  • Three Pressure type wave gauges were installed for about 10 days for the analysis of long wave agitations in Mukho Harbor. Helmholtz and second resonant periods of seiche in Mukho Harbor are shown to be approximately 10.0-14.3 and 3.3 minutes from the spectral analysis of measured wave data. Amplification ratio at Helmholtz period reaches about 6.8 and the wave amplitudes in the harbor were in the range of 5-10 cm during the measurement period. Helmholtz and second resonant periods of seiche in Mukho Harbor agree very well with those computed using Jeong dt al. (1993b)'s model. The model gives rise to the first and third resonant peaks at 7.5 and 1.9 minutes, respectively.

  • In Korea, harbor tranquility is generally estimated by using both methods of investigating harbor calmness under abnormal wave condition and evaluating the harbor serviceability. The efficiency of the former method is questionable as the tranquility of a harbor is judged by a wave height criterion that is arbitrarily determined without rational basis. In case of the latter method, the utilization rate of a harbor is estimated by using the exceedance probability of wave height or the distribution of wave heights and periods that is obtained from longterm measured or hindcasted wave data. Use of long-term data is desirable in order to guarantee the accuracy of the exceedance probability. Meanwhile, the criterion for determining maximum allowable wave height for cargo handling works is too simple and has limitations for being used in an actual field condition. Problems of existing method for estimating harbor tranquility were verified by the wave observation data in Busan New Port. And the importance of the field observation data was emphasized. It is necessary to perform long-term wave monitoring inside and outside of major ports in Korea in order to establish more advanced standard for evaluating harbor tranquility based on such observed wave data.

  • Coastal and harbor structures, which are constructed for the beach protection and coastal zone development, often cause the severe beach erosion problem resulted from changes of longshore sediment transport. In this study, we present a new methodology to estimate the longshore sediment transport rates using the measured data of beach profiles or shorelines. The methods is applied for the prediction of longshore sediment transport rates along Kailua beach, Hawaii and shorelines in the vicinity of Anmok Harbor, Korea.

  • Today, harbor oscillation problems are the most significant factor to consider when designing harbors serving very large ships. In coastal harbors, large vessels moored in the elastic hawsers are often displaced due to the resonance between long period waves and mooring systems. As a result, cargo handling may be interrupted and the hawsers may be broken, especially when the amplification becomes extreme. The most significant harbor confronted with harbor oscillation problem in Korea is Pohang New port. Many cases of problems are being reported by the pilot association and the local office of MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries). However, it is difficult to prevent the arrival of long waves causing oscillation within this harbor. Moreover, the Korean government has already started a new port plan at the mouth of Yeongil Bay without addressing the problems that have occurred in Pohang New port. This study deals with the variation of harbor oscillation due to the construction of a 4.1 km breakwater at the bay mouth including the arrangement of the new berths. Numerical methods used are in fairly standard form from the extended mile slope equation. The obtained numerical results were compared with field measurement from the previous and this will bring a certain level of discussion and consideration of variation to the future port development.

  • An accurate estimation of water level variation when thewaves propagate to the coastal regionis very important for the port and harbor development plan. This study describes the application of a hybrid element model to harbor oscillation problem due to the construction of shore structure and implementation of shore boundary. The site selected is Pusan Harbor area with the third development and the Artificial Island plan. The observed water level changes at the site are compared with the result of the numerical experiment. The model gives a very important prediction of water level changes for navigation and harbor design.

  • This paper analyzed the color of harbor and fishing village for the better landscape. Accordingly the aim of this study is to find out the color-scape in harbor, such as regional color and present status are to analyze with elements of design. In beginning point of development, it is to take practicable data about color planning for marine tourism. Regarding the utility of these characteristics, hue, value, chroma can be checked and design of color-scape may be possible to work out future harbor environments. This study suggests that harbor of contemporary is to be environmental harmony and regional color control. The result of this research, it is carried out that the color-scape is checked by partnership of experts, official and regional person with "agreement of landscape" to provide reasonable criteria in color surroundings. An analysis of regional color-scape is expected to use for landscape improvement of fishing village and harbor.

  • Stepped weir of this study was suggested a type of natural type structures. Unique flow, such as Wave type flow, at downstream of mild slope stepped occurs. WTF(Wave type flow) is different with hydraulic jump occurred at Round crest weir. WTF is phenomenon to rise the water level by recirculation area occurred by step height at downstream of mild slope stepped. Wave height of WTF condition is higher than tailwater level and maximum velocity of WTF condition occurs in area of water surface. In this results, WTF presents to be important factor for design of join area of weir with levee. This study got and analyzed hydraulic condition occurred of WTF, scales of WTF and velocity profiles on flow patterns using experiments. WTF was not consider to stepped weir design and this results can be important data for design of stepped weir and structures.

  • The small harbors and fishing ports in Korea have less economic efficiency if the previous construction method of breakwater would be utilized due to bad ground conditions in spite of low design waves. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new type breakwater economically applicable to the cases with low design wave. In this study, a soldier pile type breakwater, which is found to be economic and can be easily constructed on the ground without any need of treatment of the ground, was newly introduced. The effects of embedded depth, reinforcement methods as well as pile types including saw type and flat type on the lateral behavior of the proposed breakwaters installed in loose sandy soils were investigated from model test. The test results revealed that the lateral resistance increases by increasing the embedded depth and by adopting the reinforcement techniques such as raker and anchor. Furthermore, it was also verified that the saw type breakwater shows better geotechnical performance than the flat type breakwater.

  • Analyses of tidal observations and a numerical model of the $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides in the Uldolmok waterway located at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula are described. This waterway is well known fer its strong tidal flows of up to more than 10 knots at the narrowest part of the channel. Harmonic analysis of the observed water level at five tidal stations reveals dramatic changes in the amplitude and phase of the shallow water constituents at the station near the narrowest part, while survey results show a decreasing trend in local mean sea levels toward the narrow section. It was also observed that the amplitudes of semi-diurnal constituents, $M_2$ and $S_2$ are diminishing toward the narrowest part of the waterway. Two-dimensional numerical modeling shows that the $M_2$ energy flux is dominated by the component coming from the eastern boundary. The $M_2$ energy is inward from both open boundaries and is transported toward the narrow region of the channel, where it is frictionally dissipated or transferred to other constituents due to a strong non-linear advection effect. It is also shown that the $M_4$ generation is strong around the narrow region, and the abrupt decrease in the M4 amplitude in the region is due to a cancellation of the locally generated M4 with the component propagated from open boundaries. The superposition of both propagated and generated M4 contributions also explains the discontinuity of the M4 phase lag in the region. The tide-induced residual sea level change and the regeneration effect of the $M_2$ tide through interaction with $M_4$ are also examined.

  • Due to the impermeability of outer wall facilities such as Breakwaters which dissipates the wave energy and keeps harbor tranquility, the enclosed area of harbor becomes partially blocked and the water exchange can be reduced. Recent trends of port development protect water quality and emphasize Water-Front, so the method which enhances the circulation of harbor waters and the dilution of the water pollutants are studied. The best improvement of water quality is a remove of pollutant source on land, but an enclosed port must be enhanced the tidal exchange. For this end, the best improvement may be made a drain-route on the existing outer wall facilities. In this study, the numerical computations were carried out to predict the circulation of harbor waters and the tidal exchange through the drain-rout in the polluted harbor(Samchonpo-guhang) located at the east coast of South Sea. Computational models adopting FDM(Finite Difference Method) were used here and were already verified from the previous studies und ocean survey. As a result of this study, circulation and the tidal exchange at the harbor before and after introduction of drain-route were assessed.
