  • In this study, we examined the antimicroboal effect against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Prevotella intermedia which were the bacteria causing the Periodontopathic by using 34 types of natural plant extracts. Therefore, this study measures growth inhibition activity and Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) of a sample extract with the use of organic solvent extracts in order to analyze the antibacterial effect of natural plant extracts on periodontopathic bacteria. Each of the 34 types of natural plant extracts were extracted by using the ethanol, and subsequently, the size of growth inhibition zone(clear zone, ㎜) of respective extracts were measured through the disk diffusion method. As a result, it was found that the growth inhibitory activity was found for A. actinomycetemcomitans, which is the bacteria causing the Periodontitis, in 13 types of natural plant extracts such as Raphanus sativus, Akebia quinata, Paeonia lactiflora, Belamcanda chinensis, Inula britannics, Houttuynia cordata, Forsythia saxatilis, Gentiana macrophylla, Melia azedarach, Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, Kalopanax Pictus, etc. In the case of P. intermedia, the growth inhibitory activity was found in 13 types of natural plant extracts such as Raphanus sativus, Angelica acutiloba, Akebia quinata, Belamcanda chinensis, Inula britannics, Houttuynia cordata, Cinnamomum cassia, Aster tataricus, Melia azedarach, Scutellaria baicalensis, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, Kalopanax Pictus etc. For A. actinomycetemcomitans, anti-bacterial effect was exhibited in Belamcanda chinensis, Cinnamomum cassia, Kalopanax Pictus, Phellodendron amurense, Coptis chinensis. The Coptis chinensis showed the most excellent growth inhibitory activity in all organic solvent fragment, while P. intermedia showed the growth inhibitory activity in Belamcanda chinensis, Cinnamomum cassia, Meliaazedarach, Phellodendron amurense, and Coptis chinensis.

  • Agricultural pests, diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) and two-spotted spider mite (Teyranychus urticae), are becoming major pests in human dwellings in a variety of ways across the world. For management of these pests, the essential oils of Coriandrum sativum and Cinnamomum cassia prepared by steam distillation, hexane extraction and supercritical extraction methods were evaluated for the insecticidal effects. Using the contact bioassay, the $LD_{50}$ value of C. sativum oil by steam distillation extraction method was $30.59{\mu}g/cm^2$ against M. persicae adults. The $LD_{50}$ values of C. cassia oils prepared by steam distillation and hexane extraction methods were 5.96 and $4.64{\mu}g/cm^2$, respectively, against T. urticae adults, and $LD_{50}$ value of the essential oil by supercritical extraction method was $6.50{\mu}g/cm^2$ against M. persicae adults. This study showed that C. sativum and C. cassia oils could be an effective natural acaricide and insecticide against agricultural pests.

  • In order to obtain anticancer substances from natural products, extracts of dry herbs, which have long been used to treat cancer or canter-like diseases in oriental countries, were screened. Extracts were made with hot water and/or organic solvents. With the extracts we treated murine leukemic L1210 cells growing in Fischer's medium. After 48 hours of incubation, cells were counted and concentrations of dry extracts to achieve 50 percent inhibition of the control growth, ED$_{50}$ values, were determined. Among the 38 species of medicinal plants tested, water extracts of six species showed ED$_{50}$ values of substantially low. Further extraction with organic solvents could reduce their ED$_{50}$ values within the range of the NCI quality control limit. The promising species as potential sources of anti-cancer substances included Cinnamomum cassia, Citrus trifoliata, Coptis japonica, Panax ginseng, Phellodendron amurense, and Scutellaria baikalensis.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of functional herbal foods on the growth of intestinal lactic acid bacteria. When Bifidobacterium breve and human intestinal microflora were inoculated in the general anaerobic medium which contained each functional food water extract, most of functional herbal foods induced the growth of lactic acid bacteria by decreasing pH of the broth. The pH decreasing effects of Liriipe platyphylla and Platycodon grandiflorum were excellent. The growth of lactic acid bacteria effectively inhibited the bacterial enzymes, $\beta$-glucosidase and $\beta$ -glucuronidase. Eugenia caryophyllata and Liriipe platyphylla potently inhibited the productivity of P -glucosidase of B. breve and human intestinal bacteria. Cinnamomum cassia, Gardenia jasminoides and Platycodon grandiflorum potently inhibited the productivity of $\beta$-glucuronidase of human intestinal bacteria. The growth component isolated from Platycodon grandiflorum was sucrose (compound B).
