  • In this study, mixed catalytic char gasification of Indonesia low-rank coal Kideco was investigated under nitrogen atmosphere and isothermal conditions at a fixed reactor. The effects of the temperature were investigated at various temperature (700, 750, 800, $850^{\circ}C$). The effects of blend ratio of catalysts ($K_2CO_3$, Ni) were investigated with different blend ratios (1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3 and 9:1). The sample was prepared by mixing with $K_2CO_3$ physically and by ionexchange method with Ni. The data from thermogravimetric analyzer and gas chromatography were applied to four gassolid reaction kinetic models including shrinking core model, volumetric reaction model, random pore model and modified volumetric reaction model.

  • Low-rank coal with high water content (32.3 wt%) was dried by fry drying, and the fuel characteristics of the dried coal from which the oil was separated by using a high-speed centrifugal separator were analyzed. After fry drying for 6 min and 10 min, the water content decreased to 5.0 wt% and 4.2 wt% respectively. The higher calorific value (HCV) of the coal increased remarkably after fry drying, from 11,442.0 kJ/kg-wet. The oil content of the fry-dried coal was 15.0 wt% and it decreased with an increase in the reheating temperature: 9.7 wt% at $80^{\circ}C$ to 9.3 wt% at $100^{\circ}C$, and then to 8.5 wt% at $120^{\circ}C$. The recovered oil could then be reused. According to of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), there was no difference in the weight loss patterns of the coal samples with different coal diameters at a reheating temperature of $120^{\circ}C$. This was because the amount of oil separated by the centrifugal separator was affected by the reheating temperature rather than the coal diameter. And derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves of raw coal before the fry-drying process, a peak is formed at $400^{\circ}C$ in which the volatile matter is gasified. In case of the fry-dried coal, the first peak is generated at $350^{\circ}C$, and the second peak is generated at $400^{\circ}C$. The first peak is caused by the oil that is replaced with the water contained in the coal during the fry-drying process. Further, the peaks of the coal samples in which the oil is separated at a reheating temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, respectively are smaller than that of the coal in which the oil is not separated, and this is caused by that the oil is separated by the centrifugal separator.

  • Synergistic effects of mixed solvents, especially with mixtures of CS$_2$ with electron donor solvents, in inducing desired structural changes in coals were studied by solvent swelling techniques in addition to differential scanning calorimetric analyses. Mixed solvents exhibit significant synergistic efficacy in swelling the coal structure of medium bituminous rank. This synergy effect appears to be physical origin that is closely related to matching solubility parameters. Since the swollen coal structure can be obtained by mixed solvents with CS$_2$ at room temperature instead of high temperature, many possible technological pathways for economical utilization of coal might be sought.

  • Taking top-coal caving mining face (TCCMF) as research object, this paper considers the combination of top-coal and immediate roof as cushion layer to build the solution model of support resistance based on the theory of elastic foundation beam. Meanwhile, the physical and mechanical properties of coal-rock combination influencing on strata behaviors is explored. The results illustrate that the subsidence of main roof in coal wall increases and the first weighting interval decreases with the increase of top-coal and immediate roof thicknesses as well as the decrease of top-coal and immediate roof elastic modulus. Moreover, the overlying strata reflecting on support has negative and positive relationship with top-coal thickness and immediate roof thickness, respectively. However, elastic modulus has limit influence on the dead weight of top-coal and immediate roof. As a result, it has similar roles on the increase of total support resistance and overlying strata reflecting on support in the limit range of roof control distance. In view of sensitive analysis causing the change of total support resistance, it can be regards as the rank of three components as immediate roof weight > overlying strata reflecting on support > top coal weight. Finally, combined with the monitoring data of support resistance in Qingdong 828, the validity of support resistance determined based on elastic foundation beam is demonstrated, and this method can be recommended to adopt for support type selecting in TCCMF.

  • In Korean coal power plants, rising coal prices have recently led to the rapid utilization of low lank coals such as sub-bituminous coal with low calorific values and low ash fusion temperatures. Using these coals beyond the design range has resulted in important issues including slagging and fouling, which cause negative effects in boiler performances and unstable operations. The purpose of this study is to observe slagging and fouling characteristics resulted from burning various ranks of pulverized coals. We have tested 3 different coals: FLAME(bituminous), KCH(sub-bituminous) and MOOLARBEN(bituminous)coals in the pilot system $50kW_{th}$ scale. A stainless steel tube with preheated air inside was installed in the downstream in order to simulate water wall. Collected ash on the probe and the slag inside the furnace near burner were analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) to verify the formation degree, surface features and color changes of the pasty ash particles. Induced coupled plasma and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were also performed to figure out the chemical characteristics of collected samples. As a result, KCH was observed that more slag was developed inside the walls of the furnace and on the probe than the other two kinds of coals, as shown in the calculate slagging and fouling indices as well.

  • The crisis of energy gives rise to the growing concerns over continuing uncertainty in the energy market. Under these circumstances, there are also increasing interests on coals. In particular, Low Rank Coal (LRC) is receiving gradual attentions from green industry. But due to is high moisture content range from 30 - 60%, drying process has to be preceded before being utilized as power plant. In this study drying kinetics of LRC is induced by using a fixed-bed reactor. The drying kinetics was evaluated in from of the particle size, the inlet gas temperature, the drying time, the gas velocity, and the LID ratio. The consideration of the reynold's number was taken for correction of gas velocity, particle size and LID was taken for correction of reactor diameter, packing height of coal. As being seen as characteristic of drying coal, it can be found that fixed-bed reactor can contributed to active drying of free water. In this sense, it could be considered that phase boundary reaction is appropriate mechanism.

  • Reactivity of Char-CO$_2$ gasification of five coals for power generation was investigated with PTGA in the temperature range 850∼1000$^{\circ}C$ and the pressure range 0.5∼2.0 MPa. The effect of coal rank, initial char characteristics and pressure on the reaction rate was evaluated for five chars. The reactivity of low lank coal char was better than that of high rank coal char, and this could be explained with the initial pore structure and surface area of char. Meso/macro-pores of char seems to markedly affect char reactivity by way of providing channels for diffusion of reactant gas into the reactive surface area. For the range of tested pressure, the reaction rate is proportional to CO$_2$ partial pressure and the reaction order ranges from 0.4 to 0.7 for five chars. The effect of total pressure on the reaction rate was small, and kinetic parameters, based on the unreacted core model, were obtained for five chars.

  • Optimal grinding condition was examined by changing only the size of screen opening with fixing other factors to produce coal fines of particle sizes required for circulating fluidized bed gasifier. At least 85 wt% of the coal particles should fall into the size range of 0.045~1.0 mm for efficient gasification. In this study, hammer mill was used to grind Chinese low rank lignite coal following grinding condition designed by Taguchi method. The analysis of signal to noise ratio showed that optimum grinding condition for the gasifier was 3 mm in primary screen size and 1.3 mm in secondary screen size on the 95% level of significance.

  • We have investigated the effects of various additives on Eco coal gasification under $CO_2$ atmosphere. The temperature ranges from $750{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ and the gasification experimental was carried out with Eco coal adding 7 wt% $K_2CO_3$, $Na_2CO_3$, $CaCO_3$, Dolomite, and non-additive under $N_2$ and $CO_2$ gas mixture. At $850^{\circ}C$, we observed that the reaction rate increased when the concentration of $CO_2$ increased. However, we also observed that the increment of reaction rate was small at more than 70% of the concentration of $CO_2$. The additives activity was ranked as 7 wt% $Na_2CO_3$ > 7 wt% $K_2CO_3$ > non-additive > 7 wt% Dolomite > 7 wt% $CaCO_3$ at $850^{\circ}C$. At the temperatures of $750^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$, $850^{\circ}C$, and $900^{\circ}C$, when the temperature increased, the gasification rate increased. The gasification was suitably described by the volumetric reaction model. Using volumetric reaction model, the activation energy of Eco coal including 7 wt% $Na_2CO_3$ gasification was 83 kJ/mol, which was the lowest value among all the alkaline additives.
