This paper introduces an improved design equation to evaluate the resisting capacity of circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns partially strengthened with outer steel tube. When RC column members are required to be strengthened according to the change in the loadings considered and/or the deterioration progress in columns, wrapping up RC column with steel circular tube, which takes the form of concrete filled steel tube (CFST), has been popularly considered because of its structural advantage induced from the confinement effect. However, the relatively high construction cost of steel tube is restricting its use to the required region, while deriving the shape of a partial CFST column. To evaluate the resisting capacity of a partial CFST column, numerical analyses need to be performed, and a numerical model proposed in the previous study for the numerical analysis of full CFST columns is used to conduct parametric studies for the introduction of a design equation. The bond-slip effect developed along the interface between the in-filled concrete and the exterior steel tube is taken into consideration and the validity of the numerical model has been established through correlation studies between experimental data and numerical results for partial CFST circular columns. Moreover, parametric studies make it possible to introduce a design equation for determining the optimum length of outer steel tube which produces partial CFST circular columns.
This paper describes the experimental and numerical investigation on circular and octagonal CFDST short columns under concentric loading to study their responses to various internal circular steel tube sizes by the constant cross-sectional dimensions of the external circular and octagonal steel tube. The non-linear finite element analysis of circular and octagonal CFDST columns was executed using the ABAQUS to forecast and compare the axial behavior influenced by the various sizes of internal circular steel tubes. The study shows that the axial compressive strength and ductility of circular and octagonal CFDST columns were significantly influenced by inner steel tubes with the strengths of constituent materials.
This paper presents the experimental results on the strength behavior and failure modes of box beam-to-circular column connections in steel piers. Previous research introduced parameters such as joint central angles, extension of horizontal stiffeners, and use of equivalent web depth, which ignored strength behavior and failure modes of box beam-to-circular column connections. The use of equivalent web depth $d_2$ is not reasonable when central angle ${\alpha}$ is closer to $90^{\circ}$; therefore, a monotonic loading test has been performed for eight connection specimens. From the test, it is identified that the connection with the circular column is stronger than the connection with the box-sectioned substitution column. Also, the strength of the beam-to-column connections with horizontal stiffeners is higher than the one of the no column stiffeners. The concrete-filled effect of box beam-to-circular column connection is also investigated, and the experimental yield strength of the connection is compared with the theoretical one. Also, more a reasonable equivalent web depth is suggested. The failure modes of connection are clearly defined.
This paper describes the design and behaviour of cold-formed stainless steel slender circular hollow section columns. The columns were compressed between fixed ends at different column lengths. The investigation focused on large diameter-to-plate thickness (D/t) ratio ranged from 100 to 200. An accurate finite element model has been developed. The initial local and overall geometric imperfections have been included in the finite element model. The material nonlinearity of the cold-formed stainless steel sections was incorporated in the model. The column strengths, load-shortening curves as well as failure modes were predicted using the finite element model. The nonlinear finite element model was verified against test results. An extensive parametric study was carried out to study the effects of cross-section geometries on the strength and behaviour of stainless steel slender circular hollow section columns with large D/t ratio. The column strengths predicted from the parametric study were compared with the design strengths calculated using the American Specification, Australian/New Zealand Standard and European Code for cold-formed stainless steel structures. It is shown that the design strengths obtained using the Australian/New Zealand and European specifications are generally unconservative for the cold-formed stainless steel slender circular hollow section columns, while the American Specification is generally quite conservative. Therefore, design equation was proposed in this study.
The investigation on the behaviour of cold-formed stainless steel non-slender circular hollow section columns is presented in this paper. The normal strength austenitic stainless steel type 304 and the high strength duplex materials (austenitic-ferritic approximately equivalent to EN 1.4462 and UNS S31803) were considered in this study. The finite element method has been used to carry out the investigation. The columns were compressed between fixed ends at different column lengths. The geometric and material nonlinearities have been included in the finite element analysis. The column strengths and failure modes were predicted. An extensive parametric study was carried out to study the effects of normal and high strength materials on cold-formed stainless steel non-slender circular hollow section columns. The column strengths predicted from the finite element analysis were compared with the design strengths calculated using the American Specification, Australian/New Zealand Standard and European Code for cold-formed stainless steel structures. The numerical results showed that the design rules specified in the American, Australian/New Zealand and European specifications are generally unconservative for the cold-formed stainless steel non-slender circular hollow section columns of normal and high strength materials, except for the short columns and some of the high strength stainless steel columns. Therefore, different values of the imperfection factor and limiting slenderness in the European Code design rules were proposed for cold-formed stainless steel non-slender circular hollow section columns.

To fully understand shear mechanisms and composite effects of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, systematic numerical investigations were conducted in this paper by improved finite element models. The triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of the concrete and the interactions between the concrete and steel tube were considered. Afterwards, the critical and upper bound shear span ratios of the circular CFST column under lateral shear loading were determined. The composite effects between the two materials were analyzed by comparing the shear resistance with plain concrete column and hollow steel tube. In addition, a method that predicts the shear bearing capacity of a circular CFST column was proposed. The confining effects on the concrete core and the restraining effects on the steel tube were considered in this method. The proposed formula can predict more accurate results than the methods in different codes and references.
A hybrid double skin concrete filled (HDSCF) circular steel tube column is proposed in this study. The yield strength of the outer steel tube is larger than 690MPa and the inner tube has less strength. In order to achieve efficiency with the high strength outer tube, a feasibility study on reducing the thickness of the tube below the specified design codes for CFTs was conducted based on an experimental approach. The experiment also took variables such as thickness of the inner tube, hollow ratio, and strength of concrete into consideration to investigate the behavior of the HDSCF column. In order to estimate the applicability of design equations for CFTs to the HDSCF column, test results from CFT and HDSCF columns with design codes were compared. It was found that the axial compressive performance of the proposed HDSCF column is equivalent to that of the conventional CFT member irrespective of design variables. Furthermore, the design equation for a circular CFT given by EC4 is applicable to estimate the ultimate strength of the HDSCF circular steel tube column.

Concrete-filled steel columns consist of circular, square or rectangular hollow sections filled concrete. Much research has studied for the behavior of concrete-filled steel structures. The advantages from structural point of view are the triaxial confinement of the concrete within the section, and the fire resistance of the column which largely depends on the residual capacity of the concrete core. The axial capacity of a concrete-filled rectangular or circular section is enhanced by the confining effect of the steel section on the concrete which depends in the magnitude on the shape of the section and the length of the column. Buckling tends to reduce the benefit of confinement on the squash load as the column slenderness increases. In circular sections it is possible to develop the cylinder strength of the concrete. When compare with reinforced concrete columns, the concrete-filled composite column possesses much better strength and ductility in shear and generally in flexure also. Many researches are being conducted about concrete filled steel column to get these advantages in building design. In this paper it is provided to the basic experimental study of compression behavior of the circular and rectangular tubular steel pipe filled with concrete.
In current engineering practice, circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been used as effective structural components due to their significant structural and economic benefits. To apply these structural components into steel-concrete composite moment resisting frames, increasing number of research into the column-base connections of circular CFST columns have been found. However, most of the previous research focused on the strength, rigidity and seismic resisting performance of the circular CFST column-base connections. The present paper attempts to investigate the demountability of bolted circular CFST column-base connections using the finite element method. The developed finite element models take into account the effects of material and geometric nonlinearities; the accuracy of proposed models is validated through comparison against independent experimental results. The mechanical performance of CFST column-base connections with both permanent and demountable design details are compared with the developed finite element models. Parametric studies are further carried out to examine the effects of design parameters on the behaviour of demountable circular CFST column-base connections. Moreover, the initial stiffness and moment capacity of such demountable connections are compared with the existing codes of practice. The comparison results indicate that an improved prediction method of the initial stiffness for these connections should be developed.

The objective of this research is to study the ultimate moment capacity of the connections between steel I-beams and concrete-filled steel tube columns using different stiffener configurations. The main parameters considered are column cross section shape, square or circular, and filling the column with concrete. This analytical study includes finite element models using ANSYS program taking geometric and material nonlinearities into consideration. These models are verified against the experimental results obtained from previous researches and current design guides. The results show that using proper stiffener configuration affects the stress distribution through the connection and increases the ultimate moment capacity of the connections. Also, circular column is advantageous than the square column for all stiffener configurations and dimensions.
