  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects by adding oil to clay soil and influences of remained oil in soil as time elapsed. Unconfined compression test and direct shear test were performed to analyze strength properties of contaminants in clayey soil. As a results of $q_u$ test for kerosene and diesel contaminated clayey soil indicate that were decreased from near 5% oil content rapidly and the declination of strength were blunt as oil content over 10%. The cohesions(c) and internal friction angle(${\psi}$) of kerosene contaminated clayey soil were not varied as quantities of kerosene in clayey soil increased. In the case of diesel contaminated clayey soil, the cohesions(c) were decreased and the internal friction angle(${\psi}$) were increased.

  • This study was performed to find the basic data, as needed on the reinforced clayey soil construction work, by estimating job difficulty and optimum moisture content of the reinforced clayey soil, according to its slump test and workability test. As a result, it has been found that the more increasing reinforced clayey soil's moisture content, the higher its slump value. Its 25% moisture content: the reinforced clayey soil except the fiber reinforced soil was able to work with hand; the fiber reinforced soil with the 0.5% or 1.0% of fiber ratio was poor cohesion because of surplus quantity of fiber. Its moisture content between 30% and 35%: shoveling is somewhat difficult but troweling is possible. This study will be needed to modify and add by another.

  • Granite and marble are widely produced and utilized in the construction industry, resulting in significant waste production. It is essential to manage this waste appropriately and repurpose it in recycling processes to ensure sustainability. The utilization of waste materials such as marble and granite waste (MGW) has become increasingly important in geotechnical engineering to improve the physical and mechanical properties of weak soils. This study investigated the applicability of utilizing MGW and cement (C)-MGW mixtures to improve clayey soil. A series of model plate loading tests were carried out in a specialized circular test tank to assess the influence of MGW and C-MGW mixing ratios on clayey soil samples. The samples were prepared by blending MGW and C-MGW in predetermined proportions. It is found that the bearing capacity of clay soil increased by approximately 71% when using MGW and C additives. Moreover, the consolidated settlement values of the clay soil decreased up to 6 times compared to the additive-free case.

  • Deep soil mixing with cement and cement-lime mixtures has been widely used for decades to improve the strength of soils. In this study, small-scale laboratory model tests of polymer columns in soft clayey soil were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using various polymeric compounds as binders in deep soil mixing. Floating and end bearing polymer columns were used to examine the load-settlement relationship of improved soft clayey soils for various area replacement ratios. The results indicate that polymer columns show good promise for use in deep mixing applications.

  • Long-term behavior of reinforced clayey soil by model tests were performed to investigate the effect of reinforcement during loads and under static loads. In order to determine proper contents by weight of monofilament polypropylene fiber and calcium carbonate, the drying shrinkage and compressive strength tests had been conducted before model tests. Model tests were run on a clayey soil mixed with or without reinforcement and test specimen in test apparatus was placed in air dry for 7days before load application. In the case of fiber reinforced soil, the horizontal strain was lower than others during loads because the presence of fibers increased the soil's resistance to deformation. All of reinforced clayey soil, horizontal strain decreased as the water content decrease under static loads.

  • Reinforced Soil Wall has several merits comparing with conventional retaining wall. The conventional method has the limit of wall height, ununiform settlement of the foundation ground, quality assurance of the embankment body, shortening of construction period, economical construction and so on. Basis of previous mentioned things reinforced soil wall is the substitutional method of conventional retaining wall and its necessity is continuously increasing. The embanking material used in reinforced soil wall is generally limited such as a good quality sandy soil, and in many case constructors have to transfer such a good embanking material from far away to construction site. As a result, they would pressed by time and economy. If poor soils could be used embanking material, for example, clayey soil produced in-situ by cutting and excavation, the economical merit of reinforced soil wall would be increased more and more. Likewise, a lot of study about laboratory experimental behavior of reinforced soil wall using a good quality soil is being performed, but is rare study about clayey soil containing much volume of fine particle relatively in korea. In this study, the authors investigated behavior of the geosynthetic reinforced and unreinforced soil walls using clayey soil as embanking material in view of horizontal movement of walls, bearing capacity and reinforcement stress.

  • Clayey soils with swelling and shrinkage characteristics have been major causes for many problems in roads, buildings and other civil engineering infrastructure in various areas of Pakistan, particularly where there are several patches of such soils on either side of Indus River. As the consistency characteristics are directly related with the variation of moisture content; therefore, this study was explicitly focused to investigate the effect of lime and wheat straw on the consistency characteristics of clayey soils with relatively high swelling and shrinkage characteristics. The consistency test results indicate that by the increase in lime content there is a decrease in the plasticity index of soil; for instance, 10% lime content resulted to 59% decrease in the plasticity index value. On the other hand; the addition of wheat straw resulted in a significant increase in the plasticity index; for instance, 10% wheat straw content resulted to a 120% increase in the plasticity index. This study has further shown that the shrinkage and swelling of clayey soils which resulting to several problems in the civil engineering infrastructures may adequately be managed through mixing an appropriate amount of lime and wheat straw as soil stabilizing agent for both immediate and long-term effects.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of volume change is unsaturated clayed soil. The medium-plastic clay was selected and compacted by 50% of Proctor standard compaction energy at 6% higher moisture content than its OMC. A series of isotropic compression tests and triaxial shear tests were performed. The results of the study are summarized as follows. At each matric suction, when the matric suction was increased, the yield stress was increased and slope of volume change was decreased. The more net mean stress was, the less the quantity of volume change was. In shear test, the volumetric strain was much rapidly changed in large matric than in low matric suctions. But the effect of matric suction to volume change disappeared under high net mean stress. At lower deviator stress the more matric suction was, the higher volume change was. But As the matric suction was increasing, the behavior of the unsaturated clayey soil was similar to that of saturated clayey soil. Volume change in the unsaturated clayey soil can be represented as a unique plane in three-dimensional space, which is the axes of net mean stress, matric suction and void ratio.

  • This test was performed to evaluate the change of the unconfined compressive strength, strength parame¡?ters which resulted from direct shear test and oil residue percents analyzed by GC-MS as time lapse, oil addition. Unconfined compression strength of $10\%$ kerosene added by weight of dry soil recovered as time passed. In the case of $5\%$ kerosene added, the strength recovered as much as clean clayey soil after about 50 days passing. For the case of diesel added, the recovery of unconfined compressive strength was not shown even though about 60 days passed. The strength parameters (c, $\psi$) of kerosene added not changed but for diesel added, the cohesion was very decreased as diesel addition increased. Residual percent of kerosene in the soil was less than that of diesel as time passed.
