  • This study investigates the fresh state characteristics, strength, chloride ion penetration resistance and freeze-thaw resistance of the suggested high strength-high durability cement concrete pavement. The required workability and air content could be achieved by using an appropriate admixtures. However its dosage should be carefully determined through field trial batches. Compressive strength increased with the increased cement content and, in particular, high cement volume concrete continuously developed strength up to 90 days. No clear relationship, however, existed between flexural strength and cement content. Chloride penetration resistance seemed as a function of curing age rather than the cement content. Freeze-thaw resistance test was conducted using two different coolants, tap water and 4% NaCl solution. When the tap water was used no severe damage was observed up to 300 cycles regardless the air content. Under 4% NaCl solution, specimens of 326kg/$m^3$ cement content showed severe damage with surface scaling. Based on the experimental investigations herein, it is highly recommended that the cement content be greater than 400kg/$m^3$ for strength-high durability cement concrete pavement structures.

  • Recently, the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has received great attention related with the deterioration of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the influences of carbonation to chloride attack in concrete structures. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced than the case of single chloride attack when the carbonation process is combined with the chloride attack. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts. Though the use of fly ash pronounces the chloride ion concentration in surface, amounts of chloride ion penetration into deep region decreases with the use of fly ash. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of both chlorides and carbonation but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

  • Effect of the polymer-binder ratio and slag content on the properties of combined wet/dry-cured polymer-modified mortars using granulated blast-furnace slag are examined. Results shows that the flexural and compressive strengths of polymer-modified mortar using the slag tend to increase with increasing slag content, and reaches a maximum at a slag content of 40 %, and is inclined to increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. Water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth tend to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and slag content. Accordingly, the incorporation of slag into polymer-modified mortars at a slag content of 40% is recommended for a combined wet/dry curing regardless of the types of polymer.

  • In this study, the chemical fluid considered is sodium chloride sloutions. The concentrations for the sodium chloride solutions are varied from 0 to 20%. A series of lab oratory triaxial tests are performed on the cylindrical specimens of sand bentonite mixture with different (5, 10, 15%) sodium chloride content solutions. Deformation(elastic modulus, E) and strength (cohesion, c', and angle of friction, f') parameters are obtained from the triaxial tests and they are expressed as functions of conf'ming pressure and sodium chloride solution concentrations. The stress-strain-strength behavior based on the above strength parameters is introduced to the finite element method with a residual flow procedure (RFP). By integrating a slope stability (limit equilibrium) procedure in the finite element method, factors of safety with time are computed.

  • Isothiazoline derivatives is widely used to food, medical drug and industrial goods, cosmetics etcs, and it makes to restrain and to sterilize a breeding of microbe as a preservative and a sterilizing agent. It differs with the raw material of paraoxybenzoic acid derivatives or imidazolydinyl urea to be in use at present, on the efficacy and effect, and has various characteristics. This synthesis makes 3,3'-dithiodipropionic chloride to add a thionyl chloride in 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid, and 3,3'-dithiodipropionic methyl amide makes to synthesize in a reflux reaction the mono methyl amine to 3,3'-dithiodipropionic chloride. And last synthesis becomes to make chlorination-cyclization molecule doing a reflux reaction in the temperature of $90{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ to mix excessively thionyl chloride and ethylene dichloride to 3,3'-dithiodipropionic methyl amide. The last synthesis material has got in the mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one, and it is so-called isothiazoline derivatives. The purification of isothiazoline derivatives makes to fuse in ethyl acetate, and makes to decolorize and to deodorize in recrystallization. This experiment has been in synthesis and purification of isothiazoline derivatives, and has tried to measure on the antisepsis and sterilization function of microbe according to pH or content change.

  • To investigate the effects of mercuric chloride ($HgCl_2$) on the differentiation in the cerebral neuron of chick embryo 7 days, the ultrastructural changes in nerve cells injected with a various doses of mercuric chloride were observed with transmission electron microscope. The enzyme activity of the some dehydrogenases, and adenosine triphophate (ATP) were also analyzed. The results obtained are as follows; The ultrastructural changes in 1.0mg-injected group, the nuclear envelope were irregular, and the RER, Golgi complexes and mitochondria were not well developed. In 2.0mg-injected group, the nuclear envelope were partly destroyed or detached, and mitochondria were decreased in number and their cristae were destroyed, too. The RER and Golgi complexes were less developed than those of the normal groups. In general, the activities of dehydrogenases were declined by increasing the dose of mercuric chloride. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity fatted to below 85% of the normal group in 1.0mg-injected group, and 69% in 2.0mg-injected group. Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activity was decreased greatly to 76% in 2.0mg-injected group. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity fatted to 85% in 1.0mg-injected group, and 74% in 2.0mg-injected group. ATP content in 1.0mg-injected group was almost near to the normal level, but it was increased significantly in 2.0mg-injected group.

  • Factors affecting corrosion of stainless steels such as pH, oxidation and redox potential (ORP), soil resistivity, water content of soil, chloride ion concentration, bacteria activity, and corrosion potential have been investigated using soil analysis, bacterial analysis, surfacial analysis, and analysis of corrosion potentials of several stainless steels buried in 8 sites of Seoul metropolitan for one year. Corrosion potential was affected by occurrance of corrosion as well as bacteria activity but the behavior of corrosion potential with time is different depending on occurrance of corrosion and bacteria activity. The main factor affecting corrosion of stainless steels in soil is level of chloride ion concentration which is also a main factor affecting corrosion of stainless steels in chloride containing drinkable water. Furthermore, guideline of stainless steels in drinkable water is concluded to be applicable to that in soil by the results from surfacial analysis.

  • A small-scale electro-dialysis system was constructed for domestic use. It is composed of six compartments in which five special polystyrene ionic membranes are housed. A series of experiments on the transport of sodium and chloride ions through polystyrene membranes was performed and the effects of electric current and voltage on the pH of water were investigated. This electrodialyser could reduce the NaCl content to an acceptable level (5307 mg/L) when water containing 9945 mg/L of sodium chloride is fed to the electrodialyser. The reduction was by the action of direct current 60 mA/100 mA when a 15 V / 20 V potential is maintained across the membrane. The results showed that the pH of the treated water attained a value in the range of 7-8, with the chloride concentration of 5307 mg/L when the voltage was in the range of 20 volts. This was achieved when two of the small-scale electro-dialysers were placed in series and the solutions from the respective compartments were mixed. This is considered useful because this complies to the requirement of drinking water standard both in terms of chloride and pH. Therefore, this type electrodialyserhas the potential for domestic uses in isolated houses where potable water supply is not available.

  • This paper mainly discusses the influence of the aggregate properties including grading, shape, content and distribution on the chloride diffusion coefficient, as well as the initiation time of steel corrosion from a probabilistic point of view. Towards this goal, a simulation method of random aggregate structure (RAS) based on elliptical particles and a procedure of finite element analysis (FEA) at meso-scale are firstly developed to perform the analysis. Next, the chloride diffusion coefficient ratio between concrete and cement paste $D_{app}/D_{cp}$ is chosen as the index to represent the effect of aggregates on the chloride diffusion process. Identification of the random distribution of this index demonstrates that it can be viewed as actually having a normal distribution. After that, the effect of aggregates on $D_{app}/D_{cp}$ is comprehensively studied, showing that the appropriate properties of aggregates should be decided by both of the average and the deviation of $D_{app}/D_{cp}$. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the application of this mesoscopic method in predicting the initiation time of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The mesoscopic probabilistic method developed in this paper can not only provide more reliable evidences on the proper grading and shape of aggregates, but also play an important role in the probability-based design method.

  • The objectives of this paper were to obtain the fundamental data to analyze the causes of deterioration of 39 freeway concrete viaducts in Seoul metropolitan area. To investigate the degree of concrete deterioration, carbonation depth, soluble chloride concentration in hardened concrete and half-cell potentials of reinforcement were measured. The number of structures which carbonation depth penetrates to reinforcement was 25% of total. The model of carbonation .ate was induced to 3.92 $\sqrt{t}$, which was 5% faster than 3.727 $\sqrt{t}$ assumed 60% water-cement ratio, R=1 in that of kishitani. After measuring chloride concentration in concrete, it was concluded that about 24% of all readings on samples from concrete exceed the critical content to minimize the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. About 31% of the freeway viaducts structures had a value lower than -350mV(vs. CSE), so it could conclude that the excessive chloride concentration was the major cause of reinforcement corrosion. Among the structures which measured half-cell potentials less than -350mV, about 50% exceeds the maximum acceptable limit of chloride concentration.
