  • The effects of 1,3-Butanediol, 1,2-Pentanediol, and 1,2-Hexanediol in surfactant solutions on cmc, surface tension, foaming and emulsifying properties were determined. The addition of diols in aqueous surfactant solution decreased cmc and surface tension, and enhanced the foaming and emulsifying power. This trend is more significant by the longer hydrocarbon chain length of the diols. This property was confirmed because the diol's alkyl chain and the hydrophobic interaction with the surfactant reduce the cohesive force of water and increase the interaction between the head groups of the surfactant at interface. In addition, MIC test was conducted to determine the preservative power of each diol, and as a result, the antibacterial activity was effective in the order of 1,2-HDO > 1,2-PDO > 1,3-BDO. The results of this study show that diol can be applied to cosmetics as an auxiliary surfactant and antibacterial agent.

  • The properties of electroless Ni-B thin film on diamond powder with different parameters (temperature, pH, surfactant etc.) were studied. The surface morphology, structure and composition distribution of the Ni-B film were observed by field effect scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The growth rate of Ni-B film was increased with increase of bath temperature. The B content in Ni-B film was reduced with increase of bath pH. As a result the structure of Ni-B film was changed from amorphous to crystalline structure. The PVP in solution plays multi-functional roles as a dispersant and a stabilizer. The Ni-B film deposited with adding 0.1 mM-PVP was strongly introduced an amorphous structure with higher B content (25 at.%). Also the crystallite size of Ni-B film was reduced from 12.7 nm to 5.4 nm.

  • The cleaning efficiency of papermaking felt which is contaminated with fiber fines and various micro-materials was investigated and compared between the application of enzyme and commercial detergent. It was found that the cleaning efficiency by the treatment of acidic-based detergent was more efficient than that of alkaline-based one in the conventional commercial detergent. it was also observed that the treatment design of first acidic-based detergent treatment to second alkaline-based detergent procedure was better in the cleaning efficiency, compared to alkaline based-to-acidic based one. The cleaning property of felt with enzyme was resulted in good cleaning efficiency, without any addition of surfactant. Especially, the enzyme treatment under alkaline condition (pH 10) showed a better cleaning result than that under acidic condition(pH 5). The addition of nonionic surfactant to the enzyme increased the cleaning efficiency of felt and decreased the cationic demand of wastewater. These results showed more favour than the application of conventional commercial detergent.

  • One-dimensional soil-column studies were carried out to understand the interaction of three industrial effluents namely amino acid ('highly acidic'), surfactant ('highly organic') and pharmaceutical ('organic and toxic') on the physicochemical behavior, index properties and shear strength of bentonite due to artificial contamination extending to nearly 300 days. Changes in inorganic and organic pollutants present in the effluents due to the interaction of the above effluents and soil were assessed to understand the physico-chemical behaviour. Batch and continuous modes of operation, 8 hrs and 16 hrs Hydraulic Retention Time [HRT] and 25%, 50% concentrations of effluents, were the parameters considered. Amino acid, surfactant and pharmaceutical effluents have shown a high variation in pH (7 to 8) after artificial contamination on bentonite that is their original characteristics of the above effluents have been completely reversed. Further, it is found that the shear strength of bentonite has reduced by about 20%, and with respect to liquid limit and plastic limit shows an increasing trend with time within the period of contamination.

  • In making emulsion type pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA), environmentally friendly Tween series nonionic surfactants were used to find out the possibility of substituting the traditional nonyl-phenyl nonionic surfactant (NP-40) by comparing their adhesive properties. Results exhibited that the PSA used Tween series nonionic surfactants showed much better adhesive properties in peel strength and holding power than that used NP-40.

  • Carbon master batch (CMB) rubber sheets, which are stored in stacks, are difficult to separate during reuse because of the adhesion between sheets caused by the stacked weight over time. To solve this problem, in the actual rubber product manufacturing process, various anti-tacking agents (solid powder or liquid surfactants) are applied to the sheet surface. In this study, the emulsion samples of zinc (Zn)-stearate/triethanolamine (TEA)-stearate mixtures were prepared using TEA-stearate as a surfactant, prepared using an industrially manufactured Zn-stearate powder, and their basic anti-tacking properties were studied. During the process of manufacturing emulsion, a heat treatment process and an auxiliary surfactant were introduced to improve the dispersion stability. Results showed that the heat-treated sample exhibited a significant improvement in terms of sedimentation, storage stability, and anti-tacking characteristics since the Zn-stearate particles were reduced to a smaller size by the heat-treatment than that of the original Zn-stearate powder.

  • The pulsed field gradient NMR method has been used to determine self-diffusion coefficients in ternary N-alkyl-N, N-dimethylamine oxide/hydrocarbon/$D_2O$ system. For n = 12, 14, 16 and n' = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, in the micellar phase, diffusion is chiefly governed by the hydrodynamic transport of micelles, supplemented by an exchange of solubilized hydrocarbon upon micellar collisions. This investgation is performed by variations in both the surfactant alkyl chain length and in the size of the hydrocarbon molecules. In cubic phases, the solvent still exhibits values of the diffusion coefficients which are typical for motion in a continuous water phase, with the microemulsion droplets acting as obstacle. Mobilities of the surfactant in the gel state were low and have been determined only for the surfactant($C_{12}DMAO$) with the shortest alkyl chain length. Exchange of hydrocarbon between micellar entities in the gel was found to be occured by a hopping process, the associated rate decreased with alkyl chain length of the surfactant.

  • Effect of additives such as NP series nonionic surfactant and cosurfactant on AgCl nanoparticles was investigated where nanoparticles were prepared using two different types of water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions containing silver nitrate and sodium chloride, respectively. Phase behavior experiments showed that the region of one phase W/O microemulsion was found to be broadened with an increase in the ethylene oxide length of a nonionic surfactant mainly due to an increase in hydrophilic nature of a surfactant. Photomicrographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy indicated that an increase in ethylene oxide length of a nonionic surfactant results in both increases in particle size and size distribution. Phase behavior experiments for the systems containing AOT surfactant, isooctane and aqueous solution of an inorganic salt showed that addition of a cosurfactant caused a shrinkage in phase region of one phase W/O microemulsion, especially water contents contained in W/O microemulsion with an increase in the chain length or the concentration of a cosurfactant used. Photomicrographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy indicated that characteristics of AgCl nanoparticles produced were dependent both on the radius of spontaneous curvature and film rigidity of a microemulsion.

  • Phase equilibrium and dynamic behavior studies were performed in systems containing $C_{12}E_5$ nonionic surfactant solution and nonpolar hydrocarbon oil. The phase behavior result showed an oil-in-water(O/W) microemulsion(${\mu}E$) in equilibrium with excess oil phase at low temperatures and a water-in-oil(W/O) ${\mu}E$ in equilibrium with excess water phase at high temperatures. For intermediate temperatures a 3 phase region containing excess water, excess oil, and a middle-phase microemulsion was observed and the transition temperature was found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. Dynamic behavior at low temperatures showed that an oil drop size decreased linearly with time due to solubilization into micelles and the solubilization rate decreased with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. On the other hand, both spontaneous emulsification of water into oil phase and expansion of oil drop with time were observed because of diffusion of surfactant and water into oil phase. Under conditions of a 3 phase region including a middle-phase ${\mu}E$, both rapid solubilization and emulsification of oil into aqueous surfactant solution were found mainly due to the existence of ultra-low interfacial tension. Interfacial tensions were measured as a function of time for n-decane oil drops brought into contact with 1 wt% surfactant solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Both equilibrium interfacial tension and equilibration time were found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil.
