This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of cherry tomatoes in greenhouse using far infrared heating system. The far infrared greenhouse heating systems were installed in two ways on the greenhouse side wall and at the greenhouse ceiling. The heating characteristics of far infrared heating system were analyzed by investigating the heating load, internal temperature, energy consumption, growth characteristics and quality evaluation. The results were compared with heated air heating system using kerosene. The results showed that tomatoes grown in the greenhouse with the far infrared heating system had relatively better plant height, leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter than ones from the greenhouse with hot air heating system and both heating methods had no significant difference on Cherry tomato sugar contents. At the same time, the far infrared heating system reduced heating cost from 34.5 to 41.4% on comparing with hot air heating system.

This study was conducted to determine the yield of cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill.) grown at three planting times during the uncultivated period of strawberry. Cherry tomato was planted under condition filled with strawberry dedicated culture medium on a two-story bed with April 20, April 30, and May 10 at 2015. Fruit harvest was completed on July 31. The supply concentration of nutrient solution at the time of transplanting was started as EC $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and it was gradually increased to EC $2.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ after blooming of the first flower cluster. Netherlands PBG solution was supplied for one minute six times per day. The heights of cherry tomato plants planted at earlier were significantly greater than those of tomato plants planted later. The heights of cherry tomato plants grown at the bottom of the bed were greater than those grown in the upper bed. The yield of cherry tomatoes planted on April 20 at the bottom of the bed was greatest with an average of 2,954 g of tomatoes per plant. There were no significant differences in the average weight and sugar content of fruit according to planting times and bed position. The yield of cherry tomato plants planted on April 20 was 18% and 34% higher than that of plants planted on April 30 and May 10. We confirmed to increase the yield of the cherry tomato when early plants planted on two-story bed. These results indicate that farmers can choose the best period of producing cherry tomato during the un-cultivated period of strawberry under two-story bed conditions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality changes and contamination of microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, mold and yeast in cherry tomatoes during storage at different temperatures, gas composition and periods(7 and 14 days). This study determined pH, color change and the growth pattern of microorganisms in cherry tomato during storage at $5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$. According to the results, pH level was a little raised with storage period. On average, $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ value of cherry tomato were irregular value of increase and decrease of all gas packaging with storage period. In regard of the types of microorganism, aerobic count plate, coliform count, mold and yeast were detected when cherry tomatoes were stored at $5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ during storage for 14 days. Equally, all microorganisms of cherry tomato were irregular with storage period and complex gas packaging. However, this study determined that packaging with a higher $CO_2$ concentration than $O_2$ concentration can reduce growth of microorganism. These studies can be used as primary data for determining the optimal complex gas to storage enlargement.
This study was conducted to determine the nutritional value of domestic cherry tomato varieties (Summerking, Qutiquti, and Minichal). The levels of amino acids, amino acid derivatives, and ${\gamma}-aminobutyric-acid$ (GABA) were analyzed using ion chromatography. In domestic cherry tomatoes, eighteen free amino acids were found including L-glutamic acid (L-Glu), L-glutamine (L-Gln), and L-aspartic acid (L-Asp). L-Glu was the most abundant amino acid, ranging from 1,533.17 mg/100 g to 1,920.65 mg/100 g (dry weight). The next abundant amino acids were L-Gln, ranging from 784.68 mg/100 g to 1,164.36 mg/100 g and L-Asp, ranging from 320.73 mg/100 g to 387.22 mg/100 g. Domestic cherry tomatoes contained eight essential amino acids except tryptophan and the total essential amino acid content was 297.30~432.43 mg/100 g (dry weight), which was 8.92~10.61% of total free amino acid. Several amino acid derivatives were found: L-carnitine (L-Car), hydroxylysine (Hyl), o-phosphoethanolamine (o-Pea), phosphoserine (p-Ser), ${\beta}-alanine$ (${\beta}-Ala$), N-methyl-histidine (Me-His), ethanolamine ($EtNH_2$), and L-citrulline (L-Cit). L-Car, transporting long-chain fatty acid into mitocondrial matrix, was the most abundant amino acid derivative in all domestic cherry tomatoes. A high level of GABA (313.18~638.57 mg/100 g), known as a neurotransmitter, was also found in all three domestic cherry tomatoes. These results revealed that domestic cherry tomatoes have a good balance of nutrient and bioactive compounds. Therefore, cherry tomatoes can be used as a functional food material.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of osmotic dehydration as pretreatment on the qualities of dried cherry-tomatoes. The weight reduction and solid gain in osmosed cherry-tomato were increased by increasing sugar concentration, immersion temperature and time; among three parameters, the immersion temperature affected more than sugar concentration and immersion time did. The moisture content was decreased as increasing sugar concentration, immersion temperature and time, and it was the lowest at the osmotic conditions of 7$0^{\circ}C$, 60$^{\circ}$Brix and 11hr. To determine the optimum processing condition by RSm, the polynomial optimum models were established. The regression models was significant (p<0.05). It was used contour plots to optimize osmotic dehydration. The optimum condition for osmotic dehydration as pretreatments for drying of cherry-tomatoes were immersion temperature of 47~53$^{\circ}C$, sugar concentration of 39~43$^{\circ}$Brix, and immersion time of 7hr, in which process conditions were 78~86% moisture content, 8.5~10$^{\circ}$Brix sugar content and 80~86% weight reduction.

'Unicon' cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most highly perishable horticultural crops due to its high water content and respiration rate. This study was carried out to assess the effect of continuous application of $CO_2$ (control [air], 3%, and 5%) on the quality and shelf life of cherry tomato fruits stored at $10^{\circ}C$ and $85{\pm}5%$ relative humidity (RH) at two maturity stages (pink and red). Continuous application of $CO_2$ did not affect the soluble solids content (SSC) or titratable acidity (TA) of the fruit at either maturity stage during storage. However, there was a significant difference among treatments in terms of flesh firmness, cell wall thickness, pectin content, vitamin C content, skin color, lycopene content, weight loss, ethylene production rate, respiration rate, and acetaldehyde and ethanol production. Fruits treated with 5% $CO_2$ maintained their high quality with regards to vitamin C, skin color ($a^*$), lycopene content, weight loss, physiological parameters (ethylene production rate, respiration rate, and volatile compounds), flesh firmness, cell wall thickness, and pectin content at both maturity stages compared with 3% $CO_2$ treatment and the control. Continuous application of $CO_2$ (5%) reduced the ethylene production rate and the production of volatile compounds during storage. Therefore, cherry tomato 'Unicon' fruit can be stored for two weeks without losing fruit quality at both maturity stages under continuous application of 5% $CO_2$ as a postharvest treatment.
A soft rot of fruits caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred on cherry tomato in Jinju City Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, Korea. The disease infection usually started from wounding after cracking of fruits. At first, the lesions started with water soaked and were rapidly softened and diseased lesion gradually expanded. The mycelia grew vigorously on the surface of fruits and formed stolons. Colonies on potato dextrose agar at $25^{\circ}C$ were white cottony at first, becoming heavily speckled by the presence of sporangia and the browinish black, and spreading rapidly by means of stolons fired at various points to the substrate by rhizoids. Sporangia were $82.7{\times}196.7{\mu}m$ in size and globose or sub-globose with somewhat flattened base. The color of sporangia was white at first and then turned black with many spores, and never overhanging. Sporangiophores were $2.6{\sim}5.8{\times}12.3{\sim}24.2{\mu}m$ in width, smooth-walled, non-septate, tight brown, simple, long, arising in groups of $3{\sim}5$ from stolons opposite rhizoids. Sporangiospores were $8.2{\sim}18.8{\mu}m$ long, irregular, round, oval, elongate, angular, and browinish-black streaked. Columella was $64.1{\times}136.3{\mu}m$. brownish gray, and umberella-shaped when dehisced. The causal organism was identified to be R. stolonifer. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot on cherry tomato caused by R. stolonifer in Korea.
BACKGROUND: Selection an suitable light source is essential in the year-round production of horticultural crops in closed production systems such as plant factory with controlled environments. This study was investigated to confirm the effects of artificial light sources on growth of cherry tomato'CF Jelly'(Lycopersicon esculentum var.) under high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS), metal-halide lamps (MH), and LEDs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Light intensity of the light sources was controlled at 220±30 µmol/m2/s with 12 hrs of photoperiod for a day. Flower development was significantly faster in HPS and MH treatments compared to the LEDs. There was no significant difference between the leaf number and leaf shape under the HPS and MH treatments. Reproductive growth of cherry tomato was significantly promoted by the LEDs treatment of blue plus red lights. Fruit yield per plant also increased under the LEDs compared to the others. CONCLUSION(S): Growth, flowering, and fruit setting of the cherry tomato were accomplished by the artificial lights under plant factory conditions. The HPS treatment showed negative effect on fruit quality in terms of blossom-end rot incidence compared to the LEDs or MH treatment. Effect of the LEDs on promotion of fruit weight and yield was also proved. Additional research should be carried out for improving sugar metabolism or decreasing disease in the fruits under plant factory system using only artificial lights.
This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomatoes as a functional food and food material by measuring the total polyphenol and flavonoid content, anti-oxidative and anticancer activity. The contents of polyphenol and flavonoid were $12.28{\pm}1.78mg$ and $3.89{\pm}0.54mg$ per one g of dried cherry tomatoes respectively. The anti-oxidative activity of the cherry tomato was verified by measuring ${\alpha}$-${\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (DSA), 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity (ASA) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). 50% of radical scavenging concentrations ($IC_{50}$) of DSA and ASA were $328.64{\pm}4.190{\mu}g/mL$ and $350.61{\pm}3.300{\mu}g/mL$ respectively. FRAP value was $26.92{\pm}0.68{\mu}mol$$Fe^{2+}/g$. The effects of the cherry tomato extract on the growth of a normal lung cell (Hel299), lung cancer cell (A549), cervical cancer cell (HeLa) and a liver cancer cell (HepG2) were investigated using MTT assay. The cherry tomato extract showed a significantly strong growth inhibition effects against A549 cell and $IC_{50}$ was $375.46{\pm}33.670{\mu}g/mL$. The extract also inhibited growths of HeLa and HepG2 cells weakly. In this study we found that Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomato had anti-oxidative activity and strong inhibition effect against lung cancer cells. These results indicate that the Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomato would be a functional food and food material.
Biochar is a solid carbon material made by pyrolyzing a biomass under limited oxygen conditions. Biochar has been reported to confer various benefits, such as increased soil productivity, pollutant absorption, and reduced greenhouse gas. In this study, oak pyrolyzed at 600℃ for 3 hours was either powdered or pelleted. Each of the biochar types was added to the soil at a rate of 2%. The control did not receive any biochar while a combination of the biochar and NPK treatment (biochar 2% + NPK) was also included. The cherry tomatoes were grown in greenhouse pots for 50 days to compare the growth characteristics of the different treatments. The cherry tomato with the powdered biochar 2% + NPK treatment had the heaviest plant fresh shoot weight of 276.4 g and the highest chlorophyll content of 59.3 SPAD. The control had the lightest plant fresh shoot weight of 44.2 g and a chlorophyll content of 26.5 SPAD. Both forms of biochar affected the chemical properties of the soil, increased the pH, electrical conductivity, available phosphate, total carbon and total nitrogen and positively influenced the cherry tomato growth and productivity. From the above results, therefore, both biochar forms are suited for use as soil amendments.
