The interaction between UN and CdCl2 in the LiCl-KCl molten eutectic was studied at 1023 K. The chlorination was monitored by sampling and recording the redox potential of the medium. At 1023 K the chlorination of UN with cadmium chloride in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic proceeds completely and results in the formation of uranium chlorides. The melts of the LiCl-KCl-UCl3 or LiCl-KCl-UCl4 compositions can be obtained by the end of experiment depending on the presence of metallic cadmium in the reaction zone. The higher the concentration of the chlorinating agent, the faster the reaction rate. At [CdCl2]/[UN] = 1.65 (10% excess) the reaction proceeds to completion in about 7.5 h. At [CdCl2]/[UN] = 7 the complete chlorination takes 2.5-3 h.

In the sewage structures and wastewater facilities, concrete is exposed to hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) which acts as an acid material in a solution, and a strongly acidic sulfate ion ($SO{_4}^{-2}$) is generated by a sulfuric bacteria. Hence, a degradation of concrete with biochemical corrosion would be accelerated. Finally, durability of concrete and concrete structures may be greatly reduced. In this study, in order to remove the hydrogen sulfide which is used by the sulfuric bacteria organic-biologically, the antibiotic metal and metallic salt powders were mixed to concrete, and a suppressing performance of the sulfate ion was assessed. For the sulfuric acid bacteria, a comparative evaluation of antimicrobial performance on neutralized concrete specimens were carried out, also by a rapid chloride penetration test, chloride penetration depths and diffusion coefficients were measured for antibiotic concrete in accordance with the amount of metal and metallic salt-based antibacterial agents. Eventually, by an observation of the biochemical state of the surface of concrete specimens exposed outdoors, the performance and applicability of antibiotic concrete were confirmed.
Deicer operations provide traffic safety during winter driving conditions in urban areas. Using large quantities of de-icing chemicals (i.e., $CaCl_2$ and NaCl) can cause serious environmental problems and may change behaviors of heavy metals in roadside sediments, resulting in an increase in mobilization of heavy metals due to complexation of heavy metals with chloride ions. To examine effect of de-icing salt concentration on the leaching behaviors and mobility of heavy metals (cadmium, zinc, copper, lead, arsenic, nickel, chromium, cobalt, manganese, and iron), leaching experiments were conducted on roadside sediments collected from Seoul city using de-icing salt solutions having various concentrations (0.01-5.0M). Results indicate that zinc, copper, and manganese in roadside sediments were easily mobilized, whereas chromium and cobalt remain strongly fixed. The zinc, copper and manganese concentrations measured in the leaching experiments were relatively high. De-icing salts can cause a decrease in partitioning between adsorbed (or precipitated) and dissolved metals, resulting in an increase in concentrations of dissolved metals in salt laden snowmelt. As a result, run-off water quality can be degraded. The de-icing salt applied on the road surface also lead to infiltration and contamination of heavy metal to groundwater.
Background and objective: Calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are commonly used as a deicing agent in South Korea and penetrate the soil on the roadside, causing damage to plants. This study was conducted to investigate the salinity reduction effect of Pennisetum alopecuroides and the chemical characteristics of soil leachate. Methods: The plants were treated with five different concentrations of CaCl2 (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10g·L-1) and were grouped into the Cont., C1, C2, C5, and C10 groups. CaCl2 of 200 m·L-1 was sprayed to each plant once every two weeks. The growth of P. alopecuroides (plant height, leaf length, leaf width and the number of leaves) was measured. The level of EC and pH, and exchangeable cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) in the leachate of soil was monitored. Results: The pH of soil leachate decreased as the CaCl2 concentration increased, and the EC increased significantly. The content of K+ did not change significantly until the concentration of CaCl2 reached 5 g·L-1, but the content of Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+ significantly increased. The plant height, leaf length, and leaf width of P. alopecuroides showed the highest value in CaCl2 1 g·L-1 followed by CaCl2 2 g·L-1 and the control group. Root fresh weight was the highest in CaCl2 2 g·L-1. On the other hand, there was no change in the shoot fresh weight, dry weight and root dry weight, and P. alopecuroides growth inhibition at the concentration of 5 g·L-1 or higher in the plant height and leaf length. Conclusion: P. alopecuroides is relatively highly salt-tolerant and can improve the salt damaged soil by lowering the content of the salt-based exchangeable K+ ions.
This study was carried out to investigate changes in physicochemical and sensory properties of cooked sausages replaced sodium chloride (NaCl) to potassium chloride (KCl) or magnesium chloride ($MgCl_2$) during storage for 30 days under $4^{\circ}C$. All sausages were prepared with different combination of salts as follow; CTL (1.5% NaCl), KCL (0.9% NaCl+0.6% KCl), MCL (0.9% NaCl+0.6% $MgCl_2$), KML (0.9% NaCl+0.3% KCl+0.3% $MgCl_2$) and PST (1.5% PanSalt). Among sausages moisture content in KML was the highest (p<0.05). Lightness and redness in CTL were lower than those of other treatments, but MCL and KML containing $MgCl_2$ showed higher CIE $L^*$ and $a^*$ values than CTL. The pH in CTL was the highest during storage, however, no significant difference was determined between two treatments, MCL and KML (p>0.05). Crude fat content and water holding capacity (WHC), hardness and cohesiveness of MCL sausages were higher than those of CTL. In sensory characteristics of cooked sausages, saltness in MCL was the lowest during 10 and 20 days of storage (p<0.05). Yellowness in PST was lower than other treatmeants. Gumminess and chewiness of texture property of sausages from MCL and KML were higher than CTL. The results indicate that the replacement of NaCl by KCl improved texture, but meat color was not improved as expected. In contrast, the replacement of NaCl by $MgCl_2$ enhanced color, texture and WHC, whereas partial replacement of NaCl by $MgCl_2$ must reduce bitter taste as compared to sausages manufactured with a NaCl only. Therefore, $MgCl_2$ may be a salt replacing NaCl in cooked pork sausages.

Use of de-icing salts results in accumulation of high concentrations of ions on roadside soils and tree. The purpose of this study isto determine translocation of seasonal impact of exchangeable cations originating from de-icing salt on roadside surface soil-plant influenced by the intensity of foliar damage (NY = 0-25%, SY = 26-50%, CY = 51-75%) of trees. This paper investigated the concentration of four exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$) on the roadside surface soil. The tree (Ginko biloba) samples were collected from the Konkuk and Judeok intersections in Chung-ju city. The sequential extraction procedure was applied to 120 soil samples of the soilsurface and 30 tree samples. Four cation exchange ions were determined by ICP-OES. The content of four exchangeable cations present on roadside soil was found to be the lowest in NY but highest in CY from tree pits in the order of NY < SY < CY. Especially, the results were apparent during spring time compared to other seasons. Soil collected from tree pits had the highest concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ possibly due to a higher volume of traffic on those streetsresulting in splashing of more calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$). The analysis of three exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Na^+$) in the tree leaves revealed higher levels than roadside surface soil when foliar damage ratio increased in the order of NY < SY < CY in summer. In addition, a strong positive linear relationship was observed between the concentration of exchangeable cations in soil and trees. It is hypothesized that the results of this study can be a valuable baseline for managing de-icing salt on roadside soil and trees, in order to mitigate the salt stress that can damage the roadside soil and trees.
Photosensitive compound, 1-methyl-4-[2-(4-diethylacetylphenyl)ethenyl] pridinium methosulfate(SbQ-A salt), was synthesized from dimethyl sulfate, terephthalaldehyde mono-(diethylacetal) and 4-picoline. SbQ-A salts were reacted with poly(vinyl alcohol)s, (PVA) in aqueous solution with phosphoric acid as catalyst to give photosensitive PVA-SbQ with different SbQ content and molecular weight. Relative photosensitivity of PVA-SbQ was determined by gray scale(GS) method. The rotative sensitivity of PVA-SbQ increased with increasing amount of bound SbQ in the case of high molecular weight(MW=77,000-79,000g/mol) as substrate and decreased with decreasing molecular weight of PVA with about constant(1.3mol%) amount of bound SbQ. The most sensitive polymer was obtained when SbQ group content in PVA-SbQ reached about 2.63mol% in the case of high molecular weight(77,000-79,000g/mol) PVA. This sample showed 90 times greater sensitivity than dichromated PVA as reference photosensitive system. PVA-SbQ photosensitive polymer synthesized was applied to the photolithographic screening process of phosphor on the panel of cathode ray tube(CRT). Phosphor slurry was made with PVA-SbQ, phosphor, a small amount of surfactant and other additives using water as medium. The slurry was coated onto panel, dried by heater, exposed to UV light and then developed by distilled water. When a small amount of cationic surfactant such as cetyltrimethylammonium chloride was used in the slurry formulation, the sharpness of phosphor pattern was equal to or better than that of dichromated PVA photosensitive polymer system used currently.
To investigate the effect of calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$) using for deicing salts in winter on gas exchange and stomatal responses of 3-year-old Prunus serrulata, we treated twice (1 L) $CaCl_2$ solution (0.5%, 1.0% and 3.0%) in the root zone before leaf unfolding. Stomatal conductance ($g_s$), photosynthetic rate ($P_n$), transpiration rate ($T_r$) and water use efficiency (WUE) in the leaves of P. serrulata were decreased with increasing of $CaCl_2$ concentration. Even though stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate were reduced by $CaCl_2$, intercellular $CO_2$ concentration ($C_i$) in $CaCl_2$ treatments has similar or higher values compared with control. These results suggest that non-stomatal limitation as well as stomatal limitation induced the reduction of photosynthetic rate together. On the other hands, treatment of $CaCl_2$ before leaf unfolding also affected leaf morphology traits. We proposed that reductions of stomatal length and leaf size and high pore density with increasing salinity is adaptative mechanism to reduce the water loss in plant.
This study observed particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$) in the downtown area of Jeju City, South Korea, to understand the chemical composition of particulates based on an analysis of the water-soluble ionic species contained in the particles. The mass fraction of the ionic species in the sampled $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ was 44.3% and 42.2%, respectively. In contrast, in Daegu City and Suwon City, the mass fraction of the ionic species in $PM_{2.5}$ was higher than that in $PM_{10}$. The chloride depletion percentage of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in Jeju City was higher than 61% and 66%, respectively. The contribution of sea-salt to the mass of $PM_{10}$ (5.9%) and $PM_{2.5}$ (2.6%) in Jeju City was similar to that in several coastal regions of South Korea. The mass ratio of $Cl^-$ to $Na^+$ in the downtown area of Jeju City was comparable to that in some coastal regions, such as the Gosan Area of Jeju Island, Deokjeok Island, and Taean City. The mass fraction of sea-salt in $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ was very low, and the concentration of sodium and chloride ions in $PM_{10}$ was not correlated with those in $PM_{2.5}$ ($R^2$ < 0.2), suggesting that the effects of sea-salt on the formation of particulate matter in Jeju City might be insignificant. The relationship between $NH_4{^+}$ and several anions such as $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $Cl^-$, as well as the relationship between the measurement and calculation of ammonium ion concentration, suggested that sea-salts may not react with $H_2SO_4$, and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ may be a major secondary inorganic aerosol component of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ in Jeju City.
This study aims to identify the most tolerant species under salinity stress from amongst Asteraceae and Poaceae. The seeds of six species were exposed to different concentrations of $CaCl_2$ (0, 9, 18, 45, 90 mM) and NaCl (0, 17, 34, 85, 170 mM), and germination was measured once every two days. The results indicated that percent germination of the six species of Asteraceae and Poaceae seeds were affected differently by changes in salinity concentration. Seed germination was reduced as salinity levels increase, and longer mean germination times correlated to lower percent germination and earlier germination cessation. Both Asteraceae and Poaceae seeds had the highest germination rates at 18 mM $CaCl_2$ and 34 mM NaCl, and seed germination and growth were severely reduced at salinities greater than 90 mM $CaCl_2$ and 170 mM NaCl. In the seeds of Poaceae, salt resistance was strong in the order of Miscanthus sinensis Andersson, Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng., and Phragmites communis Trin. In the seeds of Asteraceae, salt resistance was strong in the order of Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum (Maxim.) Kitam, Aster yomena (Kitam.) Honda, and Dendranthema boreale (Makino) Ling ex Kitam.. Overall, the germination rate was higher in Asteraceae than in Poaceae. This study demonstrated that Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum (Maxim.) Kitam. is the most tolerant species and that a relationship exists between the salt tolerance of percent germination and the mean germination time in the leaves.
