas for a 50 - 100 year planning horizon. The broad range stage 1 investigation programme has identified the Upper Lee Catchment as being suitable for a storage structure to provide the needs identified and also a possibility for some small scale hydro electricity generation as well. The stage 2 detailed feasibility investigations that are underway now (2007/2008), and to be completed in two years is to provide all details for progressing with the next stage of obtaining necessary permits for construction and commissioning a suitable dam.
There are numerous approaches available to cleanup a contaminated surface and subsurface ground currently in use, however, these methods all classify the decontamination after the contamination has penetrated into the soil masses and is costly. Unlike these approaches, in this study, utilization of soil's self-decontamination ability by rearranging and preplanning of the topographical features and surface and subsurface drainage systems for the potential contamination sites before or during contamination process has been considered as an another cleanup method. Step by step explanations on why and how to develop the self-decontamination procedure is proposed in detail. Two examples are presented including contaminated saltwater intrusion along a coastal region and control or prevention of radioactive toxic radon gas ($^{222}Rn$) in residential areas. The effectiveness of the proposed systems to these two examples using the soil's self-decontamination ability is well illustrated.

From 1998 to 2008, the bacteriological quality of seawater in Kamak Bay, Korea, was monitored. The total and fecal coliforms in seawater were monitored as bacterial indicators, and the level of fecal coliform contamination was used to evaluate seawater quality. In the southern shellfish growing area of Kamak Bay, the observed fecal coliform geometric mean (GM) and estimated 90th percentile did not exceed the quality standards for fecal coliforms in seawater in Korea and th USA (GM<14 MPN/100 mL, 90th percentile<43 MPN/100 mL). The GM and estimated 90th percentile of the fecal coliform levels in the adjacent northern area of Kamak Bay were higher than in the southern area. Stations near wastewater discharge sites and urban areas in the north had the lowest quality and did not meet the bacteriological seawater quality criteria. The high fecal coliform levels in the Seonso coastal region near wastewater discharges and northern urban areas declined significantly following dredging and operation of a sewage treatment plant.
