Recently, membrane processes have been replacing the conventional processes for waste water treatment to produce better quality of effluent and to meet more stringent regulations because of water shortage. However, using membrane processes for water treatment has confronted with fouling and difficulty in treating dissolved organic pollutants. In this study, membrane process equipped with crossflow microfiltration is combined with coagulation process using alum and PAC to improve permeability and treatment efficiency. The effects of coagulant dosage and optimum membrane operating conditions were investigated from measurement of permeate flow, cumulative volume, total resistance, particle size, dissolved organic pollutant, dissolved aluminium and quality of effluent. Characteristic of PAC coagulation was compared with that of alum coagulation. PAC coagulation reduced membrane fouling because of forming larger particle size and increased permeate velocity and cumulative volume. Less dissolved organic pollutants and dissolved aluminum made decreasing-rate of permeate velocity being lowered. At using $0.2\;{\mu}m$ membrane, cake filtration observed. At using $0.45\;{\mu}m$ membrane, there was floc breakage due to shear stress occurred born circulating operation. It made floc size smaller than membrane pore size, which subsequently to decrease permeate velocity and to increase total resistance. The optimum coagulation dosage was $300{\pm}50\;mg/L$ for both alum and PAC. PAC coagulation was more efficiently used with $0.2\;{\mu}m$ membrane, and the highest permeate flux was in using $0.45\;{\mu}m$membrane. The greatest efficiency of treatment was as follows; turbidity 99.8%, SS 99.9%, $BOD_5$ 94.4%, $COD_{Cr}$ 95.4%, T-N 54.3%, T-P 99.8%.
The effects of the pretreatment with coagulants on the recovery efficiency of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate, PHB) synthesized in Alcaligenes eutrophus were investigated. Al-base or Fe-base coagulants, and the dispersion method of 30% hypochlorite solution and chloroform were used as coagulants and PHB recovery method, respectively The recovery efficiency of PHB from the cells harvested with Al-base coagulants at the range from 0 to 1000 mg-Al/L was similar to that from cells harvested without the coagulants. At these conditions, the concentrations of residual aluminium in the purified PHB were below 250 mg-Al/kg-PHB, indicating the effect of residual aluminum on the characteristics of the purified PHB can be insignificant. When the dosage of coagulants was over 1000 mg-Al/L, the PHB recovery remarkably decreased with increasing the coagulant dosage. However, the PHB recovery could be enhanced by the use of 50% hypochlorite solution instead of 30% hypochlorite solution. Even though the reduction of PHB recovery efficiency was not found by using Fe-base coagulants, the purified PHB was stained pale red due to residual iron, These results suggest that the use of Al-base coagulants did not exert bad influence on neither PHB recovery efficiency and PHB purity.

Applications of lanthanum ion and crude rare earth chloride to the phosphate wastewater and fluorine wastewater, respectively, as treatment agents were studied. For the investigation of phosphate removal characteristics according to the amount of lanthanum ion, initial phosphate content was decreased by about 50% when molar ratio of [$La^{3+}$]:[$PO_4{^{3-}}-P$] was 0.25 and nearly all of phosphate was removed when the molar ratio of [$La^{3+}$]:[$PO_4{^{3-}}-P$] to be doubled. The removal of phosphate by $La^{3+}$ appeared to reach equilibrium state rapidly, and it was exothermic reaction since the removed amount of phosphate was diminished somewhat when the reaction temperature was increased. The zeta potential of combined particulate compound of lanthanum ion and phosphate was located for its isoelectric point at pH 5.5 and the turbidity of treated wastewater was found to vary according to the pH in a similar manner as the absolute value of zeta potential of the combined particulate compound did. For the treatment of fluorine wastewater by crude rare earth chloride, the remaining fluorine content after treatment decreased as the dosage of crude rare earth chloride increased. Whereas, the turbidity of treated wastewater and the amount of sludge generated were shown to increase as more crude rare earth chloride was added. The remaining fluorine content and the turbidity of treated wastewater were decreased and the amount of sludge generated was observed to increase according the increase of coagulant dosage under the condition of constant input of crude rare earth chloride.
Today, many problems of dye-processing wastewaters were raised due to industry of dyeing and textiles. It is difficult to treat them perfectly because they contain many poorly degradable matters, such as surfactants, ethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, and so on. To improve the performances of conventional physicochemical treatment and activated sludge process, new systems of combining jet-loop reactor (JLR) with physicochemical treatment were developed. Volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient ($k_{L}a$) of JLR was significantly larger than that of air-lift reactor. Also, for the effective treatment of dye-processing wastewater, JLR with active carbon supports (JLRAS) were investigated. Removal efficiency of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, $COD_{Cr} and color were found as 99, 86, 84, 83%, respectively, when HRT was 8 hrs. And performance of JLRAS was rapidly restored after step change of $COD_{Mn}$ loading late. The optimal coagulant and dosage of second physicochemical treatment after JLRAS were polyferric sulfate and 130 mg/L, respectively, when removal efficiencies of $COD_{Mn} and color were 85 and 73%, respectively. In conclusion, this system enables the reduction of operation cost, and the effective removal of many organics.
The Raw water from Deer Creek (DC) reservoir and Little Cottonwood Creek (LCC) reservoir in the Utah, USA were collected for jar test experiments. This study examined the removal of arsenic and turbidity by means of coagulation and flocculation processes using of aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride as coagulants for 13 jar tests. The jar tests were performed to determine the optimal pH range, alum concentration, ferric chloride concentration and polymer concentration for arsenic and turbidity removal. The results showed that a comparison was made between alum and ferric chloride as coagulant. Removal efficiency of arsenic and turbidity for alum (16 mg/L) of up to 79.6% and 90.3% at pH 6.5 respectively were observed. Removal efficiency of arsenic and turbidity for ferric chloride (8 mg/L) of up to 59.5% at pH 8 and 90.6% at pH 8 respectively were observed. Optimum arsenic and turbidity removal for alum dosages were achieved with a 25 mg/L and 16 mg/L respectively. Optimum arsenic and turbidity removal for ferric chloride dosages were achieved with a 20 mg/Land 8 mg/L respectively. In terms of minimizing the arsenic and turbidity levels, the optimum pH ranges were 6.5 and 8for alum and ferric chloride respectively. When a dosage of 2 mg/L of potassium permanganate and 8 mg/L of ferric chloride were employed, potassium permanganate can improve arsenic removal, but not turbidity removal.

This study was conducted to evaluate the removal behaviors of DOM(dissolved organic matter) and phosphorus in eutrophic lake water by coagulation process with PAC(powdered activated carbon). It was observed that the removal characteristic of soluble matter was different from that of dissolved one, and the removal of DOM was effected by both pH and coagulant dosage. It was founded that PAC could increase the removal efficiency by an adsorption of DOM in coagulation process. A formation of soluble and colloidal matters resulted in the degradation of phosphorus removal efficiency in a chemical precipitation process. The phosphorus removal efficiency could be enhanced by an absorption of colloidal matter and dissolved complex with PAC addition. In addition, the PAC addition caused the increase of floc density in coagulation process, that led to the rise of sedimentation rate, and resulted in a significant improvement of solid-liquid separation efficiency.

Coagulation influence was evaluated as the pretreatment for ultrafiltration. Coagulation was expected to improve water quality, reduce membrane fouling and increase backwash effect. Continuous operation of UF was employed in order to investigate the influence of coagulation. Alum, PACS and Ferric chloride were used as coagulants separately. From the result of the research, coagulation can improve the treated water quality greatly. Organic removal was increased more than turbidity and showed an improvement of 30.6% at most. All three coagulants presented conspicuous reduction of membrane fouling, among which PACS was the most effective with long term run. Backwash effect differed with different coagulants while Ferric chloride turned out to be the most effective one. The optimum dosage of coagulant resulted in the highest backwash efficiency.
Dissolution characteristics of magnesite ore in hydrochloric acid solution and removal of impurity were investigated. The dissolution yield increased with increasing temperature and with decreasing particle size. The optimum conditions for dissolution were found to be reaction period of 120 min, reaction temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ and mean particle size of 100. Under optimal dissolution condition the extraction of Mg was 98%. It was found that most of Si and Al exist in the residue, and they can be removed by filtering. Dissolved impurity ions were precipitated as metal hydroxides by pH adjustment. Polymers were used as coagulants for metal hydroxides and the suitable coagulant dosage was 1mg/100ml of non-ionic polymer.
Eutrophication and algal blooms can lead to increase of taste and odor compounds and health problems by cyanobacterial toxins. To cope with these eco-social issues, Ministry of Environment in Korea has been reinforcing the effluent standards of wastewater treatment facilities. As a result, various advanced phosphorus removal processes have been adopted in each wastewater treatment plant nation-widely. However, a lot of existing advanced wastewater treatment processes have been facing the problems of expensive cost in operation and excessive sludge production caused by high dosage of coagulant. In this study, the sedimentation and dissolved air flotation (SeDAF) process integrated with sedimentation and flotation has been developed for enhanced phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment facilities. Design and operating parameters of the SeDAF process with the capacity of 100 ㎥/d were determined, and a demonstration plant has been installed and operated at I wastewater treatment facility (located in Gyeonggi-do) for the verification of field applicability. Several empirical evaluations for the SeDAF process were performed at demonstration-plant scale, and the results showed clearly that T-P and turbidity values of treated water were to satisfy the highest effluent standards below 0.2 mg/L and 2.0 NTU stably for all of operation cases.

This paper is a result of research conducted on the 800,000 m3/d capacity of A Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and 400,000 m3/d capacity of B WTP plant in operation in the Nakdong River region. We evaluated the effect of algae broom on the WTP operation based on the running data of both WTP and the data on the pre-oxidation process field test for algae control using sodium permanganate (SPM) at the B WTP. The study results showed that during the algal bloom period, the coagulant dose increased by 102% in A WTP and 58% in B WTP, respectively, and the chlorine dose also increased by 38% and 29%, respectively, which may affect Total trihalomethane (THM) production. Data such as algal populations and Chl-a, residual chlorine and THM, algal populations, and ozone dose appeared also highly correlated, confirming that algal broom affects WTP operations, including water quality and chemical dosage. As a result of the field test of B WTP, THMs appeared lower than that of the control, suggesting the possibility of the SPM pre-oxidation process as an alternative to algae-related water quality management. Furthermore, in terms of GHG emissions due to energy consumption, it was observed that the pre-oxidation process using SPM was approximately 10.8%, which is a very low ratio compared to the pre-ozonation process. Therefore, these results suggest that the SPM pre-oxidation process can be recommended as an alternative to low-carbon water purification technology.
