We present a study of five open clusters (Alessi 53, Berkeley 49, Berkeley 84, Czernik 5, Pfleiderer 3) based on ugriz images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Physical properties of these clusters are not yet well known. The center and size of these clusters are determined using the radial number density profile. Using the proper motion data, we select the members of the target clusters. We estimate physical parameters of the clusters based on the isochrone fitting in the Color-Magnitude Diagram (CMD) : reddening, distance, and age. The foreground reddening is determined to be E(B-V)=0.71-1.55 mag. The distances to target clusters are derived to be 2.0-4.4 kpc, corresponding to the galactocentric distances of 7.5-11.9 kpc. Their ages are in the range of 280 to 1000 Myr. Their spatial distribution in our Galaxy is similar to that of other intermediate-age open clusters. We find ten blue straggler star candidates in Berkeley 49. This number of blue stragglers is a typical value for the age of Berkeley 49.
A dwarf irregular galaxy IC10 in the Local Group is the nearest starburst galaxy, playing an important role revealing the details of starburst. It is located close to the Galactic plane so that it suffers from severe foreground reddening. Therefore much less is known about the property of this galaxy compared with other galaxies in the Local Group. So are star clusters in this galaxy. We present a photometric study of the star clusters in IC10. 57 star clusters are already found from HST images in previous studies, and we newly found 15 star clusters using Local Group Survey data and SUBARU/Suprime-Cam data. We derive UBVRI integrated photometry of these star clusters from the images from Local Group Survey data and JHKs photometry taken with SUBARU/MOIRCS. Then we derive age and mass of these clusters using the spectral energy distribution fitting with the simple stellar population models. We discuss the photometric and physical properties of these star clusters and its implication.
We discovered 722 open clusters within 1 kpc using Gaia DR2 data. These clusters are detected in the proper motion space and confirmed on the spatial distribution with parallax information. We divided the 3628 regions and visually searched using python program. Among 722 open clusters, 430 clusters are previously unknown clusters. Catalogue of discovered clusters is unloaded on the online catalogue at https://radio.kasi.re.kr/project/shlee/. Owing to the good membership criteria, we could see the halo structure of the clusters. In that reason, the average size of the discovered cluster is about 9 times than that of previously known clusters.
We present a photometric study of five open clusters (Czernik 5, Alessi 53, Berkeley 49, Berkeley 84, and Pfleiderer 3) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The position and size of these clusters are determined using the radial number density profiles of the stars, and the member stars of the clusters are selected using the proper motion data in the literature. We estimate the reddening, distance and age of the clusters based on the isochrone fitting in the color-magnitude diagram. The foreground reddenings for these clusters are estimated to be E(B - V ) = 0.71 - 1.55 mag. The distances to these clusters are derived to be 2.0 - 4.4 kpc, and their distances from the Galactic center range from 7.57 kpc to 12.35 kpc. Their ages are in the range from 250 Myr to 1 Gyr. Berkeley 49 and Berkeley 84 are located in the Orion spur, Czernik 5 is in the Perseus arm, and Pfleiderer 3 and Alessi 53 are located beyond the Perseus arm.
Over the last few years, the data obtained using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has provided new insights on high-energy processes in globular clusters, particularly those involving compact objects such as MilliSecond Pulsars (MSPs). Gamma-ray emission in the 100 MeV to 10 GeV range has been detected from more than a dozen globular clusters in our galaxy, including 47 Tucanae and Terzan 5. Based on a sample of known gammaray globular clusters, the empirical relations between gamma-ray luminosity and properties of globular clusters such as their stellar encounter rate, metallicity, and possible optical and infrared photon energy densities, have been derived. The measured gamma-ray spectra are generally described by a power law with a cut-off at a few gigaelectronvolts. Together with the detection of pulsed γ-rays from two MSPs in two different globular clusters, such spectral signature lends support to the hypothesis that γ-rays from globular clusters represent collective curvature emission from magnetospheres of MSPs in the clusters. Alternative models, involving Inverse-Compton (IC) emission of relativistic electrons that are accelerated close to MSPs or pulsar wind nebula shocks, have also been suggested. Observations at >100 GeV by using Fermi/LAT and atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes such as H.E.S.S.-II, MAGIC-II, VERITAS, and CTA will help to settle some questions unanswered by current data.
Objectives: This study was to examine by gender the clustering patterns and correlates of healthy lifestyle clusters and the relationships between healthy lifestyle clusters and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: The observed/expected ratio of physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption were calculated to analyze clustering effects. The correlates of those healthy lifestyle clusters were evaluated using logistic regression models, and the relationship between those healthy lifestyle clusters and depressive symptoms was investigated using multiple regressions by gender. Results: Based on the guidelines this study adopted, we obtained three healthy lifestyle clusters: active healthy lifestyle; passive healthy lifestyle; and unhealthy lifestyle. All three clusters were found in men, but two in women, who did not have an unhealthy lifestyle cluster. High socio-economic status was positively related to healthy lifestyle clusters. Social participation and residence location (in men) and marital status (in women) were significant factors. Having an active or a passive healthy lifestyle was negatively associated with depressive symptoms in women, but such a relationship was not observed in men. Conclusions: The study findings imply that health promotion programs for middle-aged and older adults in Korea should be comprehensive and integrated, considering healthy lifestyle clusters and gender differences.
We use B band CCD images to investigate the surface brightness distributions and dynamical properties of 29 Galactic globular clusters. Model fits suggest that 22 clusters show King type surface brightness profiles, while 7 clusters are characterized by power law cusp profiles. For the King type clusters, concentration parameters $(c=log(r_{t}/r_{c}))$ range from 1.20 to 2.10, and core radii are 0.4 to 1.9 pc. The mean value of power law slopes of 7 cuspy clusters was estimated as ${alpha}=1.011{\pm}0.065$. Total masses of King type globular clusters are in the range of $1.7{ imes}10^4M_{odot}$ to $1.0{\times}106M_{\odot}$ with a mean of $1.7{\times}10^5M_{\odot}$. A significant positive correlation between mass and mass-to-light ratio of King type globular clusters has been confirmed with a Pearson's correlation coefficient r = 0.52 and a confidence level of 99%. Our data also confirm a linear relation between total mass and absolute magnitude of King type globular clusters.
We present a photometric study of the star cluster system in the merging galaxy NGC 1487, based on the BI photometry obtained from the F450W and F814W images in the HST /WFPC2 archive data. We have found about 560 star cluster candidates in NGC 1487, using the morphological parameters of the objects. We have investigated several photometric characteristics of the clusters: color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), color distribution, spatial distribution, age, size and luminosity function. The CMD of the bright clusters with 18.5 < B < 24 mag in NGC 1487 shows three major populations of clusters: a blue cluster population with $(B-I){\le}0.45$, an intermediate-color cluster population with $0.45<(B-I){\le}1.55$, and a red cluster population with (B - I) > 1.55. The intermediate-color population is the most dominant among the three populations. The brightest clusters in the blue and intermediate- color populations are as bright as $B{\approx}18mag$ ($M_B{\approx}-12mag$), which are three magnitudes brighter than those in the red population. The blue and intermediate-color clusters are strongly concentrated on the bright condensations, while the red clusters are relatively more scattered over the galaxy. The CMD of these clusters is found to be remarkably similar to that of the clusters in the famous interacting system M51. From this we suggest that the intermediate-color clusters were, probably, formed during the merging process which occurred about 500 Myrs ago.
We present a photometric study of star clusters in the nuclear starburst region of NGC 253 using gVI, YJ, and H band images in the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We find about one thousand star clusters in about 200"x200" field by visual inspection with I<21. We also find about ten thousand star clusters in the same field by automated classification method with magnitude range of 21< I $$\leq_-$$ 24. Ages and masses of star clusters are estimated using spectral energy distribution fitting method. Age distribution of star cluster shows two distinguished young populations with peak ages at 3.5 Myr and 18 Myr. Old populations (>100 Myr) are exist, but their number is small. About thirty young massive star clusters (<10 Myr, ) are found in nuclear region of NGC 253 which are regarded as a result of the recent starburst. Mass function of young star clusters in NGC 253 is somewhat different with those of star clusters in other galaxies. This result suggests that initial cluster mass functions (ICMFs) for star clusters are not universial. Especially ICMF in starburst galaxies may be distinguishable compared with those in normal spiral galaxies. We discuss the implications of these results.
We present a photometric study of star clusters in three nearby barred spiral galaxies NGC 1300, NGC 1672 and NGC 6217. We use the Hubble Heritage CCD images taken with Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in several filters. We have selected hundreds of star clusters with V $\leq$ 24 mag in each galaxy, based on the morphological parameters and visual inspection. Most of the blue star clusters with B-V $\leq$ 0.5 are strongly concentrated in spiral arms. A significant fraction of these star clusters are distributed in ansae (the joint between spiral arms and bar structure). Some of the blue star clusters are also found in the nuclear starburst region, especially in NGC 1672. A small number of star clusters are found in the bar region. In contrast, the red star clusters with B-V < 0.5 are relatively uniformly located over the entire field of galaxy, and show some central concentration around the bulge. We discuss the physical properties of these star clusters with the expected results from simulations.
