In this study, a real-time grouting management system based on the clogging theory was established to manage injection procedure in real time. This system is capable of estimating hydraulic permeability with the passage of time as the grout permeates through the ground, and therefore, capable of estimating real time injection distance and flow rate. By adopting the Controlled Injection Pressure (CoIP) model, it was feasible to predict the grout permeation status with the elapse of time by consecutively updating the hydraulic gradient and flow rate estimated from a clogging-induced alteration of pore volume. Moreover, a method to estimate the volume of the fractured gap according to the reduction in injection pressure was proposed. The validity of the proposed system was successfully established by comparing the estimated values with the measured field data.

Several well resistance effects induced by bending, confining stress, temperature, bubbles, and apparent opening size have been considered and researched for the reasonable PBD design. The effect of apparent opening size(AOS), however, was not extensively studied and the clogging effect by AOS was not clearly researched. In this paper, the slurry consolidation test which 4 types of PBD are installed in large slurry consolidometer($H{\times}D$, $2.0m{\times}1.2m$) is performed to investigate the clogging effect by filter's AOS. The results show that the internal clogging is observed all types of PBD, and a quantity of inflowed soil particles are increased at the lower part of PBD and the kink zone. In addition, the internal clogging phenomenon does not relate with the shape and size of PBD. In filter's AOS test, it was easily observed that soil particles bigger than AOS of tested filter passed PBD filter by SEM. This paper demonstrates that the reduction of discharge capability may be accelerated by internal clogging at the kink zone.
Artificial recharge systems have been employed to solve drought problems due to global climate change. Despite the increased usage, the applications of artificial recharge systems are limited by clogging problems, which reduce recharge rates. In this study, the soil texture and mineral characteristics of alluvial soil in a planned artificial recharge system area were investigated to evaluate the possibility of chemical clogging during the injection of stream water. The primary minerals contained in the clastic particles are quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, and biotite, and the secondary minerals filling the pore space are illite, kaolinite and Fe-oxide. The fact that carbonate and sulfate are observed as secondary minerals in the pore space suggests that chemical clogging has not occurred by the interaction between the groundwater and surface water in the study area. Thus, monitoring soil properties, e.g., the formation and growth of secondary minerals in the pore space, is required to investigate the possibility of chemical clogging in artificial recharge systems.

Geochemical analysis of the various kinds of water including observation borehole groundwater was carried out for the assessment of the hydrological safety of the underground oil storage cavern and the potentiality of mineralogical and microbiological clogging was estimated. Most of water samples belonged to $Ca-HCO_3$ and $Ca-HCO_3-SO_4$ types. There was no distinct chemical difference in the various kinds of water. All kinds of water are undersaturated with the calcite which is the major clogging mineral. Most water samples have low Fe and Mn concentrations. However, they are saturated or oversaturated with the iron-oxide/hydroxide minerals and have high dissolved oxygen contents which suggests the possibility of clogging by the iron-oxide/hydroxide minerals as a long-term aspect. Several water samples from the ground observation borehole also show the high saturation indices far the clay minerals, which can fill up the fractures, indicating the possibility of clogging by the clay minerals. Statistical analysis shows the degree of mineral precipitation or dissolution is mainly controlled by pH, Eh and DO of water samples. According to the microbial analysis, the aerobic microbes and slime forming bacteria are dominant in most water samples and anaerobic microbes including sulfate reducing bacteria are very low or not detected. Although the slime forming bacteria which are known as a main microbial cause of the clogging is lower than $10^5\;CFUs/mL$ in all water samples, because the slime forming bacteria are dominant microbe in several observation boreholes, the clogging can be caused by it as a long-term aspect. In addition, the possibility of clogging can be increased if the microbial effect is combined with the mineralogical effect such as iron oxide/hydroxide minerals for the possibility of clogging. Therefore, the systematic and long-term program for the assessment of clogging is required for the safe operation of underground oil storage cavern.
Sand filters are widely used in infiltration systems to manage polluted urban runoff. Clogging, which is mainly caused by the deposition of sediments on the filter media, reduces the filter system's infiltration capacity, which further limits its lifespan and function. The physical, chemical and biological clogging characteristics of sand filter, therefore, need to be known for effective design and maintenance. Physical clogging behavior and variations in the characteristics of sand filters according to different media depths are examined in this paper. The variations were observed from laboratory column infiltration tests conducted in a vertical flow and fluctuating head condition. It can be seen that an increase in filter media depth results in a high sediment removal performance; however, it leads to a shorter lifespan due to clogging. In the choice of filter media depth to be used in field applications, therefore, the purpose of facilities as well as maintenance costs need to be considered. At all filter media depth configurations, premature clogging occurred because sediments of 100~250 μm clogged the top 15% of filter media depth. Thus, scrapping the top 15% of filter media may be suggested as the first operational maintenance process for the infiltration system.
A series of model tests were performed in this study to demonstrate the clogging mechanism created during the installation of a compaction pile to improve soft ground. The application of an air-jet to extrude sand or aggregates from a casing during the installation of a compaction pile imposes a remarkably high-pressure difference between the composite soil layers of clay and sand (or aggregates), resulting in severe clogging. Therefore, a one-dimensional testing system was developed to simulate composite soil layers consisting of clay and sand (or aggregates) and to apply a high-pressure differential at both boundaries, thus replicating the extrusion process used in compaction pile installation. Herein, the performance of two construction materials for compaction piles of crushed stone and grading-controlled aggregates was compared. A series of one-dimensional model tests were performed under multiple pressure settings, with clogging depth and permeability measured in each case. Results indicate that, blinding clogging mechanisms and blocking defined by previous studies were observed for crushed stone, and a new mechanism of "infiltration" was revealed and defined. Whereas, the controlled aggregates performed excellently against clogging because only blinding was observed.
For elucidating excessive growth of biofilm that subsequently leads to the clogging problem in a small town's sewer lines of Wisconsin, the FISH method was employed. At the beginning of the simulated experiments, ${\beta}$-subclass proteobacteria prevailed in runs fed with industrial wastewater, while ${\gamma}$-subclass proteobacteria dominated in runs with domestic wastewater. However, the bacterial community structure changed significantly over six weeks; Cytophaga-Flavobacterium (CF)group bacteria dominated in most runs fed with the small town's wastewater regardless of their source, while CF-group decreased strongly in run fed with domestic sewage from another city (Madison). It was also microscopically confirmed that most of those clogging materials was toilet tissue, which in turn may lead to vigorous growth of cellulose-degrading CF-group bacteria. This dominant presence of CF-group bacteria in the small town's sewer indicates that the main constituent of biofilm, toilet tissue (cellulose) in sewage, might have induced the unique pattern of their microbial community structure. Therefore, it suggests that molecular technique is useful for monitoring the clogging problems in sewer lines.

Various core shapes of cylindrical drains are used for accelerating primary consolidation for soft clay deposits, but serious harmful disadvantages on drainage capacity may occur on cylindrical drains due to confining Pressure when they are installed in that soil. In this study, two different core shapes of cylindrical drain are used to evaluate the drainage capacity with consideration of clogging effects on their filter jackets for an applied confining pressure. Column tests with radial drainage system were conducted under confining pressure of 50 kPa for 13 days. Two parameters which are discharge and accumulated volume of water drained were measured as the time elapsing. From this experimental study, the results showed that at the Initial stage before the clogging developed enough, the cylindrical drain with angular-type-plastic-core could produce discharge twice higher (maximum) than those with round-type. After 13 days had passed on, cylindrical drain with angular-type-plastic-core could produce discharge only 20% higher than those with round-type one. Eventually, there is a possibility that the efficiency of using angular-type-cylindrical-drain will be similar to the round-type one as the clogging develops more.
