  • This research examines how consumer preferences for products are affected by attribute resemblance, which refers to the degree to which a product is similar with other products that are being evaluated together. It is expected that the influence of attribute resemblance on attitude and choice is moderated by attribute familiarity, which is tested in three empirical studies. Studies 1 and 2 examine the effects on the attitude toward the product and show that the positive influence of attribute resemblance on attitude is stronger when attribute are less (vs. more) familiar. Study 3 tests the effects on choice for which attribute resemblance can have a negative influence because of the increase in the competition with similar options. For choice, the attribute resemblance has a positive influence when attributes are less familiar but has a negative influence when attributes are more familiar.

  • Purpose: Previous literature shows that a price promotion serves as a negative cue of product quality especially when consumers have no additional information about the product's other attributes. In this research, we explore how the effect of price promotions on consumers' perceptions of product quality changes depending on their ability to compare promoted product attributes with competitive products' attributes. Research design, data and methodology: Specifically, we use a series of scenario-based lab experiments using different types of products and explore if attribute alignability among competing products in a consumer's choice set influences consumers' ability to compare the product attributes and perceived quality. Results: Our study findings show that high attribute alignability among products makes consumers easier to compare the product attributes and thereby focus more on non-price information than price information. We also show that attribute alignability serves as a moderator and decreases perceived quality when the promotion level is higher. Therefore, the attribute alignability weakens the negative impact of a price promotion on consumers' perceived product quality. Conclusions: Our study findings provide new insights on how to implement price promotion strategies while keeping products' perceived quality, by considering the product's relationships with competing products in a choice set.

  • The purposes of this study were to explore consumer preference for the types of nutrition label of cereal products and to identify some influencing factors on purchase intention and choice probability of nutrition-labeled products. First, most of the respondents preferred the nutrition fact panel with traffic light-GDA(TL-GDA), while the nutrition fact panel only type and the nutrition fact panel with front-of-package(FOP) type were preferred by few respondents. However, consumers evaluated higher for TL-GDA type and FOP symbol type, while the nutrition fact panel only type was evaluated much lower. Second, consumer preference for label types was partially related with 'eating breakfast' and consumer evaluations of the types of labels for the nutrition fact panel only and the nutrition fact panel with FOP were found to be significantly different by gender. Lastly, both purchase intention and choice probability for nutrition-labeled products were found to be significantly influenced by information search and product attitude. In addition, choice probability was found to be significantly influenced by individual characteristics such as gender and grade. It is necessary to find the relationship between nutrition labels and consumer response as this can help consumers make a better choice of food as well as providing some useful information on consumers to the related parties such as companies and consumer organizations.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the value of attributes of agricultural products in school food service using hedonic price model and choice experiment. In the case of potatoes, bean sprouts, and tomatoes, environment-friendly agricultural products rather than conventional ones, and domestic price premiums exist rather than Chungnam. The higher the price, the higher the margin rate. Conventional agricultural products were more profitable than environment-friendly ones, and domestic products were more profitable than Chungnam. In consumer preferences, environment-friendly agricultural products are preferred over conventional agricultural products and local products (Chungnam, Cheonan, Asan) rather than domestic ones. This is the opposite result of the Hedonic price model estimation that Chungnam has a lower price premium than domestic in the case of origin. This study is meaningful by analyzing the attribute value of agricultural products used for school meals in Chungnam and comparing them with the willingness to pay consumers. With the results of this study, it is necessary that discussions on supplementing the value of local products used in Chungnam school food service.
