  • It is found that the commercialization of nylon 66/Cloisite 93A nanocomposite by applying melt intercalation is possible in the composite production facilities of the pilot scale which has been generalized today. The strength and modulus under tensile and flexural stress have been improved with the introduction of Cloisite 93A in nylon 66. Furthermore, it is found through the analysis of morphologic and crystallization behavior that the elements such as content of Cloisite 93A, viscosity of nylon 66 and the crystallization behavior have significantly influences on the characteristics of nanocomposite.

  • Nitrile rubber (NBR) composites were prepared using the commercially avaliable rubber compounding process with Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A or carbon black as fillers. When Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A was used as a filler in the NBR composites, the mechanical properties, oil resistant, and oxygen barrier were better than those for carbon black composites. In cure characteristics of NBR/clay composites, scorch time and curing time were reduced. It was found that alkyl ammonium ion inserted in Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A was considered as an accelerator of vulcanization for NBR composites.

  • We synthesized polyester-diol containing Cloisite 30B which is exfoliated during the synthesis. First, esterification was conducted with excess adipic acids and two 2-hydroxyethyl groups of the tertiary ammonium tethered to Cloisite 30B silicate layer. Due to the small molecular size of adipic acid ($d{\approx}3.0\;{\AA}$, $L{\approx}9.3\;{\AA}$), it penetrated into the interlayer of Cloisite 30B, reacted with the 2-hydroxyethyl groups, and produced the tertiary ammonium that has the two ethyl-ester adipic acid groups, one methyl group, and one hydrogenated alkyl group. Through the esterification, the molecular size of the tertiary ammonium increased and as the result, the basal space of Cloisite 30B increased from $18.4\;{\AA}$ to more than $58.3\;{\AA}$. The produced ethyl-ester adipic acid and unreacted adipic acid reacted with excess diethylene glycol ([COOH]/[OH]${\approx}0.6$) to be polyester-diol. The COOH conversion calculated from the acid value of the reactant mixture was 94%. The number average molecular weight and PDI of the produced polyester-diol were 830 g/mol and 1.2, respectively.

  • The Nylon/clay nanocomposite were prepared with Cloisite25A and Cloisite30B. And mechanical properties and thermal properties of Nylon/clay nanocomposites on the amount of MMT have been investigated. From the results of XRD and TEM, we found that mono layered silicates were dispersed in polymer matrix and those resultants were exfoliated nanocomposites. When Cloisite30B was used as an intercalant in the Nylon/Clay nanocomposites, the mechanical and thermal properties of Nylon were higher than those with Cloisite25A.

  • Soy protein isolate (SPI)-based nanocomposite films with three different types of nanoclays, such as Cloisite $Na^+$, Cloisite 20A, and Cloisite 30B, were prepared using a solution casting method, and their optical, tensile, and water vapor barrier properties were determined to investigate the effect of nano-clay type on film properties. Among the tested nanoclays, Cloisite $Na^+$, a hydrophilic montmorillonite (MMT), exhibited the highest transparency with least opaqueness, the highest tensile strength, and the highest water vapor barrier properties, indicating Cloisite $Na^+$ is the most compatible with SPI polymer matrix to form nanocomposite films. The film properties of SPI/Cloisite $Na^+$ nanocomposite films were strongly dependent on the concentration of the clay. Film properties such as optical, tensile, and water vapor barrier properties improved significantly (p<0.05) as the concentration of clay increased. However, the effectiveness of addition of the clay reduced above a certain level (i.e., 5wt%), indicating that there is an optimum amount of clay addition to exploit the full advantage of nanocmposite films.

  • In this study, evaluated the properties of layered silicate-based nanocomposite sensitive film. For the fabrication of nanocomposite materials, we selected organically modified layered silicate materials, specifically Cloisite® and Bentone®, which were treated with quaternary ammonium salts. The impedance of the humidity sensors containing organically modified montmorillonite/hectorite clay decreased with increasing relative humidity(RH%). In the case of the Cloisite® humidity sensor exhibited slightly better impedance linearity and hysteresis compared to the Bentone® 38 humidity sensor. Additionally the impedance of the sensor with Bentone® 38 addition was the lowest when compared to the Cloisite®-modified sensor. Comparing the Cloisite®-modified sensors individually, we observed different moisture absorption characteristics based on the hydrophilic properties of the organic-treated materials. The response speed of Cloisite® 93A tended to be slower due to differences in moisture evaporation rates influenced by the hydrophilic organic components. Based on these results, moisture barriers utilizing organically modified layered silicate materials may exhibit slightly lower moisture absorption properties compared to conventional polymer-based moisture barriers. However, their excellent stability, simple processing, and cost-effectiveness make them suitable for humidity sensor applications.

  • In order to improve the thermal stability of polyurethane, we synthesized poly(adipate urethane) (PAU) and three PAU composites, PAU/30B (2.7 wt% 30B), PAU/MP (2.2 wt% MP), PAU/30B/MP (2.2 wt% 30B and 2.2 wt% MP), from poly(oxydiethylene adipate)-diol (PAD), 4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), Cloisite 30B (30B), and melamine phosphate (MP). 30B and MP were introduced into the reactant mixture at the initial stage of the esterification between adipic acid and diethylene glycol, so 30B and MP were evenly dispersed in the PAU composites for long period. At temperatures lower than $250^{\circ}C$, the PAU composites were degraded faster than pristine PAU, mainly due to the decomposition of 30B and MP. At higher temperatures, the 30B and MP enhanced the thermal stability of the PAU composites. Compared with the pristine PAU, the thermal decomposition rates of the PAU composites decreased by 13~17%. In air, the residual weights of PAU/30B, PAU/MP, and PAU/30B/MP were 2.4, 2.3, and 7.3 wt% at $700^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • To investigate organoclay, high styrene resin masterbatch (HSR), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), and polystyrene (PS) as reinforcing materials for the improvement of the abrasion resistance of poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene) (SBS), SBS/organoclay nanocomposites, SBS/HSR, SBS/HIPS, and SBS/PS blends were prepared. The effect of organoclay and blends on the abrasion resistance and mechanical properties of SBS was investigated. Even though intercalations of organoclay are observed for SBS/Cloisite 20A nanocomposites and not for SBS/Cloisite 30B composites, the abrasion resistance of SBS/Cloisite 20A nanocomposites is worse than that of SBS/Cloisite 30B composites. When SBS was blended with HSR, HIPS and PS, the abrasion resistance of the blends increases with increasing of HSR, HIPS and PS content from 0 to 20 wt%.

  • Nanocomposite materials provides efficient reinforcement, thermal endurance, and many other advantages depending on the additives used, with applications in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries. Here, epoxy based nanocomposites were synthesized in the presence of Cloisite 15A and characterized with TEM, XRD, TGA, and DMA. To determine the effect of the clay d-spacing, Cloisite 20A was also used to synthesize the nanocompostes. In addition to the traditional hot plate method, an ultrasonicator was used to investigate the effect of different types of mixing on the properties of the nanocomposite; no significant effect was found. An examination of the nanocomposite morphology revealed that all the nanocomposites synthesized yielded an intercalated structure. When 5 wt% of Cloisite 15A was used with 20 min sonication time, the storage modulus increased 10% over the neat(no clay) nanocomposite. In general, the presence of Cloisite 15A produced a better storage modulus than Cloisite 20A.
