This study aims to lay the foundations for domestic welfare through solving domestic problems. The major results of this study were as follows: First, there are many domestic violence facilities, but their poor financial condition and lack of human resources make it difficult to meet all need of shelter users. Second, people who use domestic violence shelters can't receive proper care and they go back to their homes in which violence still remains. It is like a vicious cycle making their situation worse and worse. Third, counseling given to abused women in shelters is arranged individually or in groups, but there are not enough programs providing proper care for them. On the basis of the realities mentioned above, this study was intended to pave the way to work out the improvement programs as follows: First, it is critical that the financial support from the government should be increased. Second, it is necessary to improve the training of personnel concerned with the handling of domestic violence cases. Third, it is important to make sure that children of abused women should be taken care of safely, and temporary jobs for the women should be secured. This will allow domestic violence shelters to serve their true purpose. Lastly, more adequate counseling services such as more instrumental 1366 phone lines, the development of various programs and the follow-up counseling should be reinforced.

Objectives : This study aims to compare the mental health of adolescents living in child care institutions (orphanages) and youth shelters, to provide basic data for appropriate psychiatric interventions for each facilities. Methods : The sample consisted of 157 adolescents in child care institutions and 31 adolescents in Youth Shelters who completed the Korean version of the Youth Self Report (K-YSR). We compared the K-YSR scores between the two groups and also examined factors related to suicidality. Results : Adolescents in youth shelters were older and had higher rates of drinking (p<0.001), smoking (p<0.001), and "abnormal sleep" (p=0.007) than adolescents in child care institutions. They also showed higher 'suicidality' (p=0.004) and K-YSR scores. On the other hand, adolescents in child care institutions have lower 'suicidality', but they have higher 'suicidality' when they have 'abnormal sleep' (OR 4.194; p=0.006), 'abnormal diet' (OR 2.503; p=0.010), and 'concerns about weight gain' (OR 2.503; p=0.010). Additionally, 17.6% of participants in the study showed 'suicidality'. The 'suicidality' group had a higher overall K-YSR score than the non-suicidal group, and had higher 'abnormal sleep' (OR 3.766; p=0.014) and 'concern about weight gain' (OR 2.864; p=0.032). Conclusions : Adolescents in youth shelters appear to have more serious clinical difficulties than adolescents in child care institutions, so prompt psychiatric intervention is needed. Additionally, it is necessary to consider mental health assessments including suicidality when adolescents in child care institutions complain of sleep, eating, or weight gain problems.

And the ultimate purpose is to offer basic data for preventing adolescents‘ runaway and for diversifying runaway shelters suitable for the problem of individual adolescent. Method:128 adolescents who stay in the runaway shelters were asked to complete self-report qeustionnaires including basic sociodemographic data, Child Behavior Check List(CBCL), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI), and Symptom Check List-90-Revised(SCL-90-R). Korean Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale(K-WAIS)[or Korean Educational Developmental Institute-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children(KEDI-WISC)] and Bender-Gestalt test(BGT) were also done by clinical psychologists. Results:The most common age of the subjects were 15-year-old, and they dropped out their schools in the middle school most commonly. Mostly they were from middle class family and their parents' educational level were high school graduates. The first runaway episode was most common in the middleschool period, and their runaways were repeated. The most common frequency of runaways were more than 10 times. About 10% of them abused drugs and about 80% of them abused alcohol. One third of them had experiences of illegal problems and 10% of them engaged in sexual activity for money. 95 adolescents(83%) in CBCL, 42 adolescents(36%) in SCL-90-R, and 70 adolescents(69.3%) in MMPI showed clinical significance. In intelligence test, 22 adolescents(22%) were mentally retarded. In BGT, 35 adolescents(39.4%) manifested brain dysfunction signs. Conclusion:Runaway adolescents in the shelters have variable and severe psychopathology. Their psychopathology is classified as follows; The behavior disorder group, the mood disorder group with anxiety/depression, the somatic disorder group with somatic symptoms, and the psychosis group with possibility of severe psychopathology. Therefore it is very important to evaluate psychiatric problems of runaway adolescents, and specific therapeutic interventions according to their problems are required.

The theoretical framework of this program was based on Solution-Focused, Satir's Experiential, and Cognitive-Behavioral models. Need assessment analysis of youth shelter workers, focus group interviews with runaway youths, and advisory council meetings were used as a complementary resource for this study. Thirty-one runaway youths from 6 youth shelters in Seoul and Kyunggi participated in 4 two-hour sessions of this Family Relationship Enhancement Program. All participants were subjected to pre-test and post-test analysis in order to assess the efficacy of the program. Scales of behavioral problem syndrome showed relatively significant correlation with abuse history. In MMPI scale of psychopathic deviate scale was highest, social introversion showed significant correlation with emotional abuse, and psychopathic deviate and hypomania showed significant correlation with physical abuse, neglect and sexual abuse. In SCL-90-R somatization scale was highest. Scales of somatization, hostility, and paranoid ideation scale were significantly high in adolescents with emotional abuse and neglect history, and scores of anxiety and depression scale were significantly high in sexually abused adolescents. Conclusion : Runaway adolescents who had abuse experience showed significantly higher level of psychopathology than general adolescents and there were various interrelations between them according to the presence and the type of abuse. More precise psychiatric evaluation and detailed treatment intervention for runaway adolescents are needed.

The recent domestic violence research has emphasized an integrated approach to wife battering and child abuse to overcome separated understanding and problem-solving alternatives of the two phenomena in the past. This phenomenological study is designed to understand struggles and dilemmas of battered women and their children related to their surviving and coping with domestic violence in a mother-child relationship. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten battered women who have children and reside in shelters in Seoul and Anyang, and were analyzed by Atlas.ti(a qualitative software program) to maximize the efficiency of data analysis. Domestic violence can be transformed into and integrated with child abuse anytime, so battered women and their children share their crises and challenges related to motherliness and filial love. However, the mutual, existential meaning embedded in the mother-child relationship can be the most important sources to mobilize their life energy and resilience in their copping efforts. The social work interventions for battered women and their children should be integrated with a premise of deep understanding of the complex realities of domestic violence victims.
This study examined the effect of group counseling on the self-esteem, self-efficacy, and congruent communication style of female victims of family violence. A twice-weekly group counseling consisting of 10 sessions was provided to 5 women residing in shelters in Seoul, South Korea from October $19^{th}$ to November $20^{th}$ 2009. This study employed the self-esteem scale developed by Rosenberg(1965) and translated into Korean by Jeon Byoung Jae(1974), a self-efficacy measurement tool(Kim A Young,1997) and a congruency scale(Go Moon Jeong, 2008). The Wilcoxon non-parametric verification was used to identify the differences between before and after the group counseling sessions. The results revealed meaningful improvements in self-esteem, self-efficacy and congruent communication styles.
