Satellite observed brightness temperature simulation using a radiative transfer model (here after, RTM) is useful for various fields, for example sensor design and channel selection by using theoretically calculated radiance data, development of satellite data processing algorithm and algorithm parameter determination before launch. This study is focused on elaborating the simulation procedure, and analyzing of difference between observed and modelled clear sky brightness temperatures. For the CMDPS (COMS Meteorological Data Processing System) development, the simulated clear sky brightness temperatures are used to determine whether the corresponding pixels are cloud-contaminated in cloud mask algorithm as a reference data. Also it provides important information for calibrating satellite observed radiances. Meanwhile, simulated brightness temperatures of COMS channels plan to be used for assessing the CMDPS performance test. For these applications, the RTM requires fast calculation and high accuracy. The simulated clear sky brightness temperatures are compared with those of MTSAT-1R observation to assess the model performance and the quality of the observation. The results show that there is good agreement in the ocean mostly, while in the land disagreement is partially found due to surface characteristics such as land surface temperature, surface vegetation, terrain effect, and so on.

The Ka-band cloud radar (KCR) has been operated by the National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at Boseong National Center for Intensive Observation of severe weather since 2013. Evaluation of data quality is an essential process to further analyze cloud information. In this study, we estimate the measurement error and the sampling uncertainty to evaluate data quality. By using vertically pointing data, the statistical uncertainty is obtained by calculating the standard deviation of each radar parameter. The statistical uncertainties decrease as functions of sampling number. The statistical uncertainties of horizontal and vertical reflectivities are identical (0.28 dB). On the other hand, the statistical uncertainties of Doppler velocity (spectrum width) are 2.2 times (1.6 times) larger at the vertical channel. The reflectivity calibration of KCR is also performed using X-band vertically pointing radar (VertiX) and 2-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD). Since the monitoring of calibration values is useful to evaluate radar condition, the variation of calibration is monitored for five rain events. The average of calibration bias is 10.77 dBZ and standard deviation is 3.69 dB. Finally, the statistical characteristics of cloud properties have been investigated during two months in autumn using calibrated reflectivity. The percentage of clouds is about 26% and 16% on September to October. However, further analyses are required to derive general characteristics of autumn cloud in Korea.
To well design the solar energy system using solar energy, the correlation to calculate solar irradiation is basically needed. So, this study was performed to reveal the relationships between the solar irradiation and four meteorological observation data(dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, sunshine duration, and cloud cover) which are different from previous other researches. And then, we finally proposed the first order non-linear correlation from the measured solar irradiation using four meteorological observation data with MINITAB. To show the deviation of the solar irradiation between measured and calculated, this study compared using the daily total solar irradiance and the maximum peak value. From those results, the calculation error was estimated about maximum 25.4% for the daily total solar irradiance. The error of the solar irradiation between measured and calculated was made from the curve fitting error. So, solar irradiation prediction correlation with higher accuracy can be obtained using 2nd or higher order terms with four meteorological observation data.
In astronomy, the amount of data generated using wide-field optical telescope has increased exponentially. However, the fixed-size small-scale computing environment and the complexity of data analysis tools, results in difficulties to process the massive observation data collected. To resolve this problem, we propose a cloud-based automation system for the efficient processing of the enormous data gathered. The proposed system consists of a Workflow Execution Manager which manages various workflow templates and controls the execution of workflows instantiated from theses templates, and an Elastic Resource Manager that dynamically adds/deletes computing resources, according to the amount of data analysis requests. To show the effectiveness of our proposed system, we exhaustively explored a board spectrum of experiments, like elastic resources allocation, system load, etc. Finally, we describe the best practice case of DEEP-SOUTH scheduling system as an example application.
In this paper, we analyzed the physical and thermodynamic characteristics of fog by using the integrated water vapor (IWV) from Global Positioning System (GPS) networks and the regular observation data of meteorological stations in GPS sites. The cases of a radiation and an advection fog were selected as samples, the conversions of water substance from the water vapor to cloud water in fog were detected by the Bulk Water-Continuity Model, and the pattern analysis is adapted on GPS IWV, temperature, wind and relative humidity. Under the specific hypothesis (saturation and stable), GPS IWV could detect quantitatively the phase changing between the water vapor and cloud water content with condensation/evaporation during the formation and dissipation of fog. After it reaches to the saturation, the relative humidity can be a limited indicator for fog. However, GPS IWV can detect the status change of fog even after the saturation. It has indicated that GPS IWV could be a new observing technique for the processes of the fog formation and the dissipation.
The characteristics of solar resources in South Korea were analyzed by comparing the solar irradiance derived from COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) with in-situ ground observation data (Pyranometer). Satellite-derived solar irradiance and in-situ observation showed general coincidence with correlation coefficient higher than 0.9, but the satellite observations tended to overestimate the radiation amount compared to the ground observations. Analysis of hourly and monthly irradiance showed that relatively large discrepancies between the satellite and ground observations exist after sunrise and during July~August period which were mainly attributed to uncertainties in the satellite retrieval such as large atmospheric optical thickness and cloud amount. But differences between the two observations did not show distinct diurnal or seasonal cycles. Analysis of regional characteristics of solar irradiance showed that differences between satellite and in-situ observations are relatively large in metrocity such as Seoul and coastal regions due to air pollution and sea salt aerosols which act to increase the uncertainty in the satellite retrieval. It was concluded that the satellite irradiance data can be used for assessment and prediction of solar energy resources overcoming the limitation of ground observations, although it still has various sources of uncertainty.
In order to study developments of the marine atmosphere boundary layer in cloud incoming, important parameters like heat advection, surface layer heat flux, and radiation energy were estimated using the rawinsonde, AWS data, satellite images, and buoy data which was installed at the East Sea. We explained the variation and the development of mixed layer in terms of surface layer heat flux and long wave radiation under the cloudy sky. The heat flux was obtained by means of the bulk method. Conservation of heat was analysed by heat budget equation, which was consist of buoy data in the East sea, and sounding data at Ulleungdo and at Pohang. During the inflow of cloud, radiative cooling at the surface after was suppressed and long wave radiation from cloud played a role of warming. The surface layer temperature was also remained warm by influence of warm advection from south-easterly direction. The air temperature in night was increased, as a result, mixed layer was not destroyed and The nocturnal boundary layer was composed of the mixed layer and the residual layer.

The molecular gas surrounding an H II region is thought to be a place where star formation can be induced. Such triggered star formation can arise form the overpressurization of existing density enhancements or thought the collapse of a swept up layers of material. In this talk, We will discuss the results of a study of star-formation activity associated with the outer Galaxy ring-shaped H II regions KR 7, KR 81, KR 120 and KR 140 using archival Spitzer and WISE data along with the JHK observations. We used CO data cubes from the FCRAO and TRAO in order to define extent of the molecular cloud associated each HII region. Using the infrared data sets, We identified and classified YSO populations within each molecular cloud using measures such as the class I/II ratio and YSO spatial density. Along with this, one of the main question in the study of star formation is how protostar accrete material from their parent molecular clouds and observations of infall motions are needed to provide direct evidence for accretion. Combining our observation of the YSO population distribution with time scales associated with YSO evolution and HII expansion, we investigated the possible significance of triggered star formation in the molecular cloud surrounding each region.
A Land cover map over East Asian region (Kongju national university Land Cover map: KLC) is classified by using support vector machine (SVM) and evaluated with ground truth data. The basic input data are the recent three years (2006-2008) of MODIS (MODerate Imaging Spectriradiometer) NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) data. The spatial resolution and temporal frequency of MODIS NDVI are 1km and 16 days, respectively. To minimize the number of cloud contaminated pixels in the MODIS NDVI data, the maximum value composite is applied to the 16 days data. And correction of cloud contaminated pixels based on the spatiotemporal continuity assumption are applied to the monthly NDVI data. To reduce the dataset and improve the classification quality, 9 phenological data, such as, NDVI maximum, amplitude, average, and others, derived from the corrected monthly NDVI data. The 3 types of land cover maps (International Geosphere Biosphere Programme: IGBP, University of Maryland: UMd, and MODIS) were used to build up a "quasi" ground truth data set, which were composed of pixels where the three land cover maps classified as the same land cover type. The classification results show that the fractions of broadleaf trees and grasslands are greater, but those of the croplands and needleleaf trees are smaller compared to those of the IGBP or UMd. The validation results using in-situ observation database show that the percentages of pixels in agreement with the observations are 80%, 77%, 63%, 57% in MODIS, KLC, IGBP, UMd land cover data, respectively. The significant differences in land cover types among the MODIS, IGBP, UMd and KLC are mainly occurred at the southern China and Manchuria, where most of pixels are contaminated by cloud and snow during summer and winter, respectively. It shows that the quality of raw data is one of the most important factors in land cover classification.
The classification of fog type and the characteristics of fog based on fog events over South Korea were investigated using a 3-year (2015~2017) visibility meter data. One-minute visibility meter data were used to identify fog with present weather codes and surface observation data. The concept of fog events was adopted for the better definition of fog properties and more objective classification through the detailed investigation of life cycle of fog. Decision tree method was used to classify the fog types and the final fog types were radiation fog, advection fog, precipitation fog, cloud base lowering fog and morning evaporation fog. We enhanced objectivity in classifying the types of fog by adding the satellite and the buoy observations to the conventional usage of AWS and ceilometer data. Radiation fog, the most common type in South Korea, frequently occurs in inland during autumn. A considerable number of advection fogs occur in island area in summer, especially in July. Precipitation fog accounts for more than a quarter of the total fog events and frequently occurs in islands and coastal areas. Cloud base lowering fog, classified using ceilometer, occurs occasionally for all areas but the occurrence rate is relatively high in east and west coastal area. Morning evaporation fog type is rarely observed in inland. The occurrence rate of thick fog with visibility less than 100 meters is amount to 21% of total fog events. Although advection fog develops into thick fog frequently, radiation fog shows the minimum visibility, in some cases.
