  • The purpose of this study was to explore the process of scientific thinking as it is revealed through the cases of constructive play for young children. For this purpose, the researcher observed and interviewed six four-year-olds in the Jaemi Class while recording them with a camcorder during a free choice activity class in the morning from April 23 to June 25, 2012. The observations were analyzed in chronological order according to the changes of theories and structure as presented by the children themselves. The process of scientific thinking in constructive play for young children can be divided into presentation of naive theories, the abandonment of naive theories according to repetitive experiences and the discovery of inconsistency, the representation of alternative theories, and the abandonment of alternative theories according to repetitive experiences and the discovery of contradictions. On the basis of the results, constructive play has proved to serve a valuable educational function by inducing scientific thinking processes in children. On the basis of this finding, the researcher suggests the need to provide appropriate educational support to teachers.

  • This paper presents an application of an artificial neural net to the implementation of decision class analysis (DCA), together with the generation of a decision model influence diagram. The diagram is well-known as a good tool for knowledge representation of complex decision problems. Generating influence diagram model is known to in practice require much time and effort, and the resulting model can be generally applicable to only a specific decision problem. In order to reduce the burden of modeling decision problems, the concept of DCA is introduced. DCA treats a set of decision problems having some degree of similarityz as a single unit. We propose a method utilizing a feedforward neural net with supervised learning rule to develop DCA based on influence diagram, which method consists of two phases: Phase l is to search for relevant chance and value nodes of an individual influence diagram from given decision and specific situations and Phase II elicits arcs among the nodes in the diagram. We also examine the results of neural net simulation with an example of a class of decision problems.

  • This study aimed to explore how to characterize the earth science inquiry in schools in terms of science teaching interaction and constructivist teaching practice. The constructivist teaching practices were analyzed with Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) in three aspects including (1) student oriented class implementation, (2) subject knowledge and representation, and (3) classroom communication. Fourteen earth science classes were observed and scored with RTOP. The class was evaluated to be transitional stage in terms of constructivist teaching, e.g., moving toward student-centered teaching practice. Especially, Korean teachers tend to lean their classes more on propositional knowledge than procedural knowledge. To interpret science teaching interactions, an earth science teacher with a RTOP top rank was selected. Her class was then videotaped for detailed analysis. I adopted the analytical framework of communicative approaches and discourse patterns among the five aspects of interactions presented by Mortimer and Scott (2003). It was found that this earth science teacher used more authoritative patterns than the dialogic. In addition, she used IRE discourse pattern more frequently. Interestingly, teachers interacted with their students more frequently in the form of repeated (or IRE chain pattern), that is IRFRF (teacher initiation-student response-teacher feedback-student response-teacher feedback) in the context of dialogic communicative approaches, while simple IRE occurred in an authoritative approach. In earth science classrooms, typical interaction may well be constructed in the form of IRFRF chains to allow students free conjectures and abduction.

  • The MHEG-5 standard defines representation of multimedia and hypermedia information. The MHEG-5 can make it possible to interchange and present information between heterogeneous networked environment. Also, it can provide real-time user interaction. MHEG-5 object generating is the essential requirements for the MHEG-5 applications, In this paper, we designed encoding/decoding class library for the MHEG-5 objects. We can use it for the interchange on the network. The designed class library can provide base technology for the MHEG-5 based distributed multimedia and hypermedia services on the networked environment.

  • The current web implementation largely falls into process-oriented and object-oriented methods. Both ways implement the programs to be used for simple design of external outfit and auxiliary function of hybrid webs and it might lead to cost problems arising from waste of time and man-power to develop with it. Therefore, managed structural system programming which can be applied under .NET framework is suggested in a bid to solve these problems. The structural system design method under .NET environment by applying CS concept prefers to adopting the optimized design configuration suited to proper interfaces of UI configuration, which offers the environment to maintain the inheritance relationship by taking form of the balanced class allotment by domain, and continue to keep the connectivity between UX and UI which leads to application of interface of UX objects as form of objects through connection with objects in class design process. This development method enables programs to be implemented focused on representation methods of UI and UX, and helps relieve much of the burden on development costs.

  • Object recognition technologies using PCA(principal component analysis) recognize objects by deciding representative features of objects in the model image, extracting feature vectors from objects in a image and measuring the distance between them and object representation. Given frequent recognition problems associated with the use of point-to-point distance approach, this study adopted the k-nearest neighbor technique(class-to-class) in which a group of object models of the same class is used as recognition unit for the images in-putted on a continual input image. However, the robustness of recognition strategies using PCA depends on several factors, including illumination. When scene constancy is not secured due to varying illumination conditions, the learning performance the feature detector can be compromised, undermining the recognition quality. This paper proposes a new PCA recognition in which database of objects can be detected under different illuminations between input images and the model images.

  • In this study, a hybrid neural net consisting of an Adaptive LVQ(ALVQ) algorithm and MLP is proposed to perform speaker identification task. ALVQ is a new learning procedure using adaptively feature vector sequence instead of only one feature vector in training codebooks initialized by LBG algorithm and the optimization criterion of this method is consistent with the speaker classification decision rule. ALVQ aims at providing a compressed, geometrically consistent data representation. It is fit to cover irregular data distributions and computes the distance of the input vector sequence from its nodes. On the other hand, MLP aim at a data representation to fit to discriminate patterns belonging to different classes. It has been shown that MLP nets can approximate Bayesian "optimal" classifiers with high precision, and their output values can be related a-posteriori class probabilities. The different characteristics of these neural models make it possible to devise hybrid neural net systems, consisting of classification modules based on these two different philosophies. The proposed method is compared with LBG algorithm, LVQ algorithm and MLP for performance.

  • A prototype design process visualization and guidance system, is being developed. Its purpose is to visualize the design process in more intuitive manner so that one can get an insight to the complicated aspects of the design process. By providing a tangible utility to the design process performed by the expert designers or guided by the system, novice designers will be greatly helped to learn how to approach a certain class of design. Not only as an analysis tool to represent the characteristics of the design process, the system will be useful also for learning design process. A design ontology is being developed to provide the system with a knowledge-base, representing designer's activities associated with various design information during the conceptual design process, and then to be utilized for a computer environment for design analysis and guidance. To develop the design ontology, a conceptual framework of design activity model is proposed, and then the model has been tested and elaborated through investigating the nature of the early conceptual design. A design process representation model is conceptualized based on the ontology, and reflected into the development of the system. This paper presents the development process of the visualization system, modeling of design process ontology, and how the system could be utilized for the analysis and learning of conceptual design methods using computer mediated design support environment.
