  • A $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ (LNCAO/C) active material composite cathode was coated with carbon. The conductive carbon coating was obtained by addition of surfactant during synthesis. The addition of surfactant led to the formation of an amorphous carbon coating layer on the pristine LNCAO surface. The layer of carbon coating was clearly detected by FE-TEM analysis. In electrochemical performance, although the LNCAO/C showed similar capacity at low C-rate conditions, the rate capability was improved by the form of the carbon coating at high current discharge state. After 40 cycles of charge-discharge processes, the capacity retention of LNCAO/C was better than that of LNCAO. The carbon coating is effectively protected the surface structure of the pristine LNCAO during Li insertion-extraction.

  • Molecular aggregates of surfactant molecules consisting of one or more bilayers arranged in a hollow, closed, usually spherical geometry are termed “esicles”or “iposomes” In recent years it has been found that in certain systems the vesicular structure forms spontaneously and is long lived, and it has been suggested that these structures may in fact constitute the equilibrium state in these cases (as is true of micelles) This paper deals with the mixed CMC, vesicles, phase behavior, phase transition, geometrical structure, their formation and characterization in the aqueous solutions of mixed cationic/anionic surfactants systems. TEM micrographs revealed that the vesicles were of spherical shape and that their size was of around 180 nm. The zeta potentials are positive at CGS1-rich regions and negative at SLES-rich regions. In the region where SLES/CGS1 (6/4), the zeta potentials are very small, implying that the vesicles at this surfactant ratio may be less stable. At other surfactant ratios, the vesicles are thought to be stable, supported by large absolute values of zeta potentials and little change in UV absorbance for several months.

  • We investigated the nanotopography impact on the post-chemical mechanical polishing (post-CMP) oxide thickness deviation(OTD) of ceria slurry with a surfactant. Not only the surfactant but also the slurry abrasive size influenced the nanotopography impact. The magnitude of the post-CMP OTD increased with adding the surfactant in the case of smaller abrasives, but it did not increase in the case of larger abrasives, while the magnitudes of the nanotopography heights are all similar. We created a one-dimensional numercal simulation of the nanotopography impact by taking account of the non-Prestonian behavior of the slurry, and good agreement with experiment results was obtained.

  • In preparation of silica aerogel-based hybrid coating materials, the combination of hydrophobic aerogel with organic polar binder material is shown to be very limited due to dissimilar surface property between two materials. Accordingly, the surface modification of the aerogel would be required to obtain compatibilized hybrid coating sols with homogeneous dispersion. In this study, the surface of silica aerogel particles was modified by using both surfactant adsorption and heat treatment methods. Four types of surfactants with different molecular weights and HLB values were used to examine the effect of chain length and hydrophilicity. The surface property of the modified aerogel was evaluated in terms of visible observation for aerogel dispersion in water, water contact angle measurement, and FT-IR analysis. In surface modification using surfactants, the effects of surfactant type and content, and mixing time as process parameter on the degree of hydrophilicity for the modified aerogel. In addition, the temperature condition in modification process via heat treatment was revealed to be significant factor to prepare aerogel with highly hydrophilic property.

  • The extraction of lactic acid by an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM), in batch and continuous mode, has been reported. On the basis of preliminary experiments, the optimum composition of the organic phase (membrane) is determined. When the SPan 80 is used as surfactant, the emulsion breakage exceeds 50%, but only 10% is obtained when the ECA4360 is used. The effects of surfactant, carrier and solute concentrations, phase volume ratio, and stirring speed on the extraction yield were examined and optimized. Surfactant, carrier and diluent used were ECA4360, trilaurylamine (TLA) and dodecane, respectively; 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol (EHD) is used as a co-surfactant. Under optimal conditions, emulsion breaking is very low and the swelling is kept at its lowest level. Under the pH conditions of fermentation medium, the extraction yield is lower. A mixer-settler continuous system was used for testing these conditions. The residence time, the number of extraction stages and the stability of the emulsion were studied and optimized. The extraction yield obtained exceeds 90%.

  • The solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid in aqueous solutions of pure cationic, nonionic, amphoteric, and their mixed surfactant systems have been measured by the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The effects of hydrophobic tail-group with different chain length and the hydrophilic head-group on the solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid have been studied and also thermodynamic parameters have been calculated from the dependence of Ks values on the temperature. The results show that the values of ΔGo for the solubilization by all surfactant systems are negative and the values of ΔHo and ΔSo are all positive.

  • Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a method used to improve the recovery factor of remaining hydrocarbon in reservoir. Polymer and surfactant EOR techniques have limitations depending on reservoir or production conditions (temperature, salinity, etc.) because the polymer and surfactant are highly affected by the reservoir conditions. In this study, analysis of the current improvements to chemical substances and application technologies was performed based on recent research data. Conventional polymer is readily degraded by the conditions of high temperature and high salinity. Therefore, new polymers and injection techniques have been developed to remediate such problems. In addition, surfactant applicable to shale and carbonate reservoirs is developed as petroleum recovery expands to unconventional reservoirs. However, these chemical substances are not widely used in the current oil fields due to high costs. Therefore, further studies must be conducted to reduce the cost and thus increase the effectiveness of EOR techniques.

  • Recently, the demand for the miniaturization of package substrates has been increasing. Technical innovation has occurred to move package substrate manufacturing steps into CMP applications. Electroplated copper filled trenches on the substrate need to be planarized for multi-level wires of less than $10{\mu}m$. This paper introduces a chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process as a new package substrate manufacturing step. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of surfactant on the dishing and erosion of Cu patterns with the lines and spaces of around $10/10{\mu}m$ used for advanced package substrates. The use of a conventional Cu slurry without surfactant led to problems, including severe erosion of $0.58{\mu}m$ in Cu patterns smaller than $4/6{\mu}m$ and deep dishing of $4.2{\mu}m$ in Cu patterns larger than $14/16{\mu}m$. However, experimental results showed that the friction force during Cu CMP changed to lower value, and that dishing and erosion became smaller simultaneously as the surfactant concentration became higher. Finally, it was possible to realize more globally planarized Cu patterns with erosion ranges of $0.22{\mu}m$ to $0.35{\mu}m$ and dishing ranges of $0.37{\mu}m$ to $0.69{\mu}m$ by using 3 wt% concentration of surfactant.

  • Ultrasonic irradiation in a solution during the chemical reaction may accelerate the rate of the reaction and the crystallization at low temperature. We have synthesized nanometer sized magnetite particles using coprecipitation method, sonochemical method without surfactant, and sonochemical method with surfactant, in order to investigate the effect of ultrasonic irradiation and surfactant on the coprecipitates of metal ions. The size of the magnetite nanoparticles prepared by coprecipitation method, and sonochemical method without surfactant showed broad distributions. But we got uniform nanoparticles using a sonochemical method with oleic acid. The average size of the particles can be controlled by the ratio $R=[H_2O]/[surfactant]$. The size of the magnetite nanoparticles prepared by this method showed narrow distributions. We have characterized the nanoparticles using an X-ray diffraction (XRD), a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), and atomic force microscope (AFM). The size and distribution of the magnetite nanoparticles were measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) method.

  • A spectrophotometric method for the simultaneous determination of anionic and nonionic surfactant based on the application of multivariate calibration method such as principal component regression(PCR) and partial least squares(PLS) has been studied. The calibration models in PCR and PLS were obtained from the spectral data in the range of 400~700 nm for each standard of a calibration set of 26 standards, each containing different amounts of two surfactants. The relative standard error of prediction(RSEP$_{\alpha}$) was obtained to assess the model goodness in quantifying each analyte in a 5 validation samples which containing different amounts of two surfactants.
