Laboratory Project at Asian Institute of Technology Proves Valuable in Developing Specialty Chemical Applications for Asian Pulp Mills

  • The application of specialty chemicals in a pulp mill system for the purpose of problem solving or process enhancement is often demonstrated and supported by data produced in laboratory testing. Hercules Chemical Solutions Pte Ltd., a major specialty chemical supplier to the Asian pulp and paper industry, partnered with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on several occasions to provide insight into the efficacy of proposed chemical treatments designed for local operating conditions and wood species. This paper presents an example of a chemically-assisted deresination project. The resulting surfactant chemistry proved to be a superior deresinator for plantation grown acacia wood and has been successfully implemented in an Asian pulp and paper mill.

  • 자동차용 냉각기 호스는 열과 기계적 하중 하에서 공기와 부동액의 접촉 스트레스로 인해 노화와 고장이 일어날 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 냉각기 호스재료인 EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer)고무에 대해 열가속 및 산소 스트레스, 전기화학적 스트레스에 의한 표피층의 노화거동을 비파괴 평가하였다. 열가속 및 산소노화 시험결과 신장률의 저하와 함께 IRHD(International Rubber Hardness Degrees)경도가 증가하였다. 전기화학적 노화(electro-chemical degradation: ECD) 시험에서는 에틸렌글리콜 수용액의 침투로 인해 무게가 증가하였으며 신장률과 경도는 크게 저하되었다 또한 에틸렌글리콜 수용액이 표피층뿐만이 아니라 내부에까지 침투하여 고무내부구조와 미크로경도분포가 깊이에 따라 변화되었다. 즉, 열가속 및 산소노화와 ECD 노화는 미크로 경도와 화학구조분석에 의해 비파괴적 특성 평가가 가능함을 보였다.

Effect of additional heat-treatment temperature on chemical, microstructural, mechanical, and electrical properties of commercial PAN-based carbon fibers

  • In this present work, the effect of additional heat-treatment (AHT) in the range from $1800^{\circ}C$ to $2400^{\circ}C$ on the chemical composition, morphology, microstructure, tensile properties, electrical resistivity, and thermal stability of commercial polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers was explored by means of elemental analysis, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, single fiber tensile testing, two-probe electrical resistivity testing, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The characterization results were in agreement with each other. The results clearly demonstrated that AHTs up to $2400^{\circ}C$ played a significant role in further contributing not only to the enhancement of carbon content, fiber morphology, and tensile modulus, but also to the reduction of fiber diameter, inter-graphene layer distance, and electrical resistivity of "as-received" carbon fibers without AHT. The present study suggests that key properties of commercial PAN-based carbon fibers of an intermediate grade can be further improved by proprietarily adding heat-treatment without applying tension in a batch process.

Safety of a Traditional Korean Medicine, Cheonggan extracts (CGX): A 2-week Single-dose Toxicity Study in SD Rats and Beagle Dogs

  • Objectives: To evaluate the acute toxic effects and approximate lethal dose of Cheonggan extracts (CGX) in SD rats and beagle dogs. Methods: Male and female rats were divided into 4 groups (Control, CGX 1250, CGX 2500, CGX 5000) respectively and male and female dogs were divided into two groups respectively (Control, CGX 5000) respectively. A single oral dose of CGX was treated to the rats and dogs. Mortality, signs of gross toxicity, and behavioral changes were observed over 14 days. All animals were observed every hour for 4 hours after administration and once a day thereafter for 14 days. Body weights were determined at $0_{th}$, $7_{th}$, and $14_{th}$ days. All surviving animals were sacrificed and necrotized. Major organs were inspected visually for gross findings. Results: No animals died in any of the groups during the experimental period (2 weeks), rats or dogs. Body weights of rats and dogs during the experiment continuously increased in all groups but there was no significant change. No abnormal clinical signs were observed for 2 weeks after a single administration of CGX in any dose group of CGX, rats or dogs. No abnormal findings in major organs were observed in any group of rats or dogs. Conclusion: CGX does not have acute toxic effects in rats or dogs. Therefore, an approximate lethal dose is assumed to exceed 5000 mg/kg in both rats and dogs.

가정용 섬유제품 중 기타 제품류의 폼알데하이드 위해성평가 연구 (Formaldehyde Risk Assessment in Other Household Textile Products)

  • Background: Appropriateness issues have emerged regarding the non-application of hazardous substance safety standards for items classified as 'other textile products'. Objectives: Testing for formaldehyde (HCHO) and risk assessment were conducted on 'other textiles products' to provide reference data for promoting product safety policies. Methods: Testing was conducted on five items (102 products) classified as 'other textile products' according to relevant standards (textile products safety standards), and the risk of each product was assessed using the evaluation methodologies of the European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals (ECETOC) and European Chemical Agency (ECHA). Results: Out of the 102 products tested, HCHO was detected above the quantification limit in five. Based on these results, the screening risk assessment indicated that three products exceeded the criteria. Upon reassessing the emission and transfer rates of products exceeding the criteria, it was confirmed that there were no instances of exceeding the criteria. Conclusions: Risk assessment results can be used as supporting data for non-application of hazardous substance standards. However, it is deemed necessary to transition towards a management approach based on risks in order to addressing emerging trends such as convergence/new products.

  • 현재 널리 사용되고 있는 비파괴검사중의 하나인 초음파탐상검사(ultrasonic testing)는 교량, 발전소, 석유화학프랜트 및 중공업분야 등에 사용되는 각종 구조물의 사용전 중검사에 폭넓게 응용되고 있으며, 구조물의 안전관리와 품질관리에 필수적으로 요구되고 있다. 또한, 이들 구조물에 존재하는 결함에 대한 정량적 평가 및 검사 데이타의 해석에 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 기존의 초음파탐상검사에 사용되는 휴대용 초음파탐상기의 단점을 보안하기 위해 컴퓨터 내장형 초음파탐상기가 선진국에서 개발되고 있으며 다양한 소프트웨어의 사용에 따른 검사 신뢰도가 향상되고 있다. 본 연구는 컴퓨터 내장형 초음파탐상기를 구성하고, 이를 콘트롤할 수 있는 프로그램, 검사 결과의 저장 및 신호 처리 해석이 가능한 소프트웨어를 개발하였다.

개방적 가설검증 학습모형을 적용한 과학 탐구학습의 효과:화학 I ‘금속과 그 이용’ 단원을 중심으로 (The Effects of Science Inquiry Learning Applying Open- Ended Hypothesis-Testing Learning Model: On the ‘Metals and Their Applications’ Unit in Chemistry)

  • 연구에서는 고등학교 화학 수업에서 개방적 가설검증 학습모형을 적용한 과학 탐구학습을 실시하고, 학생들의 인지 수준에 따른 과학 탐구능력, 과학 수업에 대한 태도에 미치는 효과와 수업에 대한 인식을 알아보았다. 서울에 소재한 남자 고등학교 2학년 4개 학급의 학생들(92명)을 대상으로 개방적 가설검증 학습모형을 적용한 과학 탐구학습을 실시한 처치집단과 실험과정이 모두 제시된 실험 수업을 실시한 통제집단으로 배치한 후, 화학의 ‘금속과 그 이용' 단원에 대해서 수업을 실시하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면, 개방적 가설검증 학습모형을 적용한 과학 탐구학습은 과학 탐구능력 향상에 관해서 실험설계, 자료 변환 및 해석, 가설검증의 영역에서 유의미한 효과가 있었으며 문제 파악 및 정의, 가설설정의 영역에서는 효과가 없었다. 한편, 개방적 과학 탐구학습에서 학생들의 역할 및 수행할 과제의 증가로 인해 과학 수업에 대한 태도는 처치집단에 부정적인 효과가 나타났다.

환경오염공정시험기준과 KS ISO규격의 일원화에 관한 연구 - 먹는 물 및 실내공기질 - (Study on the unification between KS I ISO standard and official test method enacted by Korean Ministry of Environment - drinking water and indoor air quality -)

  • 현행 환경오염공정시험기준 중 먹는 물 수질공정시험기준과 실내공기질 공정시험기준에 대해 국제규격에 부합화된 KS ISO규격과의 일원화에 관해 연구하였다. KS규격 23,000여종을 대상으로 먹는 물 및 실내공기질관련 KS 규격을 조사하였다. 환경분야관련 KS규격은 KS I로 분류되며, 총 653종으로 조사되었으며, 이중 국제규격에 부합화된 KS I 규격은 583종으로 조사되었다. 먹는 물 수질공정 시험기준은 총 100개 기준을 대상으로 ISO/TC 147 "Water Quality" 관련 KS 규격 총 232종을 비교 검토하였으며, 실내공기질 공정시험기준은 "ISO/TC 146 "Air Quality" 관련 KS 규격 총 95종 규격을 비교 검토하였다. 문헌검토와 비교시험을 통해 먹는 물 및 실내공기질 공정시험기준과 일원화 가능한 국제규격에 부합화된 KS규격 연구결과 먹는물수질공정시험 100개 기준 중 사전일원화 완료 23개 기준, 일원화 가능 29개 기준, 일원화 불가 12개 기준, 대응 규격 없는 기준이 36개로 평가되었으며, 실내공기질 공정시험기준 17개 기준 중 사전일원화 완료 1개 기준, 일원화 가능 3개 기준, 일원화 불가 3개 기준, 대응규격 없는 기준이 10개 기준으로 평가되었다.

Long-term Testing and Analysis of a ScSZ/LaSrCuFe Cell

  • An electrolyte supported SOFC cell was tested at $800^{\circ}C$ in air for 3600 h with an applied current density of $200\;mA/cm^2$ to examine possible cathode degradation issues. A scandium- stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) with additional manganese doping (ScSZ: Mn) was used as electrolyte. A strontium and copper-doped lanthanum ferrite (LaSrCuFe) and platinum were used as cathode and quasi-anode material, respectively. The DC resistance was logged over the complete testing period. Additionally, impedance spectroscopy was used from time to time to track changes of the cell in-situ. Post-test analysis of the cell using methods like scanning electron microscopy imaging and other electrochemical testing methods allow the identification of different degradation sources. The results indicate a promising combination of electrolyte and cathode material in terms of chemical compatibility and electrical performance.

A New Method for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing of Vitro-cultured Bacteria by Means of Resonance Light Scattering Technique

  • A new method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of vitro-cultured bacteria on an ordinary fluorescence spectrometer was developed. The viable bacteria reduced 3-(4,5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) to produce insoluble particles that displayed intense resonance scattering light. The assay showed a linear relationship between the number of viable bacteria and the intensity of resonance scattering light. Dead bacteria were unable to reduce MTT. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus exposed to flavonoids from Marchantia convoluta showed a flavonoids concentration-dependent inhibition of the ability to reduce MTT. In the assay, less than 12 h was required to attain susceptibility results and fewer bacteria were utilized than in traditional methods. The RLS technique could, in combination with the MTT assay, be a rapid and sensitive measuring method to determine the in vitro activity of new antimicrobials.
