Background: In Morocco, the epidemiological profile of cervical cancer is not well established. The focus of the present study was both epidemiological and pathological characteristics. Methods: For all cases of cervical cancer treated between 2003 and 2007 in the National Institute of Oncology and the Oncology Department of the IbnRochd hospital (Casablanca), 900 cases were randomly selected. Results: The mean age was $52.1{\pm}11.8$ years. The most (90.5%) represented histological type was squamous cell carcinoma. For more than 57.0% cases the mean distance between patient's origin and center of treatment was greater than 100km. According to the FIGO classification, only 17.2% of patients were identified as being in early stages (0 and I). For 72.2% patients the follow-up did not exceed 2 years. At 1 year of following-up 55.8% of patients were alive and 43.4% were lost to following-up. Conclusion: Our study addressed the issue of the burden of cervical cancer in Morocco. The result provides a basis for decision-makers for the development of strategic measures to implement the fight against cervical cancer in Morocco.
The mosquito-borne pathogen Zika virus may result in neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly. The virus is classified as a member of the Flaviviridae family and its wide spread in multiple continents is a significant threat to public health. So, there is a need to develop animal models to examine the pathogenesis of the disease and to develop vaccines. To examine the clinical profile during Zika virus infection, we infected neonatal and adult wild-type mice (C57BL/6 and Balb/c) and compared the clinical signs of African-lineage strain (MR766) and Asian-lineage strain (PRVABC59, MEX2-81) of Zika virus. Consistent with previous reports, eight-week-old female Balb/c mice infected with these viral strains showed no changes in body weight, survival rate, and neurologic signs, but demonstrated increases in the weights of spleens and hearts. However, one-day-old neonates showed significantly lower survival rate and body weight with the African-lineage strain than the Asian-lineage strain. These results confirmed the pathogenic differences between Zika virus strains. We also evaluated the clinical responses in neonatal and adult mice of different strains. Our findings suggest that these are useful mouse models for characterization of Zika virus for vaccine development.
The low profile Ionescu-Shiley pericardial xenograft valve had been initially introduced to have improved hemodynamic performance and expected superior durability, However, subsequent clinical reports and laboratory studies have repeatedly indicated early failure of the valve from mechanical reasons in valve design, A total and consecutive 169 patients underwent isolated MVR with the low profile Ionescu-Shiley valve at Seoul National University Hospital from November 1984 to October 1989 [Group ISLM]. Five patients [3.0%] died within 30 days of surgery, and early survivors were followed up for 734.9 patient-years [Mean$\pm$SD, 4.9$\pm$2.0 years], Late mortality rate was 0.136% /patient-year [pt-yr], Linearized incidences of major complications were: 0.953% embolism /pt-yr; 0.680% bleeding /pt-yr; 0.272% endocarditis /pt-yr; and 0, 408% primary tissue failure [PTF] /pt-yr, The actuarial survival was 99.4$\pm$0.6%, and probabilities of from thromboembolism and from PTF were 90.7$\pm$4.6% and 95.9$\pm$2.6% at 8 years, respectively These results were compared with the clinical data from the 291 patients of isolated MVR with the standard Ionescu-Shiley valve at the same hospital during the period between October 1978 and June 1983 [Group ISUM], Group ISUM included 11% of patients younger than 15 years of age, whereas Group ISLM did no patient of this age. The mean age at the time of surgery was significantly younger in Group ISUM than one in Group ISLM [P<0.001]. Differences were not statistically significant in operative mortality, mean follow-up period and linearized incidences of thromboembolism, bleeding and endocarditis, between two groups, However, the linearized rate of PTF was lower [P<0.001] and probabilities of freedom fro PTF higher [P<0.001] in Group ISLM at least up to postoperative 8 years. While the features of PTF of the standard valve was predominantly degeneration with calcification and stenosis, the ones of the low profile valve was cusp tear and incompetence. It remains, however, to be seen whether the low profile valve fails mostly from mechanical reason, and further follow-up will still be necessary to determine the differences in mode of PTF of two valves.
Purpose: To present clinical results of proximal first metatarsal opening wedge osteotomy and low profile plate fixation in hallux valgus deformity. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two patients (39 feet) underwent surgery for hallux valgus deformity. Fourteen patients (18 feet; Group A) underwent proximal first metatarsal opening wedge osteotomy fixed with low profile titanium plate ($Arthrex^{(R)}$), and 18 patients (21 feet; Group B) underwent proximal chevron osteotomy with two K-wires. Improvement in hallux valgus angle (HVA), 1, 2 intermetatarsal angle (IMA), range of motion of 1st metatarsophalangeal joint, VAS score, and the length of first metatarsal on weight-bearing radiograph were evaluated preoperatively and at final follow-up. Results: HVA improved from $36.2{\pm}6.6$ degrees to $11.7{\pm}5.1$ degrees, and 1, 2 IMA improved from $15.7{\pm}2.6$ degrees to $7.2{\pm}1.9$ degrees. VAS score improved from $7.2{\pm}1.2$ to $1.4{\pm}0.9$. There were no significant differences clinically and radiologically. Conclusion: Proximal first metatarsal opening wedge osteotomy with stable fixation using low profile plate may be an effective surgical option for correction of hallux valgus deformity.
Purpose: To analyze the ridge profile of the anterior maxilla using cone-beam computed tomography and to assess the clinical significance of the ridge profile by performing virtual implant placement. Methods: Thirty-two cone-beam computed tomography scans of anterior maxillae were included. For each tooth, a vertical line was made along the longitudinal axis, and 3 horizontal lines at 1-, 3-, and 5-mm levels below the labial bone crest were drawn perpendicularly to the vertical reference. At these levels, the thickness of the alveolar ridge (RT), and the labial (LT) and palatal bone plate (PT) were measured. Then, virtual implant placement using standard and tapered implants was performed. A generalized linear mixed model was used for statistical analysis. Results: The teeth were located labially based on the proportion of LT and PT with respect to RT. At the 1-mm level, the value of LT was between $1.0{\pm}0.4mm$ for central incisors and $1.3{\pm}0.6mm$ for canines. A large number of teeth had area(s) with less than 1-mm-thick labial bone between the 1- and 5-mm levels below the crest. The mean PT was generally thicker than the LT in all tooth types. The greatest mean value of labial concavity was observed for canines, compared to other tooth types. Men had a greater RT than did women, but had a comparable LT. Less apical fenestration was observed when tapered implants were used. Conclusions: Most teeth in the anterior maxilla had a thin labial bone plate, with no significant difference between sexes. Tapered implants may be advantageous for the anterior maxilla.
This study was designed to test the possibility of using a standardized lateral facial photographs as a clinical tool which produce the prediction of postsurgical soft-tissue profile changes associated with surgical correction in skeletal CIII patients. The number of the patients involved in this study were 27 in total, including 11 male patients and 16 female patients. A practical method to the utilization of presurgical photo prediction for mandibular prognathic patients has been presented. To predict postoperative facial appearance, montage photographs were superimposed on standard facial reference photos taken preoperatively. Within the limitations of its technology, postoperative predictions generated by this method were of sufficient accuracy, especially mandible and chin area, for clinical use. In addition, they provide valuable communication and diagnostic information which may be used in formulating treatment plan in cases requiring corrective orthognathic surgery. But, the lip changes were somewhat exaggerated by photo prediction. Consequently, the photo prediction seems suitable for planning profile changes in orthognathic surgery that include mobilization of one main mandibular fragment. Futher investigations are needed to determine whether changes of soft-tissues and hard-tissues are sufficiently reproducible so that more meaningful predictive values can be established.
Gadolinium contrast agents (CAs) are integral components of clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, safety concerns have arisen regarding the use of gadolinium CAs, due to their association with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). Furthermore, recently the long-term retention of $Gd^{3+}-based$ CAs in brains patients with normal renal function raised another possible safety issue. The safety concerns of $Gd^{3+}-based$ CAs have been based on the ligand structure of $Gd^{3+}-based$ CAs, and findings that $Gd^{3+}-based$ CAs with linear ligand structures showed much higher incidences of NSF and brain retention of CAs than $Gd^{3+}-based$ CAs with macrocyclic ligand structure. In the current study, we report the in vivo biodistribution profile of a new highly stable multifunctional $Gd^{3+}-based$ CA, with macrocyclic ligand structure (HNP-2006). MR imaging using HNP-2006 demonstrated a significant contrast enhancement in many different organs. Furthermore, the contrast enhanced tumor imaging using HNP-2006 confirmed that this new macrocyclic CA can be used for detecting tumor in the central nervous system. Therefore, this new multifunctional HNP-2006 with macrocyclic ligand structure shows great promise for whole-body clinical application.

Background: Detection of antibodies to extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs) is needed for the diagnosis in systemic autoimmune diseases. In this study, we compared three reagents using line immunoblot assay (LIA) or multiplex bead immunoassay for detecting the anti-ENAs. Methods: A total of 89 sera were tested by 3 different assays: EUROASSAY Anti-ENA Profile (Euroimmune, Germany), Polycheck Autoimmune Test (Biocheck GmbH, Germany), and $FIDIS^{TM}$ Connective Profile (Biomedical Diagnostics, France). The following individual ENAs were investigated: Sm, SS-A (Ro), SS-B (La), Scl-70, Jo-1 and RNP. We reviewed medical records to investigate the discrepant results among three methods. Results: Overall percent agreements were 96.1% between EUROASSAY Anti-ENA Profile and $FIDIS^{TM}$ Connective profile; 90.4% between EUROASSAY Anti-ENA Profile and Polycheck Autoimmune Test using the manufacturers' cutoff; 96.4% between EUROASSAY Anti-ENA Profile and Polycheck Autoimmune Test using a upward cutoff; 90.4% between $FIDIS^{TM}$ Connective profile and Polycheck Autoimmune Test the manufacturers' cutoff; and 96.4% between $FIDIS^{TM}$ Connective profile and Polycheck Autoimmune Test a upward cutoff. Conclusions: The three assays showed excellent agreement with each other. With appropriate cutoff, the all three assays for six of the anti-ENA tests investigated in this study can be used in clinical laboratories for detecting the anti-ENAs.

Purpose: A statistical similarity evaluation to compare pharmacokinetics(PK) profile data between nonclinical and clinical experiments has become a significant issue on many drug development processes. This study proposes a new similarity index by considering important parameters, such as the area under the curve(AUC) and the time-series profile of various PK data. Methods: In this study, a new profile similarity index(PSI) by using the concept of a process capability index(Cp) is proposed in order to investigate the most similar animal PK profile compared to the target(i.e., Human PK profile). The proposed PSI can be calculated geometric and arithmetic means of all short term similarity indices at all time points on time-series both animal and human PK data. Designed simulation approaches are demonstrated for a verification purpose. Results: Two different simulation studies are conducted by considering three variances(i.e., small, medium, and large variances) as well as three different characteristic types(smaller the better, larger the better, nominal the best). By using the proposed PSI, the most similar animal PK profile compare to the target human PK profile can be obtained in the simulation studies. In addition, a case study represents differentiated results compare to existing simple statistical analysis methods(i.e., root mean squared error and quality loss). Conclusion: The proposed PSI can effectively estimate the level of similarity between animal, human PK profiles. By using these PSI results, we can reduce the number of animal experiments because we only focus on the significant animal representing a high PSI value.
An overall reduction in the horizontal and vertical dimensions occurs following tooth extraction and the resorption of the buccal part of the ridge is more pronounced than the lingual part. Thus, the resulting morphology of the healed alveolar ridge is often presenting with a discrepancy in bone height between the buccal and lingual aspects of the ridge. The implant with a sloped marginal configuration that is designed to match the sloped contour of the alveolar ridge provides the opportunity to maintain the buccal-lingual bone discrepancy and soft tissue around the implant. This paper introduces the OsseoSpeed TX Profile implants with sloped marginal configuration and explains the characteristics and clinical meanings of those implants.
