A novel O-diethylaminoethyl chitosan (DEAE-chitosan) was synthesized via Schiff's reaction between chitosan and benzaldehyde. $C_2$ amino group was protected via Schiffs base reaction with benzaldehyde to form N-benzylidene chitosan. After reaction with diethylaminoethyl chloride, Schiffs base was removed by reacting O-diethylaminothyl-N-benzylidene chitosan and hydrochloric acid. Tensile strength of DEAE-chitosan was improved due to the incorporation of bulky side group in $C_6$ position of chitosan. DEAE-chitosan showed a pH-dependent swelling characteristics. Release rate of riboflavin was dependent on the water content of DEAE-chitosan that is a function of crosslinking degrees.
This study examined the adsorption of a synthetic cutting fluid and cutting fluid effluent on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan, Chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were prepared in form of beads and fibers. A series of batch experiments were carried out as a function of the initial concentration of cutting fluid, contact time and pH of the fluid. The contact angle study suggested that the SDS-modified chitosan was more hydrophobic than chitosan. The Zeta potential study showed that chitosan, SDS-modified chitosan and synthetic cutting fluid had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 7.8, 9 and 3.2, respectively. SDS-modified chitosan has a greater adsorption capacity than chitosan. The experimental results show that adsorption capacity of the cutting fluid on 1.0 g of SDS-modified chitosan at pH 3 and for a contact time of 120 min was approximately 2,500 g/kg. The adsorption capacity of chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan increased with decreasing pH. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) adsorption models were used to explain the adsorption isotherm. The Langmuir isotherm fitted well with the experimental data of chitosan while the BET isotherm fitted well with the SDS-modified chitosan data. Pseudo first- and second-order kinetic models and intraparticle diffusion model were used to examine the kinetic data. The experimental data was fitted well to a pseudo second-order kinetic model. The significant uptake of cutting fluid on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were demonstrated by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and heat of combustion.
In this study, hydrogels from mixtures of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan/poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) were prepared by ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, and the mechanical properties such as gelation, water absorptivity and gel strength were examined to evaluate the applicability of these for wound dressing. The PVA : chitosan and PVP : chitosan ratio were in the range of 97:3 ~ 90:10, and the solid concentration of PVA/chitosan and PVP/chitosan solution were 15 wt%. Gamma irradiation with doses of 25, 35, 50, 60 and 70 kGy, was exposed to mixtures of PVA/chitosan and PVP/chitosan to evaluate the effect of irradiation dose. Gel content and gel strength increased as chitosan concentrations in PVA/chitosan and PVP/chitosan decreased, and as irradiation dose increased. Swelling degree increased as chitosan concentrations in PVP/chitosan and PVA/chitosan increased, and as irradiation dose decreased.

The changes on shrinkage, dyeability, antimicrobial activities and other physical properties of wool fabrics by chitosan treatment were investigated. A acid dye, a basic dye and natural artemisia were used for dyeing of wool fabrics. For Antimicrobial test of wool fabrics, S.Aureus was used. As the results, The wool fabrics treated with chitosan showed a marked decrease in shrinkage. Dyeability increased slightly as concentration of chitosan treatment increased, Dyeability of acid dye was the highest than other dyes. On the other hand, the dyeability of basic dye on chitosan treated fabrics was lower than untreated fabrics. Reduction rates of colony of chitosan-treated wool fabrics showed from 64.8% to 85.24% as chitosan concentration increased. Reduction rates of colony of the chitosan-treated fabrics decreased by dyeing with acid and basic dye. But increased by retreating with chitosan. Fabrics dyeing with atremisia showed above 90% reduction rate against S.Aureus on all chitosan concentrations. The Tensile properties of chitosan-treated fabrics showed little decrease. The moisture regain and the air permeability was decreased on chitosan concentration on 0.1% but recovered as chitosan concentration increased. The warmth retention was increased a little by chitosan treatment. The drapeability became hard as chitosan concentration increased.
This strdy was performed to investigate the effect of chitin, chitosan and dithiocarbamate chitosan against cadmium accumulation. The Scapharca subcrenata were divided into four independent groups which were one control and three experimintal groups by camium alone treatmint or chitin, chitosan and dithsan and dithiocabamate chitosan which cadmium. Samples were analyzed by Varian 30/40 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results obtained were as follows;1. The cadmium concentration in water were isgnificantly decreased in three experimental group compared with that of control group (P<0.05)2. The cadmium concentration in muscle of S. srbcrenata in cadmium alone treatment group were similar to that of the chitin treatmint group, but chitosan and dithiocarbamate chitosan treatmint groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05)In conclusion, this study revealed the effect of chitin chitosan and dithiocarbamate chitosan against cadmium accumulation. It exhibited the highest effect at dithiocarbamate chitosan treatment group.
The antibacterial activity of chitosan against Escherichia coli was investigated in the presence of NaCl, sucrose, and ethanol to assess the potential use of chitosan as a biopreservative in food products containing these components. The inhibitory activity of chitosan decreased slightly upon the addition of NaCl and sucrose, respectively to culture broth containing 100 ppm of chitosan (Mw 3,000), while the addition of ethanol enhanced the inhibitory activity of chitosan on growing cells. The addition of these components to non-growing cells prior to chitosan treatment demonstrated that NaCl protected the cells from the inhibitory activity of chitosan, while sucrose had no effect. Ethanol addition to non-growing cells increased cell death by chitosan treatment. Finally, binding of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled chitosan to E. coli was measured in the presence of the food components. The FITC-labeled chitosan binding to cells decreased upon NaCl addition, was not affected by sucrose, and increased following treatment with ethanol.
Chitosan has been known as a wound healing agent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility and guided bone regenerative effect of chitosan and chitosan-cellulose membranes. The effects of chitosan and chitosan-cellulose membranes on the growth and survival of human periodontal ligament cells were examined by rapid colorimetric MTT(tetrazolium) assay, and the tissue response and resorption pattern were observed by implanting the membranes into the subcutaneous tissue of the back of rats for 6 weeks. To evaluate the guided bone regenerative potential of membranes, the amount of newly formed bone in the rat calvarial defects(8mm in diameter) was measured by histomorphometry and radiomorphometry 1,2 and 4 weeks after implantation of membranes. Chitosan and chitosan-cellulose membranes showed no adverse effect on the growth and survival of human periodontal ligament cells. When membranes were subcutaneously implanted, inflammatory reaction was observed at 1 week and which gradually subsided 2weeks after implantation. Membranes remained intact throughout the experimental period of 6 weeks. Radiomorphometric analysis of the craniotomy sites revealed that chitosan and chitosan-cellulose membrane implanted sites showed increased radiopacity over control. Statistically significant differences with control were found in chitosan-cellulose membrane implanted group at 2 and 4 weeks, and chitosan membrane implanted group at 4 weeks(P<0.05). Histomorphometric data indicated a pattern of osseous healing similar to radiomorphometric analysis. There was a statistically significant difference between control and chitosan-cellulose membrane implanted group at 4 weeks(P<0.05). These results implicate that chitosan and chitosan-cellulose membrane might be useful for guided bone regeneration.

Blend films of poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) with chitosan were prepared, and their Physical properties and crystallization were investigated. The degree of crystallinity of PHB/chitosan films by X-ray diffraction decreased with increasing chitosan concentration. In the fourier-transformed infrared spectra, carbonyl peak of PHB became lower with increasing the amount of chitosan. The addition of chitosan to PHB film decreased thermal stability and crystallinity of the blend films. The granular sizes of the films were reduced with the addition of chitosan to the film in the microstructural observation by a scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties, including tensile strength and percent elongation, of the blend films increased with increasing chitosan ratio in the films. For color of the films, L and b values generally decreased with increasing chitosan ratio, but transparency of the films increased.

Chitin was isolated from red snow crab (Chinonecetes japonicus) and deacetylated by boiling alkaline solution to produce chitosan. The physical properties of chitosan solution and its film properties was examined, As the molecular weights of chitosan was increased from 297Kpa to 319Kpa, the tensile strength, degree of elongation and water permeability of chitosan film were increased. As the degree of deacetylation of chitosan was increased, the tensile strength, the degree of elongation and water permeability of chitosan film were increased. As the concentration of chitosan solution was increased, the degree of elongation and water permeability of film were increased, whereas the tensile strength of film was decreased, As the pH of chitosan solution was increased, the tensile strength and water permeability of film were decreased, whereas the degree of elongation of film was increased.
This study was conducted to investigate the preservative effect of low molecular weight chitosans on kimchi(2% salt concentration) during fermentation at $20^{\circ}C$. The pH and total acidity of control kimchi were lower and higher, respectively than those of kimchi samples containing chitosan. Reducing sugar content tended to be lower in control kimchi than in kimchi samples containing chitosan until 6 days of fermentation. Malic acid content was lower in control kimchi than in kimchi samples containing chitosan until 4 days of fermentation. Succinic acid content was higher in control kimchi than in kimchi samples containing chitosan at the 2 days of fermentation. Content of lactic and acetic acid also was higher in control kimchi than in kimchi samples containing chitosan at the 4 days of fermentation. The number of total microorganisms and those of microorganisms of Leuconostoc genus and Lactobacillus plantarum were higher in control kimchi than in kimchi samples containing chitosan. The number of microorganisms of Leuconostoc genus was lower in kimchi samples containing chitosan with the lower molecular weight chitosan than those with the higher molecular weight chitosan. Intensity of sensory sour taste and staled flavor were higher in control kimchi than in kimchi samples containing chitosan. There was not much difference in sensory firmness among kimchi samples, but control kimchi was evaluated slightly weaker than kimchi samples containing chitosan. Off-flavor was evaluated as weak in all the kimchi samples.
