Masan Bay is a typical enclosed coastal sea and receving body of discharges from Masan city and Changwon city. A POTW(Publicly Owned Treatment Works) started operation from November 1993 when the population of drainage area increased abcent 1.0 million and the effluent from this Plant has being discharged to the enclosed sea where is located at 15km distance from inner Masan Bay. Thus the inflow pattern to Masan Bay has been changed. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the relationship between urban wastewater discharge and water qualify change in a typical coastal zone. It is necessary a) to evaluate the change of input loadings, b) to determine the effect on water quality changes, and c) to find the respective importance of improvement options that must be controlled in the wastewater treatment plant. It was concluded that the sea water quality has being adversely affected by the discharge of insufficiently treated urban wastewater and the nutrient removal in wastewater treatment was very important and urgent.

In this study, we analyzed the water temperature variability in the sea area of the Korean Peninsula in August, before and after the typhoon inflow through Typhoon Soulik, the 19th in 2018 that turned right around the Korean Peninsula and passed through the East Sea, and Typhoon Bavi, the eighth in 2020 that advanced north and passed through the Yellow Sea. The data used in this study included the water temperature data recorded in the real-time information system for aquaculture environment provided by the National Institute of Fisheries Science, wind data near the water as recorded by the automatic weather system, and water temperature data provided by the NOAA/AVHRR satellite. According to the analysis, when typhoons with different movement paths passed through the Korean Peninsula, the water temperature in the East Sea repeatedly upwelled (northern winds) and downwelled (southern winds) depending on the wind speed and direction. In particular, when Typhoon Soulik passed through the East sea, the water temperature dropped sharply by around 10 ℃. When Typhoon Bavi passed through the center of the Yellow Sea, the water temperature rose in certain observed areas of the Yellow Sea and even in certain areas of the South Sea. Warmer water flowed into cold water regions owing to the movement of Typhoon Bavi, causing water temperature to rise. The water temperature appeared to have recovered to normal. By understanding the water temperature variability in the sea area of the Korean Peninsula caused by typhoons, this research is expected to minimize the negative effects of abnormal climate on aquaculture organisms and contribute to the formulation of damage response strategies for fisheries disasters in sea areas.
The composition of water-friendly space in the port and harbour developments provides the accessibility to the sea and thus resting & recreational function of the local citizen, which should be treated importantly for the eco-friendly coastal development. However, the high demand on water-friendly space can induce another environmental problem because most port and harbour developments require marine reclamation and the water-friendly space are made up on the reclamation area. The present study analysed the problems and suggested matters to be considered in composing the water-friendly space of port and harbour developments. The study also established the management direction by site characteristics of port and harbour. In addition, we attempt to find a plan to avoid the water-friendly space composition with environmental damage and to secure the environmental and public soundness in site selection, land use and facilities plan based on case studies.
This study presented politic proposals and diverse utilization-type in coastal areas by analyzing results of reviewed related-statements of marine environment during the one year period of 2007 by Marine Environmental Impact Assessment Center. Total of 358 cases were reviewed, which was a significant increase from 270 in 2006. Consultation on the utilization of sea areas (CUSA) accounted for the largest number of 165 (46.1%) and it was followed by 104 cases of environmental impact assessment (EIA) (29.0%) and 89 cases of prior environmental review (PER) (24.9%). As such, evaluation statements (EIA+PER) related to consultations of the Ministry of Environment accounted for approximately 54% of the entire cases reviewed. To analyze the overall results of reviewing marine-related evaluation statements, utilization and planning were conducted by 47.9%, 38.4% and 13.7% in the South Sea, West Sea and East Sea of Korea, respectively. In evaluation statements (EIA+PER), port construction, industrial complex construction, urban management plan and road construction took up most of the part by 40.9%, 20.2%, 10.4% and 7.3%, respectively. In terms of CUSA-statement, it was evaluated that consultations were mostly carried out on use and reclamation of public water surface in coastal areas and on sea aggregate extraction process in EEZ. The largest number of plans for coastal use were established for Jeollanam-do, followed by Gyeongsangnam-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeonggi-do. In particular, development plans were concentrated on Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do with stable marine environment and outstanding view of the nature. In most cases, these regions are adjacent to the areas designated as a sea area for environmental management and fisheries resources protection zone. Therefore, conflicts exist between development and preservation. Also, rather than random development, more detailed marine environmental impact assessment, gathering of public opinions and politic harmony are essentially required. For efficient coastal management and environmentally sound and sustainable development, fulfilling consistent and transparent coastal policies as well as active and reliable decision making to center on coastal environment by management bodies will be important.

The objective of this paper is to explore the short-term variability of water temperature and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) derived from in-situ and satellite data (NOAA, Sea WiFS and QuikScat) in the upwelling region of the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula in June and August, 2007. Particularly we focused on the spatial variability of sea surface temperature(SST) and Chl-a in the East Korean Warm Current region. In the results of the in-situ data, the peaks of Chl-a in june was shown at a depth of 50m The peaks of Chl-a in August was shown at a depth of 10m at the stations 4 and 5 near the land, and a depth of 30m at the other stations. The Chl-a concentrations in August were also lower than those in june except for station 5. As a result, the peaks of Chl-a in August occurred at a depth of 20~40 m shallower than those of Chl-a in june. This indicates that the nutrient-rich water within the mixed layer depth may be immediately supplied by the coastal upwelling, which is due to the southerly component of wind. The relationship between SST and Chl-a showed a negative correlation, and the high concentration of Chl-a occurred in the cold water area. The southerly wind and the East Korean Warm Current influenced a remarkable offshore movement of the cold water and Chl-a near the coastal area.
While typhoons were passing by the coastal and offshore waters around the Korean peninsula, the variations of the sea surface temperature (SST) were studied. To study on the variation, the data related to the 22 typhoons among 346 typhoons which occurred in the western Pacific during 1990∼1999, daily measured field SSTs at coastal and offshore, and imageries from advanced very high resolution radiometer on NOAA satellite during 1990∼1999 were used. The average variations of the SSTs were -0.9℃ at coastal waters and -2℃ at offshore around the Korean peninsula while the typhoons were passing by. In very near coastal waters from the land, the SST was not changed because the bottom depth of the coastal waters was shallower than the depth of thermalcline, while the typhoon was passing. The temporal and spatial variation of SSTs at coastal waters in summer were depended on the various types of the typhoons'paths which were passing through the Korean peninsula. When a typhoon passed by the western parts including the Yellow Sea of the Korean peninsula upwelling cold water occurred along the eastern coastal waters of the peninsula. The reason was estimated with the typhoon that was as very strong wind which blew from south toward north direction along the eastern shore of the peninsula, led to the Ekman transport from near the eastern coastal area toward the offshore. While cold water was occurring in the eastern coast, a typhoon passed over the coastal area, the cold water disappeared. The reason was estimated that the cold water was mixed up with the surrounding warm water by the effect of the typhoon. While a cold water was occurring in the eastern coast, a typhoon passed by the offshore of the eastern coast, there were the increasing of the SST as well as the disappearing of the cold water. While a typhoon was passing by the offshore of the eastern coast, the cold water which resulted from the strong tidal current in the western coast of the peninsula was horizontally spread from the onshore to the offshore. We think that the typhoon played the role of the very strong wind which was blowing from north toward south. Therefore, the Ekman transport occurred from the onshore toward the offshore of the western coast in the Korean peninsula.

Optical properties were studied in the costal waters of the southern part of Korea based on twenty oceanographic stations from 1 st to 9 th February, 1977. Submarine daylight intensity was measured by using an underwater luxmeter (Toshiba No.9). Daylight intensity in the upper 30m depth layer was measured at 1 m depth interval. The absorption coefficient of the sea water in the area ranged from 0.101 to 2.539 (mean 0.578). The Secchi-disc depth in the area ranged from 0.8 to 13 meters (mean 5.33 meters). The relationship between absorption coefficient (K) and transparency (D) was k= 1. 704/ D. The mean water color in the area was 5. 75 (3-9) in Forel scales. The rates of light penetration for daylight at 1m layer in the area ranged from 13.18 to 82. 05% and the mean was 59.56%, while the rate at 5m layer ranged from 0.007 to 46.1% and the mean was 18.47%.
Surface and bottom sea water samples were harvested from the 5 stations in the marine ranching ground of Tongyeong coastal water from year 2000 to 2002. Cell number of heterotrophic bacteria was determined by using the plate counting method to explore the variation of the cell population of heterotrophic bacteria. Sea water samples collected in summer (in July and August) contained much larger number of heterotrophic bacteria than those harvested in spring, autumn and winter. Heterotrophic bacteria were usually more abundant in surface sea than in bottom sea water. However the reverse was true for sea water collected in December 2001 and February 2002 due to suspended solids accumulating more abundantly in seabed area because of the slower convective current of the sea water in winter. Number of heterotrophic bacteria did not have a strong relationship with frequency of typhoon indicating that the path and powerfulness of the typhoon, localized torrential downpour and temperature variation accompanying the typhoon should be considered all together at the same time as well as the frequency of typhoon to explain clearly the variation of cell number of heterotrophic bacteria. The dominant species isolated from the marine ranching ground of Tongyeong were identified to be Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Acinetobacter lwoffii and Sphingomonas paucimobilis.
Between 40,000 and 60,000 liters of light oil were spilled when an underground pipe broke at a newly constructed landfill site in coastal area, Korea. Methods were presented to examine the subsurface distribution of the contaminants in hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. As results, large quantities of oil and grease were found to have migrated horizontally at the site. Oil and grease plume at concentrations of 38-88 mg/kg was formed horizontally through silty sand with gravel fill and the vertical movement of the contaminants was thought to be limited to groundwater level between 2 and 4 m corresponding to sea water level. Right after finding the leakage area, the early action of excavation and pumping out the mixture of groundwater and oil was taken and it was proved to be very effective for preventing further contamination. Two months after the leakage, oil and grease in sea water sample near contaminated area was not detectable.
The oyster shell bed (more than 47 cm thick) atop the Gaipri Point (granite coastal bluff) in the Hampyung Bay, southwest coast of Korea which is a coastal area of southeastern margin of the Yellow Sea basin has been interpreted as unique typhoon deposit formed at about 3610 yr BP or later. The unconformable boundary between the oyster shell bed by typhoon and the granitic soil horizon of the Gaipri Point is 820 cm high above the mean high-tide water level (MHWL). The $^{14}C$ age of the oyster shells is 3610${\pm}$70 yr BP.
