Background: This study analyzed the physiological adaptations of a woody plant, Vitex rotundifolia, in Goraebul coastal sand dunes from May to September 2022. Environmental factors and physiological of plants growing under field and controlled (pot) conditions were compared. Results: Photosynthesis in plants growing in the coastal sand dunes and pots was the highest in June 2022 and July 2022, respectively. Chlorophyll fluorescence indicated the presence of stress in the coastal sand dune environment. The net photosynthesis rate (PN) and Y(II) were highest in June in the coastal sand dune environment and July in the pot environment. In August and September, Y(NPQ) increased in the plants in the coastal sand dune environment, showing their photoprotective mechanism. Chlorophyll a and b contents in the pot plant leaves were higher than those in the coastal sand dune plant leaves; however, chlorophyll-a/b ratio was higher in the coastal sand dune plant leaves than in the pot plant leaves, suggesting a relatively high photosynthetic efficiency. Carotenoid content in the coastal sand dune plant leaves was higher in August and September 2022 than that in the pot plant leaves. Leaf water and soluble carbohydrate contents of the coastal sand dune plant leaves decreased in September 2022, leading to rapid leaf abscission. Diurnal variations in photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence in both environments showed peak activity at 12:00 hour; however, the coastal sand dune plants had lower growth rates and Y(II) than the pot plants. Plants in the coastal sand dunes had higher leaf water and ion contents, indicating that they adapted to water stress through osmotic adjustments. However, plants growing in the coastal sand dunes exhibited reduced photosynthetic activity and accelerated decline due to seasonal temperature decreases. These findings demonstrate the adaptation mechanisms of V. rotundifolia to water stress, poor soils, and high temperature conditions in coastal sand dunes. Conclusions: The observed variations indicate the responses of the V. rotundifolia to environmental stress, and may reveal its survival strategies and adaptation mechanisms to stress. The results provide insights into the ecophysiological characteristics of V. rotundifolia and a basis for the conservation and restoration of damaged coastal sand dunes.

Two tobacco cultivars (Nicotiana tabacum L.), Bel-B and Bel-W3, tolerant and sensitive to ozone, respectively, were grown in a greenhouse supplied with charcoal filtered air and exposed to 200 ppb ozone for 4 hr. Effects on chlorophyll fluorescence, net photosynthesis, and stomatal conductance are described. Quantum yield was calculated from chlorophyll fluorescence and the initial slope of the assimilation-light curve measured by the gas exchange method. Only the sensitive cultivar, Bel-W3, developed visual injury symptoms on up to 50% of the $5^{th}$ leaf. The maximum net photosynthetic rate of ozone-treated plants was reduced 40% compared to control plants immediately after ozone fumigation in the tolerant cultivar; however, photosynthesis recovered by 24 hr post fumigation and remained at the same level as control plants. On the other hand, ozone exposure reduced maximum net photosynthesis up to 50%, with no recovery, in the sensitive cultivar apparently causing permanent damage to the photosystem. Reductions in apparent quantum efficiency, calculated from the assimilation-light curve, differed between cultivars. Bel-B showed an immediate depression of 14% compared to controls, whereas, Bel-W3 showed a 27% decline. Electron transport rate (ETR), at saturating light intensity, decreased 58% and 80% immediately after ozone treatment in Bel-B and Bel-W3, respectively. Quantum yield decreased 28% and 36% in Bel-B and Bel-W3, respectively. It can be concluded that ozone caused a greater relative decrease in linear electron transport than maximum net photosynthesis, suggesting greater damage to PSII than the carbon reduction cycle.

In order to find out the environmental factors influencing the catch of anchovy lift nets in kamakbay, the three oceanographic factors, i. e., the water temperature, the salinity, the amount of chlorophyll-a were observed respectively from August 1 to 12, 1995 and from September 20 to 26, 1995, and each of them was compared with the catch of anchovy by the lift net. The results obtained are summerized as follow : 1) The water temperature was ranged from 17.3 to 29.6$^{\circ}C$ and its difference between the surface and bottom was 1 to 3$^{\circ}C$. In the three areas, A, B and C, the area A was the hightest in temperature, the area B being a second, and the area C being the lowest. 2) The salinity was ranged from 32.20 to 33.47$\textperthousand$ and its difference between the surface and bottom was not significant. In the three areas, the area A was the highest in salinity, the area B being a second, and the area C being the lowest. 3) The amount of chlorophyll-a was ranged from 0.19 to 5.30mg/m supper(3) and its difference among the three areas was not significant. Daily variation of the amount was very irregulated because the position operated was changed daily. 4) A comparison of the water temperature, the salinity and the amount of chlorophyll-a with the catch gave that the water temperature and the amount of chlorophyll-a had large influence on the catch and the salinity did not so. However, the influence of the amount of chlorophyll-a was larger than that of the water temperature. 5) The catch of anchovy was large respectively during two hours after sun set and during two hours before sun rise.
This study was carried out to investigate the growth responses of Pinus densiflora seedlings to enhanced UV-B environment for 16 weeks in the field condition. The seedlings were treated with one of three levels of UV-B dosages - ambient UV-B, ambient + 3.2, and ambient + 5.2 KJ m$^{-2}$day$^{-1}$ and the irradiation was performed at the stage before the germination, the fully expanded cotyledon, and the primary needles grown more than 0.8cm in length of the seedlings, respectively. Enhanced UV-B irradiation reduced the height and the root collar diameter growth, and dry mass production of the seedling, and T/R ratio was increased by the UV-B treatment. Difference in seedling growth was observed by difference in time of the UV-B treatment. Among the seedlings which were treated with ambient - 3.2 KJ m$^{-2}$day$^{-1}$, height and root collar diameter growth was relatively high in the seedling received the UV-B treatment at the stage before the germination. The lowest dry mass production was observed in the seedlings received the UV-B at stage of cotyledon both in two levels of enhanced UV-B treatment. Chlorophyll concentration was reduced by enhanced UV-B irradiation, and chlorophyll a/b ratio was increased by the UV-B treatment.
A CAB cDNA vector(pKGCAB), encoding the light harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding protein in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer), was constructed with the CaMV35S promoter of plant expression vector. The chimeric vector was transformed into tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum cv. NC 82) using Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA 4404 strain, and the transgenic tobacco plant CAB-TP2 was selected. Photosynthetic rates of the CAB-TP2 plant at before-flowering stage were increased about 20% under low irradiance conditions of quantum 100 and 500 $\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ , however, the rates were similar to those of NC 82 under quantum 1000 and 2000 $\mu$mol.m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ conditions. The plants were germinating under low- or normal irradiance condition and the quantum yield of photosystem III were measured. The differences of the Fv/Em values between conditions were 0.07 and 0.01 in NC 82 and CAB-TP2, respectively. The mature leaves in the position 8-10 of the CAB-TP2 at before-flowering stage revealed l0% higher Fv/Fm values in range of 0.759 to 0.781 and 40% more chlorophyll contents of 70-93mg/$m\ell$ than those of normal NC 82. These data suggest the possibility that the increase in photosynthetic activity of leaves under low light intensity in the canopy of CAB-TP2 transgenic tobacco might lead to increase the quality of lower tobacco leaves.

This study was conducted to investigate seasonal changes on height, root collar diameter, shoot growth, biomass and chlorophyll contents of Pinus strobus seedlings (two-year old) grown under different light environments in Sangju National University Nursery. Four shade treatments provided seedlings with full sunlight (1800 umo1 m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ), 75% of full sunlight (1350 umo1 m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ), 50% of full sunlight (900 ,umo1 m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ) and 25% of full sunlight (450 umo1 m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ). Planting density in four light intensities was 30 cm$\times$30cm. In each treatment, 10 trees were planted and height, diameter at root collar, shoot growth, biomass and chlorophyll contents (chlorophyll a, band a+ b) were measured. The highest height, root collar diameter, shoot growth and biomass in Pinus strobus seedlings were observed at full sunlight. Specially, root biomass was the most sensitive tree components part and strongly associated with decreases in the total biomass under low light intensity. The lowest chlorophyll contents (Chlorophyll a, band a+ b) were shown at 25% of sunlight, the lowest light intensity in this study.
This study was conducted to obtain the basic information for the salt stress of Italian Ryegrass. Fourteen cultivars including 7 diploid and 7 tetraploid were subjected to eight levels of NaCl treatments during germination and early seedling stages. Germination percentage decreased remarkably over 300mM of NaCl concentration. The NaCl concentration that inhibited germination of 50% of the viable seeds in the cultivars was 344mM. The decreasing degree of germination percentage was higher in tetraploid type than in diploid type. The varietal difference of germination percentage was shown to be very conspicuous as the NaCl concentration increased. Top dry weight in 166 mM NaCl was decreased by 50% compared with that of control. Inhibition of NaCl appeared to be more in early seedling stage than in germination stage. Top dry weight of cultivars in NaCl stress was not related with germination capacity. Root dry weight in 148mM NaCl decreased by 50% compared with that of control. Root dry weight of cultivars was significantly correlated with top dry weight in NaCl treatment. Top dry weight and root dry weight was higher in diploid type than in tetraploid type at each 8 levels of NaCl concentration. Total chlorophyll content increased with the increase of NaCl concentration and the degree of increase in chlorophyll a was higher than that in chlorophyll b. Chlorophyll a was higher in tetraploid type than in diploid type. But chlorophyll b was higher in diploid type than in tetraploid type. There were significant correlation between chlorophyll a and top dry weight of cultivars over 150mM of NaCl concentration. Free proline content accumulated remarkably in NaCl treatment compared with control and was not difference between diploid type and tetraploid type. Free proline content of cultivars was not related with top dry weight in NaCl treatment.
To furnish basic data for the utilization of leaf mustard as a raw material of salted and fermented vegetable food, the contents of carotenoids and chlorophylls of Dolsan Leaf Mustard(DLM) were investigated. Total carotenoid content of DLM was 4.75 mg%, and the compositions were ${\beta}-carotene(80.91%)$, lutein(13.07%), lutein epoxide(3.93%). The contents of chlorophyll a and b were 4.1 and 1.5 mg%, and leaf was 7.4- and 8.1-fold, respectively, higher than leaf stalk. The ratios of chlorophyll a/b in leaf (2.7:1) and leaf stalk(3.0:1) were similar to those of other vegetables.
Effects of chlorophyll and visible light exposure on the volatile formations and headspace oxygen content were studied in lard model systems at $55^{\circ}C$. Samples with or without addition of chlorophyll under light underwent photosensization or photooxidation, respectively. Total volatiles (TI) in lard with 5 ppm chlorophyll photosensization were 19 times higher than those in visible light photooxidized samples for 48 hr while TI in lard with chlorophyll in the dark were not significantly different from those in photooxidized samples (p>0.05). Headspace oxygen content in photosensitized lard decreased from 21 to 15% for 48 hr but that in photooxidized lard or that in lard with chlorophyll in the dark did not change significantly (p>0.05), which indicates that lard system used in this study is a photosensitizer-free model system and the presence of chlorophyll accelerated the lipid oxidation only under visible light. Oxidation mechanisms of photooxidation with or without presence of photosensitizers under visible light were not the same based on the difference of oxidized volatile profiles and headspace oxygen depletion.
The leaf tissues of 8 Populus species were examined to compare the chloroplast number and feature in guard cells and chlorophyll quantity. 1. The chloroplast number ranged from 10 to 30, but difference in number were not significant among species. 2. The size of chloroplast varied from $3m{\mu}$ to $6m{\mu}$, in diameter. The shape was generally circular. 3. The chlorophyll quantities were significantly different among species. 4. The amount of chlorophyll b was 2.4 to 3.2 times greater than that of chlorophyll a.
