  • This paper describes a step-down AC voltage regulator using an AC chopper and auxiliary transformer, which is a series connected to the main input. The detail design of the AC regulator, logic and PWM pattern of the AC chopper is described and the three-phase AC regulator using two single­phase AC choppers with a three transformer configuration is proposed for three-phase application. The proposed three-phase system has the advantages of lower system cost due to reduced switch number and gate driver circuit as well as advantages of decreased size and weight because it uses a series compensated scheme. The proposed AC regulator has many benefits such as fast voltage control, high efficiency and simple control logic. Experimental results indicate that it can be used as a step-down AC voltage regulator for power saving purposes very efficiently.

  • This paper presents an improved three-phase PFC power rectifier with a three-phase diode rectifier cascaded four-switch boost converter. Its operating principle contains the operating principle of two conventional three-phase PFC power rectifiers: one switch boost converter type and a two switch boost converter type. The operating characteristics of the four switch boost converter type three-phase PFC power rectifier are evaluated from a practical point of view, being compared with one switch boost converter type and two switch boost converter topologies.

  • In the case of an urban rail chopper type subway train, varistors have been installed for protecting usual electronic equipments, semiconductor devices(diodes, transistors, thyrister, etc.) communications, measuring, control device and absorbing opening & closing surge of electromagnetic valve. These varistors were steadily reduced dielectric strength as becoming superannuated. Thus there is a problem that reacts more sensitive at the same surge in the general control operation. On existing maintenance, there is not specific standard to replace superannuated varistor. So when maintaining chopper type subway train, all varistors or old varistors that workers checked a discoloration & crack with the naked eye and noticed degradation smell by deterioration are replaced. This study suggests detail standards for judgement that varistors are good or bad chopper type subway train, and it draw a efficient maintenance which efficient maintenance can check more easy the degradation properties variation.

Transient Characteristics of Separately Excited d-c Motor Driven by Thyristor d-c Chopper (Thyristor 직류 Chopper방식으로 구동되는 직류타여자식 전동기의 과도특성해석법)

  • The transient characteristics of separately excited d-c motor driven by thyristor d-c chopper is studied in this paper. The armature controlled system is applied. As a result of theoretrical analysis the following conculsions were drawn: (1) For the transient analysis, it is recognized that the state transition analysis is a more general method and powerful tool than the state equation method or signal flow graph method, although it includes iterative matrix calculations. And the system is dealt with a finite width sampled-data system in the state transition analysis. (2) The transient characteristics of the motor angular velocity and its torque to the sampling duration variation are compared with those due to the amplitude variation of d-c chopper voltage as follows. The attenuation rate of the transient characteristics is equal in both cases, but the initial value of the transient characteristics in former case is greater than in latter case. (3) The roots of characteristics equation of the system lie inside the unit circle of the Z-plane. Therefor the system is stable. Further it is found that as the sampling duration is decreased the relative stability is lessened.

  • In this paper, bilateral variable-ratio dc chopper system for electric vehicle is proposed. We present the method which is able to simplify the main synthetic chopper circuit by selecting among the forward powering, forward regenerative braking, backward powering, and backward regenerative braking only by control signal. By conducting the experiment with separately excited dc motor, it is confirmed that two quadrant chopper can drive four quadrant operation.

  • The choice of control method and circuit must be decided after a broad inspection with the characteristics of load and control elements as well as that of electric and mechanical nature. In the present study, Pulse width modulated(PWM) SCR chopper was chosen and for the electric commutation, Jones' forced method was taken bacause of its having enough reverse bias energy. Objectives of experimentation by this system are; 1) the condition of SCR as a gate trigger pulse. 2) the observation of phenomena at the time of forced commutation 3) the experimentation on characteristics of speed control by PWM chopper. Above experimentation shows good characteristics, however, in the limit of narrow gap between the ON and OFF pulses, a complete control was not possible. So, that must be the point to be studied further alone with the harmonics influence.

  • This paper presents a novel circuit topology of a high efficiency single-phase power conditioner. This power conditioner is composed of time-sharing sinewave absolute pulse width modulated boost chopper with a bypass diode in the first power processing stage and time-sharing sinewave pulse width modulated full-bridge inverter in the second power processing stage operated by time-sharing dual mode pulse pattern control scheme. The unique operating principle of the two power processing stage with time-sharing dual mode sinewave modulation scheme is described with a design example. This paper proposes also a sinewave tracking voltage controlled soft switching PWM boost chopper with a passive auxiliary edge-resonant snubber. The new conceptual operating principle of this novel power conditioner related to new energy utilization system is presented and discussed through the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we compose of the utility phovoltaic system with the stepdown chopper and the current source inverter to reduce pulsation of dc current and dc reactor. We study that control several ways(twice frequency of utility voltage square pulse and without the chopper) of chopper part. Therefore if voltage across the dc reactor equal to zero, it is decreased. And we control modulation factor of the chopper to operate at maximum power point around of solar cell.

  • This paper deals with an observer design for a P-Cell Chopper. The goal is to reduce drastically the number of sensors in such system by using an observer in order to estimate all the capacitor voltages. Furthermore, considering an instantaneous model of a p-cell chopper, an interconnected observer is designed in order to estimate the capacitor voltages and some parameters of the model. This is realized by using only the load current measurement. Simulation results are given in order to illustrate the performance of such observer. To show the validity of our approach, experimental based a DSP results are presented.
