Effects of Loess Application in Coastal Benthic Ecosystem (적조 방제용 황토살포가 연안 저서생태계에 미치는 영향)

  • Large scale of fish kills by red tides has been occurred every year in coastal water fisheries of Korea. To suppress red tide spreading out over the south coastal water of the Korean Peninsula large amount of loess has been applied every year because loess is known to be effective in removing red tide organisms. Effects of loess application in ecosystem of underwater near sea shore were investigated with some physical characteristics of loess. Loess used for the red tide reduction consisted of very fine particles, of which size was mostly less than 0.1 mm. Particles of loess blocked light penetration, which is essential for the underwater ecosystem. Loess also pushed pH down by the hydrolysis activities of aluminium and iron It was found that underwater ecosystems where loess was applied near sea shore were devastated. Sea plants such as sea weeds were gone leaving only their roots. Clams and snails were dead under the loess dust blanket. And fishes were not found at all where loess has been sprayed lot long time. It was found that even if loess has some capacity to reduce red tide temporarily, loess application should be slopped to protect underwater ecosystems.

  • The temporal and spatial distribution of the coastal cold waters which was formed due to winter colling in the South Sea of Korea was analyzed by IR images from satellite and in situ data from shipboard observations. The coastal waters are known to be consisted of the Yellow Sea Coastal Waters(YSCW) and the South Korean Coastal Waters(SKCW). The former is driven around the Chuja-do and drifted into the Cheju Strait by residual currents, while the latter expands toward offsea by southward wind forcing. The expansion patterns of the SKCW were observed as sinking expansion or drifting expansion such that both were strongly dependent on the surface heat flux conditions. Under the condition of positive heat flux(warmer sea surface) or when the sea surface heat is lost to the atmosphere, the surface water started sinking and eventually expanded toward the open sea causing the cooling of the water column. For the negative heat flux the surface water was just drifted horizontally and expanded seaward and in this case only the surface layer of water was cooled.

Long Term Trend of Change In Water Temperature and Salinity in Coastal Waters around Korean Peninsula (한반도 근해 수온 및 염분의 장기변화 추이)

  • The long­term trend and inter­relationship with depth of temperature and salinity in coastal waters of Korea are studied using coastal oceanographic observation and serial oceanographic data measured by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. Temperature of coastal waters of Korea except south­western sea of Korea where cold water appears to increase in summer. In case of temperature offshore, surface temperature of East Sea increases, the reverse, for 50m and 100m decreases. Temperature in South Sea of Korea increases in whole depth and for the Yellow Sea, surface temperature increases, but for 50m decreases. In case of salinity offshore, surface salinity of East Sea decreases, but for 50m increases. Surface salinity in South Sea of Korea decreases, the reverse, form 50m and 100m increases. salinity in the Yellow Sea decrease in whole depth According to the result of inter­relationship analysis, for temperature relationship coefficients of 50m and 100m in the East Sea and South Sea of Korea is higher, however, for the Yellow sea the inter­relationship between 50m and 100m is lower. In case of salinity, the inter­relationship between surface and 50m, and for the South Sea of Korea, between 50m and 100m, and for the Yellow Sea, between surface and 50m is higher.

The Influence of Oceanic Conditions on the Occurrence of Cochlodinium polykrikoides Blooms in the East Sea (동해안의 Cochlodinium polykrikoides 적조 발생에 미치는 해황의 특성)

  • Harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms have been frequently occurred in coastal areas of the East Sea since 1995. We compared the oceanic conditions in years 1995, 2001 and 2003 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong, and in years 1998 and 2004 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was not appeared. We studied temporal and spatial variation of upwelling and geostrophic currents on the western channel of Korean Strait, an entrance of the East Sea. The period and occurrence area of C. polykrikoides bloom was depended on variation of upwelling in summer. In the distributions of geostrophic current, southward current was dominant near the coast in August, 1998 and 2000. Whereas northward current was dominant near and off the coast in August, 1995 and 2003 which the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong. When compared dominant phytoplankton of the coastal areas in each year, Kuroshio indicator species Proboscia alata and Chaetoceros affine were dominant, respectively, in 2001 and 2003 at every stations. However, the dominant species was variable at each coastal area in 1998 and 2000. In 2003, the abundance of Sagitta elegans which is known as the cold water indicator was low, but the abundance of S. enflata, warm water indicator, was very high in Gangneung compared to Sokcho. It seemed that the distribution of S. elegans is restricted by strong warm water current. In conclusion, it was estimated that the distribution of C. polykrikoides bloom in the coastal area of the East Sea was closely related with the strength of East Korea Warm Current and upwelling.

On the Characteristics of the Oceanic Condition in the Surface Layer of the Northwestern East Sea (Japan Sea) (동해 북서해역의 표층해황 특성)

  • Seasonal and interannual variations of the oceanic condition in the surface layer of the northwestern East Sea are described. The seasonal variation shows two types in the water circulation. In the first type the East Korean Warm Current (EUC) Water are dominant in the East Korean Bay in spring, while in summer the cold water region develops as the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) becomes strong. In the second type the cold water appears in the East Korean Bay from spring, but in summer the EKWC comes close to the coast, thus influencing the coastal cold water region. The characteristics of the interannual variation can be classified into 4 types according to the relative strength between the EKWC and the NKCC, and the paths of these currents. In each case various sizes of cyclonic cold eddies and/or anti-cyclonic warm eddies are formed frequently in the East Korean Bay.

  • Wave breaking and breaking wave-induced hydrodynamics are very important subjects in the field of coastal and ocean hydrodynamics and engineering. In the coastal zone, a submerged breakwater has been increasingly popular, since it is one of nature-matching structures with multi- functions such as (1) wave energy dissipation by wave breaking and friction, (2) oxygen supply to sea by wave breaking and breaking wave, (3) water purification by entrained air bubbles, (4) keeping. good seascape. and (5) good habitat for sea livings. Recently, the breaking wave-induced high frequency pressure over a submerged breakwater is said to have a function of gathering sea livings around the structure, which has encouraged the construction of the submerged breakwater in coastal zone.   • Shallow water waves are hindcasted from sea wind fields, which include wave transformations such as shoaling, refraction, diffraction, reflection and wave breaking. In case of estimating sea wind field in shallow water, the sea wind revised from free wind obtained by the typhoon model is widely used. However, this method is not able to consider the effect of land topography on the wind field, which will be important factor for shallow water wave forecasting and hindcasting. In this study, therefore, the effect of land topography on sea wind field in shallow water is investigated for shallow water wave forecasting and hindcasting with high accuracy. The 3-D MASCON model is introduced to consider the influence of land topography on the wind field. And, for two areas divided by the topographical characteristics, i.e. shielded and opened coastal areas, sea wind field is examined by comparison between initial wind field by typhoon model and modified wind field by 3-D MASCON model. Finally, applying these sea wind fields to SWAN model, the results of shallow water wave calculated in shielded and opened coastal areas are compared, and, also, the effect of MASCON model on shallow water wave forecasting and hindcasting is discussed.

Distribution of Dissolved and Particulate Organic Carbon in the East China Sea in Summer (하계 동중국해에서의 용존 및 입자유기탄소의 분포 특성)

  • This study was conducted around the southwest sea areas of Jeju and coastal sea areas of China in August 2003 and September 2004 to research distribution patterns of dissolved inorganic nutrients, dissolved and particulate organic carbon. Distribution patterns of nutrients in the East China Sea in summer were shown to be influenced by water masses and phytoplankton. Water masses in the East China Sea in summer, except for coastal sea areas of china, showed less vertical mixing process, causing decline in the inflow of nutrients to surface water. Bottom water, however, showed high concentration, since nutrients made by dissolved organic matters from surface water were accumulated at the bottom. Sea areas with high concentration of chlorophyll a showed low concentration of nutrients and vice versa, indicating biological activities control dissolved inorganic nutrients. The distribution of dissolved organic carbon didn't show any correlation with salinity, temperatures, and water masses. Areas around the river mouth of the Changjiang showed high concentration of dissolved organic carbon more than $100{\mu}M$, but relatively low concentration in the southwest sea areas of Jeju, indicating that the river mouth of the Changjiang coastal water has a great influence on dissolved organic carbon in the East China Sea. Distribution patterns of particulate organic carbon in the research areas showed the highest concentration of average $9.23{\mu}M$ in coastal areas of China influenced by the river mouth of the Changjiang coastal water. By comparison, the concentration was relatively low at $3.04{\mu}M$ in the southeast sea areas of Jeju on which the Taiwan warm current has influence, and was $7.23{\mu}M$ in the central sea areas of Jeju. Thus, there is much indication that the river mouth of the Changjiang coastal water serves as a supplier of particulate organic carbon along with autogenous source. In general, if particulate organic carbon has a high correlation with the concentration of Chlorophyll a, it is thought that it is originated from autogenous source. However, the southeast sea areas of Jeju shows low salinity below 30, therefore it is proper to think that its origin is terrestrial source rather than that of autogenesis.

Feeding Habits of Juvenile and Young Yellow Tail Seriola quinqueradiata in Coastal Waters of the South Sea, Korea (한국 남해안에 출현하는 방어(Seriola quinqueradiata) 치어 및 유어의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of juvenile and young Seriola quinqueradiata, which were collected by a hand net and set net in coastal waters of the South Sea during the period from June to August 2014 and 2015, were analyzed. The size range of juveniles was 4.9-10.9 cm FL, and that of young S. quinqueradiata was 11.0-20.4 cm FL. Important prey items in the diets of juveniles were euphausiacea and copepoda, dominated by the Euphausia sp., Paracalanus sp. and Calanus sinicus while the diets of the young consisted mainly of pisces, dominated by Engraulis japonicus, Trachurus japonicus. Stomach content compositions differed significantly among body size levels in both the juveniles and young (ANOSIM, P<0.05). With increasing size, the mN/ST constantly decreased while the mW/ST constantly increased (one-way ANOVA). Graphical analysis of the diet composition showed that juvenile S. quinqueradiata are generalized feeders, young is a specialized feeders characterized by strong individual feeding specialization.

  • The optical properties of the sea water were studied by use of underwater photometers in the coastal waters of Busan, from December 1975 to May 1976. The absorption coefficient of the sea water in the area ranged from 0.223 to 0.901 and the mean was 0.355. Maximum valae of monthly mean was 0.454 in December, while the minium was 0.301 in January. The transparency in winter was higher than that in spring and the mean was 4. 7 meters. The relation between absorption coefficient (m) and transparency (D) was m= 1. 67/ D. The rate of light penetration at 5 m-layer in the area ranged from 1. 73 to 24.09 percent and the mean was 13.63 percent, while the rate at 10 m-layer ranged from 0.067 to 8.05 percent and the mean was 2.95 percent.
