Efficient energy consumption in WSN is one of the key design issues for improving network stability period. In this paper, we propose a new Heterogeneity-aware Energy-efficient Clustering (HEC) technique which considers two types of heterogeneity - network lifetime and of sensor nodes. Selection of cluster head nodes is done based on the three network lifetime phases: only advanced nodes are allowed to become cluster heads in the initial phase; in the second active phase all nodes are allowed to participate in cluster head selection process with equal probability, and in the last dying out phase, clustering is relaxed by allowing direct transmission. Simulation-based performance analysis of the proposed technique as compared to other relevant techniques shows that HEC achieves longer stable region, improved throughput, and better energy dissipation owing to judicious consumption of additional energy of advanced nodes. On an average, the improvement observed for stability period over LEACH, SEP, FAIR and HEC- with SEP protocols is around 65%, 30%, 15% and 17% respectively. Further, the scalability of proposed technique is tested by varying the field size and number of sensing nodes. The results obtained are found to be quite optimistic. The impact of energy heterogeneity has also been assessed and it is found to improve the stability period though only upto a certain extent.

Designing of a hierarchical clustering algorithm is one of the numerous approaches to minimize the energy consumption of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this paper, a homogeneous and randomly deployed sensor nodes is considered. These sensors are energy constrained elements. The nominal selection of the Cluster Head (CH) which falls under the clustering part of the network protocol is studied and compared to Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. CHs in this proposed process is the function of total remaining energy of each node as well as total average energy of the whole arrangement. The algorithm considers initial energy, optimum value of cluster heads to elect the next group of cluster heads for the network as well as residual energy. Total remaining energy of each node is compared to total average energy of the system and if the result is positive, these nodes are eligible to become CH in the very next round. Analysis and numerical simulations quantify the efficiency and Average Energy Ratio (AER) of the proposed system.

Research on wireless sensor networks has focused on the monitoring and characterization of large-scale physical environments and the tracking of various environmental or physical conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and wind speed. We propose a stochastic mobility model that can be applied to a MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc NETwork). environment, and apply this mobility model to a newly proposed clustering-based routing protocol. To verify its stability and durability, we compared the proposed stochastic mobility model with a random model in terms of energy efficiency. The FND (First Node Dead) was measured and compared to verify the performance of the newly designed protocol. In this paper, we describe the proposed mobility model, quantify the changes to the mobile environment, and detail the selection of cluster heads and clusters formed using a fuzzy inference system. After the clusters are configured, the collected data are sent to a base station. Studies on clustering-based routing protocols and stochastic mobility models for MANET applications have shown that these strategies improve the energy efficiency of a network.

Efficient energy consumption is a critical factor for deployment and operation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To achieve energy efficiency there have been several hierarchical routing protocols that organize sensors into clusters where one sensor is a cluster-head to forward messages received from its cluster-member sensors to the base station of the WSN. In this paper, we propose a self-organized clustering method for cluster-head selection and cluster based routing for a WSN. To select cluster-heads and organize clustermembers for each cluster, every sensor uses only local information and simple decision mechanisms which are aimed at configuring a self-organized system. By these self-organized interactions among sensors and selforganized selection of cluster-heads, the suggested method can form clusters for a WSN and decide routing paths energy efficiently. We compare our clustering method with a clustering method that is a well known routing protocol for the WSNs. In our computational experiments, we show that the energy consumptions and the lifetimes of our method are better than those of the compared method. The experiments also shows that the suggested method demonstrate properly some self-organized properties such as robustness and adaptability against uncertainty for WSN's.

Centralized hierarchical routing protocols are often used to solve the problems of uneven energy consumption and short network life in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Clustering and cluster head election have become the focuses of WSNs. In this paper, an energy balanced clustering routing algorithm optimized by sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is proposed. Firstly, optimal cluster head number per round is determined according to surviving node, and the candidate cluster head set is formed by selecting high-energy node. Secondly, a random population with a certain scale is constructed to represent a group of cluster head selection scheme, and fitness function is designed according to inter-cluster distance. Thirdly, the SCA algorithm is improved by using monotone decreasing convex function, and then a certain number of iterations are carried out to select a group of individuals with the minimum fitness function value. From simulation experiments, the process from the first death node to 80% only needs about 30 rounds. This improved algorithm balances the energy consumption among nodes and avoids premature death of some nodes. And it greatly improves the energy utilization and extends the effective life of the whole network.

Recently, there are tendency that wireless sensor network is one of the important techniques for the future IT industry and thereby application areas in it are getting growing. Researches based on the hierarchical network topology are evaluated in good at energy efficiency in related protocols for wireless sensor network. LEACH is the best well known routing protocol for the hierarchical topology. However, there are problems in the range of message broadcasting, which should be expand into the overall network coverage, in LEACH related protocols. Thereby, this paper proposes a new clustering scheme to solve the co-shared problems in them. The basic idea of our scheme is using the inherent memory restrictions in sensor nodes. The results show that the proposed scheme could support the load balancing by distributing the clusters with a reasonable number of member nodes and thereby the network life time would be extended in about 1.8 times longer than LEACH.
Maintenance Access Hatches are used to ensure urban safety and aesthetics while facilitating the management of power lines, telecommunication lines, and gas pipes. Such facilities necessitate affordable and effective surveillance. In this paper, we propose a FiCHS (Fixed Cluster head centralized Hierarchical Static clustering) routing protocol that is suitable for underground maintenance hatches using WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) technology. FiCHS is compared with three other protocols, LEACH, LEACH-C, and a simplified LEACH, based on an ns-2 simulation. FiCHS was observed to exhibit the highest levels of power and data transfer efficiency.

In resource constrained sensor networks, usage of efficient routing protocols can have significant impact on energy dissipation. To save energy, we propose an energy efficient routing protocol. In our approach, which integrates clustering and routing in sensor networks, we perform network coding during data routing in order to achieve additional power savings in the cluster head nodes. Efficacy of the proposed method in terms of the throughput and end-to-end delay is demonstrated through simulation results. Significant network lifetime is also achieved as compared with other techniques.

Maintaining efficient energy consumption and elongating network lifetime are the key issues in wireless sensor networks. Existing routing protocols usually select the cluster heads based on the proximity to the sensor nodes. In this case the cluster heads can be placed farther to the base station, than the distance between the sensor nodes and the base station, which yields inefficient energy consumption. In this work we propose a novel algorithm that select the nodes in a cluster and the cluster heads based on the locations of related nodes. We verify that the proposed algorithm gives better performance in terms of network life time than existing solutions.
Recently, lot of researches on multi-level protocol have been done to balance the sensor node energy consumption of WSN and to improve the node efficiency to extend the life of the entire network. Especially in multi-hop protocol, a variety of models have been studied to improve energy efficiency and apply it in real system. In multi-hop protocol, we assume that energy consumption can be adjusted based on the distance between the sensor nodes. However, according to the physical property of the actual WSN, it's hard to establish this. In this paper, we propose low-power sub-cluster protocol to improve the energy efficiency based on the spread of distance. Compared with the previous protocols, the proposed protocol is energy efficient and can be effectively used in the wireless sensing network.
