In the growing children with normal occlusion and class III malocclusion who need the early treatment to be helped to diagnose and to set up treatment plan by calculating the mean values of the lateral cephalometric measurements, cephalometric measurements by McNamara alalysis were achieved and compared on both the 84 elementary school children with normal occlusion and 83 class III malocclusion children at the age of 7 to 9 in Kwangju city and the results were as follows: 1. On the boys group, between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion, Effective maxillary length, Maxillomandibular differential, Facial axis, Nasion perpendicualr to pogonion, Point A perp to Mx 1, and A-Pog line to Mn 1 showed significant differences(p<0.05). 2. On the girls group, between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion significant differences were shown in Effective Maxillary length, Maxillomandibular differential, Mandibular plan angle, Nasion perpendicualr to Point A, Point A perp to Mx 1, A-Pog line to Mn 1(p<0.01). 3. There were no significant differences between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion of boys group but significant differences between them of girls group in Effective mandibular length(P<0.01). On the boys and girls group, Effective maxilla length of class III malocclusion was shorter than that of normal occlusion. 4. There were no significant differences between normal occlusion and class III malocclusion both in boys and girls at Anterior lower facial height. 5. There were significant differences between boys and girls both in class III malocclusion and normal occlusion at Anterior lower facial height and Mandibular plane angle(p<0.01).
This study examined the relations between degree of posterior dental compensation and skeletal discrepancy in Class III malocclusion. The pretreatment lateral cephalogras and dental casts of 87 skeletal Class III adults were selected to provide a random sampling of skeletal Class III malocclusion. Skeletal discrepancy was described with ANB angle, Wits appraisal, SN-Mn plane angle, FMA and ratios of basal arch width. Degree of posterior dental compensation was described with maxillary intermolar angle, mandibular interolar angle and sum of intermoloar angle. The relationships between skeletal discrepancy and degree of posterior dental compensation were analyzed with simple correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows 1. A strong association was found between the variation in the anteroposterior measure, ANB angle and the variation of posterior dental compensation measures, sum of intermolar angle and mandibular intermolar angle in skeletal Class III malocclusion. 2. There was no statistically significant relationship between the variation in the vertical measures and the variation of posterior dental compensation measures in skeletal Class III malocclusion. 3. There was no statistically significant relationship between the variation in the anteroposterior and vortical measures and degree of basal arch width discrepancy.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of craniofacial skeleton on orthognathic surgical cases with skeletal Class III malocclusion. For this study, 74 students at the dental college of Chosun University volunteered as a normal occlusion group. They had well-balanced faces and good occlusions with acceptable Class I molar relationship. They had not received orthodontic treatment and had no signs or symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. 45 malocclusion patients enrolled for orthognathic surgical treatment with skeletal Class III malocclusion at the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Chosun University. On the basis of this study. the results of this study were as follows: 1. Skeletal Class III malocclusion was largely due to the overgrowth of mandible in man and the undergrowth of maxilla in woman. 2. The mandible was antero-inferiorly overgrown by large MP-HP angle and large genial angle in orthognathic surgical cases with skeletal Class III malocclusion. And also, upper incisors were severely labioversioned, but on the other hand lower incisors were linguoversioned. 3. In female, lower-third facial height was characteristically shortened in comparison with middle-third facial height and also, lower facial throat angle was small in male.
This study was carried out to study the changing patterns in muscle activities in Angle's II and Class III malocclusion patients following activator therapy, To study the activities of anterior temporal(T.A.), masseter(M.M.), posterior temporal(T.P.), and anterior belly of digastric(D.A.) muscles, surface electrodes were placed on 15 Angle's Class II and 17 Angle's Class III malocclusion patients and following conclusions were obtained after electromyographic recordings were taken at prior to the activator therapy and at some time between 6 -12 month after the start of activator therapy. 1. Class II and Class III malocclusion groups, when compared to normal occlusiongroup, showed no significant differences during resting and swallowing. But significant differences were observed in masseter and posterior temporal muscles during clenching. 2. Most of the muscles studied showed a certain pattern, that is those groups whose pre-treatment E.M.G. were lower than the normal value showed significant increase after activator therapy, whereas those groups whose pre-treatment E.M.G. were higher than the normal value showed significant decrease after activator therapy. This pattern was observed in all of the muscle groups studied except T.A.(swallowing), T.P.(clenching) and D.A.(swallowing, clenching) in Angle's Class III malocclusion group and in Angle's Class II malocclusion group, above tendency were observed only in T.A.(swallowing), M.M.(resting, swallowing) and T.P.(clenching). This pattern was less obvious during clenching. 3. When E.M.G. activity after activator therapy between Angle's Class II and Class III malocclusion group was compared, Class III malocclusion group showed more increase during resting, and Class II malocclusion group showed more increase during swallowing and clenching excepting M.M. and D.A. respectively.
There are variations in regional cranial and facial balance as a normal developmental process and regional imbalances often tend to compensate each other to provide functional equilibrium. This study was designed to analyse the patterns of morphologic harmony and inharmony inherent in normal occlusion and malocclusion. The subjects consisted of 92 individuals with normal occlusion and 60 Class III malocclusion patients. Their lateral cephalograms were traced and analysed using the counterpart analysis described by Enlow. The normal occlusion group was divided into Normal Types A and B according to the relative positions of Points A and B. The following conclusions were reached: 1 The normal occlusion consisted of $28.3\%$ of Normal Type A and $69.6\%$ of Normal Type B. 2. The Normal Type A and B differed from each other in the morphology of the cranial base, the mandibular ramus and corpus, and the functional occlusal plane. The Normal Type B showed considerable mandibular protrusion effect in the effective dimension and alignment of the above factors. 3. Most normal individuals showed some degree of disharmony among morphologic factors but the deviations were relatively small. 4. The Normal Type B was less balanced than the Normal Type A. 5. More regional imbalances were involved in Class III malocclusion and the imbalances were more severe.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount and interrelationship of the soft and hard tissue changes after simultaneous maxillary clockwise rotation and mandibular setback surgery in skeletal class III malocclusion. The sample comprised of 16 adult patients who had anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy. These patients had received presurgical orthodontic treatment and surgical treatment which consisted of Le fort I Osteotomy and bilateral saggital split ramus osteotomy. The presurgical (T1) and postsurgical (T2) lateral cephalograms were evaluated. The computerized statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS/PC program. The results demonstrated a decrease in the vertical dimension in the soft and hard tissue. The nasolabial angle was increased and the mentolabial angle was decreased. The results showed also many statistically significant correlations(p<0.05). The lower lip closely followed the skeletal movement of the B- point in the horizontal plane. The double jaw rotation surgery can afford a good solution to solve the problems of class III malocclusion cases.
Objective: The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the stability of the skeletal and dental widths using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) after segmental Le Fort I osteotomy in adult patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion requiring maxillary expansion. Methods: In total, 25 and 36 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion underwent Le Fort I osteotomy (control group) and segmental Le Fort I osteotomy (experimental group), respectively. Coronal CBCT images were used to measure the dental and skeletal widths before (T1) and after (T2) surgery and at the end of treatment (T3). The correlation between the extent of surgery and the amount of relapse in the experimental group was also determined. Results: In the control group, the dental width exhibited a significant decrease of $0.70{\pm}1.28mm$ between T3 and T2. In the experimental group, dental and skeletal expansion of $1.83{\pm}1.66$ and $2.55{\pm}1.94mm$, respectively, was observed between T2 and T1. The mean changes in the dental and skeletal widths between T3 and T2 were $-1.41{\pm}1.98$ and $-0.67{\pm}0.72mm$, respectively. There was a weak correlation between the amount of skeletal expansion during segmental Le Fort I osteotomy and the amount of postoperative skeletal relapse in the experimental group. Conclusions: Maxillary expansion via segmental Le Fort I osteotomy showed good stability, with a skeletal relapse rate of 26.3% over approximately 12 months. Our results suggest that a greater amount of expansion requires greater efforts for the prevention of relapse.
Objectives: This retrospective study evaluated the changes in the airway width after the orthognathic surgery associated with the skeletal Class III malocclusion. Methods: The lateral cephalograms of 30 adult patients were taken before and immediately after the operation, and after the orthodontic treatment. The angles and distances of them were measured and compared. Results: Before the surgery, the mean value of mandibular (S-B) setback was 9.66 mm, and moved by 1.56 mm anteriorly after the orthodontic treatment. The ANB increased by 5.42 degrees, since then it decreased by 0.68 degree. The hyoid bone (S-APH) moved by 5.05 mm posteriorly, but then moved by 2.26 mm anteriorly. The soft tissue width of laryngeal pharynx (apw2-ppw2) was narrowed by 1.04 mm, and decreased by additional 0.83 mm after the orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: As the mandible was moved back, the location of hyoid bone and laryngeal pharynx were moved backward.

This article describes the use of an activator with anterior high pull headgear to treat a skeletal Class II malocclusion in children in the mixed-dentition phase. A combination of headgear-activator appliance can inhibit forward and downward growth of the maxillary complex while stimulating mandibular growth. The correction of Class II malocclusion can be achieved by careful case selection of a motivated patient with a favorable growth pattern. The patients who have skeletal Class II malocclusions were treated by means of activator with anterior high pull headgear and the following results were observed; 1. Forward and downward growth of the maxillary complex were inhibited 2. Mandibular growth was stimulated and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible was observed. 3. Large overjet and deep overbite were corrected.
