  • The feasibility of Y(z) curve method of scanning acoustic microscope using high frequency transducer was experimentally studied for assessment of the thermal degradation in Co-based superalloy. Thermal degradation was performed to simulate the microstructural changes in Co-based superalloy arising from long term exposure at high temperature. Longitudinal wave velocity measured by pulse echo method using 10MHz transducer and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity measured by V(z) curve method using 200MHE transducer were measured to investigate the effect on thermal degradation. Ultrasonic velocity decreased as the aging time increased in both ultrasonic waves. Moreover, the low frequency longitudinal wave velocity decreased a little. Otherwise, the high frequency LSAW velocity drastically decreased up to a maximum of 4.7% at the aging time of 4,000hours. A good correlation was found between LSAW and Vickers hardness. Consequently, V(z) curve method of SAM using high frequency transducer could be a potential tool for assessing thermal degradation.

  • Ni base superalloys are composed of solid sohltion hardening elements(Co, Cr. Mo. W and so on) and $\gamma '$ precipitation hardening elements(A1, Ti, Nb, Ta and so on). To Improve the mechanical properties and oxidation resistanre of superalloys, rare earth elements(%r, Hf, Y and so on) are added to the inner substrate, or are used as coating materials. Their pffects on the growth rate and adhes~on of oxide are changed according to the kinds of oxides such as $AI_2O_3$ and $Cr_2O_3$. The effect of yttrium on the oxidation rate, grain size of oxide, internal structure, and crack resistance was investigated for two kinds of Ni-base superalloys. One in AF'115 superalloy containing Hf and the other is MA6000 superalloy containing $Y_2O_3$. They werr owid~zed at high temperature after yttrium surface modification using ion coater. Yttrium coating on the AF115 and MA6000 superalloys results in a marked change in the growth of the inner oxide. For AF115 superalloy, the degree of gram boundary segregation of $Cr_2O_3$, and prefer en^ tial oxidation of Hf are decreased, and the shape of inner oxidation layer was changed from triangle to plate type. For MA6000 superalloy, $Cr_2O_3$ oxide scale was transformed as outer oxidation layer of CrZOI and inner oxidation layer of $Cr_2O_3$.

  • In this study, the Ni base superalloy was recycled by Argon oxygen decarburization(AOD) process using an inconel 713C scrap. During AOD process, argon gas was continuously injected 1,000 sccm and oxygen gas was injected into 10, 20 and 30 minutes of 100, 250 and 500 sccm.. In early stage of oxygen injection, the oxygen dose increased with increasing Al, Cr, and Mo content and decreasing C content. And Al content was decreased by carburization with added elements in late stage Because of oxidation was occurred with Al, Cr etc. after the reaction of carbon has been finished. From the results, the ratio of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase reduced due to decreasing of Al content for that reason Al is the main element to form the ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase. Also carbide reduced owing to decreasing of C content so the mechanical properties of the specimens excessively injected by excess $O_2$ gas were decreased.

  • The rotating components in the hot sections of land-based gas turbine are exposed to severe environments during several tens thousand operation hours at above $1100^{\circ}C$ operation temperature. To protect such components from high temperature oxidation, an intermediate bond coat is applied, typical of a MCrAlY-type metal alloy. This study is concerned with the thermal cyclic behavior of thermal barrier coatings. The MCrAlY bond coatings are deposited by HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) method on a nickel-based superalloy (GTD-111). Thermal cyclic tests at $1100^{\circ}C$ in ambient air for various periods of time were used to evaluate the thermal cyclic resistance of the TBC coating. The microstructure and morphology of as-sprayed and of thermal cycled coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

  • An attempt was made to evaluate creep reliability of two commercial Ni-based superalloys by using ultrasonic wave. The materials include fine-grained PM alloy fabricated by mechanical alloying and subsequent hot isostatic pressing, and IN738LC cast alloy with a grain size of a few cm. Microstructural parameters (fraction of creep cavity and size of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitates) and ultrasonic parameters (velocity, attenuation) were measured to try to find relationships between them. Ultrasonic velocity decreased with creep cavity formation in PM alloy. On the other hand, no distinct changing trend of ultrasonic velocity was observed for IN738LC alloy. Ultrasonic attenuation was found to have a linear correlation with the size of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitates and was suggested as a potential parameter for monitoring creep reliability of IN738LC alloy.

  • This study investigates changes in the mechanical behavior, such as changes in indentation load-displacement curve, wear resistance and contact fatigue resistance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by thermal cycling test and thermal shock test. Relatively dense and porous TBCs on nickel-based bondcoat/superalloy are prepared; the highest temperature applied during thermal durability test is $1350^{\circ}C$. The results indicate that the porous TBCs have relatively longer lifetime during thermal cycling and thermal shock tests, while denser TBCs have relatively higher wear and contact fatigue resistance. The mechanical behavior is influenced by sintering of the TBCs by exposure to high temperature during tests.

  • Incoloy alloy 909 is an Fe-Ni-Co based superalloy that is attractive for gas turbine engine applications. The absence of chromium, however, makes the alloy more susceptible to oxidation in high temperature. To improve the oxidation resistance aluminizing was performed by high activity low temperature pack cementation process. Aluminizing condition was examined with different times and temperatures. Optimum aluminizing conditions were at the temperature of $552^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs. In the optimized condition, the thickness of the aluminized layer was about $20{\mu}m$. Also, the aluminized layer made the alloy to increase the resistance to the corrosion.

  • The effects of a heat treatment on the carbide formation behavior and mechanical properties of the cobalt-based superalloy X-45 were investigated here. Coarse primary carbides formed in the interdendritic region in the as-cast specimen, along with the precipitation of fine secondary carbides in the vicinity of the primary carbides. Most of the carbides formed in the interdendritic region were dissolved into the matrix by a solution treatment at $1274^{\circ}C$. Solutionizing at $1150^{\circ}C$ led to the dissolution of some carbides at the grain boundaries, though this also caused the precipitation of fine carbides in the vicinity of coarse primary carbides. A solution treatment followed by an aging treatment at $927^{\circ}C$ led to the precipitation of fine secondary carbides in the interdendritic region. Very fine carbides were precipitated in the dendritic region by an aging heat treatment at $927^{\circ}C$ and $982^{\circ}C$ without a solution treatment. The hardness value of the alloy solutionized at $1150^{\circ}C$ was somewhat higher than that in the as-cast condition; however, various aging treatments did not strongly influence the hardness value. The specimens as-cast and aged at $927^{\circ}C$ showed the highest hardness values, though they were not significantly affected by the aging time. The specimens aged only at $982^{\circ}C$ showed outstanding tensile and creep properties. Thermal exposure at high temperatures for 8000 hours led to the precipitation of carbide at the center of the dendrite region and an improvement of the creep rupture lifetimes.

  • An Fe-Ni-Co based superalloy Incoloy 909 (Incoloy 909) has been used for gas turbine engine component material. This alloy is susceptible to high temperature oxidation and corrosion because of the absence of corrosion resistant Cr. For the improvement of durability of the component of Incoloy 909 aluminizing-chromate coating by pack cementation process has been investigated at relatively low temperature of about $550^{\circ}C$ to protect the surface microstructure and properties of Incoloy 909 substrate. As a previous study to aluminizing-chromate coating by pack cementation of Incoloy 909, the optimal aluminizing process has been investigated. The size effects of source Al powder and inert filler $Al_O_3$ powder and activator selection have been studied. And the dependence of coating growth rate on aluminizing temperature and time has also been studied. The optimal aluminizing process for the coating growth rate is that the mixing ratio of source Al powder, activator $NH_4Cl$ and filler $Al_O_3$ are 80%, 1% and 19% respectively at aluminizing temperature $552^{\circ}C$ and time 20 hours.

  • Alloy 617 is a candidate Ni-based superalloy for intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) of a high-temperature gas reactor (VHTR), because of its good creep strength and corrosion resistance at high temperature. Small amount of impurities such as $H_2O$, $H_2$, CO and $CH_4$ are introduced inevitably in helium, as a coolant during operation of a VHTR. Reactions of material and impurities are accelerated with increase of temperature to $950^{\circ}C$ of operating temperature of a VHTR, leading to material corrosion aggravation. In this circumstance, high-temperature corrosion tests were performed at $950^{\circ}C$ in air and impure helium environments, up to 250 hours in this study. Oxidation rate of $950^{\circ}C$ in an air environment was higher than that of impure helium, explained by difference in outer oxide morphology and microstructure as a function of oxygen partial pressure. An equiaxed Cr-rich surface oxide layer was formed in an air environment, and a columnar Cr-rich oxide was formed in an impure helium environment.
