This study was carried out to examine effect of post-chlorine dosage reduction by ozonation and GAC process in the field plant for 3years in the "G" water purification plant in Seoul. And it is to compare GAC with BAC process in removal effects of TOC, THMs, THMFP, $UV_{254}$. As a result, chlorine dosage of ozonation and GAC(=BAC) is less demand than GAC. Seasonal reduction of chlorine demand is from about 37% to 59% with BAC, and from 24 to 46% with GAC. Higher reduction in BAC could be achieved. The efficiency of chlorine demand reduction with ozonation was depending on the organic carbon removal. $UV_{254}$ concentration is less about 0.13~0.74L/mg.m in BAC than GAC. Therefore, the combination of ozonation and GAC was more effective in reducing post-chlorine than the single GAC. TOC was also monitored, and results show that a linear relationship between TOC and chlorine demand is appropriate under each treatment process. It means that removal of organic matter(TOC) from finished water is necessary to reduce post-chlorine dosage in clear well and to minimize order of chlorine in distribution systems.
The effect of ozone on the formation and the removal of disinfection byproducts(DBPs) of chlorination process was studied to elucidate the performance of water treatment process. The samples of raw water, prechlorination process, and preozonation process were analyzed quantitatively according to the Standard Methods for the Examination of drinking water. As a result, most of total trihalomethanes(THMs) which were formed in prechlorine treatment process was not removed in the preozonation process. Most of haloacetic acids(HAAs), haloacetonitriles(HANs), and chloral hydrate(CH) was removed in sedimentation and biological activated carbon(BAC) filtration processes. However, DBPs were increased more or less by postchlorine step. In particular, the formation of THMs and HAAs depends on ozone more than chlorine, but, the formation of HANs and CH depends on chlorine more than ozone. The seasonal variation of DBPs concentration for the year needs to be investigated to study the temperature effect because DBPs strongly depend on temperature among various efficient factors.
UV technology is widely used in water and wastewater treatment. Many researches have been conducted on microbial disinfection and micro pollutant reduction with UV treatment. However, the study on NOM with UV has limited because low/medium pressure UV lamp is not sufficient to affect refractory organics such as NOM. Pulsed UV treatment using UV flash lamp can be operated in the pulsed mode with much greater peak intensity. The pulse duration is typically in microseconds, whereas the interval between pulses is in the order of milliseconds. The high intensity of pulsed UV would mineralize NOM itself as well as change the characteristics of NOM. Chlorine demand and DBPs formation is affected on the changed amounts and properties of NOM. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect on NOM, chlorine residual, and chlorinated DBPs formation with pulsed UV treatment.

Chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) can be used as a fumigant to kill insects. However, some insects can exhibit an evasive behavior from chlorine dioxide. This evasive behavior decreases the efficiency of the insecticidal activity of chlorine dioxide. This study tested a hypothesis that heat treatment suppresses the evasive behavior and synergizes the control efficacy of chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide fumigation killed the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, under direct exposure condition to the chemical for 12 h with median lethal concentrations of 383.67 ppm (153.63 - 955.78 ppm: 95% confidence interval) for larvae and 397.75 ppm (354.46 - 446.13 ppm: 95% confidence interval) for adults. However, when they were treated with enough diet flour, they exhibited an evasive behavior by entering the diet, which significantly decreased the control efficacy of the fumigant. To clarify the evasive behavior, the choice test of the adults were performed in Y tube arena. The test adults significantly avoided the diet treated with chlorine dioxide, while the antennatectomized adults lost the avoidance behavior. Heat treatment using $46^{\circ}C$ for 6 h killed only 10% or less of T. castaneum. Interestingly, most adults were observed to come out of the diet under the heat treatment. Chlorine dioxide treatment even at 400 ppm for 6 h did not kill any T. castaneum. However, the combined treatment of chlorine dioxide with the heat treatment for 6 h resulted in 95% mortality. These results indicated that heat treatment suppressed the evasive behavior of T. castaneum and synergized the control efficacy of the chlorine dioxide fumigant.
In this study, high-purity single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were prepared by removing the unreacted metal constituents and amorphous carbon impurities using a post-annealing process. Unlike conventional thermal processing techniques, this technique involved different gas atmospheres for efficient removal of impurities. A heat treatment was conducted in the presence of chlorine, oxygen, and chlorine + oxygen gases. The nanotubes demonstrated the best characteristics, when the heat treatment was conducted in the presence of a mixture of chlorine and oxygen gases. The scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet absorbance, and sheet resistance measurements showed that the heat treatment process efficiently removed the unreacted metal and amorphous carbon impurities from the as-synthesized SWCNTs. The high-purity SWCNTs exhibited improved electrical conductivities. Such high-purity SWCNTs can be used in various carbon composites for improving the sensitivity of gas sensors.
Many rivers and seas have been affected by environmental contamination. Therefore, city water supplies often require a high-degree purification treatment to provide safe drinking water. However, in order to achieve a high-degree purification treatment, a large amount of chlorine has to be added to sterilize city drinking water. The added chlorine reacts chemically with water and forms hypochlorous and chlorine ions. The hypochlorous ionizes with hypochlorous ions and hydrogen ions. As a result, the city water contains a large amount of chlorine ion. As such, when city water is used with domestic boilers, many kinds of heat exchangers, and the engines of vehicle and ships, there are often corrosion problems. In this study, alkali water was electrochemically made by electrolysis of city water, and corrosion properties between alkali and city water were investigated with an electrochemical method. Most of the chlorine ions are thought to not be contained in the alkali water because the alkali water is created in the cathodic chamber with an electrolysis process. In other words, the chlorine ion can be mostly removed by its migration from a cathodic chamber to an anodic chamber. Moreover, the alkali water also contains a large amount of hydroxide ion. The alkali water indicated relatively good corrosion resistance compared to the city water and the city water exhibited a local corrosion pattern due to the chlorine ion created by a high-degree purification treatment. In contrast, the alkali water showed a general corrosion pattern. Consequently, alkali water can be used with cooling water to inhibit local corrosion by chlorine ions in domestic boilers, various heat exchangers and the engine of ships and for structural steel in a marine structure.
The influence of chlorine on marine bacterial communities was examined in this study. A non-chlorine-adapted marine bacterial community (NCAM) and a chlorine-adapted bacterial community (CAM, bacterial community treated with $0.2mg-Cl_2/L$ chlorine) were cultivated for 1 month. A distinct difference was observed between the NCAM and CAM, which shared only eight operational taxonomic units (OTUs), corresponding to 13.1% of the total number of identified OTUs. This result suggested that chlorine was responsible for the changes in the marine bacterial communities. Kordiimonas aquimaris was found to be a chlorine-resistant marine bacterium. The effect of intermittent chlorination on the two marine biofilm communities formed on the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane surface was investigated using various chlorine concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mg $Cl_2/L$). Although the average number of adherent marine bacteria on the RO membrane over a period of 7 weeks decreased with increasing chlorine concentration, disinfection efficiencies showed substantial fluctuations throughout the experiment. This is due to chlorine depletion that occurs during intermittent chlorination. These results suggest that intermittent chlorination is not an effective disinfection strategy to control biofilm formation.

Currently, most of the chlorine dioxide gas is processed at the beginning of storage or distribution. It has the disadvantage of not being able to continuously process gas since there is no system that can continuously process it during the distribution process. Therefore, in order to minimize changes in freshness and quality during the distribution process of agrifood, there is a need for a sustained-release chlorine dioxide gas treatment technology that can be continuously released. Therefore, in this study, the film to be used was examined so that the chlorine dioxide gas can be continuously released for a certain period of time, the concentration of the reactant and the viscosity at the time of the reaction were determined, and a chlorine dioxide gas gel pack was manufactured using this optimal condition. In addition, the gel pack was used to measure the amount of chlorine dioxide gas released and the sterilization effect of food poisoning bacteria.
The disinfection of public water supplies has been used to prevent the transmission of waterborne diseases throughout the worlds. Although chlorine has been used as the primary disinfactant, its safety was first questioned in 1974 when chlorination of drinking water was found to result in the formation of trihalomethanes(THMs). Chlorine dioxide was selected as one alternative disinfactant. But the application of chlorine dioxide in water treatment has been limited because of concerns about the health effects of DBPs. In these experiments, chlorine dioxide showed the effective inactivation on both total coliforms and HPC at 3.0 mg $ClO_2/L$. The bactericidal effects of chlorine dioxide showed a tendency to increase as pH decreased, but the differences were not so sizable.
Combined treatment with gaseous and aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) was performed to improve the microbiological safety and quality of paprika. A single treatment of 50 ppmv $ClO_2$ gas for 30 min decreased the populations of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium by 2.33 and 2.91 log CFU/g, respectively. In addition, a single treatment of aqueous $ClO_2$ (50 ppm) for 5 min decreased these populations by 1.86 and 1.37, respectively. The most dramatic effects were achieved by combined treatment of 50 ppm aqueous and gaseous $ClO_2$ for 30 min, which decreased populations of E. coli O157:H7 and S. Typhimurium by 4.11 and 3.61 log CFU/g, respectively. With regard to the qualities of paprika, no adverse effects were elicited by the combined treatment. Thus, combined treatment with aqueous and gaseous $ClO_2$ is a suitable approach that can be used to improve the microbial safety and quality of paprika.
