The existing ad hoc network protocols suffer the scalability problem due to the inherent characteristics of node mobility. Cluster-based routing protocols divide the member nodes into a set of clusters and perform a hierarchical routing between these clusters. This hierarchical feature help to improve the scalability of ad hoc network routing. However, previous k-hop cluster-based routing protocols face another problems, that is, control overhead of the cluster headers. This paper proposes a novel k-hop cluster-based routing scheme with delegation functions for mobile ad hoc networks. The scheme employs is based on tree topology to manage cluster members in effectively. The cluster headers do not manage the routing table for whole members, while the header keeps the routing table for its neighbor members and the member list for one hop over nodes within k-hop cluster. Then the in-between leveled nodes manage the nested nodes which is structured in the lower level. Therefore, the proposed mechanism can reduce some control overhead of the cluster leaders.
With the recent advances in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology, low cost and low power consumption wireless micro sensor nodes have become available. However, energy-efficient routing is one of the most important key technologies in wireless sensor networks as sensor nodes are highly energy-constrained. Therefore, many researchers have proposed routing protocols for sensor networks, especially cluster-based routing protocols, which have many advantages such as reduced control messages, bandwidth re-usability, and improved power control. Some protocols use information on the locations of sensor nodes to construct clusters efficiently. However, it is rare that all sensor nodes know their positions. In this article, we propose another cluster-based routing protocol for sensor networks. This protocol does not use information concerning the locations of sensor nodes, but uses the remaining energy of sensor networks and the desirable number of cluster heads according to the circumstances of the sensor networks. From performance simulation, we found that the proposed protocol shows better performance than the low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH).

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are infrastructure-less, autonomous, and stand-alone wireless networks with dynamic topologies. Recently, cluster-based ad hoc networks which enhance the security and efficiency of ad hoc networks are being actively researched. And routing protocols for cluster-based ad hoc networks are also studied. However, there are few studies about secure routing protocols in cluster-based ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose secure routing protocol for cluster-based ad hoc networks. We use Diffie-Hellman key agreement, HMAC, and digital signature to support integrity of routing messages, and finally can perform secure routing.
A wireless sensor network communication technique has been broadly studied with continuous advances in ubiquitous computing environment. Especially, because the resource of the sensor node is limited, it is important to reduce the communication energy by using an energy-efficient routing protocol. The existing cluster-based routing protocols have a problem that they cannot select a cluster head efficiently by randomly choosing a head. In addition, because the existing cluster-based routing protocols do not support the large scale of network, they cannot be used for various applications. To solve the above problems, we, in this paper, propose a new cluster-based routing protocol using representative paths. The proposed protocol constructs an efficient cluster with distributed cluster heads by creating representative paths based on hop count. In addition, a new routing protocol supports multi-hop routing for data communication between a cluster member node and a cluster head as well as between cluster heads. Finally, we show that our protocol outperforms LEACH and Multihop-LEACH in terms of reliability and scalability.

Nuclear power plants have a lower cost of power generation, and they are more eco-friendly than other power generation plants. Also, we need to prepare nuclear plant accidents because of their severe damage. In the event of a safety accident, such as a radiation leak, by applying a wireless sensor network to a nuclear power plant, many sensor nodes can be used to monitor radiation and transmit information to an external base station to appropriately respond to the accident. However, applying a wireless sensor network to nuclear power plants requires routing protocols that consider the sensor network size and bypass obstacles such as plant buildings. In general, the hierarchical-based routing protocols are efficient in energy consumption. In this study, we look into the problems that may occur if hierarchical-based routing protocols are applied to nuclear power plants and propose improved routing protocols to solve these problems. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol is more effective in energy consumption than the existing LEACH protocol.

Establishing a fixed path for the message delivery through a wireless network is impossible due to the mobility. Among the number of routing protocols that have been proposed for wireless ad-hoc networks, the AODV(Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector) algorithm is suitable in the case of highly dynamic topology changes, along with ZigBee Routing(ZBR), with the exception of route maintenance. Accordingly, this paper introduces a routing scheme focusing on the energy efficiency and route discovery time for wireless alarm systems using IEEE 802.15.4-based ZigBee. Essentially, the proposed routing algorithm utilizes a cluster structure and applies ZBR within a cluster and DSR (Dynamic Source Routing) between clusters. The proposed algorithm does not require a routing table for the cluster heads, as the inter-cluster routing is performed using DSR. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated and compared with ZBR using an NS2 simulator. The results confirm that the proposed Cluster-based AODV (CAODV) algorithm is more efficient than ZBR in terms of the route discovery time and energy consumption.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are becoming increasingly attractive for a variety of applications and have become a hot research area. Routing is a key technology in WSNs and can be coarsely divided into two categories: flat routing and hierarchical routing. In a flat topology, all nodes perform the same task and have the same functionality in the network. In contrast, nodes in a hierarchical topology perform different tasks in WSNs and are typically organized into lots of clusters according to specific requirements or metrics. Owing to a variety of advantages, clustering routing protocols are becoming an active branch of routing technology in WSNs. In this paper, we present an overview on clustering routing algorithms for WSNs with focus on differentiating them according to diverse cluster shapes. We outline the main advantages of clustering and discuss the classification of clustering routing protocols in WSNs. In particular, we systematically analyze the typical clustering routing protocols in WSNs and compare the different approaches based on various metrics. Finally, we conclude the paper with some open questions.

In this paper, we propose a new hybrid type of the routing protocol (Virtual Cluster-based Routing Protocol: VCRP) for mobile ad-hoc networks, based on a virtual cluster, which is defined as a narrow-sense network to exchange the basic information related to the routing among the adjacent nodes. This particular approach combines advantage of proactive routing protocol (PRP), which immediately provides the route collecting the network-wide topological and metric information, with that of reactive routing protocol, which relies on the route query packet to collect the route information on its way to the destination without exchanging any information between nodes. Furthermore, it also provides the back-up route as a byproduct, along with the optimal route, which leads to the VCBRP (Virtual Cluster-based Routing Protocol with Backup Route) establishing the alternative route immediately after a network topology is changed due to degradation of link quality and terminal mobility, Our simulation studies have shown that the proposed routing protocols are robust against dynamics of network topology while improving the performances of packet transfer delay, link failure ratio, and throughput over those of the existing routing protocols without much compromising the control overhead efficiency.

For an energy harvesting sensor network, when the network lifetime is not the only primary goal, maximizing the network performance under environmental energy harvesting becomes a more critical issue. However, clustering protocols that aim at providing maximum information throughput have not been thoroughly explored in Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks (EH-WSNs). In this paper, clustering protocols are studied for maximizing the data transmission in the whole network. Based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) energy predictor and node energy consumption and supplement models, an uneven clustering protocol is proposed where the cluster head selection and cluster size control are thoroughly designed for this purpose. Simulations and results verify that the proposed scheme can outperform some classic schemes by having more data packets received by the cluster heads (CHs) and the base station (BS) under these energy constraints. The outcomes of this paper also provide some insights for choosing clustering routing protocols in EH-WSNs, by exploiting the factors such as uneven clustering size, number of clusters, multiple CHs, multihop routing strategy, and energy supplementing period.

Recently, multicast routing protocols become increasingly important aspect in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs), as they effectively manage group communications. Meanwhile, multimedia and real-time applications are becoming essential need for users of MANET. Thus it is necessary to design efficient and effective Quality of Service (QoS) multicast routing strategies. In this paper, we address the scalability problem of multicast routing protocols to support QoS over MANETs. In particular, we introduce a Position-Based QoS Multicast Routing Protocol (PBQMRP). Basically, the protocol based on dividing the network area into virtual hexagonal cells. Then, the location information is exploited to perform efficient and scalable route discovery. In comparison with other existing QoS multicast routing protocols, PBQMRP incurs less control packets by eliminating network flooding behavior. Through simulation, the efficiency and scalability of PBQMRP are evaluated and compared with the well-known On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). Simulation results justify that our protocol has better performance, less control overhead and higher scalability.
