  • Disinfection of ballast water using chlorine dioxide was investigated under various initial microorganism contents, dose concentrations and pH values. Kinetics of microorganism inactivation and byproduct generation of chlorine dioxide treatment were compared with the chlorine treatment. Results of treatments with chlorine dioxide concentrations of 0 to $10mg\;Cl_2/L$ showed that The optimum concentration of chlorine dioxide required for disinfection of ballast water was 1 mg/L. The difference among the second order reaction constants for bacterial disinfection at pH 7.2 to 9.2 for chlorine dioxide was less than 5% for both bacteria. This result implied that the bactericidal effects of chlorine dioxide was independent of the pH in the examined range. On the other hand, the inactivation kinetics of chlorine for E. coli and Enterococcus decreased by 17% and 25%, respectively, when pH increased from 7.2 to 9.2. The bactericidal power of chlorine dioxide was superior to sodium hypochlorite above pH 8.2, the average pH value of sea water. Furthermore, treatments of chlorine dioxide generated less harmful byproducts than chlorine and had a long-term disinfection effect on bacteria and phytoplankton from the results of experiment for 30 days. Chlorine dioxide would be a promising alternative disinfectant for ballast water.

  • In this study, a complete set of recirculating cooling water system and the required instruments were built in a semi-industrial-scale and a 50 g/h ozone generation plant and a chlorine system were designed for cooling water treatment. Both chlorination and ozonation treatment methods were studied and the results were analyzed during two 45-days periods. The concentrations of ozone and chlorine in recirculating water were constant at 0.1 mg/lit and 0.6 mg/lit, respectively. In ozone treatment, by increasing the concentration cycle to 33%, the total water consumption decreased by 26% while 11.5% higher energy efficiency achieved thanks to a better elimination of bio-films. In case of Carbon Steel, the corrosion rate reached to 0.012 mm/yr and 0.025 mm/yr for the ozonation and chlorination processes, respectively. Furthermore, consumptions of the anti-corrosion and anti-sedimentation materials in the ozone cooling water treatment were reduced about 60% without using any oxidant and non-oxidant biocides. No significant changes in sediment load were seen in ozonation compared to chlorination. The Chemical Oxygen Demand of the blow-down in ozonation method decreased to one-sixth of that in the chlorination method. Moreover, the soluble iron and water turbidity in the ozonation method were reduced by 97.5% and 70%, respectively. Although no anaerobic bacteria were seen in the cooling water at the proper concentration range of ozone and chlorine, the aerobic bacteria in chlorine and ozone treatment methods were 900 and 200 CFU/ml, respectively. The results showed that the payback time for the ozone treatment is about 2.6 years.

  • In the drinking water treatment, the aesthetic and color problem are caused by the manganese which is occurring and present in the surface, lake and ground water. The most common treatment processes for removing manganese are known for oxidation followed by filtration. In this study, the manganese sand process was used for removing manganese with river bank filtrate as a source. In the manganese sand process, the residual chlorine and pH are important factors on the continuous manganese oxidation. In addition, space velocity (SV) and alum dosage are play a role of manganese removal. Even though manganese removal increased with increasing chlorine concentration, the control of residual chlorine is actually difficult in this process As the results of tests, the residual chlorine concentration as well as manganese removal were effectively achieved at pH 7.5. The optimum attached manganese concentration on manganese sand was confirmed to 0.3mg/L by the experimental result of a typical sand converting to manganese sand.

  • This study was carried out to bleach the Oakwood kraft pulp without the elemental chlorine using the xylanase or wastewater(We : wastewater enzymes) effluented from the submerged biofilter reactor containing the fungi, Phanerorhaete sordida YK-624. So in this research, the proper treatment conditions (pH, temperature, dosage and time) were investigated respectively. And after the various kinds of multistage bleaching of pulps, the properties of pulps were tested. From the experimental results, we can conclude as follows. In the treatments of Oakwood kraft pulps with xylanase, the proper pH, temperature, enzyme dosage and time were 8.0, $35^{\circ}C$ , 400 EXU/kg and 1 hr. respectively. And in the case of treatment with a wastewater(We) effluented from the submerged biofilter reactor, the proper pH, temperature and time were 5.5, $37^{\circ}C$ and 2 hr. respectively. On the other hand, Oakwood kraft pulps were bleached by the method of a multistage bleaching using xylanase or We instead of elemental chlorine Consequently the strengthes and brightnesses of pulps bleached by the method mentioned above were lower than those of pulp bleached by the conventional method using the elemental chlorine. But it is possible to improve the brightnesses through the increase of chlorine dioxide dosage or use of hydrogen peroxide in the final bleaching stage.

  • After etching Al-Cu alloy films using SiCl4/Cl_2/He/CHF3 mixed gas plasma, the corrosion phenomenon at the grain boundary of the etched surface and a passivation layer on the etched surface with an SF6 plasma treatment subsequent to the etching were studied. In Al-Cu alloy system, corrosion occurs rapidly on the etched surface by residual chlorine atoms, and it occurs dominantly at the grain boundaries rather than the crystalline surfaces. To prevent corrosion, the SF6 gas plasma treatment subsequent to etching was carried out. The passivation layer is composed of fluorine-related compounds on the etched Al-Cu surface after the SF6 treatment, and it suppresses effectively corrosion on the surface as the SF6 treatment pressure increases. Corrosion could be suppressed successfully with the SF6 treatment at a total pressure of 300 mTorr. To investigate the reason why corrosion could be suppressed with the SF6 treatment, behaviors of chlorine and fluorine were studied by various analysis techniques. It was also found that the residual chlorine incorporated at the grain boundary of the etched surface accelerated corrosion and could not be removed after the SF6 plasma treatment.

  • In order to investigate the effect of chlorine disinfectant against white spot baculovirus (WSBV), 5, 10, or 30 ppm of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was treated to the WSBV-infected shrimp, Penaeus chinensis. In contrast with the non-treated control, no shrimp was dead after of sodium hypochlorite treatment. This result indicated that WSBV was inactivated by chlorine treatment. No inactivation of WSBV was observed by 10, 20, 30 ppm of povidon-iodine treatment. WSBV was also inactivated by 2, 4 hr sunlight exposure and by 1, 2, 3 hr drying. WSBV was inactivated very effectively by addition of fresh water on sea water.

  • In order to secure microbiological safety and quality of commercial vegetable sprouts, buckwheat seeds and sprouts were investigated for their microbiological flora and for the effect of chlorine treatment on quality. Microbiological analyses showed that major inherent bacteria including Enterobacter, Sphingomonas, and Klebsiella were found in commercial buckwheat sprouts with a population size ranging from $10^5$ to $10^7$ CFU/g. In addition, buckwheat seeds had a similar microbial flora to sprouts. Foodborne pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes were not detected in the sprout or in the seed samples. Chlorine treatment with 50-150 ppm sodium hypochlorite noticeably reduced viable bacteria cell counts of the sprouts by about 1 log. However, no significant difference was observed among the different chlorine concentrations. After storage for 7 days at $5^{\circ}C$, the sprouts treated with 100-150 ppm chlorine showed higher sensory scores in visual quality than the others (p<0.05). The results indicated that proper pretreatment, such as dipping in chlorinated water, could confer a beneficial effect on the microbiological safety and visual quality of buckwheat sprouts.
