  • High concentration of chlorophyll a occurred around the Ulleung Warm Eddy off Ulleung Island in the East Sea of Korea in spring season. The abnormal distributions of chlorophyll a were captured by satellite remote sensing and measured field data. The temporal and spatial scale of the abnormal distributions were around 20days and 50km diameter off Ullung Island. The anomalies were quantified b)'estimated chlorophyll a derived from OCM and SeaWiFS ocean color data from 2000 to 2004. The origin of abnormal hish concentrations was estimated by this study. It was that suspended material discharged from the Nakdong River and the coastal water located in the southeastern part of Korean Peninsula moved to northeastern coast, and then moved to off Ullung island, The high chlorophyll a concentrations including inorganic materials were accumulated by anticyclonic eddy such as the Ullung Warm Eddy around Ullung island in the East Sea of Korea in spring season.

  • Field experiment was conducted to get the basic information about the difference in color and plastid pigments at the different stage of harvest of flue-cured tobacco cultivated in paddy field, and compared to upland ones. All tested crops were primed in lots of 3 to 4 at each priming, beginning at the bottom of the plant. Leaf pigments and chromatic values of tobacco leaves were determined in samples collected at weekly intervals, and according to analyses obtained from 4 stalk positions. By the degree of maturity, leaves harvested were separated with visual characters into four classes of immature, mature, ripe and mellow. regardless of stalk position, chlorophyll contents was higher in the order of immature > mature > ripe > mellow, respectively. In fresh leaves, chlorophyll levels was higher with ascending stalk position. chlorophyll a and b in cured leaves were less than 10% of the amount present at harvest, and it was estimated that maturity condition also influenced the rates of degradation of plastid pigments. Fully mature leaves of upland diverted from paddy field showed slightly higher in chlorophyll contents than in those of upland tobacco ones but somewhat lowered in $L^*$ and $b^*$ values, and there was no difference in $a^*$ value.

  • This study was carried out in order to closely examine the growth and the physiological response by shading levels of a container seedling of Daphniphyllum macropodum which is known as the species of having shade tolerance in a warm temperature evergreen broad-leaved tree. The shading treatment was regulated with the shading level of full sunlight, and 35%, 55%, 75% of full sunlight. As a result of surveying the height and the root collar diameter growth by the shading level, the height was the highest with 13.2 cm under 35% of shading. The root collar diameter was the highest with 4.99 mm under full sunlight. The organ-based (leaves, shoot and root) dry mass production and the whole dry mass production were higher with 1.38 g, 0.47 g, 0.87 g, 2.72 g, respectively, in order of 35% shading. As for chlorophyll a, b, and the total chlorophyll content, the highest chlorophyll content was shown under 75% of shading with the relatively highest shading level. The ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b (a/b) was the highest under 35% of shading. The photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency were the highest with $12.3{\mu}molCO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, $0.27molH_2O{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, $3.53{\mu}molCO_2{\cdot}mmol^{-1}H_2O$, respectively, under 35% of shading. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, D. macropodum grows nicely by maintaining 35% shading.

  • To improve the color stability of chlorophyll in young barley leaf used as functional green biomaterial, the absorption spectrum, color values, and antioxidative activities of young barley leaf (YBL) treated with zinc ion solutions were investigated. The small pieces of fresh YBL in aqueous solution mixtures were autoclaved twice at $110^{\circ}C$ for 30 min (pH 5). Distilled water (BLA), 0.01% zinc chloride (BLAZ), 0.01% zinc citrate (BLAC), and 0.01% zinc lactate (BLAL) solutions were used. Treated YBL powders were extracted with 80% EtOH for 4 h. Chlorophyll a and b contents differed with different treatments. BLA decreased chlorophyll a and b contents, whereas others were maintained. Absorbance spectrums of chlorophyll at 400~700 nm showed different maximum peak wavelengths. After heating in acidic and neutral solutions (pH 3, 5, and 7), the colors of YBL and BLA changed from green to olive green, whereas BLAZ, BLAC, and BLAL remained green color. The antioxidative activities showed higher values in YBL extract than in treated extracts. From the above results, autoclaved YBL in zinc solution would increase the color stability and maintain green color regardless of acid and heat treatments.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effects of light intensity and soil water regimes on the growth of ginseng seedling. The results were as follows: 1. The maximum light intensity and optimum temperature in 1,le photosynthesis of ginseng seedling were 10,000 lux and 23 $^{\circ}C$. Respiration rate was increased at high temperature. 2. Air and soil temperature under the shading were increased as the increase of light intensity but soil water contents were decreased as the increase of light intensity, whereas air and soil temperature were decreased as the increase of precipitation under the shade b5: soil water contents were increased as the increase of precipitation under the shade. 3. The higher the transmittance of the shade, the greater the specific leaf weight (S.L.W.) and stomatal density. In contrast, however, the contents of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a and b, and stomatal length was decreased. There was no any significant difference light intensity of the a/b ratio of chlorophyll. 4. The highest photosynthesis was occurred in ginseng leaves grown under the shade 5% L.T.R. and net photosynthesis rates increased with increasing soil water contents. 5. Optimum condition for usable seedling yield were 5% L.T.R. and 3.3% precipitation under the shade. Useless seedling increased with increasing precipitation under the shade.

  • This study was carried out to investigate changes in salinity, pH, ascorbic acid, chlorophyll and its derivatives of the different gochu-jangachi (unripe hot pepper preserved in soybean paste and soy sauce). As the fermentation proceeded, the salinity of these samples stored at 15$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that stored at 5$^{\circ}C$. The pH of samples was slowly lowered and little different during the fermentation at 5$^{\circ}C$. In the during fermentation at 15$^{\circ}C$, the pH of gochu-jangachi with soybean paste was maintained over 5 until 60 days and that of gochu-jangachi with soy sauce was dropped under 5 after 32 days, after that the value was slowly decreased. As fermentation time passed, the content of ascorbic acid in gochu-jangachi was decreased rapidly at 15$^{\circ}C$ than at 5$^{\circ}C$ and that was disappeared after 16 days (soybean paste) and 20 days (soy sauce). In both samples, the degradation of chlorophyll a was faster than chlorophyll b, especially at 15$^{\circ}C$. The degradation of chlorophylls or production of pheophytin and pheophorbide were closely related to the ascorbic acid content during fermentation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the contents of antioxidative components from pulpy and seed in wild haw (Crataegus pinnatifida $B_{UNGE}$). Pulpy and seed of haw were smashed, then measured for color properties, antioxidative components of ascorbic acid, phytic acid, proanthocyanidin, anthocyanin, total carotene, ${\beta}$-carotene, lycopene, chlorophyll a, b and tannin. The $a^*$, $b^*$ and $C^*$ values of seed were significantly lower than pulpy, but $L^*$ and $H^{\circ}$ values were higher than that of pulpy. Ascorbic acid contents of pulpy and seed were found to be $10.89{\pm}1.69mg/100g$ and $1.45{\pm}0.16mg/100g$, respectively. Phytic acid, proanthocyanidin, total carotene and tannin contents of pulpy and seed were $689.17{\pm}3.63mg/g$, $597.78{\pm}2.93mg/g$; $355.61{\pm}19.39mg/g$, $49.12{\pm}4.97mg/g$; $8.32{\pm}0.42mg%$, $0.80{\pm}0.01mg%$; $7.53{\pm}0.09mg/g$, $1.02{\pm}0.03mg/g$, respectively. Similarly, ${\beta}$-carotene, lycopene, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents of pulpy also displayed higher values than that of seed. On the contrary, anthocyanin content of seed ($4.24{\pm}0.33mg/L$) was remarkably higher than pulpy ($0.99{\pm}0.62mg/L$). The results showed that pulpy could be severed as great natural antioxidant and biohealth functional food.

  • We have investigated needle life span, photosynthetic pigment and nitrogen allocation pattern in the needle of Picea jezoensis in the three populations (Gyebangsan, Deogyusan and Jirisan) to find out growth environmental condition which needs the strategy development of conservation and restoration against population decline. Needle survival rate was the highest in Gyebangsan (87.0%) and the lowest in Jirisan (71.6%), and it decreased with the increase of needle age. Needle chlorophyll a and b in Deogyusan and Jirisan showed higher content in older needle, but chlorophyll content in Gyebangsan was the highest in 2-year-old needle. Carotenoid content was the highest in the needle in Gyebangsan, and it increased along with needle age. Chlorophyll a/b ratio showed the highest value in Jirisan and the lowest value in Gyebangsan. Chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio decreased with needle age, Needle nitrogen content was the highest in Deogyusan (1.51%) and the lowest in Gyebangsan (1.40%), and the older needle had the lower content. In contrast, the highest chlorophyll/nitrogen ratio represented the oldest needle.

  • Foliar treatment with different concentrations of potassium chloride (KCl) to mulberry plants resulted in higher level of total chlorophyll, total sugars, soluble protein, in vivo nitrate reductase activity (NRA), net photosynthetic rate (NPR), pWUE and leaf yield. Optimal concentration was found to be 10.0 mM KCl with limited irrigation provided in the mulberry plantation planted in 90 ${times}$ 90 cm spacing. The deleterious effect of soil moisture stress condition has been found to be overcome by KCl foliar spray twice at 15 days interval. Regression and correlation coefficients were analyzed, and a strong positive correlation was found between chlorophyll and total sugars, soluble protein and in vivo nitrate reductase activity, leaf dry weight and net photosynthetic rate and pWUE and net photosynthetic rate.

  • Seasonal distributions of nutrients and particulate organic matter were investigated in Asan Bay, Korea. Most of nutrients were high in August and low in February. The atomic ratios of inorganic nitrogen to phosphorous were close to Redfield ratio except in May when the ratio was 24.8. In May, nutrient concentrations except phosphorous decreased with salinity until $31.5{\sim}32.0%0$, but the concentrations increased again with salinity, impling that there were nutrient input sources within the estuary. Howerer, significant inverse relationships between nutrients and salinity in August suggest that nutrient sources were river discharge. Maximum chlorophyll a concentrations occurred in May. Relatively low ratios of $R_b$ to $R_a$($R_b$: fluorescence before acidification; $R_a$: fluorescence after acidification) during the study periods indicate that phytoplankton were not in good physiological condition. Relatively low ratio of particulate biogenic silica(PBSi) to particulate organic carbon(POC) and high ratios of PBSi and POC to chlorophyll a during the study periods suggest input of non-living detrital PBSi and POC from bottom in Asan Bay, where strong tidal mixing occurs.
